I have trouble finding barber shops. This surprises me, because I basically want the simplest haircut ever. Long enough to comb to a part on top, tapering toward my ears and neck with high-ish sideburns. I agonized a fair bit over finding a barber in Austin after having had the same one for 6 years in Seattle, but Trisha and Austin Barber Shop have hooked me up well. I walked in on a Saturday afternoon, and Trisha was just closing up, but took me in anyway. She wasn't the most bubbly person I've ever met, but she was nice and chatted a bit (but not too much) while she gave me exactly the hair cut I wanted. The cut was only $16. Great hair cut, great prices and a nice barber. It's hard to ask for anything more. read more

First off, I just want to say that Trish is a very nice and kind lady. The whole time she was sweet and gracious. However, I am forced to give a 1 star review because of the haircut I received. I had showed Trish a photo of what I wanted, and it was a high fade from a 1 to about a 1/2. After she had finished cutting my hair, it was very noticeable in the back that there was no fade whatsoever, and the fades on the sides were clearly uneven. I asked her to fix it of course, but it was clear she was not going to give me a proper fade. Since the business is called a barbershop, I would have expected the barber to be able to give a basic fade. She used a razor to finish off the edges and even managed to cut me twice. I thought "Okay, at least it's a one $ on Yelp, so I can just get this fixed up elsewhere." She charged me $21 for a bad haircut. I immediately went to another haircut place nearby and received many shocked reactions at the state of my hair. I don't typically write reviews, but I feel that this one is necessary and justified. read more

Ok, Austin has three types of barber shops. There's the hipster-fied barber shop. There's the chains. Then, there's the real deal. Austin Barber Shop run by Trish is clearly the third one-- the real deal. After scouring Yelp for options after the retirement of my barber and the previous debacle with a chain, I decided to give Trish a try and I'm very glad I did. Trish has great hours (open until 6:30) and you can make an appointment online. Fair warning, though, that she only accepts cash and check. She's got three chairs at her shop, but she's the only one there. She said that she'd like to hire another barber, but that most stylists these days have a cosmetology license as opposed to a barber's license. The important part, my haircut. She immediately observed all that the previous barber had done to my hair and did her best to reverse the damage. She did a great job on that. She spends some time with her work and listens well. And to add to the old school barber shop feel, she does a lot of the trimming of the neck, sideburns, and around the ears with an old fashioned straight razor and hot lather. As further proof of her authentic barber credentials, she asked without prompting about trimming between your eyebrows. She's excellent about the use of towels and a hairdryer to avoid hairs going down your collar. I'm eager to see how she does with the next time when there's less damage to undo. read more

I spent a couple of months watching barber shop personnel not be masked, properly (those noses!) and Austin Barber's website makes it clear that he is intent of provided safe services. I walked in on a Friday afternoon and no one was there except Trisha. I felt a little weird, just because I'm used to Avenue Barber Shop on South Congress, which always has a long wait and all of the barbers are male, but I was in a bit of a hurry and my "don't be an asshole" side was telling me not to be sexist, so I decided to go for it. I'm so glad I did. I knew it was a good sign when I sat down and the first thing she said when looking at my head was, "So you had it tapered, last time. Did that work out for you?" It's been awhile since my last hair cut, so to be able to tell that from a quick look impressed me. She proceeded to cut while we talked about the business, her son, and my move to North Austin. I hardly realized I was getting my hair cut. Trisha was very professional and patient with her cutting. Be sure you have some time to sit while getting your hair cut. A good cut will take 20-30 minutes, but it's well worth it. When she was done, she straight razored the back of my neck with hot foam, which I was used to from Avenue, but then she pulled a hot towel out of a warmer and covered my neck and face. I wasn't expecting that, but it was awesome. Bottom line: This place offers great hair cuts and great service at a great price. It's cheaper than most places I've been and the quality is top notch. Tried because I was in the neighborhood and had heard great things. Walked out with an unfortunate boxy haircut. Not only was the cut boxy, but I asked for scissors on top and she used clippers. Goodness ... been going to Trish for so long I didn't think people had the heart to give her any less than 6 stars across the board. Trish is old school. If you want something cute and fancy, for the Love of everything Holy this is not your place. If you want a no BS, highly competent haircut, this is your gal. Trish won't cookie cut the corners, she's up front and that's refreshing. My haircuts are always consistent, she knows exactly what I want, and you only have to tell her once. She'll trim ears, eyebrows, anything she thinks looks off. I went to all the others before I found Trish. Haven't left her in 5+ years. This was my boyfriends first time here. He had been growing out his hair for a while(shoulder length), but had not had it styled and needed a trim. We went in to her telling us he doesn't need a hair cut and was not listening to what he was saying. She was very nice, but only said about 10 words to is the whole time. While my boyfriend was getting his hair cut, I sat and watched her cut way more than a trim. She proceeded to cut the top short and left the bottom long. My boyfriend walked out of there with a mullet. This style does not need to come back. She did the complete opposite of what he had asked. Now he has to get another haircut somewhere else. Trisha is a true Master Barber and not only cut it perfectly, but gave me a shave, hot towels and all. She'll even give you recommendations on the right cut or style that you need. She asks you what you want, and that's it! She once told me that she realizes that men need a quiet time sometimes... Trish did a great job on my haircut. I showed her a picture of myself taken about 6 months ago and she took her time and got it exactly right. I also wanted her to trim my beard. I have a very full, long beard and I just wanted it trimmed to match what I had 6 months ago. Trish used some clippers and a guard and completely messed up a beard I had taken a very long time to grow. It was so bad I had to use my own clippers at home to fix it by cutting it even shorter.
