In one of the long halls, you will find pictures and a written history of the cathedral in both French and English. You are welcome to wander around, observe the religious services, and pray if you wish. The abbey store is an interesting place to visit. It is located in the basement of the abbey and features cheese, preserves, chocolate and other food items made by the monks who live and worship at the abbey. They also sell select items from other abbeys. The cheese is excellent and reasonably priced. The preserves are outstanding as well. We have not tried the other food items but I suspect those are also very good. The store also sells Catholic religious items and religious books. The place where the monks live is off-limits to visitors. The signs will warn you of that. Parking can be a problem if many people are visiting. Either use your GPS or look for the sign and arrow for Saint-Benoit-du-Lac to get there.

It is a relatively modern monastery, built over the course of the early to mid 1900s. We went on a Sunday morning for mass and found the sanctuary full of parishioners and tourists. The Gregorian chant was beautiful to hear, although we weren't able to stay for the whole liturgy due to a very impatient infant. We weren't there for a tour, but did stop to read some of the displays describing the history of the monastery and the rhythms of monastic life. The colored brickwork and overall architecture is beautiful. There aren't a lot of spaces open to the public, but we still enjoyed walking around and seeing some of the snow-covered grounds. The monastery is known for its cheeses and jams, so a visit to the store was on our agenda. The store, however, was located in the basement, and the only access we could find was a flight of stairs. We had a stroller, though, and couldn't find an elevator. We ended up taking turns walking the baby outside while the other person explored the store. The grounds at this time (April) were mostly not open to the public, but I've read that they have some walking trails. When it was my turn, I didn't have much time to look. But it looked like they had a large selection of abbey-made items as well as a bookstore with a good sized children's section. I bought some postcards and a French-language children's missel for a friend, but would have looked longer if I could. The Tall Man picked up a four pack of cheeses for a Swiss friend, who loved it, plus some other goodies, but we wished we had some jam! They didn't have larger bags at the register, but they did have some empty boxes. There are a couple parking lots that quickly filled up for mass. I would love to know if they have an accessible entrance to the store. By the time I found some of the store staff, though, I didn't ask since I needed to go. We noticed others who either left strollers outside or turned back from the abbey entrance.

The best kept secret…read more First, I think Haagen Dazs is the best vanilla ice cream available at the regular market store. I tried other regular ice creams (the Nestlé&Co. kind) and all taste so-so, no where near the HD one. Not to mention the long list of ingredients and they look disgusting if you leave it in the refrigerator for a few hours. The Coaticook Old Fashioned Vanilla ice cream is the one that tastes the closest to the HD. Clearly not the same quality but not far. Then you look at the ingredients. A very short list with the exception of stabilizers which they mention is only 0.2% of the recipe. What's even more surprising, is the amount of fat in the Coaticook Old Fashioned Vanilla ice cream: it is half of that in the Haagen Dazs. So I can eat more ice cream without being (too) worried.

Parcelles brings farm to table to a new level by putting the table in the middle of a farm field. Finding your way to your table at Parcelles you walk through their vegetable garden and past the chickens and are then seated at a picnic table over looking the fields and Lake Memphremagog. It is truly one of the most beautiful settings you can imagine. The menu is a prix fix which in our case included a selection of local cheeses, fresh vegetables, Matane shrimp, and a pizza cooked in their outdoor pizza oven topped off with a blueberry vanilla cake with cream cheese icing. After a recent article in La Presse resulted in a flood of guests descending on Parcelles they now operate by reservation only. Upon arriving, you place your order and pay right away and you are given a picnic basket with your cutlery and plates which you can take to a picnic table or to a spot in the field if you brought your own picnic blanket. Dogs are welcome. The food is as spectacular as the setting. This is truly a spot that everyone must try. It is certainly worth planning a day trip from Montréal to enjoy a meal at Parcelles.

That crispy coated lamb chops are so well seasoned, you'll even want to nibble it off the frenched ribs. I know I did. I'm a fan of crème brûlée so whenever I see it on the menu, my stomach tells me I gotta order it to try. This one did not disappoint. Overall, this was such a lovely, memorable experience.
