Some nights I just don't want to cook. The night we went to Athens was a night that I wanted a nice grinder. I've eaten here before but I didn't review it. It's a local Des Moines restaurant. I ordered the cold cuts grinder, it was a good grinder. I also got the cheese bread and dolmades. Everything was good and I love the quick friendly service, but there are things... The bread was overly toasted, so it was crunchy through instead of a bit of that nice chewy texture of the bread that I'm used to. The meats were a bit lacking compared to the ratio of the bread. I live in Wesley homes in the north end of Des Moines and wanted to grab a quick pizza. Athens is about as close as it gets, right in the heart of Des Moines on Marine View Drive. I ordered an Athens 14" over the phone and it was ready in 15 minutes on a Friday night about 7:30PM. The restaurant is in a small strip of three stores next to a vape shop. The inside is very spartan and not very inviting with harsh fluorescent lights so I am not inclined to want to eat-in there. The pizza was ready on time and when I got it home, I briefly reheated the slices in my microwave and it was very good. The other menu selections looked interesting. We had 4 slices each and had 4 slices left over so the 10" would probably be more than enough for 2 people. read more

Lasagne tasted like it came out of a chef boyardee can. The lamb in the gyro was not warm. The bread was burnt. One of the back of the house people came and sat at a table and got on some facetime call that was very loud and once done with that played music loud enough for us to hear from 2 tables away. Very disappointed. The dining area is in dire need of a cleanup. The walls are dirty, especially behind the host stand, the booths are ripped up, the bathroom smells strongly of cigarette smoke, and the kitchen looked dirty. All right, I saw the previous bad reviews but was told by a reliable source that their baked lasagna is legit good! So I came in with my friend during weekday lunch hours. My friend got the baked lasagna and I chose the meatball ravioli in marinara sauce. Now , these entrees are reasonably priced ($15.95 per) and also come with a side of salad/ soup and garlic bread. We opted only for garlic breads. The meals came out in pretty large portions and piping HOT! Everything was well seasoned with a little kick to it. Ravioli was cooked well but not soggy-soft. My friend's lasagna was perfect according to him. Garlic breads were fresh and crispy, but I didn't taste much garlic to them at all unfortunately. Service was very friendly and attentive as well. All in all, I will come back. It's a decent spot if you're ever craving some semi Italian comfort food. read more

I'm so surprised Athens doesn't have a higher rating! Their little restaurant is located near the Des Moines Marina. It's not updated or fancy, but it is warm and evident that it's family based. Their Spanakopita kills it! So flaky, creamy and satisfying. My only complaint is that the portion isn't larger. We are vegetarian, and it's so nice to see that literally half of their pizza menu is vegetarian. All three of them are yummy. Lastly, their baked manicotti is one to try. It's not Greek, but it's SO perfectly cheesy. Apart from the food, another highlight is that they offer pitchers of beer. Which, with a cranky toddler, this is sometimes needed. read more

Delicious!! We ordered gyro combos during the COVID shelter and picked up. Each combo included a gyro, rice, veggies, baked lemon potato and a Greek salad. There was plenty of food!! The gyro was devoured, very delicious. It has lots of tzatziki, which I loved. The potato had a hint of lemon. I wasn't crazy about the veggies, but that could have been due to transit. The Greek Salad was fresh, made of chopped cucumber, tomatoes, onion and calamata olives. The business was very gracious. We came by after spending the day out and about. We were both starving and was craving for pizza so we decided to come by here. The place isn't very big. It has your typical diner seating. However, their bathrooms were surprisingly clean. Hubby and I chose a booth on the corner and we were immediately greeted. The service here is exceptional. I would come here again just for that. Hubby and I had a large Athens Pizza to share and it had more than enough cheese, which we both love. Their pizza was decent. They have slim choices for beer and they come in bottles. They do give you a really chilled mug to pour the beer into, which is a positive. If I wanted a very casual place to sit down and have a pizza, I would definitely be back. Wow the customer customer experience was amazing the gentleman in the back popped his head out and HELLO and the waitress answered all of my questions and. Finally opened after the complex caught on fire, which was far too long. It's been nicely restored. I've turned on quite a few friends to this spot. We've been meaning to try this place and last night we finally did. Being new to the area, we were looking for a good pie. We landed on the spartan which was the best of both worlds for us with the veggies and feta! The crust was great and reminds of an east coast pizza joint, crisp and smedium thickness. The toppings were fresh and the perfect amount of sauce to top it all off. I called it in and it was ready and waiting when I arrived. We also got some spanakopita which was great! The tzatziki however wasn't great, it seemed flavourless and too thin. Walking in the place was your typical pizza place nothing fancy but it was a really great go to and close for us. Restaurant was empty with no customers on a Saturday in the middle of the day. Only two other people and myself. Food was tasteless with no flavor and not season well, nor did it have a taste fresh. Had a old steal taste. The bread was hard and overcooked, the lasagna was terrible with no seasoning, no flavor just cheese on top and noodles. Ok- I read some of the other reviews, and was surprised at the low star ones. My husband and I have been coming here for about 10 years and can honestly say I haven't had a "low star" dining experience - not ever. My husband loves the canadian bacon with pepperoni grinder, lightly toasted, or the village special with canadian bacon. I mix it up between greek salad with garlic bread, lasagne with meat sauce (the combo meal with ribs) or the veggie pizza. (Yes, it is just as good or better the next day!) I do have to admit I loved the original noodles in the lasagne years ago, not sure why they changed them, but I still eat it. Our wait person was very friendly and she made sure we had whatever we needed. The family that bought the restaurant quite a few years ago have done a great job filling our bellies!! read more

Absolutely horrible. They have consistently gone down hill, tonight is my last dollar spent. I ordered a vegetarian with sausage, it's completely inedible. The sausage had the strangest texture, they did not add the veggies listed on the menu, they basically gave me a sausage pizza with a tomato on top. I try hard to support a local business, but when you raise your prices at the very least put out a edible product. This was made by someone who could care less. read more
