Visited this area for the first time and our friends brought us here for an alfresco dinner last night. Simply amazing. Every single thing from the appetizers to the dessert was perfection. In the best we ever had category was the caprese salad, seared GIANT scallops, the seared tuna dish and the two desserts! We've had over sixty years worth of strawberry shortcakes and chocolate cakes...the four of us demolished them both. My girlfriend and I both ordered the Atlantic halibut which is hard to cook and keep moist. Well it's moist here....wrapped in prosciutto and topped with an herb butter. It'd also be in the best ever had category except we've never seen it offered in any other restaurant. Service was first rate and viognier wine was a bargain. Some food bad, some ok, service uneven, and it doesn't pay to complain unless you want your complaint to fall on deaf ears, AND get repaid by the chef with 80% of your cioppino's mussels served broken-shelled and 20% of them connected by byssus thread. And 30 minutes after eating having a raging GI issue that is getting worse. You enter and the hall feels convention center-esque. Liked the jellyfish tank, nice. Tables fine, waitress sweet / nice, place gets noisy. Good Bloody Mary, wife liked her coffe/Bailey's drink. Our group ordered apps, calamari ok with non-oily breading. Didn't try the Sicilian meatballs because I am half Sicilian and we NEVER put sausage in meatballs - they can call them what they want, but grandma wouldn't call them meatballs; however, persons really enjoyed them. Lobster dip had some lobster but was absent seafood flavor. Farmers Board charcuterie presented a huge issue - some of us felt the salami was off, so I brought it up. I preserve and cure meats, work with game including moose, etc. "Hostess" floating around the tables was told about it, then she came back with a story that the chef said cured meats can't go bad. She asked if there was anything else she could do, so I told her if only listening to a complaint was all she was going to do then we were done. WTH? I will say the salmon, nuts, cheeses, and other items were good - kept picking at the nuts. Ordered the cioppino. Came lukewarm, decent broth at least, no bread served with it. 4 of the 5 mussels came broken-shelled - no good restaurant does that - plus byssus thread still attached to 2! Another in our party also got cioppino, he had 0 / no broken shells - guess you saved them for me (having a single broken mussel you might chalk up to very poor quality control / lazy staff, but 80% is another story). Ok, your chef was upset because I complained / we didn't like the salami, so he did that to my food? Bah humbug...and then the (tasty) roasted bread comes 8 minutes after tepid cioppino service, that is some more unimpressive kitchen service. My wife thought her salmon was ok, nothing special but ok. So our party leaves and 30 minutes after driving thru the snow my colon is burbling, made it home before it started blowing out and I want to contact the restaurant, the owner, etc. Merry Christmas. My wife started with the chop chop salad, and had the steak & cheese for her meal. I split a crab cake app, and a calamari app with others, and had the maple bourbon salmon for my entree. The salad had no flare. She ate about half and pushed the plate to the side... I tried a couple of bites and did the same. There was hardly any meat in the steak and cheese, and we asked for it to be made with blue cheese instead of cheddar (which they didn't). Both were disappointing. The crab cake was tasty, though could have used additional sauce. I also liked the calamari, plenty of food in the dish, and it tasted fresh. The sauce on the salmon was great, it was cooked well, and I enjoyed the brussel sprouts. I won't be back. For some reason they gave us an 8:00 reservation on Fathers Day. Great! We walked in, and I notice on the door that they close at 8:00. Uh oh. From the moment we walk in it's a big inconvenience to everyone that we are there. Waitress comes over and says I need your order right away. Cleanup crew is hovering. I ordered an old fashioned and it was half water. That'll be $20. Order a glass of wine. No one brings it. Have to walk to bar and disturb they guy who wishes we were gone. Not once after meal delivery did waitress return for follow ups. It's not hard to do. If you close at 8:00, make your last reservation at 7:00. What kind of idiot goes out to dinner at a seafood restaurant when they don't even like seafood? Me! We had initially agreed to meet friends here a few months back. At that time, I checked the menu online and quickly found something I could eat. So when we decided to stop in after a walk on the beach, I thought finding something on the menu would be no problem. Then we sat down and looked at the new (smaller) menu. As I was freaking out and scrambling to find something to eat, our server June came over and put my mind at ease. The kitchen was wonderful about changing the crab spaghetti to chicken, and it was absolutely delicious. I cannot express how sweet and accommodating June was about this, and how much I appreciated it. My husband is a seafood lover, and he has wanted to try the Atlantic Grill for a while. Had a little trepidation based on previous reviews but was also trying to make a very last minute (4 hours before) reservation on a Friday evening on a good-weather night on the Seacoast and was tired of looking around Portsmouth to find a place. Friend sugg the Grill, I clicked on the site, found a 7:15 opening either inside or outside (out!) and was done. Three of us on the patio which is attractive in the evening with lighting and spaced tables, etc. Temps in mid 60's but we were comfortable with heater. Service was polite, friendly, available. Pulled Pork sandwich, salmon and fish 'n chips. Three diff mocktails. Shared bread pudding for dessert. Overall it was delightful. Food came out without too long a wait, tasty, temps good. My fish was battered and not at all greasy which was a happy thing. Fresh tasting and crispy. My friends were also very happy with their meals and the bread pudding (they warn you it will take 20 minutes which was smart) was the perfect ending. The only (minimal) complaint I had was that the chairs on the patio were a bit uncomfortable but that could have been a combination of derriere and a two hour dinner! (Also, we did ask about timing because we knew that ordering the bread pudding and eating it might put us over their 2-hour dining limit but when we asked the waiter, he told us we were part of the final seating, so not to worry. That was very nice of him.) Parking was plentiful which was a phew. Pricing is on the higher end ($20+ to $40 for entrees) so check the menu beforehand if that's a concern. Three entrees plus three mocktails plus the bread pudding and 20%-ish tip came out about $118. They appear to be respectful of COVID protocols, though those are lifting. But make sure to bring a mask for moving to and from your table. Serving/waitstaff are still masked. read more

The negative reviews here are definitely misleading because this is an awesome restaurant. The vibe of the restaurant was upscale casual and would be perfect for a fancy dinner/date or just a night out. Here's what I ordered: Fried Clams- pretty solid. You can get way better down the street at Rays but it's still a solid appetizer. Meatballs- I don't eat meat but according to my Dad, he said the meatballs had nice flavor and some spicyness Smoked Salmon- amazing! The salmon was a home-smoked salmon steak and had great smoky flavor. They literally have a smoker in the kitchen. Small garden salad with grilled salmon - the small salad was the perfect size and came with house made red wine vinaigrette. Very open....widest gap between tables you will see anywhere. The bar side has loads of TVs and cozy area with a gas fireplace. The main dinning area is rather spartan . Run by the folks at River House in Portsmouth with very similar fare but more red meat add ons. See review for River House :good chowder and decent service. I wanted to be wowed but I left unsure if I'd go back. First of all, the building and grounds are gorgeous. We ate outside and it was lovely. Our server, Jaimee, was very friendly and knowledgable. The lobster and artichoke app with delicious and had tons of lobster and plenty of crispy baguette slices. It was the best dish of the night. We also got the crab cakes which were chock full of crab and tasty. The remoulade sauce had quite a kick to it, which I personally thought overwhelmed the delicate crab flavor. The seared scallop entree was such a disappointment. The scallops were only seared on one side, though cooked through. The corn pudding was very yummy, but the heavy handed, earthy, locally foraged mushrooms didn't belong on the plate. They were better suited to a beef or game dish. The gnocchi on this plate should have gone in the garbage. They are a disgrace. Burned, tough and gummy, totally indistinguishable as gnocchi in shape or taste (see photo). I would have sent it back, but I noticed other diners with the same plate. Apparently, this is their version of gnocchi. PLEASE stop making these immediately. The swordfish special was VERY pricy at $31 for a relatively small portion. I may return for apps and drinks outside, but I'd be hard pressed to spend another $100+ there again. read more

Nice BIG rooms, as uncrowded as the parking lot. The decor and atmosphere are kind of like a Weathervane, but more upscale. The floors have that milk paint look that is very New England. The ceiling in the bar area is beautiful wood, which looks gorgeous, but unfortunately makes the room kind of loud. The only nod towards sound dampening is about half of the room is carpeted. Our waitress Josephine was delightful. She was knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. Couldn't ask for better. One of my pet peeves is when somebody comes by the table to ask about your meal, but doesn't introduce himself. I am always tempted to ask "who are you?" This did NOT happen here. I was thrilled! A nice young lady stopped by and said "Hi, I'm Becky the manager. How did you enjoy your meal tonight?" Perfect. Is this so hard to do, other restaurant people? Oh right, the food. After all it's a restaurant review and maybe I ought to touch on the actual product. My filet was cut-with-a-feather delicious, with just the right amount of "crust." The creamed kale was a very nice surprise. I'm not a fan of creamed spinach, so I was a little leary. But it tastes only like a distant relation and the crunch on top and slivers of (I'm guessing) Parmesian cheese were a nice addition to the dish. The broccoli was a bit tough, but still tasty. The veggie burger looked great and reportedly tasted just fine. The sweet potato fries also looked inviting and crispy. The lobster roll was just okay. Pretty plain. I guess people can be pretty picky about their lobster rolls around here, so they don't venture too far into the daring category. Meat and mayo were predominant. I prefer some crunch somehow (either with celery, onion or even carrot), some lemon and some celery seed. Others will rejoice that they aren't straying from the basics. To each his own. My only real disappointment was that when I booked the reservation I told them that this was a birthday celebration for one of the people in my group. I went over who it was and asked for a "suprise" desert with a candle. Well, since I'm griping I guess that you know what happened. The memo clearly didn't get to our server, and they forgot. Not the end of the world, but it was a disappointing end to an otherwise perfect evening. So yes, I'll be back. No hard feelings. Everyone we spoke with (or overheard) was very nice. The food was tasty. The place is clean and moderately upscale to boot. Prices are a bit aggressive for the experience, but that's gotta be one whopper of a mortgage on this massive undertaking. We did not feel welcomed here at all. We arrived at 5 pm & asked to sit outside. They immediately told us that there were reservations for all the tables outside for 7 pm, so we'd have to be done by then. When we went outside, only 2 tables were occupied & we were seated by the waitress station. We asked to be moved & were again told that all the tables had reservations. I rarely write reviews, especially bad ones but I felt the need to give feedback. We arrived at the restaurant 10 minutes before closing time and requested to sit outside. Even though there were plenty of available tables we were seated right next to the wait station. We spent the entire meal listening to the staff and watching them clean up for the night. We shared a bowl of mediocre chowder. My boyfriend ordered a southwestern salad that was very pedestrian and had little flavor. I ordered a salmon dish. The salmon was "fine". The broccolini was cold. I had to send it back to be heated up. The rice had no flavor. The presentation of all of the food was boring. We didn't finish any of it. My boyfriend and I are not picky eaters. We we both travel for a living and enjoy trying local dishes everywhere we go. Only twice in 7 years have we ever sent anything back to be cooked or changed. We never complain and are easy to please. But this meal just wasn't good. The only decent thing was a gin cocktail that we tried. The staff was ok but not very friendly. We will never return and do not recommend trying this restaurant. We spent 3 days in Portsmouth and this was the only disappointment of our trip. Next, the seafood chowder was creamy but there wasn't any chunks of the seafood in it! We stopped in after work for a little mini celebration and some dinner on a Friday late afternoon into the evening. We've been here before and found that we really enjoy sitting in the bar area - love the ambiance in that section and we love Carly, who's been our waitress each time we've been there. She is AWESOME! I had the Fried Haddock meal with sweet potato fries and cole slaw, and my husband had the Broiled Scallops meal with risotto and creamed kale. His meal actually came out with fried kale, which neither of us had ever had - delicious! Actually, I'd never had kale until then - yummy but a little heavy handed on the salt, very good just the same. He did get the creamed kale that his meal was supposed to come out with, and he liked that even more than the fried kale. My meal was delicious - fried haddock nuggets were cooked to perfection - not undercooked as happens so many times in other restaurants and not overcooked either. Their sweet potato fries are always delicious - here and at The River House as well. We really love that this is such a great place to head to that isn't downtown! Plenty of parking that you don't have to pay the meter for and no fighting downtown traffic. It's a little on the pricey side for some of the menu items. I think it's great that the owner comes out and stops at tables to see how things are - very nice touch. I'm not a seafood person so can't speak to that but my 30 something dollar steak was "unimpressive" Although cooked well I wasn't "wowed" I think this restaurant has good intentions and is banking off its excellent location in Rye, which for the area should be offering a little more "wow" for the money spent. I discovered this restaurant during the pandemic. They have outdoor seating with heat lamps that are effective. I visited a handful of times and all were good experiences. One visit was exceptional and memorable due to our waitress Melissa. I have been meaning to write a review as she deserves so much credit. I am very picky about ordering cooked salmon and had stopped ordering it for years due to many places not cooking it correctly and making it too well done and dry. I made a comment about wanting salmon but not wanting to risk not being happy with it. Melissa actually cared to listen and understand what I wanted. She said she will make sure its cooked exactly how I wanted. I was initially skeptical as no place for years previously was able to do medium rare correctly. To my surprise they nailed it! It was moist, tasty and perfectly medium rare. In addition, her attention to detail to my friend was also superb. I have rarely seen a waitress go above and beyond to make sure the table has such a satisfying time. She suggested what wine(s) to pair with the food. According to my friend she made a great recommendation. I don't drink alcohol but from the service I saw with that it was definitely more attentive than other places/waitresses, and I usually eat out a few times a week. Half the restaurant appeared empty...the 2 girls at the front looked on their iPad for a table and after 5-10 minutes said "oh it's going to be a 30/35 minute wait". Your restaurant appears to not have been staffed. The parking lot was half empty and no one else was waiting for a table. Not going back to even try it. Appears to be a tourist trap.
