I never wanted to leave a restaurant so badly in my life! The most stressful experience I've ever had at a restaurant. The food was very good. I ordered the Mix and Match for $12.95. I ordered fried chicken and turkey wings, Mac and cheese, and potato salad. I got two rather small chicken legs (I thought I'd get a leg and a thigh) but that was ok. Now let me start with my complaints. I understand that they just changed the menu (what I ordered was only $9.95 before today--bad timing on my part) and I understand the system has to be tweaked some but it was so chaotic. The lady scooping up the food kept yelling at the cash register. The cashier had the patience of Job, she tried to stay civil and handle the customers but her annoyance and stress level were apparent. There was even a point when she said, "Ok. So @ 1st glance the restaurant is clean and pleasant. Prompted by the recent TV spot that aired on PHL 17 for National Fried Chicken Day and the fact that the MR loves a good batch of fried chicken we headed there for our Sunday after church meal (in other words, we were SUPER hungry!). We ordered the award winning fried chicken, fried fish (whiting), salmon cake and because it was the first time we sampled the following sides - yams, okra w corn and tomatoes, mac tuna salad, mac n cheese, collard greens, and potato salad. After much encouraging from the server we added 2 rib bones as well. Initially we wondered why the place wasn't packed with customers because everyone LOVES a good SOUL FOOD Sunday meal...Right? Right! With the first taste we discovered why... the yams tasted canned although the server assured us they were not, the okra w corn and tomatoes was canned / frozen and not seasoned with anything but sweetener, the chicken was dry, ribs were a little tough, greens were bland, and the salmon cake....lets just say I left it completely on the plate after one bite. We thoroughly enjoyed the Whiting, and the cold salads and the sweet tea. Not sure if we will be back but if so, we know what to order. I heard a few whispers about this place from time to time. I usually received my soul food fix from Denise Soul Food a.k.a the Pink Trunk located outside of 30th Street Station. I have passed this place a few times on route dirty, I mean route 30 whenever the drivers of south jersey couldn't get their act together on 295. One day upon passing this place I said I was going to grab my wife and drive back here for dinner. I already knew I wanted the Turkey wings after reading the Yelp reviews prior to driving back to Aunt Berta's Kitchen. I decided to get the pick 2 combo so I had a few ribs as well. Satisfied!! The wife had the turkey wings and friend chicken. Unlike me she likes dark meat (drumroll) but prefers a nice wing or breast. She may have not gotten the piece she wanted, but expressed her satisfaction for the taste As for the sides, the mac and cheese was ok, the candied yams were good and the greens brought me back to my great aunts house. I have to say I was disappointed with the cornbread. I have had better cornbread pre-cooked and sold at shopping stores. Minus that one little hick-up and you got yourself a real decent meal. Pleasant people mostly . Energy from workers was low today though. Everything looks really good and the items I've had are good also ... especially the Mac and cheese. I usually come in just for that. They normally have everything on the menu available and quickly prepared. I just ordered a little before 2 pm on Sunday and there was no special iced tea available along with some other missing items and apparently there weren't going to be any more. There's a lot of business hours left of the day so I'm not really understanding the logic. Would've been nice to make me more content than that. That's ridiculous. Food and service are great. The man working was very polite and made sure everyone was taken care of. The one red flag is that as of May 11, 2022, they have a very regressive mask policy. I just wanted to pick up my food, which was no more than 10 feet away from me but was asked to leave if I have no mask. I didn't have to pay or anything, just grab the bag and go. Due to this, I put my shirt over my face (the equivalent of a cloth mask, which they accept) but was still sent away. Had to run a block to and back from my car just to grab a darn mask. I thought our society was above this, but some places are still operating in the past. Other than this issue, the workers are polite and food is good. The policy is the only issue, as it will catch anyone who doesn't carry a mask around 24/7 at this point in time. I hope whoever's running this fine operation will rethink this. read more

On an outing to Berlin Farmers Market, we found a little restaurant off to the side with food that filled the air with the most wonderful smells of a southern mother's kitchen. So, we decided to stop and check it out. The little order area, and kitchen were in view of the seats that were there for customers to wait for their orders to go, or dine there. The woman at the front was nice and very helpful, not to mention patient because we had a hard time narrowing down our choices. Finally, we ordered the 2 entree, 2 sides meal with a tea. The ribs, jerk turkey wings, fried chicken, cabbage, Mac and cheese, not to mention the collard greens were absolutely delicious, oh, and did I mention the fried fish. Whooa! . We instantly knew that this place was well worth the drive for our next trip to Berlin. None of the food is too spicy or overly seasoned, just flavored enough for you to taste the true flavor of whatever you're eating. This is home cooking that you will enjoy and not break the bank on. We also found out that there's one in Oaklyn Nj as well. So of course we went there too. The same delicious food, right there tempting you to overeat. The young man at the front, and the young lady working there were just as friendly as at the other location. He also let us know that the Oaklyn rest was there first, and has been there for years, and that the Berlin location is new, as of maybe 2 yrs. We are crazy over the food at both locations. Both have great customer service people, excellent food that you get served more than enough of, and the prices can't be beat. Something has happened to my favorite soul food spot. Granted, it has been some time since I was in so I stopped in on my way home from work. Things have slipped. The food all looked and tasted "old" like it was prepared WAY,WAY ahead of time. I had the ribs and fried chicken. Two small dry ribs and what seemed to be leftover chicken. Mac and Cheese was just ok but was not fresh, The greens were pretty good. The corn was straight from the can with no seasoning or flavor. All of the food on display just did not look fresh. In what will be more than likely my first and only visit, this is gonna be a two star review. One for the service given to me, the other for the food made for me.. This was supposed to be a quick stop in to order food for my family. The food on the menu is hot and in a case with warmers. Plenty of people coming and going, so what's in the case was being fill with hot, fresh cooked food. I ordered a chicken meal for my family that came with two large sides and cornbread. I didn't care for the appearance of the chicken, which had a few feathers on it. As far as I know, it could have been a problem from the supplier. What I do know, is that the little throat ticklers fried on the chicken would have caused me major problems at home...lol. I don't have a good track record of picking new places to try. The man that took my order was really good about making me a fresh order of chicken. The chicken was ok, the sides were good, and the cornbread was a little hard. I can look past just ok food and return to any business for another visit. But watching a family wait in the dining room without being acknowledged the whole time that I was waiting for my chicken to be cooked was enough for me to decide to take my meal and enjoy it for what its worth... We ordered two mix and match plates: One with salisbury steak (which tastes like a fantastic meatloaf), pork chops (a little dry, but good with the gravy), mashed potatoes with gravy (awesome!), and collard greens (THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD). The food was great (take out). Never knew this was so close by. As others have mentioned the turkey wings are terrific. I had never had turkey wings before. The meat fell off the bones, the spicey sauce that they were covered in was very tasty. I had the candied yams and cabbage as sides. The cabbage was delicious, the yams were too sweet for my taste but also very good. I was not a big fan of the cornbread, the taste was good, but they were pretty dry. After reading others' reviews, I wish I tried the collard greens. I have ordered a number of bad collards in the area, so I didn't want to press my luck. I will definately be ordering them next time. The service was lacking when I ordered. When I called to order, I was hung up on once (The young sounding woman said hello, and then imediately disconnected... maybe it was a dropped call), and when I called back she seemed like I was bothering her. When I showed up, she (I imagine it was the same person) made no indication that she saw I was stanging there, and again seemed like I was bothering her by letting her know I was there to pick up my food. Searching for Mac and Cheese that taste similar to my moms, I found this soul food spot in South Jersey. I have to say the drive was well worth it! The Mac and cheese is the best so far out of the soul food spots I have tasted. The Mac and cheese taste similar to Kelsey's in Atlantic City, NJ. The collard greens were well seasoned nice and tender as well. The fish was on point and also well seasoned. My husband had double mash and gravy and pigs feet and he enjoyed his food as well. I am definitely going back because I would like to try the turkey wings and was upset I didn't get it the first visit. The food is also out in front when you go inside and can be seen, which is something I like. They have a dinning area but the front where you place your order is a little small, and when I went to pick up food it was packed. I ordered to go. My only thing keeping this from 5 stars is that I thought the lady who rung me up could have been a little nicer it seemed she as angry at something. Came here with expectations for the best fried chicken ever and did not leave disappointed. The chicken was super moist, well seasoned, and had the most perfectly fried skin. We also tried the turkey wings, which everyone on Yelp raves about. The meat was so tender it fell right off the bone! Everyone at my table also loved the mac n cheese. The only reason I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 was because of the slow service. There were only 6 tables in the dining room and almost everyone had complaints about the service. We sat for about 30 mins before someone finally took our order. Luckily, as soon as Aunt Berta showed up, everything ran more smoothly. I wish my fried fish would have been crispy when I arrived home, but the condensation caused my fish to get soggy. Also ordered the coconut cake and the lemon cake. Both slices were hard as rocks, which didn't make sense to me. In addition, the frosting on the lemon cake had a strange taste. Finally, I won't revisit the Berlin location. EDIT: Some time has passed and I have gone back several times. It appears that the problem has been fixed and everything is great again. Ok, first, I love the food...the Fish is my favorite and I try to get some every few weeks as a treat. Tonight I called to place an order for fish so I wouldn't have to wait while they cook it. My first call I was place on hold...waiting, waiting...waiting..... I waited for 5 minutes and hung up. I waited 10 minutes and called back, I was asked what I wanted, placed my order and was then told that they don't take phone orders tonight. I live a block away and went right over. There was one customer waiting for food and one table eating in the dining room. I placed my order again and asked why they don't do phone orders, the cashier said that I'd have to talk to the manager. I was expecting Berta to come out, but the gentleman that came to answer my question said that they were too busy to take phone orders. He asked "That was about an hour ago right?" I replied that it was less than two minutes ago and he reiterated that they were very busy and couldn't take phone orders. I waited while they cooked my fish and took it home, it was very good as always. But really, no phone orders? I bet Berta would be furious. read more
