Our server, coincidentally with the name "Joy", was fantastic, and she did her name proud. The Athenian is one of those garguantuan sized diners that could easily make you think you were sitting in a booth on Long Island or in New Jersey. I was there Thursday for a business lunch and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The Athenian's parking lot is big so parking isn't a problem. The problem you'll have is navigating their enormous menu to decide what to eat. The lunch menu had 11 burgers (really 22 if you considered their 'deluxe' options), 10 Triple Decker Sandwiches, 8 cold salad platters, 6 diet plates, 10 tortilla wraps, 28 sandwiches, 3 Greek specialties, 5 Grinders, and 9 salads. So are you hungry yet? I went with a small Chefs Salad ($14.99) with eight big julienned pinwheels of turkey, roast beef, ham, swiss & america cheese piled on top of sliced tomatoes, hard boiled egg & cucumbers on a bed of mixed greens. The $14.99 serving was massive and I took home about 2/3rds of it. Growing up near New Jersehy and Long Island, I'm a big fan of these big diners that serve a big variety of cuisines and food styles. Classic diner. The menu is vast, the staff was quick and friendly. I got a view of the delicious looking desserts but I didn't have any room to enjoy them. Service was pretty quick, little less than half the tables were sat. I ordered the monte cristo, Amy got the Moussaka, it was really good, I would order that next time! The Monte cristo had fresh ingredients and tasted good but I didn't expect it to be open face and made eating it a little difficult. Not a bad stop on the way out of the city. "Shiny Diner" in Milford is so good. I had to write in cuz I recently ordered a tuna melt to go that was perfect. I could only eat half because I ordered potato salad instead of fries which was great too. Note, if you have leftover melt, Preheated my airfryer to 300 for 5 mins. Added leftover sandwich and cooked 4 mins a side and it was still incredible. A new favorite. Chicken rice soup is always divine. If you go for dinner, their sole francaise is amazing. (Just taste, often needs a bit of salt). And their carrot cake homemade by a gentleman there who's been making it for years is also incredibly moist. Yum. And the young gentleman/server often at desk is so nice if your friendly to him and the Muslim server with the hijab (I hate that I don't remember her name) is my favorite server--love her. This has always been my diner of choice when meeting with friends. Too bad I have to find a new place. I met with a friend who i just reconnected with for breakfast. We ordered, ate, then sat and talked. I have to say, I have never been kicked out of a diner in my life....no matter how long we stayed! After an hour and a half the woman who was working the front register continually stared us down from afar, which made us a bit uncomfortable. Then she walked by our table several times as she looked straight at us. Finally she told us it was lunch time and walked away. It was barely 11:30 am. She came back a few minutes later and said it again and pointed to the tables and booths. The diner was more than half empty. Every table near us was unoccupied. We went to the register to pay and I told her that she was rude and that neither of us had ever been forced out of a diner before. I looked over at all the empty tables and she told said "don't look over there...it's lunchtime!" I've been to many diners in my time and never ever was forced out after 1 1/2. Needless to say, neither of us will ever go back. IHOP is the place to go! Also, if in the Bethel area, try Stony Hill Diner on Stony Hill Rd. It's the best of the best! My boyfriend and I have been having shiny diner dinner dates for a few weeks now. We've been going during the week when it's quiet. Service has been great each time we've gone. I used to call this place the "silver diner" growing up because it is basically an all mirror building right off of 95 on the Boston post road. Service is always friendly and quick. There food is traditional diner options. I would rate the quality of the food as decent and the portions are to be as expected. Pricing is very fair and there is lots of parking. Pleasantly surprised. Went for dinner on Thursday night. The chicken orzo soup was pretty okay. The wings we enjoyed. Hubby had the chicken scarpariello and it looked and tasted really good. I ordered the Philly cheese steak triple decker which was very tasty. Couldn't finish it so hubby finished it later on he found it was really good. Decided to go back last night. Athenian Diner III is exactly what I was looking for on a cold rainy night in Milford, CT. I was traveling through for work and wanted something comforting. The staff was so friendly and attentive. They put on a fresh pot of decaf for me and I ordered a gyro plate which came with fries and a side of soup (chicken noodle for me). No frills, but that's not what you come to diners for; you come for the friendly service, the big menu, and the flavors. It was SO so so so so good. SO GOOD! I would absolutely come here again and order breakfast for dinner (one of my favorites). I saw an omelet get delivered to a nearby table and it looked heavenly. We had terrible service never saw our waiter but once or twice. They are understaffed and have gone down hill. My meal which was a simple chicken dish arrived 25 mins after my friends. I have not seam some of the negatives I find in other diners such as bland taste (not here), over priced (not here) or really awful service (not here.) I went with friends after catching a late night movie. I honestly wish we would have gone to Wendys instead...or ::gasps:: McDonald's. Quick fact: I never eat at either. Our server was sweet but that didn't make me any less irritated when she forgot the plates we asked for twice & our order of mozzarella sticks. In her defense she was a new hire on day 2 but if you're forgetting an order and there's no one else in the building I fear for her experience when the place gets busy. My spidey sense tells me this likely will not happen. Our potato skins were hard as rocks. I couldn't finish the one I grabbed. Even the bacon was unbearable and bacon makes everything better. The jalapeno poppers were the most bland I've ever had, don't do it to yourself. You have been warned. We did enjoy the mozzarella sticks and our chili fries but they were both average at best, nothing stellar. Perhaps their strong suit is breakfast or souvlaki. Personally I will not be giving this place anymore of my money. There are way too many amazing diners that get it right to eat here again.
