I wanted to love this. The idea of descending into the deep off Maui sounds unforgettable. The reality? About 125 feet down to look at a modest little reef, a few small fish, and a boat they sank years ago that's now wearing a coat of algae. That's the whole show. And "show" is the right word. A surprising amount of the experience is dedicated to a scripted performance between the "pilot" below and a "controller" up top, a steady stream of "roger this" and "roger that" theatrics that's clearly meant to manufacture drama. It doesn't add wonder. It just fills time, and after a while it feels less like an adventure and more like being talked at while you wait for something that never really arrives. For the price, the substance simply isn't there. You're paying premium money for a brief look at an underwhelming patch of seafloor, wrapped in a lot of manufactured atmosphere. If you genuinely want to see Maui's marine life, a decent snorkel trip will show you more color, more fish, and more magic for a fraction of the cost. Two stars instead of one only because the sub itself is clean and the staff are pleasant. But on value and the actual experience? This was hype over substance. I'd skip it and put the money toward something that delivers. read more

SUBMARINE RIDE TO A SUNKEN SHIP. We immediately booked this while we were planning on things to do on Maui, I think we had it reserved before we even booked anywhere to stay. We did a similar experience in Catalina but that was more of a "submersible" that didn't submerge into the water and was more like riding in the bottom of a boat with windows. Atlantis is a "true" submarine that will take you down 130 ft into the water and is fully submersed. You start the day meeting at the wharf and then take a boat fast 30 minute board ride to the actual submarine thats parked out deeper in the water. On the way you get great views of Maui from the water and you get to go down a hatch to get into the sub, super cool. The submarine ride is about an hour, the best part is getting very close to sunken boat that was purposely placed there as a coral and marine life habitat. There will be numerous fish swimming about the boat and the sub rotates so you'll get good views of it no matter where you sit. read more

This tour was fun and exciting!! You checkin at the Atlantis shop then walk down to the pier where you'll wait in a seating area before boarding. You'll take a pic prior to boarding and have the opportunity to purchase for $20 at the end. The tour takes you to the bottom of the ocean where you'll see some cool fish, reefs and a sunken boat. No matter what side of the submarine you're on, you'll get the chance to take photos and record the under the sea life so stay ready with your camera. The adventure was so exciting and seeing another world and seeing sharks and fish hunting fish was awesome. This is a MUST do when visiting Maui Hawaii. This well organized submarine tour is sooo much fun. Yes and well worth the cost. Kids will be amazed. A beautiful boat ride to the loading area is more like a Lahaina site seeing viewing. Staff/Crew are super professional and marine safety knowledgeable. Had a great experience in Atlantis Submarines! A unique way to touch the floor of the ocean at 130 Ft below sea level without scuba diving. While you will definitely see a lot more variety of fish while snorkeling instead, this is still a good experience to see the ship wreck and get to the ocean floor. Reduced a star cause of the price point & number of people in the submarine, you are quite squashed together, but everyone has a window or half a window to themselves for a good view. read more

The entire experience at Atlantis Submarines was out of this world. Cat, who checked us in, was clear with instructions and full of energy. Randy, our narrator, was funny and a delight. His stories and clever puns made the bottom of the ocean exciting and something to remember. The submarine has extra large portholes that make it extremely easy to see and photograph the scenery. We didn't go during "whale season" but we did see sharks and plenty of colorful fish. We will be back again to see the whales. read more

What a fun experience!!! We booked our tickets via the adventure & experiences concierge at our resort- the Hyatt. The tour starts off in a boat which ferries you from the pier to the submarine. I thought it was really cool how they gave us an opportunity to watch the submarine surface and we waited a very short time for the previous batch of folks to get off the submarine. The submarine trip was a very interesting 45min, filled with amazing things to see underwater, fun narration of exciting facts and jokes. I thought it was great how every seat in the sub had a cool window to look out from...the kids thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was one of the highlights of their Maui trip. I was a little concerned about seasickness , but I was absolutely fine and did not need any medication. Definitely recommend it as a family friendly adventure! read more

Wonderfully magical experience. Way better than the Finding Nemo ride at Disneyland. Friendly staff and informative guides. You take a 10 minute boat ride from the wharf to the submarine, which gives a beautiful view of the island. The submarine wasn't overly crowded first ride of the day, and we were able to spread out a bit. The sub captain turns it around to make sure both sides can see points of interest, nobody misses out. You can purchase $100.00 gift cards for about $80.00 each at the Costco in Maui. This will save you some money as these tickets are expensive. We went on a shuttle boat for about 10 minutes from the harbor, then transferred to the submarine for a 45 minute dive. It was fun as we got to see sharks, octopus, coral reefs, and artifacts that the company intentionally placed down there (anchors and a ship wreckage). This is such a crazy touristy experience that it's hard to take the process of writing a review seriously. The fact is that even though this dive crew goes the same place multiple times a day they are able to make it an interesting experience for you every time. This can happen for a couple reasons. One reason is the people working there really enjoy their job even though the safety and ushering of tourists in and out of a small submersible is a tankless task. Hopefully they're getting paid well. The second reason is that all of the individuals working there are passionate about the ocean. They enjoy the experience as much as the tourists I'm sure. Now that the critique of the individuals working there is over we can move on to the experience itself. My description of the experience is this: Wow! You pay a lot of money You ride out from the docks to the dive site on a boat with a bunch of tourists. The submarine comes up out of the water and you are ushered from one vessel to the other. Then you die for 45 minutes. You get to see we're shrimp come from. It's the deep blue....... It's not cheap but it's worth every penny, an amazing family experience. I just want to say thank you to everybody there for giving us a great afternoon experience. read more

I was a little skeptical of such a touristy activity, but my experience was really great. You get to the Atlantis building and check in and get your boarding pass. After arriving at slip 5 at Lahaina harbor, the crew will give instructions to board the vessel that takes you out to the submarine. It's only a five minute trip out of the harbor to the submarine where the crew lashes the boat to the sub, attached to another boat. It's an easy walk onto the sub, then down the ladder below. The space is large with seats quite close together. Every seat has a great view off either side through a port hole with a fish identification card and map. There is a gauge on both sides showing the depth. The sub is well ventilated with air conditioning constantly blowing and a pretty open space. It's really very comfortable. When ready the crew battens down the vessel and the sub descends. The Atlantis navigates around a coral reef, viewing fish, eels, seaweed and coral. The vessel circles around the reef so both sides can see all of the coral. The fish are most active early in the morning. The colors are quite drab because the water absorbs the light, red first, but you can see the yellows and oranges and greens vividly at that depth. The vessel passes through two anchors from whaling ships, one on each side, then heads to a shipwreck. The shipwreck is really cool with a lot of great, large fish and coral forming on the wooden craft. Atlantis makes a couple of passes on both sides so there are a lot of great views. When finished, the craft returns to the support vessel and rises. The crew is friendly, funny and really great. They have a lot of fun, terrible, dry jokes, cheesy music and a really great sense of humor. Leaving the Atlantis, you get on the support vessel that has the next group of people. Once those people are all in the sub, the transport boat pulls away for a great view of the submarine diving and a photo op. I think this experience is great. It's so well organized. The people are wonderful. I don't get seasick and I'm not claustrophobic in general, but I thought there was little rocking on the ocean, never felt stuffed in the Atlantis. I went here a few years ago and I LOVED IT. We went to Maui and had the adventure of a lifetime, between the hurricane, earthquake and fires. The day before the hurricane, we went here. I'm extremely claustrophobic, but I went with my MIL and family and it was the most beautiful adventure and the closest I would ever go under water. Yes it doesn't have good reviews on Yelp but I think my toddler would have enjoyed it more and I wouldn't be so upset about the amount of money I spent. It's significantly cheaper and they bring sea creatures to the window so you can see. But this tour, you see bunch of dead corals, some fishes, some sunken ships that they put there. The fishes and dead corals, you can see plenty of for free if you go snorkeling. Sunken ships, I can care less about. For hundreds of dollars spent on this tour, it was definitely not worth it being crammed into the submarine, sitting back to back with a stranger. This was an amazing adventure! Poor weather required us to visit the dive site that is 2 miles out. The whole trip is narrated by a guild who with the exception of a few really bad but not unexpected puns is full of great facts and insight into the deep. Once you reach the sub you watch it surface and then climb down a 12' ladder. On the sub you sit back to back with other guests and there isn't a bad seat to be had! While on our dive we saw coral reef sharks, an eagle ray, several types of fish, star fish, and so much more! It was an amazing experience and perfect for the whole family! read more

This is such a great adventure for families with young kids. We booked through their website and the process was seamless. The checkin location is right across the Lahaina Bangan Court. You first take a short 10-15 mins boat ride and stop in the middle of the ocean. This is where you see the submarine emerge. We were apprehensive about going from the boat to submarine but it was super safe. Once you are in the submarine it's just fascinating how quickly you reach the ocean bed. After that you will be just stuck to the large windows admiring all the fish and corals outside. We were lucky to spot reef sharks, Manta rays, octopus and tons of other fish. The departure point was very close to the banyan tree park in the Front Street shopping area. From the pier, a boat takes you out into the water and from there you enter the submarine. The tour advertises itself as being 1 hour and 45 minutes, and of that you spend about 45 minutes underwater in the sub. The interior is a little cramped, but it did not bother me at all. The visibility was not the best the day I went, but I still saw a good amount of fish and other marine life. I thought it was just alright, but not worth the price of $124 pp plus tax. Very tight space in the sub. If you are claustrophobic, which I'm not, it was still a bit tight. Imagine sardines in a can while under water with no air condition (or at least I didn't feel any). If sitting next to someone with even slightly bigger butt or with body odor, good luck! Just scoot your bum all the way forward and stick your nose to the window the entire time and pray like I did. Overall, I would pay no more than $50. However, I will say that customer service and the staff were great especially over the phone. We got the ultimate package and they were quick to call in our tickets to the other venues. I was really excited about this adventure, but it was a bit disappointing. Before boarding the boat they take a souvenir photo of you that you can buy only as an 8 x 10 print (no digital File)for $20 . Then a boat takes you to the submarine . There is a starburst and port side . The better side to sit on was the starburst side as there was more activity and sea life lurking. The fish were a bit colorless and bland. Amazing experience! Worth the price. Need to do at least once in your life. Allow extra time to find parking. Front Street can be madness. We almost missed the tour. Cat has unbelievable customer service. She checked us in quick and gave us a rushed escort short cut to make the boat. Cat also gave us a free post card. After the tour Cat was standing by to validate parking with a stamp, collect post cards that she would personally mail, and hand out Luau tickets. I thought this level of customer service was exceptional for an excursion! Thank you Cat! The boat to get to the submarine was easy and added some fun. The submarine was impressive. It fully submerges 130 feet below the surface where only about 1% of the human population has gone. We saw sharks, star fish, a ship, fish and coral. Had fun while learning. Our guide was energetic, nice and patient! I have always only been a snorkeler... but seeing deep below makes me want to learn how to scuba. This is a great experience. You'll be happy if you find time for it. You will get to see Maui from deep below. I was looking for something fun to do for my birthday weekend and I chose to take a tour with Atlantis Submarine. The staff were friendly and made the tour a fun experience. Everyone will have a window seat and it is nice and air conditioned so it won't get too hot. The pilot does maneuver the sub so that everyone gets a chance to see the sites. We were lucky enough to see a variety of fish, moray eels, spotted eagle rays, and white tip reef sharks. If you are Kama'aina, they have a deal where the tour is $30 on the weekends. Definitely something to look into if you're looking for something new to do with the family. read more

Journey to the Bottom of the Sea December 13, 2015 is a significant date for Atlantis Maui. For a mere $1 Atlantis Maui acquired the Carthaginian= sank the ship for the benefit of the sea and coral. That was 10 years ago Today, and I had the great privilege of seeing what this sunken ship has done for Lahaina Harbor. Its provided a home for marine life, coral happily grows on the body of the ship. Many fishes; sharks and hawaiian marine life make their home around the Carthaginian. Atlantis; a submarine that seats about 50 people on each "dive". Each seat has its own portal providing a remarkable view of the under water world. Diving as deep as 130 feet; the species of fish and other marine habitat were plentiful Even the sharks seem happy down there. It seems you must have some actor background to work at the Atlantis as there were quite a few comics guiding us through. In addition to their humorous performance and explanations, they were also very conscience of the safety for all. From the moment you step onto the transporter, then into the submarine and back out, the crew had safety instructions for each step of the way. Their check in procedure is simple and clear. If you already have your boarding pass just walk on over to slip # 18. There is a tented area to wait out of the hot sun.
