I have been to Athena twice for my brows 10 years apart and I have been extremely happy both times. The first time she fixed my blue black pencil thinned brows into something thicker and more natural colored (dark brown). It took a few sessions, but she patiently corrected the blue black ink into a dark brown and added a more flattering thicker brow. This time she turned my microbladed thicker brows that I had done by a master in Hong Kong into the perfect permanent fixtures on my face. I just finished my last touch up today and I cannot be happier with the results. While Athena is on the pricier end of the spectrum, you get what you paid for. I have met with many other brow artists and they all lack the vision to be able to do what Athena was able to do with mine. Most of them told me to have them laser removed so they can start over. However, Athena was able to take what was already done and fix it to be more natural. You get what you pay for, so why would you cheap out on your face permanently? Your brows frame your face, make good choices. You can't go wrong with Athena. read more

I'm honestly not sure how this place ended up with such great reviews. I called today to inquire about getting a tattoo, and after pronouncing the first couple of words with my Eastern European accent, I got a very confused "Huh?" followed by an immediate hang-up. I assumed it was an accident, so I called back. Same thing. Tried again. Same result. Apparently, my accent was enough to disqualify me from receiving tattoo information. No worries -- I think I've written enough. If answering a potential customer's phone call is too much of an inconvenience, I can only imagine what the customer service is like once they actually have your money. Impressive first impression. read more

Athena is an angel. I had an accident several years ago while hiking. I lost 30% of my lower lip. Ibwas not abke to get to a hospital before it scabbed over slightly and had to wait 2 months for the wound to heal. I had to have reconstructive surgery to fix the dimpled in texture, discoloration and unevenness. Years later while it was a massive improvement it still bothered me. My lower lip was very thin and uneven on the vermilion border. It dimpled in when I made a kissy face and pulled towards the scar when I smiled. I went to Athena because I did a lot of research and did not want to mess around with my face. Athena took her time in showing me the different ways to redefine the lip line. I have had several sessions in the past year. She always takes her time to make sure you are comfortable and checks in with you via text the night after your procedure. She is a sweet caring and beautifully compassionate woman. My lips always healed quickly afterwards and look phenominal. I am able to apply lipstick in 30 seconds instead of the 15 it took before to make myself look even. I feel confident with my lips. Alot of the pulling and dimpling from the scar tissue is gone. When I smile my lips are even. No one but my best friends know I have had anything done. My lips look naturally full and beautiful. I also got my eye brows done and it has been amazing rolling out of bed with nothing but a swipe of mascara and being ready to go. I highly recommend her. She cares deeply about her clients and that you are happy with her work. read more

This review is for cosmetic tattooing I received at Athena's San Francisco office Athena informed me at the consultation that she charges a fee upfront for services that can be used for the following year. The downside of such a contract was that that Athena was very difficult to get a hold of after the first appointment. iShe often doesn't respond to texts or messages left for her.The color does not last very long after the first session.Additionally, my experience was that Athena consistently had several clients at the same time as well as accepted phone calls while working on clients which created a chaotic and stressful environment. My experience also was that once the skin was broken even with a tattoo needle, scar tissue was created which does not retain pigment.I spent a large amount of money on a procedure which resulted in little satisfaction. read more

After trying to pencil in the "perfect " eyebrow for years and years, I woke up one morning and decided I didn't want to go into old age (like my mother) with no eyebrows because I couldn't see to draw them on anymore! Thanks, Yelp, because all of you led me straight to Athena to do the very first cosmetic tattooing procedure I've ever done in my life. Athena was a pleasure to consult with. She has an expert eye and really cares about her clients. She *wants* you to look your best and is genuinely happy and proud that her artistry contributes to the natural beauty of her clientele. At any rate, Athena told me that the reason I was having a difficult time drawing in my arches evenly was because my eyebrow bone structure are differently shaped; this contributed to over-plucking eyebrow hairs that, over time, just wouldn't grow back in. Just so you know: Perfectly tattooed brows don't occur in just one sitting, so don't let any person or professional tell you differently! In my first visit Athena said that I'd come back probably three times in order for us to sculpture my perfect eyebrows using the right colour palette and shaping (FYI that all touch-ups and work of this nature is FREE in the first year). I just came back after visit #2 and my eyebrows are nothing less than STUNNING. Athena is passionate about making sure you look top notch and are satisfied with her services. She'll remember if you don't come back or keep in touch. Athena cares about her clients and wants you to call her if you have questions/problems/etc. She will call you to follow up, too! All I can say is, pay the price to have Athena work her magic on you the FIRST time, rather than have it done elsewhere and have to pay more for her to correct a botched job. Athena, thank you so much for correcting a lifelong problem that I have forever been self conscious about ! I feel-and look-beautiful!!! read more

I came to Athena to treat some scars that I had from a childhood accident. I had tried everything - lasers, micropen, makeup - nothing worked. Nothing was truly effective. I found Aethna through a Google search. She is the most amazing cosmetic, corrective and paramedical tattoo specialist on the planet. My scars are now unnoticeable. Athena isn't cheap, but she is worth every penny. Over time, I've spent thousands more on treatments that didn't work. If it's a scar you are concerned about, don't waste your time shopping around. Athena is the best. Additionally, she is a kind, warm, empathetic person - she will never let you feel embarrassed or insecure. I can't speak to her cosmetic tattoo but from what I have seen in her office, the results are equally as impressive. I highly recommend Athena. read more

Athena is excellent at her craft. I really appreciate her approach of building toward the desired result until you are satisfied. She also has years of experience and will give you her honest opinion to make sure your decision is well informed. She is expensive but worth it. Athena is extremely knowledgeable, including with respect to working on people with darker skin tones. I also find that she goes out of her way to help even where she can't provide a fix. I had some unfortunate brow work done, and Athena was able to give me a solid plan forward and sent me off with lip pencils to temporarily conceal them. That is, even when she wasn't going to be tattooing (and charging) and fix for me. Definitely someone who knows what they're doing, is honest about it, and takes pride in their work read more

Athena is a true professional. As a bartender in San Francisco she assured me that I"d notice a difference in my tips. I"ve only had my first session and not even my follow up sessions yet and already I've calculated a 12% increase. Wow!! not bad. can't wait to see how much my tips improve after my follow up. Athena is a true artist and will make you look naturally better. I was initially hesitant about doing the permanent procedure on my lips but it was soooo worth - Athena listens and makes helpful suggestions - in the end, the results exceeded my expectations (both the shape and color - I now often forget to put lipstick or lipliner). Among other advantages - first consultation is free (warning - you will likely decide to do the procedure right away once she does a drawing :)) + there is no limit on how many times you can do touch-ups / corrections (in the unlikely event one would need them) during the first 12 months following the procedure. She is also very personal and the atmosphere in the salon is friendly and cordial. Look no further - I've done research on a few other specialists in the field in SF and Athena is the absolute best, highly recommend! read more

I was referred to Athena by one of the top cosmetic dermatologists in San Francisco because years ago I was left with faded and unsuitable tattooed brows. My dermatologist was spot on... Athena is the only one that should ever near our precious faces with tattoo equipment. Her work is top class and she is an also an amazing artist. Not only does Athena make her clients feel comfortable and at ease, she will take as much time as one needs until the outcome is exactly perfect. You will leave feeling beautiful and looking like you have *natural* brows - this is coming from someone with so little hair and with a very discriminating eye! Athena's work is phenomenal, she is a wonderful person and has a book of business that is self referring - don't let her end up correcting your work, get it done the right way, the best way the first time! read more

I started using Athena's facial line recently. I have switched on and off from high end brand names to drug store products and have never found anything that made my skin look and feel the way this line does. Currently I use the milky cleaner, cucumber toner, moisturizer and exfoliant. I have never been happier and my skin has cleared up tremendously, feels smooth, no bumps, hydrated and flawless. The products don't feel harsh but clean to perfection. Her line is very reasonably priced and both Athena and Jeff were a pleasure to work with. read more

On the first visit she pencil drew my eyebrows over the tattooing that was there. It looked great. I was shocked at the $3,000 price, but assumed she would be the best. Her personality is delightful, but she almost never got the messages from her scheduler that I was coming, and though she focused on an area that needed an angle correction, which she partially corrected. in several sessions she never came back to what she drew day one that I paid 3K for. My last visit I was there 2 hours before she started with me at all. in the end I was frustrated and disappointed, and unable to look in a mirror because the angle was still so odd, and they were drawn so thin. Today I had my eyebrows microbladed and for $550 my eyebrows look fantastic, as I was hoping Athena would do. read more

Like a plastic surgeon with ink! And amazing at scar camouflage. One time when I went and saw her, there was a gentleman sitting in the chair and she was covering up a surgical scar on the top of his head. I was so impressed. When I saw her skill, my fears about getting my eyelids tattooed were assuaged. Expert work. It's got the most amazing view of the city, which definitely helped me relax as I had my eyebrows done. I absolutely had to go back to get my eyes done, since her doing my eyebrows was so great it saved me time, which saved me money, and also saved me sleep. She gave great advice, and she wouldn't let me do something that she knew would turn out awful. Athena is a beautiful woman that can get along with everybody. I spend no less than 10 minutes per day filling in my eyebrows. Add that up and that's over 60 hours. I knew the insanity had to stop. Not to mention I have a toddler who gives me approximately 5 minutes to get my makeup on in the morning, so efficiency is key. At my last appointment with Dr. Ellis at Gentle Spa (see my separate review of GS, it's the shit) I told him about my eyebrow plight. Dr. Ellis mentioned that some of his other patients had gotten their brows tattooed by Athena (I think the professional term is "permanent makeup"). I trust Dr. Ellis, but I still wanted to check out Athena's reviews. So, I "yelped" her and was thrilled that all of the reviews were amazingly positive. I was, admittedly, a little apprehensive about getting my brows tattooed because I know some people say it hurts really bad and not all my friends who have done this procedure have been satisfied. But, I have 3 tattoos so I figured I could deal with the eyebrows and didn't think that all of Athena's enthusiastically positive feedback could be off. I called Athena on a Monday and she answered her phone immediately. She booked me for that Friday (this past week) at noon! I seriously had no idea what to expect when I ventured into the city for my appointment. First of all, Athena is on the 24th floor of her building with views of North Beach and the Golden Gate Bridge. The lighting in her place is amazingly perfect. Athena was super warm and made me comfy in her stainless steel tattoo shop meets barneys with some lounge-y music playing in the background type of office. Athena talked to me about what I wanted - color, thickness, height of arch, length of brow, etc. She was very thorough and took a lot of pictures each time she outlined my brow as a guide for the ink. Once we settled on the perfect brow she went to work. Athena applies a topical anesthesia so you're fairly numb during the procedure. I was a little worried it would feel just like a tattoo, but it wasn't bad at all. A couple of the brush strokes made me wince a little, but nothing bad. Athena had me check out her progress and involved me in the process. Once she was done and handed me the mirror I almost started crying because she made my brows more symmetrical and the arch was perfect. Seriously, they look freaking great. Athena charges a flat rate for her services and you can get touch-ups as much as you like for a year. I didn't even bother to ask how much it was because I knew she was the best. You'll definitely spend more than other places, but Athena really is an artist and it's your FACE! My brows are healing perfectly and although I don't think Athena will have to tweak anything, she's still called me 2 times already to check on my progress. This morning it took me 90 seconds to do my makeup. 90 SECONDS! My face and my toddler are both indebted to Athena forever! read more

Athena is more than an artist - and when it comes to her work she is completely knowledgeable about all the latest medical cosmetic enhancement procedures available for men and women. She guarantees her work and consistently strives for perfection. She has done my lips and eyeliner and no one can ever tell that I have permanent makeup. Athena always provides helpful aftercare products and instructions. Most important, she uses topical anesthetic creams that make the experience painless...and believe me...when you are getting your eyeliner tattooed--which is extremely unnerving process--Athena says and does the exact right thing to make you feel comfortable!! She has a good heart and really cares. You will pay more for her services, but you GET more. read more

A little bonus - the ambiance of her office is chic and glamorous with amazing views. She's so calm and such a pleasure to talk to as well. I never thought I would look forward to getting permanent makeup and enjoy the experience. Thank you Athena!!! read more

The Best Around... Honest, Caring, Genuine and I know that there is No One Better that cares as much as Athena Karsant

I have been drawing my eyebrows on since I was 14 and I'm now 31!!!!! One day I decided to do the math and see how much time I would spend doing my eyebrows in my lifetime....well the answer was more than 7 months!!!! Sometimes it would take 10 minutes and other times it would take hours!!!! So I finally decided that it was time to get my eyebrows tattooed on. I am a perfectionist and I knew that the person that would tattoo my eyebrows on was going to have to be BEYOND EXCELLENT!!! I have visited SEVERAL website, looked at SEVERAL pictures and spoke and met with many tattoo artists. I decided that it was time to do another web search yesterday and I came across Athena's website and I was IMPRESSED and AMAZED!!!! With each before and after set of pictures I was more and more impressed!!! I IMMEDIATELY called her and scheduled an appointment. I was extremely excited to meet Athena and see her work in person. I could tell over the phone in just 10 minute that not only did she have a vast knowledge on permanent make-up; she really cared about her clients and Athena and wants them to be completely satisfied when they walk out her door. My first appointment with Athena was exceeded the already Fa I called her back and asked her if I could get my eyebrows tattooed on that day. She said yes and I was thrilled!!! When I came into her salon she had a women in her chair as she was finishing her eyebrows, her work was impeccable!!! It was even better in person that it was in her picture!!!! I looked at the women's eyebrows and you COULD NOT tell that they were tattooed on!!! They looked so real even when I looked at the women's brows up close!! Not only were her eyebrows matched her skin tone and hair color perfectly!!!! I was SOLD!!!!! She used a technique that somehow makes the eyebrows tattoo look like individual hairs!!! Athena makes it look like an actual eyebrow (made of hair) as opposed to a penciled in eyebrow!!! I didn't even need to see pics I wanted my eyebrows tattooed on that day!!! I told Athena I want to get my eyebrows done then; we signed some paperwork and worked with me for at least an hour to find the perfect shape. Athena was incredibly patient; she drew two different eyebrows than we tweaked it for an hour until we found the perfect shape for my face. After we picked the shape she told me that it took 2-5 sessions to actual perfect the eyebrow but I would only be paying a onetime fee which I thought was great!!!! Especially since all the other salons that I spoke with told me that I would have to have several sessions but I would have to pay for each session as opposed to Athena who only charges you once which covers any kind of tweaks or touch ups for a year!!! She then told me that she would begin the process of tattooing the eyebrow....well she spent several hours on my eyebrows and they turned out BETTER than I accepted!!!!! She said that she would still need to touch up my eyebrows a few more times but let me tell you I got them done yesterday then I went out today and did not have to pencil in my brows at all!!! I got SEVERAL complements and it was only day 1!!!!!! I CANNOT stop going on and on about how thrilled I am with Athena personally, her professionalism, her extraordinary artistic talent (and believe me she is an ARTIST in the truest since of the word), her attention to detail and my overall experience!!! I WILL SAY IT AGAIN IF YOU WANT TO GET YOUR EYEBROWS TATTOO'ED ON, YOU WANT THEM TO LOOK REAL AND YOU WANT THE VERY BEST GO TO ATHENA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!! SHE IS TRULY AN ARTIST!!!!!!! read more

This gracious, successful woman is the best of the best. I was referred by another SF quality driven business - Spa Radiance. Firmly believe that word of mouth from the best will get you the best and this experience stayed true. I've had sparse eyebrows all my life, always opting to draw them in daily but not achieving the glamorous look of full brows. A life change prompted me to get my eyebrows done. The permanent aspect though had me cautious. Athena's artistry and ability to match color to skin, texture, etc is the detail I had hoped for. My new eyebrows look completely natural and enhance my eyes. My girlfriends say my fuller eyebrows completely change my look in the most positive way. Thank you, Athena. You are truly at the top of the mark. read more

Thanks to Athena's artistic eye, experience and ultimate knowledge I can look in the mirror without cringing. After several breast surgeries that were done through my areola, I had scarring that left my areola looking rather odd and not attractive. I refused to settle to wear pasties to cover when in my bikini. My initial consult was comfortable and I knew at that moment I had made the right choice. The color matching is spot on and no one would know unless you told them. Will you feel it? Yes and No. Athena will make sure that the area or any area you are having work on is numb so that you are comfortable. I am thinking maybe my lips or brows for my next visits. read more

Athena is just amazing. I had only half of my my eyebrows from excessive plucking as a teenager and every day had to draw in my eyebrows, invariably after a few hours they were gone. Athena gave me beautiful, perfect and natural eyebrows by drawing in one hair at a time with a single needle. She is a true artist with a great sense of color and what is flattering to your face. She is expensive but when it comes to PERMANENT makeup that is on your face - it's so worth it. Thanks Athena for making me look so great. read more

My Daughter (now a teen) developed a Strawberry Hemangioma on the top her right eye when she was an infant. By the time she was 12 she had undergone few surgeries (ptosis, laser) and had gotten past worst of that condition. However her right eyebrow needed additional work in order for her to look normal. We were looking for a non surgical option at this point and we consulted Athena a year ago. We are so glad we found Athena because in this one year, in few sittings, she did wonders with bringing back near normal looks to my daughter. Athena is not just an expert in what she does, she is an artist and a very committed, a very good hearted lady. read more

So far it has been great. I had my brows tattooed two days ago, and they look beautiful. There is no swelling or peeling, the color is a mix of two browns and complements my skin tone nicely. I am dark blond and have always struggled to find the right color, not too cold, not too warm. That wasn't a problem for Athena, she knew exactly what i needed. by the way, she has great light in her office on the 24th floor. I had consultation with somebody else in SF, in a dark windowless place. I mean, isn't good light a requirement for this kind of work? One more thing - I wasn't very easy to work with. Very picky about the shape, I wanted to try every possible variation. Athena patiently outlined my brows with pencil and made helpful comments until I made my choice. Athena charges more than in some other locations, but for the price she offers a year of unlimited touch ups, and i definitely see value in this approach. It takes some time of living with new brows to see if slight changes of shape or tone are wanted. It's all personal preference and I am glad that there is no rush to make this decision. read more

Athena "needled" some scars for me (to make them disappear) and did permanent makeup on my lips and eyebrows. I have had an amazing experience with Athena. I have had several chicken pox scars on my face since i was a child. They have always bothered me but no dr offered a solution that did not have the potential of making things worse. At last (decades later) my dermatologist suggested i see Athena and ask her opinion. After seeing my scars Athena told me to give her a year- I was nervous but began to visit her roughly every 10 weeks and she would 'needle' them to encourage new skin growth. I can most happily report, 9 months later, that my scars are practically gone. It is incredible- and i am delighted! I highly recommend Athena- with warmth and honesty she has guided me to just the result I was hoping for. read more

Athena is a gem. Aside from her true artistry and talent, Athena's intuitiveness with clients and their specific concerns and needs is fantastic. I love Athena. I went with her for eyebrows because I had seen her exceptional reviews. At first I did not really understand that this was not the same as microblading, and I expected my whole eyebrows to be done in one visit. I enjoyed being in her office but left the first time annoyed with what I felt like was not very much done when I had been dreaming of never penciling in my eyebrows again. By my second visit I understood that it is a process, and that I was lucky that she didn't do them all in one shot. It was worth it to take the time to get what I really wanted. I just had my third visit with Athena today and I really love the results. Her work really blends in with my natural eyebrows and I get a lot of compliments on them. Her office is a nice place to chat with her and other guests who come in. I am considering getting my lips and eyeliner done down the road as well. Thank you Athena! read more

I am an accomplished permanent makeup artist. Before I entered the world of Permanent Makeup I wanted to meet the best artists in the field so I would set a high standard for myself. I observed Athena doing a "full lip" procedure. I was so impressed with her work that I have strived for the past 11 years to produce work like hers. Very recently I had the opportunity of consulting with her and once again I found her warm and welcoming. Turns out that she did know the answer that I had been looking for. I needed to hear it from someone who could articulate it. My extensive training and experience told me that she was right. After my lesson with Athena I connected the link. The light came on. She reminded me that this is not science. It is an art and a process to produce a lovely final look. As artists we deal with complicated and changing things that we adapt to and work around. Only then can our work be beautiful and lasting. I am so grateful to Athena because she has been a huge part of the progress that I have made in making women pretty and helping men with skin issues. She does excellent work, is true to her word and most generous with her time & knowledge. She did set the standard for me 11 years ago. I have always believed if you want the best, you hire the best. Athena deserves every 5 star rating that she gets. As for a fellow artist and colleague, I am glad that I know her. We all use Yelp as a tool when contemplating dinners, doctors , & services. For this reason I am writing my 3rd ever review today & it's for Athena! She is not a personal friend, for the record, but I trust her like one. Was referred to her through a friend & from the onset was aware that I had chosen 'the best' . Let's face it, (no pun intended), when having tattooing done to ones FACE, there is no room for error. From the moment you meet her at her office you know you are in good hands. She is confident , knowledgable, relatable, timely, & friendly. It is a sterile environment from a health perspective, but not from a personal one. It's obvious you are in the company of not only an experienced professional, but that of a born artist. Her experience comes from real life not just the classroom. Well it's obvious I can't say enough good things about Athena and I have for the first time in my life , beautiful, shapely, natural looking eyebrows! And best of all, she placed them slightly higher than where my paltry set existed, so I I look refreshed & YOUNGER! I will recommend Athena highly. read more

Do not go to anyone but Athena! I made that mistake and had to have major corrective work done by her. Yes, she costs more than other technicians but she's in a league of her own, she's worth it, and it will save you the agony I had to go through. Spend the money on Athena, get it done right the first time, or don't bother! I'd like to add that Athena is not only a truly talented artist, she's a wonderful, fun, big-hearted human being, and she made what was initially a hellish experience a healing one on every level. My correction is all done now and I look and feel great ---but I miss seeing her!! read more

Athena's work is masterful. I was referred to her by my sister who insisted I should only go with the best if I was considering permanent make-up. When I went for the consultation, I was focusing on eyebrows and perhaps eyeliner. Athena suggested I might consider also doing my lips and I was so glad I did. Athena worked patiently on all 3 areas, showing me sketches, color combinations, and asking my input. After awhile, I decided to just let go and trust...and the result was amazing. Athena's talent as an artist and practitioner made me look fresh, younger but without the look of having been "done." I was very nervous about having the result look natural and Athena delivered. I have been back for several touch-ups (included in the flat price) - e.g., I was braver to go with a slightly thicker eye liner and slightly fuller lips. Athena is an accomplished cosmetic tattoo artist; she has the most wonderful eye for line and color and I trust her judgment implicitly. Her office is professional but also cozy and welcoming. Her services are not inexpensive, but she is a perfectionist and will persist until she gets the desired result. In my case, the eyeliner color I picked didn't "take" initially; after several tries Athena suggested a different color and the result was beautiful. Even my teenaged daughter approves! Athena has a busy practice, but she is always easy to get in touch with to schedule appointments. Although she can be working on up to three clients at a time, she is an amazing multi-tasker. She is also very patient and thorough when it comes to addressing her clients' concerns and questions. I recommend her services highly, you won't be disappointed! read more

BIG BIG mistake to have ever gone to Athena! Very expensive and the ink is not good. I never got the results I was looking for, she never got the color I was going for & I feel she has too much going on & you do not have her full attention. She is rude and does not do a good job at listening and considering this is a TATTOO and is PERMANENT. You would think she would be more caring, I mean call me crazy but most of us do care about our appearance.. She is always on her cell phone even if you are trying to tell her something she will interrupt you and start another conversation or answer her cell phone.. Just inconsiderate and bad service if you ask me! read more
