It's a nice speak easy feel and vibe in here. As you enter in the bar is to your right, it has an old school nyc feel to it. the showtime area is located through a small hallway towards the back.it is larger than you would think. It's set up like a theatre, which is nice. No heads to block you. It's roomy in there but yet still intimate while viewing the comedians. I had a good time. The bathroom was spacious and clean. I appreciated that.

Jamie W. and I came here to see "Titanique" plain and simple because we saw an entertaining snippet of it on TV. This Chelsea venue has been around only since 2018, but it evokes the feeling of those mid-century cabaret basement nightclubs in Greenwich Village, the kind where Phyllis Diller or Rodney Dangerfield would headline and Barbra Streisand would show up on some random amateur night. It wasn't smoky like the old-time clubs because like, who does that anymore, but there were a couple of mini-bars where you could order cocktails. Chairs were set up on risers like a pep rally in a high school gym. We were in the front row where the stage was mere inches from our faces. Now regarding the show itself, it was a stitch. It was a musical parody of "Titanic" as reimagined by Celine Dion. Not the real Celine but a hilarious impersonation by actress Marla Mindelle who also co-wrote the piece which sends up the singer's self-absorption and provides an excuse for the cast of twelve to perform her most familiar hits. Happily, each cast member sang with booming clarity and comic zest, and the movie's plot was played for easy laughs down to the gigantic Heart of the Ocean diamond. And of course, Rose was carrying on her back the papier-mâché crate door that apparently couldn't accommodate Jack's frozen body as well as hers. I believe it's running through the middle of November, so hurry if you can, but regardless, I'd also be interested in coming back for their rotation of comedy shows if "Titanique" is an indication of the quality here. It was a fun spot. Near. Far. Wherever you are. RELATED - Looking for things to see and do in NYC? Here's a collection of things that I've experienced and reviewed: http://bit.ly/2ZvQA2F

This a venue that's completely underground, apparently the basement of an old Gristedes according to "Celine Dion" from the show Titanique! (If you loved Titanic, you'll get a kick out of this show!!) There are few different seating sections and booze is available for sale. We were seated in the middle section, directly looking at the stage. It was a good spot! During our show the actors were in the audience during various parts! For the show, we tried a Titanic themed mojito. (I don't recommend it.) Go for something safe, in a can. You could get a bucket with a lot of canned drinks. I think I overheard you could keep the bucket! There really isn't much ventilation, so if you're nervous about that, probably not the place for you. They recommend or enforce you wear your mask if you are not taking a sip of your drink. Ps. There are two stalls in the women's bathroom. Yep, you'll most likely wait in a line. They do comedy shows here too!

Rather small venue. Now that I think of it it reminds me of a dive bar that they transformed into a off broadway / comedy club venue. Came here to see TITANTIQUE. This parody show was amazing hands down. Basically it's a funny retelling of the story based on the movie of TITANTIC. It's the funny retelling told by Celine Dion . Although the venue was very tight, benches uncomfortable and the atmosphere on the clammy side . It's important to support these small local business

Asylum is great and true to it's name will have you laughing like crazy. I came here over the summer for a characters show and was amazed. Their check-in is right by the door which also hosts a rotating lineup of all their shows. Once you've shown your vaccination card and paid, you head down the stairs where drinks and the stage are situated. The bar offers a really nice variety of beer/wine/cocktails and a 4 for $20 beer bucket where you can mix and match. The theater is intimate and has 3 sides and allowing the audience to see the stage from different angles. If you sit in the front row center you're bound to feel a part of the performance. If you need a good laugh and some fun, then I highly recommend Asylum. Any day, any night, Asylum will treat you right.

Great way to laugh for $20...there were 3 troupes performing and it's original and very funny.

Soooo.. I went to see a show last night & paid for a VIP ticket. I loved Pauly Shore and encourage everyone to see his one man show . Alan was also great to work with and I will be back at a later date. Thanks for your help .

Have been to the main stage show here twice and I can't wait to come back! The overall vibe of the place is chill and waaay bigger than I thought it'd be. The bartender was super friendly and the cast was on POINT! A blend of sketch and improv that I can honestly say I've never seen before. Will make for a fun night no matter who you bring!

Ask the Community - Asylum NYC

    Is the theatre BYOB?

Hey John! We have a bar at the venue, so no BYOB! Thanks!

So my 13yo son is a HUGE comedy fan. His sense of humor is very well developed (political humor, etc) and I would love to take him to a comedy show when we are in NYC next weekend. How raunchy does the 8pm show get? Is there an age requirement?

Hi Beth! Thanks for your question. We are so glad your son is so into comedy. Seems like Improv…

Do they have coffee, drinks, and/or snacks for sale before the show starts?

Hi Kathleen! Thanks for your question. We currently have a full service bar open before, during, and after the show. Our friendly bartender Brian will have you feeling right…

The comics were non stop, about 8 of them on a Tuesday night for the 7pm show. We were lucky enough to experience the famous Brian Scott McFadden, absolutely hilarious! There's a two drink minimum. The server was not the friendliest, but got us our drinks. Shockingly she said they had no hot drinks that were listed on the menu, which is very suspicious as one of them is tea. So you're telling me you can't heat up hot water?...hmmm. The alcohol drinks are pricey, which is what they obviously want you to order. My wife and I had a blast…read more Everything about the evening show (starting around 9 pm?) was excellent, but there is one thing I want to point out the most -- the extraordinary effort the comedy show host and all the comedians made that night. We made a spontaneous decision to attend the show because we heard someone walking around saying "Comedy show!" I'm not even sure it was someone from Comedy Village as we didn't get a good look at him in the crowded street, but we were looking for something to do next as we were wandering around aimlessly after watching a Broadway play ("Art" if you haven't seen it, is a must-see.) A comedy show sounded like a great idea as that's one of our favorite things to do when we're vacationing in other towns. Comedians can easily do a great job on nights when everything is going well -- the crowd is big, there's high-energy in the audience, etc. But you really learn about comedians' commitment to their craft when, for example, it's a federal holiday, and it's an unusually quiet night by NY standards, and it's cold and bitter outside. We were part of a tiny crowd that night and wouldn't have blamed the performers for phoning it in. But they didn't. The host was outstanding, and his energy set the stage and the tone for the night. He and the other comedians willed the audience to a great show. I was way more impressed by them under those circumstances than I would have been at a packed house on a more pleasant evening. Job well done! On top of that, the food was surprisingly good. Food typically isn't much to write home about at a comedy club, but everything we ordered came out hot and delicious. As a bit of a chicken wing snob myself, I also give two buffalo-sauce-drenched thumbs up to the wings. Last but not least, the service was excellent, too. Service at most restaurants today is, well, not great. But the service here walked that perfect balance between checking on us enough to make sure we had what we needed without being annoying. We're going to start heading up to New York much more often, and we'll absolutely return to Comedy Village!

What a coincidence! 2 item minimum and phones are put in a puffy mailer bag that you have on you until the rest of the show. Their beef yakitori skewers were juicy and tender! My cucumber gin drink was refreshing and not too strong. Each comedian that went up did such a great job with various styles of humor and experiences to share. I wasn't expecting a drop in but Marcello Hernandez from SNL went up and did some new material. God.. I love good surprises. Usama closed out the night strong and I was incredibly pleased with the show. Not gonna lie.. it was kismet that I got to shake their hands after their sets since my table was by the exit door. Founded back in 1982 in a basement on MacDougal Street, and it's stayed almost exactly what it's always been: low ceilings, brick walls, candlelit tables packed close enough together that you're basically eavesdropping on the next table over whether you want to or not. Godfrey is a regular here, and he never fails to make me split my sides. He's been holding down rooms at this club for the better part of three decades at this point, and it shows every single time. Then there's the actual reason people fly in from out of town for this place: the surprise drop-ins. I got lucky and caught Kevin Hart doing a full 45-minute set for my friends visiting from out of town, completely unannounced. That's the magic of this room. Chappelle, Chris Rock, Seinfeld, half the biggest names in comedy have all quietly walked through that door to work out new material in front of a crowd that has no idea who's about to walk on stage next. Food and drinks are great, though pricey. Doesn't matter. You're paying for the room and the possibility of a night like that, and I'd happily pay triple just for the ticket alone with no food or drink involved. Only real knock: the door guys aren't especially friendly, and if you land on their bad side, they will kick you out, so tread carefully there. You also lock your phone away in a pouch the second you walk in, which sounds annoying and is actually the best part of the whole system, since it means the room is actually watching the show instead of filming it. Service moves fast and you barely notice them working around you. Just make sure you order everything you'll need up front, once the room gets going, they don't want anyone breaking the flow to flag down a waiter. A true New York institution, and worth every dollar.

The tickets were easy to purchase from online, and I was even able to get a discount code for five dollars off. I came early to check out the place, and found that it looks like they had some improv happening on the stage located on the main floor. They have two stage rooms, one upstairs on the main level and the other downstairs. After looking at the one downstairs I would have personally liked to been seated there because upstairs was hot as the dog days of summer in NYC. The bathrooms were also located down there. The main level just felt a little uncomfortable because of how the chairs and tables were sat up. There was a two drinks minimum you had to purchase and they had appetizers available to support those drinks. I just ordered some fries and a mudslide. The fries were ok, and my drink was really good. My coworkers ordered some mozzarella bites, chicken wings etc. I sampled the mozzarella bites and they were really good, better than my fries. Customer service was good and the food and drinks came out pretty fast. Now as far as the show goes, the comedians they had, they were all pretty funny and so I did laugh enough. My coworker was pretty good too. Now the question is would I return? I would only want to return to this place if the show is downstairs. Of course, Tony didn't tell us there'd be a 2 drink minimum, but that would have been ok if the comedians he had told us were there were actually there. They weren't. These were totally unknown comedians and we were going to need to spend another $20+ each to stay to watch some comedians that were obviously signed on to work in this sketchy theater. Even our 12 year old would need to buy a drink! To add to the bad experience, the place looked like trash and was basically in the basement with metal folding chairs. We left, went to look for Tony who had apparently vanished faster than the comedians he promised us. If Tony put half as much effort into honesty as he does into his sales pitch, he'd probably have an actual career. Dear Broadway Comedy Club: Don't bother following up to this message telling people that "Tony" was an independent contractor and it's not the theaters fault.
