It was my first time in London and Bon Gusto was my first restaurant in the UK in my life. What a wonderful first experience. It's a quaint little Italian spot in the heart of London and it's a wonderful place to spend, especially at night. We ordered the Spaghetti alla Carbonara, the Strozzapreti Boscaiola, and a Bellini and Mimosa to go with our dinner. The food took just a little while to get here but I was sure that it was because they were taking their care with every dish the chefs made. I was right. The pasta was fresh, the sauce and the ingredients tasted very simple and hearty. It all tasted like my hypothetical imaginary nonna made it. The drinks were very good too and complimented the food nicely. Our waiter was absolutely the nicest guy ever. He was very attentive and made sure that we were happy with everything. In my head, I was going to tip him well, and then when we got the check, there was no option to tip. God save the UK. America could learn a thing or two about what it means to not make life all about work. That's beside the point. If you're in London, visit Bon Gusto. I can't wait to come again and happily hand them my money with the biggest smile on my face. read more

Dinner My wife and I were staying in London on vacation and this was the absolute best dinner we had . My Wife had the Penne with fantasia sauce and I had the Spaghetti Carbonara. Both pastas were cooked to perfection and the sauces were fabulous. I had the crème brûlée and my wife had the Panna Cotta with Lemoncello both were home made and delicious as was the Lemoncello. Our server Donna was wonderful and we even met the owner Giovanni who stopped by the table to make sure we had a excellent dinner and we told him how disappointed we were to be leaving the next day and unable to return again for dinner. This was our first meal upon our arrival to London. We were seated promptly and ordered two entrees and the calamari appetizer. The waitress wasn't particularly friendly and forgot to put in our calamari appetizer. I don't think she ever realized she messed up either. The pappardelle was pretty good (it's on the separate menu that's the chef's recommendation) and not listed online. The spaghetti was good too. My gripe was the place clearly charged foreigners for the still water, but gave the locals the free tap water. They came in different bottles so it was quite clear. I also watched it happen as more customers came in. When they said "water", they got the tap water if they were British. Everyone else when they said "water", got the £4 bottled water. Stopped in on a whim as a party of 3. There was only 1 other table seated, and the 2 gals with me gave me disapproving looks... sure I'd chosen poorly. Within an hour, there was a wait to get in. Booyah! I had a hard time choosing, as so many dishes sounded great. I knew I didn't want pizza &, despite really wanting pasta, I decided I didn't want the carb crash. Last minute reservations on a Friday night. We just wanted good wine and great pizza and got great wine and amazing pizza! 5/23/23 BEWARE: This was one of our worst meals of our 3 week trip. I think the decor was okay, and the service was acceptable, except for the manager (?, I think) who seems to think lumpy pasta served like a ball of dough is acceptable. 1. Frittura di Calamari e Zucchine £13.50 "deep fried calamari e courgette with lemon/capper [their spelling] mayonnaise": Remarkably under seasoned. Not crisp, and plate was kinda messy. 2/10 2. Spaghetti al Ragout di Carne Mista £17.50 "spaghetti with beef and pork ragout": Sorry, no notes. This was for my kid. 3. Spigola alla Griglia £29 "whole grilled sea-bass with vegetables of the day": Very juicy. The grilling was great with lovely char stripes. Unfortunately the rosemary was faaaaaaar too prominent. 7/10 4. Spaghetti alla Carbonara £17.50 "smoked pancetta, egg yolk, parmesan cheese, pecorino cheese, black pepper and parsley": Yeah so, it looked alright when served.... but then I tried to eat it. Put my fork in, lifted...... and the ENTIRE ball of dough came up. Everything was stuck together. It was so ridiculous I called the waiter over (and I think it was the manager who came?) and I told him I think this has been sitting out. He said, "We can remake this for you, but it will be the exactly the same. This is how carbonara is. The yolk and cheese makes it stick." I was like.... um, dude, I must have had 30 carbonaras over the years, and no, they weren't balls of dough. No, I've never been to Italy, but if that's how they make it in the motherland, then I prefer my American nicely silky, saucy, savory carbonara. And just a prelude... we did go to another Italian restaurant afterwards in UK, and I did get their carbonara just in case I was an idiot.... and yup, theirs was nicely silky, sauce, savory. Whatever dude. 1/10 5. 12.5 Service Charge £9.69: WAIT. What's this??????? Tip in UK? So, at the bottom of the check it also says, "Service Charge Optional," but this was listed as a line item on our bill, and the number was already added to the total. My lady paid, so I'm not clear if their machine added this automatically or she had to opt out, or there was no choice.... not sure how this worked, but yeah.... THERE IS NO TIP IN UK. Bon Gusto is an Italian restaurant that opens up early for breakfast and closes late for dinner. We alternate between here and Crumpets next door for our daily breakfast/brunch during out 1-week London Vacation. On the way back to the hotel each night from St. James's Park station, we always see customers enjoying late night eats here. The restaurant is clean, brightly-lit, and offers great service. Clean restrooms are also a big plus. Favorite items: 1. Black Americano - virtually every cup of coffee we've had in London is very bold and smooth, and Bon Gusto is no exception. 2. The English Breakfast is highly recommended - a very protein-rich plate of tomatoey beans, grilled ham, poached eggs, mushrooms, Cumberland sausage, and cherry tomatoes. This will set you up for the entire afternoon. Also excellent are the warm, thick slices of buttered sourdough toast. 3. The Smoked Salmon and Avocado over eggs and toast was another solid dish. London has fresh, creamy avocados and the salmon seems house-made and is less saltier/fishier than many other places. You can even enjoy brown sauce with those eggs. After eating here, you can take a short walk to Buckingham Palace, the St. James's Park Tube, or stand outside and take a selfie with the red phone booth. read more

We were in London staying at the st ermine Marriott and walked by the restaurant on the way to sightsee. Cute space with outdoor seating. We sat by the window. Outstanding. The service was absolutely top notch. The main server warmed our hearts. A cute older couple came in just before us without a reservation. She smiled and said under her breath that she wouldn't turn them away, even with a packed house. We had a reservation and smiled and told her we would happily wait. So glad we did. The food was top notch. We had burata and garlic bread, a pasta and a pizza. So great. We went back the next night! Great food, great location, great people.
