The bao bun stole the show though. Soft bun, flavorful filling, fresh crunch from the slaw and cucumber. Add in a genuinely charming garden patio (they grow their own herbs and veggies right outside) and a cozy dining room, and this is an easy recommend for date night, a family dinner, or just treating yourself after work. She also let us know that they used tons of fresh herbs from the garden on their patio out front and she let us try some cantaloupe leaves from some microgreens they were growing on one of the tables by the window! We loved the charming ambiance of the interior, which felt cozy and modern. The cocktails were refreshing and strong. The food was everything I was hoping for and more! The flavors were exquisite and I found myself wanting to try everything on the menu if we could. This is such a gem of a restaurant, please give it a try if you haven't already. Describing this restaurant as amazing small business simply doesn't do justice. You have to utilize them and see it for yourself. Opened its door about a year or so ago. I noticed this place (I would say) about 6 months ago when I was at the liquor store (in the same shopping center) working my side hustle (sampling some products as a representative from the distributor.) I simply didn't have time that day so I had no choice but to reserve the opportunity to visit them for another time. I cannot believe that I simply let another 6 months pass by before I was finally able to utilize them today (Dec 7, 2025). On a sunny Sunday afternoon, it was way past the peak lunch time. The restaurant didn't have anybody dining when I stepped in. As I was furiously taking photos of its exterior from the overview of the front of restaurant to small Sunday special signage, I simply couldn't stop taking more photos of it once I was inside; it's quite cozy and cute! And it's all about Peru and alpacas!! I, of course, was warmly welcomed by a few workers at the ordering counter. The lady in charge was peppy and gregarious. She explained about the restaurant a bit. She then handed me several different menus from breakfast menu to drink menu to main (food) menu so I would know what the restaurant offers. The size of the restaurant is smaller but what they offer and serve is mighty! I told her I would need at least 5 minutes to peruse all the menus. I had time; there was no need for me to rush the process. At a place like this (South American cuisine), ordering an empanada or a few is a must. I've had empanadas from several different South American countries such as El Salvador to Columbia to Argentina to Nicaragua. It was my first time to experience ones from Peru. Yes, I simply could not resist the urge. My final decision was as follows: T. Aji De Gallina (Peruvian spicy creamed chicken stew) and one of the empanadas (I ended up getting a ground beef one even though I asked for a vegetarian one. This was okay as it was a simply mistake.) Aji de gallina: As I described above, this is a stew with chicken, rice and potatoes. This curry like stew is made with milk, peanuts and pecans. Simply state, exquisitely made with a subtle taste of peanuts. The chicken and potatoes were well-smothered in the creamy stew with a slight kick of spiciness. And when you eat it with jasmine rice like rice lightly seasoned with salt, a magic is created in your mouth to feel the warmth and savoriness. Simply and delightfully well-made dish to say the least. Ground beef empanada: Again, I ordered the spinach and cheese empanada but ended up getting the ground beef one. It was an honest mistake where it really didn't upset me. The excellent service by the lady upfront and the main dish's exquisiteness pretty much nullified the mistaken for me. And I found the ground beef empanada wonderful (the accompanying chimichurri sauce enhanced the whole experience.) Well, this also created a desire in me to go back there again soon and try other empanadas including the one I couldn't eat (spinach and cheese). This place is only a 15-minute drive from my southeast Denver house. For a quick drive that short, I can go here just about any time during my lunch break or after work. At my next visit, I will definitely try S. Seco A La Nortena (cilantro beef stew). And one of the empanadas for sure! I simply cannot wait for that opportunity.

Bonjou tout moun! I'm here today to tell you about Aurora's newest hotspot for Haitian (etc.)…read morecooking - namely, Mama Josie Café Creole in the old Tonti's space at Chambers/Quincy. Let's explore the tasty baked goods, main courses, and more that can be found here. One thing I want to make very clear from the beginning (since I've seen some confusion on this subject) is that the "Creole" in the business name specifically refers to the variety from Haiti, not the one from Louisiana. So no, you won't find étouffée or gumbo or dirty rice here - but at the same time, I don't think you'll miss them when you see what else is on offer. Start things off with a cooling beverage - options on your visit may include Grenadia (passionfruit), Melon (in this case referring to watermelon), or my personal favorite, Choublak (hibiscus) - while you check out the substantially stocked pastry case. Mmmmm, don't those Pates look delicious? Whether your tastes lean more towards Mori (codfish), Epina (spinach), or even Aran So (herring), I think you'll find that these stuffed puff pastry delights will serve as a most suitable starting point for your culinary investigations. And on that note, let's look a little further at Mama Josie's menu offerings, and see what awaits us in terms of potential main dishes. On my recent visit, I readily admit it took me a while to make a decision from amongst the proprietress's captivating combination plates. But I finally settled on Poule Nan Sòs. Literally "chicken in sauce", this dish of poultry pieces slow-cooked with plenty of thyme, Scotch bonnet peppers, and mixed citrus is a cornerstone of the Haitian kitchen, and was especially memorable when paired with rice and peas (Diri Kole) and stewed corn (Mayi). (By the way, the more familiar Jamaican-style jerk chicken is also offered here). But chicken is certainly not the only main-course possibility to consider at Mama Josie. When the weather gets a bit cooler (any day now, the way things are going), you may get a chance to try a hearty bowl of pumpkin soup (or rather, Soup Joumou). Or, see what you think of some long-braised oxtails, or even a Sunday special of Dinde (turkey) with some macaroni and cheese on the side. Yes, no matter what you pick, it's safe to say that Mama Josie's plentiful platters will make you "trè kontan".

The staff is friendly and helpful and the menu has a good variety of Cuban foods. We ordered at the counter, found a table, changed tables due to too much air conditioning near the back, and settled in. The menu has salads, appetizers, plates, wraps, desserts and a bar. Our food was brought out to the table and was steaming hot. My sandwich was actually a little greasy on the outside so I had to blot it. But it was delicious and very authentic. I had the black beans and yucca fries as my side and they were also very good. One of my friends had the chicken sandwich and said it was very good but the bread could have been toastier. We also shared a basket of completely addictive fries with garlic mojo. Those also left some puddles of grease on the bottom of the basket. I think that, because they were so busy, they just weren't draining the fried foods before serving them. Anyway, I would like to go back to try more of these authentic items - and leave room for Cuban coffee and dessert.
