Came here for our first beer and pretzel in Germany. The beer was nice, but the pretzel was hard and I was hoping it would be soft. We also shared a Weinerschnitzel, which was pretty good. The staff sat us very quickly at a table upstairs with one of the best views of the restaurant. Our server was really friendly and took pictures of us and took us to the underground cellar room so we could see what that was like. This room was charming. We say in the beer garden, so there was no service to speak of. We got the char-grilled fish and a pretzel. The fish was good...the pretzel was maybe the best I've ever had. Hard on the outside, soft and pillowy on the inside. The obvious problem is that you don't feel welcomed... it's like the Hofbrauhaus.The waiters have this F U attitude that you need them and you'll wait for your mediocre meal. One of the most famous bier halls/restaurants in all of Munich. Literally serves thousands and thousands of people a month and our reserved dining experience was 100% a failure. Our waiter was attentive at first and then after we ordered our entries we just sat, we watched everyone that arrived after us get their meals... nothing. We tried to get his attention but that was nearly impossible. After 45 minutes of nothing I asked, what turned out to me the manager, for some assistance. He asked our waiter what was going on. Not sure what they said to each other as I don't speak German well. He took our orders, two of the same meal and two different meals. The four meal arrived fairly quickly. He admitted he forgot to out the order in. When the food arrived two of the four meals was incorrect. Has we not had that waiter our experience would have been outstanding, the food and beers were very good. The atmosphere is amazing and a very cool experience. Maybe next time but given it's Munich and they have several famous bier halls there probably won't be a next time. read more

Wow! I think this is a fitting way to start out on this review. This place is overwhelming. Not in a bad way, but in a way that you just have to go in prepared. With seating for over 5000 people you can become overwhelmed with the sheer magnitude of tables, people, and noise. And we were lucky enough to hit it right at the peak! ( yikes) We first stopped by the host desk. He asked if we had a reservation, which we did not. So he said we could find a table outside. We walked around for a good 10 minutes, looking for a place to sit with a party of four and mistakenly sat in a drinking zone that was self service. We wanted to get drinks and dinner. So really at this point we were giving up and going to find something else, when we just happened upon an open table on our way out in the food zone. So we nabbed it. The wait staff here is absolutely amazing. The amount of beers that they can carry in one hand is superhuman. They are also covering a large territory of tables and do it extremely well. We ordered drinks and food at the same time. The drinks came out all together, but when our food came, one of the meals was on a delay for some reason, and arrived about 10 minutes after our food was there. But we were having fun drinking and chatting with neighboring tables. Everybody was there just to have a good time. So I guess to summarize, just be prepared for the sheer magnitude of this beer garden. And once you have that frame of mind, your maneuver through it the best you can. read more

Mixed grill with duck, schweinebraten, schweinehaxe, and a Nurnberg bratwurst served with dunked bier brown gravy and a potato dumpling. I'm going to be honest with you, I don't know how much of this review will be accurate because I came here after a few hours at the Octoberfest tents. I had quite the buzz and I wanted to keep it going by checking out one of the older establishments in Munich. So in my mildly inebriated state, I was able to enjoy another pint here, some pig knuckle, some schnitzel and blintzes (dessert). The food itself was, forgettable other than the dessert. I remember vaguely really enjoying the dessert. I also of course enjoyed the beer. I did walk around the place and it is quite impressive. Lots of room to host lots of people. The journey to find the restrooms was fun because you had to traverse down some stairs into what I thought felt was suppose to be a place that would be a cellar of some sort. So I really wanted to check this place out because of its history and it did not disappoint in that aspect. I really wish I could give you a more detailed account of my experience here but in all honesty it was a bit of a blur, but I was able to safely survive it with a smile on my face when I left so cheers to that. If you come here, try to get a table in the Keller (cellar) portion! The ambiance is amazing and just what you would expect from a classic Bavarian brewery. In terms of vegetarian options...there's the Kazespatzle, some salads, and I think one other dish so not too many options :( The Kazespatzle comes with a side salad that wasn't too impressive. My personal favorite dinner during my Germany travels. The servers were nice here and we were seated right away at the restaurant area. Beer options include a house beer, Weiss, plenty of non alcoholic drinks as well. There's a large beer garden area as well with cafeteria style food and drinks section. At the restaurant we ordered a cordon bleu dinner, which came with a large portion of pork cordon bleu, fries, half a peach, cranberry, lettuce garnish. I had the pumpkin soup and salad. Everything was excellent. The cordon bleu was very cheesy, tender, and the fries were crisp and lightly salted. The dressing for the salad was delicious and came with fresh butter lettuce, potato salad, tomato wedges. The pumpkin soup was very tasty as well and had a nice curry drizzle on top that added a tasty layer of spices. I would highly recommend coming here for dinner. We took a 20 min train ride to get here and it was well worth it. read more

The massive Augustiner Beer Garden is super popular among locals and features a huge complex full of people enjoying drinks under the shade of trees. The food here was standard beer garden fare, and we had the Schweinshaxe (crispy pork knuckle) served with a chewy potato dumplings and beer sauce; 6 little Nürnberger sausages with sauerkraut; a Greek salad (cucumbers, peppers, olives, and feta cheese); and a huge salted pretzel. The quality of the food was rather average--the pork knuckle was fatty and slightly tough, and many of the other items were overly salty. But I was a big fan of the Steckerlfisch stand, which offered whole mackerels grilled on a stick and sold by weight. The freshly-grilled fish had a nice salty exterior and meaty texture and was delicious all on its own. And while the food here may not have been a highlight, the lively atmosphere created by the beer-drinking locals certainly was! read more

My favorite Bräuhaus in Germany, been here a few times, always solid, addicting. The Lager Keller had private events going on, since it was Christmas time, but the bar area was fun, great conversation with people from all over the world. The beer, food and service is always great....they had some form of curling out in the beer garden with wooden huts to gather, if you have a group. Augustine Keller is one of the oldest and largest beer gardens in Munich. It has seating for 5,000 people. It is definitely an impressive and pretty restaurant. I understand German service might not be as attentive as American service, but the servers were quite distant and aloof. They serve traditional Bavarian food. I ordered roasted pork in dark beer gravy, with a potato dumpling, and cabbage salad. Although, the food was tasty, it was not my favorite meal. I did, however, love their beer offerings. The restaurant is beautiful, fun, and its a landmark. It seems to be a place where there are a lot of tourists. I know many locals recommended us this beer garden. 4 stars. read more

Great place to come and enjoy a beer and some snacks when visiting Munich. It's pretty much an outdoor park with a large amount out picnic tables and regular tables to sit out. There was a reserved seating and unreserved seating section with a small building for indoor seating. You can order from a server or if you're in the unreserved section you walk up to the pavilion to order your food. They have a food & beer line or a beer only line so things move pretty quick. The area has quite a few trees so it's nice to sit down and enjoy the day. 100% would suggest coming back. Follow Arnulfstrasse About a quarter mile west of the train station and you'll come to a fairly non-descript archway entrance to Augustiner Keller beer garden. Inside is almost a whole city block under chestnut trees packed with tables of people enjoying brews. Our group of 6 was looking a little confused about how to get a table when a waiter took us under his wing. The liter mugs of beer were great, and the gals enjoyed "ratler", a mix of lemonade and beer. Our hesitancy about German food vanished when the plates arrived. The owner and his wife dropped by the table and shared some of the history and traditions of the place. Our table was "owned" by a group of railway track workers that convene every Wednesday. Every other day of the week, it was available for all. There were many tables like that, all owned by local groups. When we mentioned that we were heading on to Passau, he recommended a restaurant there, which was also a good find. This was a great ending to our first day in Munich. It was a no-brainer to return again the next evening. We did not explore the indoor venues, which may be necessary on rainy days. read more

***4.5 stars rounded up*** Originally, I was going to give this place 4 stars, but it actually ended up being my favorite beer hall that we visited on our recent trip to Munich. The reason for only 4 stars was their Kasespatzle, which was by far the saltiest I tried during my stay in Germany. It was too salty to eat actually, leading me to believe that I just got unlucky with a bad batch. Food aside, the ambiance here was unrivaled in comparison to all other beer halls that we went to. We visited all of the major ones and had the most fun at this location. Upon arrival, ask for directions to their downstairs basement. This place is huge, with a variety of options to sit and explore, but I believe their basement is probably the liveliest area to drink at. We enjoyed a mass of beer and pretzels here while taking in the atmosphere. The basement kind of feels like a cave, and the spiral staircase down is seemingly endless. You wouldn't want to be down here when an earthquake hits, that's for sure. That being said, the fun and lively ambiance, decor, and drinking shenanigans awaiting your arrival are top notch. This was a super fun experience, and a spot I would definitely go to again next time I'm in Munich. read more

In our experience, the garden was overwhelming the staff was no help, and they showed no interest in being helpful. For example, there is a self service and regular service section, but the distinction was not clear. We tried to ask where to sit, but the staff literally wouldn't turn their head to look at us to respond. We approached 3 different people. This beer garden is nestled in the middle of the city, but feels like you're in the forest. The place is enormous. There is literally a large section with a great playground surrounded by picnic tables and tall trees. Most of the tables in the restaurant are serviced by a wait staff, but if you sit on the picnic tables you have to go to the designated self-serve area to get your food and drinks... it took us a while to figure this out. I must admit their beer was good. Smallest size is 1 liter and I ended up ordering second. I am not a much of beer drinker but I had two, that's how good it was. Go. Just go. Mutliple times, if your schedule and the weather allows. Beer Gardens are hands-down my favorite part of Germany, and Augustiner might just be the crown jewel of beer gardens in Munich. Truth be told, the other beer gardens I've visited in Munich have all been lovely too (looking at you, Lionbrau) but Augustiner was the first beer I'd tried in Germany (in part because it's a favorite of my companion) and it will always have sentimental value. Not to mention, Augustiner is over 200 years old, so it's a part of history. My first few visits to Munich were off-season and the Augustiner garden was closed, so I was so thrilled to finally get to hang out here. Anyway, the beer is plentiful and plenty good, and you can get roasted fish and ginormous pretzels and other traditional German dishes, and hangout for however long you'd like while enjoying. You can easily spend hours here, just drinking in the sunshine and having a nice time with your buddies, and you definitely should. Don't pack your schedule so full of activities that you don't have time to chill out in the beer garden-- or else cancel a few things on your to-do-list and order yourself another massive stein. read more
