First time ever trying Aurelio's tonight. Our family was a party of five and we were seated immediately, around 6:30pm on a Saturday night. There was our table, two booths of patrons and one other table of 5 to 6 people, about a half full dining room. We put in an appetizer order and an order for three pizzas around 6:45p Apps and drink refills came out quickly with the exception of our bread sticks, we were told they burned the first batch and they needed to be remade. Eventually those came out and we were eating by 7/7:10. By 7:45, we were still waiting on pizza and the waitress came out to tell us that the kitchen ran out of pizzas and is making more, and that she moved our ticket up in line so there are only four orders before ours. Running out of pizzas and being backed up on orders wasn't just discovered at 7:45, but that's how long they waited to tell us that they hadn't started our pizzas and they wouldn't be able to for four more large on-line orders were ahead of us. We took our check for the apps and left extremely disappointed. I'd heard nothing but good things about this place and the food, but I don't appreciate the lack of communication, not sure I'm ever going to bother going there again. read more

My fiancée and I ordered a small pizza which is meant to serve two people I asked for some Parmesan and red peppers and the lady at the front Jill gave us one small packet of each and said that I would have to pay extra for more... I called when I got home to speak with a manager and she said that she was the manager and I refused to talk to her because in my opinion she did not try to rectify the situation when we were in person especially for something as small as condiments... Small seating area, not super fancy, but decent pizza parlor-ish atmosphere. And the pizza was actually really good! I loved love LOVED their sauce! We all ordered thin crust - 3 pizzas total, which was nothing super special, but did its job (i.e. - holding the toppings together, lol). If you have any sense at all, don't bother ordering the wine, it's all Barefoot brand (read-cheap), but it WILL give you a buzz if you try hard enough. You might as well get beer. It'll probably taste better! Not super great service (for us, anyhow, this time...maybe YOU'LL have better luck?). It's been many years since I've been to an Aurelio's Pizza and this is actually the first time I've been to the Portage,IN location. I used to go to the Mokena,IL location mainly for the all you can eat lunch buffet during my lunch break at work. It's pretty much about what I remember. The pizza is nothing that is going to blow you away, but it is respectable. I had a medium half pepperoni half anchovies (yes I am one of the few people that loves anchovies!) and it was pretty good. I also had their chicken parmesan dinner and a order of their soft bread sticks. The bread sticks were tasty, but the chicken parmesan dinner, not so much. Pretty plain and bland tasting to be honest. For region pizza I would rank Aurelio's way above Gelsosomos, but not even close to JJ'S or Edwardo's quality of pizza. read more

I love how friendly the staff is but something is off with the pizza. I can't pinpoint whether it's the sauce, cheese or sausage but it's so salty that it's inedible. I usually steer clear of their sausage pizza for this reason but gave it another try since the kids requested that pizza. Needless to say I'm never going back there again. My family and I get the same thing every time. A thin crust pizza with sausage. Some of the best pizza money can buy in this area. I know some people people are turned off by the price because they are pricey, but I promise it's worth it. The sausage is super flavorful. The cheese taste fresh. Ordered from here twice in the last few weeks. First time I ordered a deep pizza with white sauce. I've never, in my entire life, had something be so disgustingly salty. So the $30 order was thrown away. Thought I would give it another chance and ordered last night. Thin crust with red sauce. The exact same issue. So overwhelmingly filled with salt, we threw away the pizza after one bite. I assumed there would be no point in complaining to them as they probably would blame on our taste buds. This is the second time they have been located in Portage. The original place is now Gelsosomo's and makes a great pie. We get this when we don't want to wait as long for our pizza. The pizza is good and I think the prices are reasonable. Good usually costs more. It isn't Pappa John's or Pizza Hut, so you are going to pay more and you're going to get a better pizza. We just ordered for pick up and they said 20 minutes. Always friendly staff, always quick if you're picking an order up. Only gets 4 stars because it isn't Gelsosomo's, but it's close. read more

Very decent Gelsosomo's style pizza. For about the same price, you can get just about the same pizza and extras as the local Gelsosomo's restaurant. (This isn't a bad thing, they bought the sauce off of the owners years back, it's really good stuff). The inside isn't anything incredible, very basic, nothing pretty, just a pickup counter really last time I checked, they cook the pizzas and you pick them up. If you like Gelsosomo's or pizza in general and have some extra money to spend, check it out. read more

Love the pizza!!! This place is always my "go to" pizza place. The staff is always friendly and the food is consistently good.

It seriously bummed me out to see this place only had 2.5 stars. Some of the best pizza in the Chicagoland area for sure. And while the Portage location (or any of them, for that matter) will never be quite on par with the original Homewood restaurant, their pizza is consistently delicious and they use quality ingredients. It's not cheap, but there's a lot of truth to getting what you pay for. If you want a Papa John's-priced pizza, then go get a greasy, generic pizza. But if you want something above average and are cool paying for that, you can't beat Aurelio's. Plus, if you're a returning customer, there are coupons/perks, etc. I can't speak for the dine-in service, but we've never had an issue with carry-out. If you're calling in around dinner time, there's going to be a wait (umm... duh), so plan accordingly. read more

I asked for garlic bread on the bread we were already getting with the dinner I was told (by the manager) that if I wanted butter & garlic on that bread, it would cost an additional $7 If money is no object to you, enjoy your dinner, I, however find that criminal to charge that amount for probably $.50 (obviously a high estimate) for butter & garlic. $33 for pasta is already an extremly, find some where else. I am a huge fan of Chicago pizza, and love Aurelio's. Steer clear of the Portage Aurelio's. This location carries the attitude that they're the only game in town, and pricey. We've paid their price time and time again and expect a better product than the garbage national chain restaurants. Multiple incidents with this location with laid-off visits for long periods - coming back later hoping for change with few alternatives. We've experience patronizing customer service on the phone, poor product packaging on sandwiches & appetizers placed in a thin paper tray, soggy crust on pizza and calzones / calabrese. On one instance, an Italian beef / sausage combo was ordered. The kitchen is in plain view from the counter. I watched the cook retrieve a raw sausage from the freezer and place it directly in the microwave...cancelled order and walked out. Apparently, instructions specific to carry-out orders - repeated twice by the person taking the order - are ignored. The FOLLOWING DAY after a carry-out order was botched by this location, we were driving past the Portage Aurelio's, so we stopped in to inform the manager of their shortcomings. When reparations are requested, Portage Aurelio's protocol requires the product be brought back. I "CARRIED-OUT"...remember? We have busy lives, and the family was hungry. Yet, we are expected to get back in the car after unwrapping the food, make a second trip to the Portage Aurelio's, wait for new product, and head back home. Instead we settled for the sub-par product. Partial credit was offered on future orders. Are you kidding? How about my fuel and time? The love affair is over...there will be no future orders. This is a great pizza! Aurelio's came way before Gelsosomo's. Gelsosomos' was origianally started by a member of the same family. Aurelio's has been in business for 50 plus years I believe. I wish they had a sit down restaurant like they do in Lake County and the original ones in Illinois. These restaurants have buffett's where you can taste all sorts of their pizza's and other offerings. They have never made me anything but fresh dough and a fresh pizza. I have no Idea where the gentleman who reviewed in 2008 was getting a pizza from but it wasn't from Aurelio's. Very consistant in flavor and taste. Always cooked to perfection. The pizza is amazing and always will be, its far better than any other pizza in town, and its not a 5.00 little cesaer pizzza, so be prepared to spend 20 bucks to eat but you know what its worth it! I know personally everything is fresh on a daily basis from the dough to the cheese which is ground in the store! Nothing on the menu is frozen before use except for maybe the frech fries. I grew up very close to the original Homewood Aurelio's Pizza and this place is just as good as the original. They are always very pleasant on the phone and my pizza always comes hot and right on time. I feel sorry for anyone who's too cheap to spend the dough for this pizza as it is one of Chicago's original pizza places at its finest. Most the food out here is pretty gross and tasteless especially the Chinese food so I was very happy to find a real pizza place in this area. My only beef is they don't have any place to sit down and have a nice family meal. Would be awesome if they had seating and servers. read more

Worst service ever! After we placed our drink order/appetizers waitress brought us our drinks. Then she took my food order. After that, she never came back to my table (cook brought out my pizza) which I asked her where was my appetizer I ordered). Cook brought that out. Never did anyone ask if we wanted our drinks refilled. After we were done eating we sat there for another 20 minutes and finally asked for a box and the bill which took them another 15 minutes to bring to me.
