It is a simple staple which I have enjoyed in the US, in China and yes even in Italy. At it's most basic, it should be dough, sauce (doesn't have to be tomato necessarily), mozzarella and maybe some toppings, right? Here is where Oliveto went wrong for my mother and me: 1) they use cheap cheddar cheese - not mozzarella! 2) not a lot of sauce, maybe just enough to color it 3) the dough was soggy and didn't rise (I actually like thin crust, but this was inferior doug and 4) topping that were not as advertised, i.e. prosciutto should not look like and taste like store-bought sliced ham! Service was okay - the men like to talk about customers in their native tongue, thinking that patrons don't know what they are saying about them. We were so glad that we split a pie - most tables got a pie per person. Neither of us could finish this "pizza" honestly. Perhaps the only redeeming thing are the prices - this might be the cheapest choice in an otherwise expensive neighborhood.

Both pastas were cooked to perfection and the sauces were fabulous. I had the crème brûlée and my wife had the Panna Cotta with Lemoncello both were home made and delicious as was the Lemoncello. Our server Donna was wonderful and we even met the owner Giovanni who stopped by the table to make sure we had a excellent dinner and we told him how disappointed we were to be leaving the next day and unable to return again for dinner. I felt quite spoilt from the moment I walked in. Where ever you choose the sit the food is excellent..... from the antipasto followed by an amazing Prawn Tempura and then on to the truly historic (a nod to Mr. Winner there) home made spinach and ricotta ravioli that seriously rival my mother's which has been hitherto unheard of. The lamb was delicious, perfectly cooked and rested enough to be meltingly tender. I also sampled Bottarga for the first time with more amazing home made pasta and it was a party in my mouth. Despite being very sated I couldn't resist trying the cheesecake, it was perfect. Being Italian people always ask me where they can get 'real' Italian food in London. The word 'real' invoking memories of startlit dinners and languourous lunches eaten under a Tuscan sun. In future......I'll be sending them to Il Giardino. It's a real taste of Italian Summer in a beautiful English Garden.

My meal came to £5.60 which was such a bargain considering it was the best food I'd had in weeks.
