I can't say enough good things about Dave Lalin and Audio Intellect. I first came upon his company when I was in the market for new speakers and did a search for dealers of KEF LS50 Meta speakers. I was encouraged by the many positive reviews I read, and a huge bonus for me: Audio Intellect is right in my neighborhood. Upon my initial phone call, Dave spent a lot of time listening to what I was looking for, what I already had, why I was interested in KEF LS50 Meta speakers, etc. Based on our conversation, he recommended different speakers he thought would provide the listening experience I was looking for and we set up an appointment for me to visit his home studio. The willingness to spend time with me continued when I went to audition speakers; we listened for hours. Once I decided upon the speakers I thought I wanted, Dave and his son came to my house to set them up so I could demo them with my own equipment, in my own space. Through no fault of Dave's, there was an incompatibility issue between the speakers and my pre-amp. This took a couple weeks to diagnose, and throughout the investigating, trial and error, and emails to the designer of the speakers, Dave was responsive and helpful in determining the problem (again, nothing to do with the equipment I was purchasing from him). In fact, he immediately loaned me an amp and pre-amp so I could listen to music while we were figuring out what the issue was with my equipment. Fast forward a few weeks: I decided to sell my amp and pre-amp and purchase an integrated tube amp instead. Having had such a positive experience with Dave, I bought my Synthesis Roma 753 ac amp through him as well. I can't say enough good things about Audio Doctor. Dave's MO is to work out of his home, by appointment only. This turns out to be very good. When you're there, you have his complete attention - he isn't bouncing from customer to customer. Second, he has 4 audition rooms, depending on what kind of gear you're shopping for. The environment is very comfortable, so you can focus on listening. AD stocks quite a wide variety of brands - the amount of gear available to hear is amazing. And Dave's very knowledgeable about all of it - you never get the feeling he's winging it. He's also a very nice guy. A couple more comments. I've been to many NYC dealers. Some of them are great. But some of them you get the feeling they're weighing your wallet the second you walk in the door. This isn't like that. Dave is looking for long-terms customers, and so there's no arm-twisting: he knows if you leave happy you'll come back. He also beats many NYC dealers just for # of lines carried. I purchased a pair of speakers from the Audio Doctor close to 10 years ago. The purchase was seemless and Dave was very easy to buy from over the phone. The speakers are great and I still use them frequently on my analogue rig. I finally had a chance to visit his brick and mortar shop last time I was in NYC and had a great experience as well. He has a great selection and really takes the time to find out your listening tastes and preferences. Dave demoed some reasonable gear that would help upgrade my system and also set me up with some of his extremely high end rigs for reference. I had a very unusual but wonderful experience visiting Dave, the Audio Doctor. Unusual by means of his home and business in a Victorian home in Jersey City. I arrived 15 minutes early for an 11am appointment on Sunday and was greeted by his down to earth and friendly wife. We spoke for about 15 minutes discussing this old Victorian home while Dave was getting prepared for my arrival. She offered something to drink and I asked for a cup of tea in which she complied graciously. The house was set up with a large variety of top named components in different rooms ranging in prices from affordable to very expensive. I didn't feel I was in a showroom but in a friend's living room which added to the experience. Next up, Dave himself, one of the nicest and enthusiastic person you want to meet. For the next 2 hours we spoke about audio equipment and his knowledge was quite impressive. He worked at some of the high-end audio shops in Manhattan I use to visit with my brother back in the 70s and 80s. I felt as if i was speaking to an old friend. I guess we both got caught up in our interest and enthusiasm of audio equipment that I almost forgot why I was there in the first place. Not once during this time period did Dave try to sell anything. The next hour we discussed music servers and Dacs and did some listening. But what blew me away, Dave offered to bring some components we discussed to my home to audition. Wow, talk about great service! Go to Audio Doctor, and you will have a rather different and most enjoyable auditioning experience. Your audition takes place in an old Victorian house on a quiet suburban street. Entering the house is like entering the tardis! A distinctive Victorian on the outside, but stuffed with advanced (audio) technology on the inside! You will not be hurried or pressured. I was given coffee, introduced to Dave's dogs, and then Dave and I chatted on diverse subjects for half an hour before we got to work. We spent a couple of hours A/B-ing the speakers I had brought with me with the ones I thought I might want to buy and various others in the same price range, until I began to feel I might be imposing on Dave's generosity (which I was assured was not the case). The audition has given me much food for thought, and I'm still cogitating. One certain conclusion however is that I would far rather buy from Dave, than some slippery shark in a glossy Manhattan showroom. Try Audio Doctor. read more
