We were looking for something different to have for dinner besides what was available in our area. After looking for restaurants on Yelp we found this authentic Peruvian restaurant. From the outside it doesn't look like much but when you walk in you feel like you 've walked into a restaurant in Peru. You can tell where the authentic food is by observing who eats there. Juan attended to us immediately and we ordered the Chicha Morada, A popular drink made from Peruvian purple corn and pineapple. Very delicious and highly recommended! I ordered the ceviche seafood mixta and my wife ordered the Whole Fish with fried yucca. We shared our plates and everything was more than delicious. We have experienced Peruvian food at another popular Peruvian restaurant is not which does not compare to the food offered here. We will definitely be returning to sample some of the many authentic dishes offered on their menu. I highly recommend this modest restaurant to anyone looking for a delicious dinner! read more

Absolutely love this place! After Covid it's been hard to find a good all you can eat sushi place. I'm not sure how long this one's been open for but the staff is amazing and super accommodating with anything that you ask for. The only reason why I would not give this five stars is because they don't do any desserts with the all you can eat. I love ending my meal with some green tea ice cream, so that was a bummer that I couldn't get it at the end. If you're a true foodie, willing to try something different, you've got to try Asu Mare in Freehold. Doesn't look like much on the outside & inside is plain, but the food is outstanding. On a first visit, three of us (all guys) split a Ruleta Marina, which is a large platter of 6 or 8 dishes including Cerviche. Terrific introduction to the Peruvian style of cooking. Everything absolutely delicious & so much that we didn't order other entrees....finished off with Mil Hojas cakes, Chocoflan & excellent Peruvian cafe. A week later, my wife (who is an adventurous foodie) & I visited. She had the Pollo Salteado & I had the Chupe de Cameron which is a huge bowl chock full of shrimp, cheese, rise & a poached egg.....again, absolutely delicious. Acceptable portions but food lacks flavor. First off, my extended family came for at least two Pollo de la brasa's. It was only 6:30 and they only had one(!) chicken left. How could they only have one chicken in the middle of the day I will never know. I ordered the chicken with salad, french fries, arroz chaufa with chicken, and ceviche. Chicken was bland without the iconic tasty skin you expect, the salad you could put water on it and I would never knew there was dressing on it, and the cevice was pretty bland too. You walk in and the dining area is to the right, waiting area is to the left. Fiancé ordered the churrasco to go and I ordered the chaufa mixto. First of all, the portions are huge!! I am so happy this little gem opened up so close to home!! My family and my extended family ate Peruvian food all the time in CA and obviously we had our fav restaurant. So, after moving to Jersey, Peruvian cooking is truly a food that I missed, when Asu Mare opened I couldn't wait to have dinner here. Back in November hubby and I decided to give it a try, first off know ALL portions are huge to share with minimum 2 people. Appetizers fish Ceviche, Pappa Rellena - Delicious. the fish was so flavorful and tang from the lime juice really just hit the spot. The Pappa Rellena, as a whole- was a solid and heavy item, but the potato was light and fluffy, it was the beef filling crammed into it that was so tasty and added the weight. I have to say the green chili sauce given with corn chips, tasted just as I remember it from CA, so I am super happy about that. But I don't personally like it with chips, much rather eat it the way I have always had it, with small warm soft dinner rolls with butter slathered on them first, I know.. but don't knock it till ya tried it. Moving forward I ordered the beef steak with french fries and salad HUGE serving, steak was seasoned perfectly, fries were crispy and not oily. I took over half the order home to our son who devoured it and exclaimed he needed to take his GF there, she'd love it!! Hubby had the chicken cutlet again- huge portions, juicy and extremely light batter and seasoned perfectly it came with rice and salad, hubby prefers plain rice but he liked this version and was pleased there was enough to take home with the portion of chicken he didn't finish. Dessert we took home because we were stuffed but pleasantly not the OMG I'm going to pop feeling. SO the bread pudding was nice to share later that night because we had such an early dinner. Don't forget the Inka Cola, its a bit like Cactus Cooler but without the orange flavor. It is not a huge place so get there early after 6:30p it gets packed, and service can get a bit slow, but they cook everything fresh and you can't rush certain dishes. Come when you have time and can enjoy a new experience, come and share a few appetizers, bring friends or family and put the cell phones down and have a great meal! We noticed that they do a hefty take out service and that was nice to see, they also have specials daily and serve breakfast certain days, so that is on my list to try. But seafood is something I really enjoy so we will be back to try the many seafood dishes they create. read more

I'm not big on trying new things but I think I would come back to Asu Mare! I have literally zero knowledge about Peruvian cuisine, and I've heard that the chicken is to die for, but they had run out of chicken for the day so I got the chuleta con arroz (pork chop with rice, $11). The plate came with a decent sized pork chop, white rice, and a bunch of french fries. I enjoyed the dish in general, but the pork chop was actually surprisingly salty. The white rice was fine and the fries were awful. They were completely soggy by the time we got back home (a mere few minute drive), so that was very unsatisfying. Still, this dish was only $11 and it's a mom and pop operation so I felt better about eating there. I'm told that there isn't much around in the way of traditional Peruvian, so I would come back. read more

Roasted chicken, two types of ceviche, seafood fried rice, etc. We also got a sweet drink, made of the corn, which no one was really a fan of, as it was overly sweet. You're given a small dish of roasted or fried corn to nibble on while you wait, which was nice, but it took forever for our food to come out. And it came out so sporadically, so that the first couple of people were done with their dishes by the time the last dish came out. I know it's a small restaurant, but it's very uncomfortable to have to either stare at your food while it gets cold or eat while another person stares at you. During the week day we went to try it out, we saw that it was open until 8 we drove and hours down for it to be closed !

The place was cute, in it's own lil buidling. You can tell it is definitely family owned. Very casual setting, with a TV playing soccer in background. Ordered the arroz con pollo (their typcial rice and chicken meal) and papa rellena (stuffed potato ball). Wasn't a fan of either meal unfortunately. This is partly due to the fact I am not a fan of olives (they used kalamta olives in the rellena) and they stuffed hard boiled eggs and other random thing in the ball. As for the rice and chicken, they were lacking for me in flavor. The place seems popular enough so maybe I ordered the wrong items. But I have had Cuban and Puerto Rican papa rellenas (which I love) so was pretty disappointed with these. They do give a very generous portion so you will be full at least. read more

Not to familiar with Peruvian but, I am willing to step outside the box. It has been years since I have had Peruvian but, I do remember enjoying it. First, the building is easy to miss. I have meant to stop there quite a few times but, by the time I thought to look for it I was past. Now, the reason I did not give it 5 stars. I asked for the takeout menu and then I asked if they had a gringo menu. They did not. There were pictures that were undeciferable and name of the dishes in there home language. I had to ask for recommendations from the gentleman at the front desk. He was very accommodating. That aside I will say that in general the food was delicious. We had an appetizer of cold mashed potatoes with a layer of chicken spread layered in the middle. It was OK but that does not mean it is not good to someone else. We definitely enjoyed the entree. It was a beef and vegetable dish with potatoes (cut like fries) in spices and gravy. The food was very good. Worth stopping even with the menu issue. Give it a try, you'll be glad you did. read more

Finally decided to give this place a go after reading other Yelp reviews. This was our first real venture into Peruvian food, and I'm glad we chose this place to do it. The menu could have been pretty intimidating, but our server was happy to point us in the right direction and offer some suggestions. Appetizer: Pappa Rellena - potato stuffed with ground beef, an egg, and raisins. SUPER yummy. It's served with an olive cream sauce which, if you love olives like I do, you will thoroughly enjoy. *Note on entrees: Portion sizes are HUGE. One dish is definitely enough for 2 people. Unless you are super hungry I can assure you'll have leftovers.* Entrees: Saltado a Lo Pobre with beef - I'm a sucker for anytime I see eggs on a dinner menu. Saltado is a stir fry that has French fries, onion, pepper, tomato and your protein choice, and is served with rice. The depth of flavors in this dish were fantastic, made even better by the fried eggs on top. Chaufa de Pollo (Peruvian fried rice with chicken) - YUM. My partner got this one, and I had to fight the urge to keep picking off of his plate. Lots of different flavors going on, and the chicken was perfectly cooked. No desserts this time because we were stuffed, and had plenty to take home from each entrée. As this place is close to home we will definitely be frequenting it more often! p.s. Asu Mare is a new Peruvian restaurant on US 9 in Freehold, close to the Howell border. Formerly a Greek restaurant, it is now open serving Peruvian food. My experience is fairly new to this cuisine (second time), and have a lot to learn about it, but find it a different from Mexican fare; some similarities too. In any event I like what I see so far. Easy to pass by, AM is a rather tiny building very close to US 9. As I walked in it looked even smaller than the other Yelp reviewers had described; maybe 8-10 tables. The walls of the dining room are painted in pastels which give it a South American vibe. Noticeable was how clean it was. It wasn't too crowded this Thursday evening and Maria our server invited us to sit wherever we liked. We sat to the far right rear right under the TV set blaring Spanish speaking TV. Maria graciously lowered the volume at our behest and the menu scan began. Two things struck me as I glanced through the pages; yes, several pages. One, there are a whole bunch of things to choose from and two, the prices are quite reasonable. OK, maybe three things. There were items I had no idea what I was looking at. Maria possibly sensing the angst on my face, came over to the table asking if we had any questions. Whew! My brother and I decided to split the fried plantains appy while I ordered the Tallarines Saltado de Camarones and he ordered a seafood Ceviche. I thought the plantains were OK. I felt it needed a sauce that was lacking. Now tallarines translates as spaghetti, at least in AM's menu, but I feel it is more like what we would consider a fettuccine to be. Saltado I'm told means stir fried so all their tallarines dishes will be stir fried. Mine was served with tomatoes, chives, onions, and shrimp, and plenty of them. Portions are enormous. Asu Mare is as authentic as it gets. Atmosphere was relaxed and casual. Food was delicious. What better way to dive right in and really judge a Peruvian restaurant than to try one of its most famous traditional dishes: Lomo Saltado. Plate was plentiful. I'd argue even enough to share between two people. The dish itself is rich in flavor. Not the best Lomo I've ever tried but good. The portion of rice that you get is not enough to share, but decent for one person. I also ordered plantains to go with it which were ripe and delicious. There's a sauce that they put in your table that is delicious with the food. Almost like a mayo/dressing. You're going to need more of it. The menu is expansive and has a lot to choose from--maybe even too much. One thing I noticed was that the prices were very volatile and at times didn't make sense as to why certain things were so expensive and others not. You'll notice if you visit. To drink, I ordered a Maracuya (passion fruit) juice and a glass of water. I mixed the two to lessen the sweetness throughout my meal. Very refreshing! My sister got a pesto spaghetti with chicken which was good, but she said she probably would get something else next time. Not sure if that's Peruvian cuisine as it tasted like an Italian pesto Alfredo. There aren't many places in Monmouth County that offer Peruvian food. Wow, the world is getting smaller. I've been around the "horn " and this would be the first time I've been to a Peruvian restaurant. My brother suggested the trip to this restaurant due to high ratings it received from various Yelpers. He told me this was formerly a Greek restaurant. Upon walking in we noticed the decor was definitely Latino, w/a Peruvian motif ( red & white ). From the outset, we got a good vibe from the Latino families enjoying their meals. Maria, our server, came over and introduced herself and set down the chips and homemade salsa, which had a light lemony piquant taste. We both enjoyed that very much that during our lengthy conversation. We ordered Tostones, which are fried battered plaintains , a tad dry, they could have used a kick-ass sauce. I ordered the ceviche mixto. Fresh Fresh & Fresh with its spicy lime juices on freshly mixed bed of seafood (mariscos)galore, see pic. Wow! It made me tear. I had enough to enjoy it at home. My brother ordered a spaghetti dish w/shrimp. It looked great. We both felt the prices are very reasonable, the restaurant is very clean, and there's ample parking.
