My husband and I stopped by Lazy Jacks on a New England road trip and it was a decent experience. We opted to share the jerk chicken sandwich, and he also got a side of the clam chowder soup. The chicken seemed like a cheap cut of meat, but the jerk seasoning was really good at least. I liked their french fries, but the ranch that I used for dipping was pretty subpar. It was too thick for my liking. My husband did like his chowder and felt that was the best part of his meal. The real appeal of this place is the fun and colorful outdoor patio that overlooks the Piscataqua River with a handful of large tugboats as a backdrop. The question to me would be what are you looking for? If you are looking for not the top quality of food and bucket drinks by the water, this could be your place. We ordered some egg rolls for an appetizer, and they were still cold in the middle. I'm not entirely sure what happened here, since they were not busy at the time. Came here on a relatively busy Sunday afternoon, was able to get a seat immediately with a nice view of the harbor. The food was pretty good and the vibe was quite cute. Our waitress was not very knowledgeable of the menu (she couldn't tell us how much the drinks we wanted to order were) and wasn't very attentive, though this might have just been because it was very busy with what seemed like only a few waiters on staff. Overall, would recommend (especially if there isn't a wait) -- good food, a great view, and decent service (though you should expect it be a bit slow)! read more

Put a 3% CC fee on the bill without telling you in advance or asking you how you're paying (not a large party thing, just if you pay by CC) Table next to us was done and gone before we got our food, even though they ordered literally 1 min before ...all in all, just 2* at best b/c you can look out on 4 tugboats and some water. Lazy Jacks is a beach style bar located on the river in the area of downtown Portsmouth called Tugboat Alley. It has a nice, laid back atmosphere which is perfect to enjoy a cocktail or beer and some New England style seafood. It is outdoor seating only, so you need to pick a good weather day for the best experience. They are seasonally open for this reason. The menu isn't huge but they offer all of the typical seafood fair that is to be expected, along with a few other non seafood options. I prefer this spot to some of the other waterfront restaurants and bars mostly for the atmosphere. You almost forget that you are in downtown Portsmouth and not on a beach. It is definitely the place you want to go to if you aren't looking for anything fancy but has a fun vibe. read more

The food here is quite good. The service was great. We had calamari for appetizer. Being from the west coast, I enjoy calamari, and this is by far one of the better tasting calamari I've had. The flavor of the breading is mouth watering. I had the haddock sandwich for my meal, which also was very yummy and filling. =D. The coleslaw though was not much to write home about. Ive had creamier and better tasting. The slaw seemed to have a different funky taste. The tacos are grilled haddock, and really good. I dont think you'll go wrong here. Unbelievable! The best Bang Bang shrimp EVER! The Lobster roll is crustacean perfection on a potato bun that has just the right amount of tender and toasted. Big chunks of Lobster, tossed in a tease of mayonnaise and spices, just enough to make it incredibly flavorful yet not overpowering the perfect freshness of the lobster. Upgrade to the onion rings for the side, so delicately breaded and delightfully crisp on the outside, so light you expect them to float away. The taste of the sweet onion and the spicy toasted shell are like Astaire and Rogers, dancing the perfect two-step in you mouth! So happy to have found this spot in my old stomping grounds, rocketed to the top of my list of favorites. THIS PLACE IS AWFUL. Don't waste your time especially if you're from Rhode Island!! Came here from RI and my friends and I were turned down service because our RI IDs are "fake". All of our IDs are real (everyone is over 25 and some of us are pushing 30)....this security guard was going back and forth with us trying to tell us we had the wrong number of digits on our IDs that aren't even fake. Pulled up the RI DMV website proving him wrong and he proceeded to tell me the dmv website was wrong lol. We said we would bring a cop here to verify it and he then said the cops can be wrong also and he would tell them to go away. Apparently this man knows more than law enforcement and the state of RI about ids. Also note that it took 30 min for someone to even come to our take to take our order and another 10 min for them to tell us they won't serve us. read more

Dont think it was fresh. Now the service? Hmmmm . Had to ask for silverware, ketchup, salt and pepper and a refill of my soda. I've been here many times with friends and family, each time it's always a semi great time. Today me and a group of friends tried to get a table and celebrate our last few days together before we graduate from college. When we ask the owner Missy if we could put our names in for a table she said "no we aren't giving tables out for kids to drink. " If I'm not mistaken lazy jacks is mainly a place where young adults go to drink, eat and hang out. Overall I'm disappointed by the owners lack of warmth towards costumers and lack of desire to be accommodating because this place has great potential. read more

I moved to Portsmouth about a year ago, and since then I have been looking for a nice restaurant where I can have a comfortable solo lunch on the river. Lazy Jacks has become my place. I have been there for lunch twice and have enjoyed it both times. During my visits it has been quiet to moderately busy; much calmer, and far less frenetic, than the other nearby restaurants that overlook the river. I never felt that they were trying to move me in and out quickly, as I have found in some of the nearby restaurants. Most of the food is good, and I would rate the Bang Bang Shrimp as excellent. The service has always been attentive and friendly. Two things to keep in mind, First, I have not been there for either happy hour or dinner, I can only speak to lunch time. At these other times, the vibe may, or may not, be totally different. Secondly, unlike many of the nearby restaurants on Bow Street which are up higher, Lazy Jacks is at street level. I have not found that this was not detrimental to my enjoyment of the view. read more

I went here in Portsmouth, NH, today for a late lunch. Drink: ice water w/lemon. Not many guests. Took a while just to get a cup of water! So, i ordered the fish tacos with seasoned fries. The taco was grilled on one side, a paultry few pieces of fish, pico, sauce, something that looked like lettuce. And a small portion of fries. This meal is served on a white square plate. Disappointing. $14. I could go down the street and get a burger with fries, larger portions for the same. I could even buy the same ingredients at Market Basket and do far better. This is a great atmosphere for drinks at night by the water! It is definitely a small area that fills up pretty fast so I would make this a first stop destination. They do have a good amount of seating so you'll most likely be able to find a spot to hang out for a while. The rum punch bucket has a decent amount of alcohol without being too strong. If you like coconut then this drink is for you. Decent beer selection for being such a small bar. As far as price goes I would say the drinks are moderately priced for a downtown Portsmouth bar. read more

The dressing is fantastic Coconut mussels 5/5 again, flavorful. The seafood quality is great. Potstickers 1/5 - avoid. Kinda weird and not great Clam chowder 4/5 - decent, not the best I've had. Mains Haddock Sandwich 6/5 - yeah, it was that good. Who would have thought a gaunt slab of delicious fried fish plopped on a buttery bun with cheese and lettuce was a good idea? Trust me, it was. The food and drinks were great but, my waitress Bri left a bitter taste in my mouth. She did not seem like she wanted to be there at all and was even rude to my wife anytime she asked for anything. The worst part is when we were leaving we heard her talking to one of her co workers about "what bitches" some of the customers were. Will not be coming back because of how rude some of the staff was and how ungrateful they were of their customers. Super slow service at the bar on a busy Saturday night; bartenders need to pick up the pace to meet the high demand for drinks. The bar is located in a terrible spot and the crowd bottlenecks in an effort to get drinks. Once we finally got our drinks they were poorly made. I got a Tom Collins which tasted like marshmallows for some reason...another person in our group got a vodka soda which was the worst I have ever tasted. Drinks were gross + improperly made. AWFUL customer sevice! Went there this Sunday and put our name in for lunch and was told a 45 minute wait. No problem....we shoppped for 45 mins and came back. I checked where we were in the queue and was told another 45 minutes. The young hostess who had a bit of an attitude told me the wait times are aproximate. I said i get it and could understand another 15-20 minutes. The best part is she was telling people putting they're names in now that there was 45 min to an hour wait.? I just discovered this place this year, and I'm glad I did! I moved from Portsmouth to the Portland, Maine area several years ago and don't get out in Portsmouth too often, but I've been able to check this place out a few times and am pretty impressed. Theme: tiki bar, but on the decks and as a restaurant/bar combo. It's generally pretty chill here as it's off the beaten path down Bow Street. I've been here twice for drinks, once during a storm where my friend and I were the only ones there. We were sitting by the water, and the window flaps were still open. It was raining but it wasn't super heavy so we elected to sit by the water. We did not get wet at all, and were having a great time, until the water from above us finally gave way and fell right onto our table! The waiter was so kind he comped our drinks completely! We weren't expecting that at all considering it was our own fault we sat where we sat. It was much appreciated! The other time I came here for drinks I ordered some type of drink that came in a bucket, fruity rum goodness. It was definitely priced well in comparison with other places down on the "decks." The third time I came here I met a bunch of friends for dinner and drinks. The place was very busy but we were able to get a few tables pushed together for us, and our server was nice, friendly, and prompt. All of our orders came out perfect, and no one complained about the food at all! I got the caprese salad (which is actually quite large) and a small side of buffalo chicken tenders (which appeared to be fresh not frozen).
