We wanted to slow down and enjoy a quiet weekend. This is THE perfect place for that. The location is outstanding, nestled amongst the trees with great views. We opted in for the wine and cheese upon arrival and this ended up being our dinner. It was just enough. Breakfast on Saturday was delicious starting with fresh fruit and a lemon creme topping. Followed by German pancakes, made from apples grown on site, bacon, coffee and OJ. We didn't have breakfast on Sunday as we were meeting a friend, but it sure smelled yummy! They also put out a fresh dessert each evening. The attention to detail, luxury items, comfortable bed and cleanliness make this a safe bet. It's lovely, but not pretentious. Throw in the location, the kind and welcoming Inn owners and you are in for a fabulous stay.

First off, the owners are wonderful, kind, and cook the awesome breakfasts themselves! The location, view, amenities, and environment are all top notch and wonderful! If you are into tennis, the owners are retired tennis pros, and offer lesson games. They have two full size courts and this beautiful modern log cabin lodge on top of a hill with sweeping spectacular views of old natural California. They offer useful coupons to businesses in town with certain packages. This will be our go to Bed and Breakfast Inn in the foothills. This place rates with the best B&B's we have seen in Napa, Carmel, and the Mendocino Coast! Quite close to Calaveras Big Trees park as well. Thanks for a great stay, Chris and Larry!

We arrived to Sonora by way of Ebbetts Pass, winding down through crystal alpine lakes, faerytale meadows and boulders and forests that speak in quiet and ancient tongues. The pass opened upon amber grasses contrasted against lovely sagey-colored trees and verdant yet rugged vineyards. It turns out the Victorian-inspired Barretta Gardens is overseen with a care as golden as the hue of sepia-colored days gone past and motherlodes once legendary for their bounty. Yet breakfasts are as simple, elegant and memorable as any contemporary B&B can boast. The proprietors Astrid and Daniel run an inn as refreshing as the Moroccan mint tea set out every afternoon to greet us from a hot day exploring Gold Country. We found Barretta Gardens flexible and welcoming to our two boys as well. Our only suggestion is that if they choose to turn off each room's A/C while guests are away for the day that they would turn it back on in anticipation for their return in the evening. Baretta Gardens B&B is a rare treasure I hope more visitors to the area will mine for years more to come.

There was also coffee in the room and a full coffee/tea bar in the dining area. The facility had a library den full of interesting titles, puzzles, and games. We LOVED the breakfasts. The menu included many choices: french toast, waffle, omelet, potatoes, veggies, eggs to order, bacon, toast, english muffin and fruit. The portions were extremely generous! The staff were all great including owner Michael who was very attentive to questions we had. We've also stayed at another of his properties (The Victoria Inn) which was also lovely. We definitely plan to be back and I can hardly wait! While we were in the area we ate at Jesus' Restaurant (Mexican across the street), Firewood (delicious pizza), and coffee at Aria. We also enjoyed hard cider at Indigeny Reserve! I definitely recommend staying at the Dunbar!

We got married here!…read more Shopping for venues can get discouraging with food and beverage minimums, extra charges and back-to-back weekend weddings where they kick you out the next day. This place is a cozy, green oasis in one of the cutest towns in America, and the value is incredible. They let us have the run of the place for the whole weekend while we hosted and set up. The staff made it feel like home -- such kind and lovely people. Breakfast for our wedding party was included. Anything we asked for, they made it happen, and we were able to control every aspect of the event: bar, catering, etc. Another perk I didn't anticipate was a 360 view of the venue from the bridal suite, which allowed me to keep an eye on everything while I was getting ready. The suite is basically an apartment, with a full kitchen we were able to cater our rehearsal dinner out of. Most of our guests were able to stay the weekend and walk to the venue from their hotels (they make it easy with their sister hotel the Victoria Inn and associated rentals). Our wedding was a dream that we're sad to wake up from. If this place calls to you, do not hesitate to book.

Each room at the inn (14 rooms total) are different. The website shows pictures of each room so I thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect. I knew I did not want a swinging bed so we went with John's room. They tell you to park on the street and come to the front office to check in and then they show you where to park. On a Friday afternoon the street is pretty full and the spaces are very tight, but we did find a space. When you get to the house, there is no office or any place to go. You press the ring camera and someone walks from behind the house out to greet you. The gentleman walks you to your room and the key (on a large keychain) is hanging in the door. He walks you in and tells you a little bit about the room. In our case he showed us how to use the fire, the mini-split (Heating / HVAC) and where to park. The parking lot is behind the Inn and it is very small. It does not have 14 spaces, and if it is full you have to try and find parking in the alley. Because of this we decided not to move as we were able to park in the lot and we were scared to lose parking. When we took ourbags to the room, I realized that there is very little counter or storage space, not only in the room but in the bathroom as well. In the bathroom you have very little space to put your items. The "closet" that has no door is also very small. The head of the bed is about 4 feet from the toilet and you are looking right at it. The bathroom is pretty old and very pink. The towels are not very soft but the water did get hot pretty quickly. The bed itself is very uncomfortable. The mattress is very hard and every time one of you moves you both feel it. We did not sleep well either night. In this room, there was a mini keurig coffee machine and they provided coffee and creamers. There is also a small mini fridge. There are 2 chairs in front of the fireplace and a chair and small couch at the end of the bed. There are also a lot of books. With all of these things in the room, there is very little walking space and from the other side of the bed to get to the bathroom (especially in the dark) is like an obstacle course to not stub your toes or knees. The property is very quiet and there is an ice machine outside by the front lawn. However there is no breakfast or food available at the Inn. I really was hoping to have a great time, but by Saturday afternoon we were ready to leave. I just did not want to be there anymore. My husband convinced me to stay as we already had dinner reservations for that night, so we did. When you leave, you place the key outisde in the door handle and leave the property.
