Have visited Dr Nicholaides' office a month ago with concers about my birth marks. He appeared quite knowledgeable and proffesional... However, they did not bother to send the skin specimen for analysis to my in network lab...and I have gotten this huge bill for lab services. When I called to ask why did this happen, receptionist told me that it is not their business to check what is my in netwrok lab ( they did have my insurance information ). Receptionist just did not care and gave me the attitude like there is a bill for your skin analysis and you have to pay it. It is unfortunate that they would not put your interest first ..but their own and relationship with their chosen labs.. will not go back... read more

Absolutely atrocious wait time. Even if you have an appointment expect to wait an extra two hours on a good day. The staff is lazy and doesn't even seem in a rush to see people. And then when they do see you they rush you through. I'm perplexed as to what takes these people so long to see people. read more

Dr. Nicolaides is fabulous! I have gone to him in the past few years to have moles removed and some skin tags. I have found him to be thorough, friendly and knowledgable. He has never left a mark on my scar prone skin when anything has been removed. He removed a small cyst on my face a few years ago. The second day after the visit, my face started to swell. I called and he told me to come in immediately. I told him no appts were available, he said come anyway, I'll see you and he did. I had no idea I was allergic to bacitracin but he knew right away. Dr. Nicolaides told me that it does happen and gave me a big tube of a cream that he said I should always have in the house for myself and what products to never use on my skin because they contain bacitracin. My husband went to him a few months back and was very happy with him. I didn't give five stars because the office is a bit disorganized and you do sometimes have to wait a long time. read more

After seeing 6 different DERMs, I came to him and he diagnosed me correctly. Something the other 6 could not do. I refer to him as the "God" of Derms in my book. His medication works. Lately I haven't seen him but the Physician's assistant. I must say I love her more. She is awesome. I truly believe in the skills of this office. I admit I didn't see the doctor himself, so I cannot comment on his bedside manner. The girls at the front were just fine, I didn't hear them speaking badly of any patients and they were most certainly not rude to me. The girl who asked me the basic questions once I was brought to the room was also very nice and the physician's assistant who came in afterwards was friendly, competent, professional, and--oh...my..god...--extremely beautiful. "Wow, just wow." She asked me what medication I was currently taking for my issue and, when I didn't remember, she told me to call the front desk when I got home and let them know, just so she can make sure. When I called, she was busy, so the front desk took down the name of my medication and my number, consulted with her, and called me back a little later. Overall a good and, most importantly, QUICK experience. I was hardly there for twenty minutes. read more

Dr. Effie who is an associate in Dr. Nicholaedes office had been treating me for a couple of months with accutane for severe acne without excepting my insurance( had to pay for every visit) and she is amaizing. She is so knowledgeable and very friendly, she is amazing in explaining everything you have questions about, that's why I didn't mind paying for every visit. After I was so happy with her, I brought my son to this office to see dr. Effie for his acne even though they didn't take my insurance. She treated him with antibiotics and we kept seeing her for a couple of months. We didn't return to this office in a couple of months because my son was doing good for a while and then his acne started acting up again. Eventually I recommended family and friends to visit this office. I called to make an appointment to see Dr. Effie again for my son but they wanted to charge double the money for the visit because we didn't visit within a year (13 months later). I now regret recommending this office because Dr. Nicholaedes wants to overcharge patients who did not return within a year, he charges his patients double the visit if they didn't return in a year. Even though I could visit dermatologists who except my insurance in my neighborhood, i chose to pay to see Dr. Effie, I wish my family and I could see Dr. Effie in another office, not Dr. Nicholaedes' office. read more

Just went to visit with my child on Saturday. The front desk employee with blonde hair was very kind and professional and had everything in a nice organized fashion. Considering she was by herself she had it all under control and remained personable. My child was nervous but the PA was very warm to him and helped ease his nerves with the initial consult. The doctor than came and added more to the positive experience he explained everything in detail and was very patient. As for those who complain about the wait time ... I waited longer at a cafe for a frappe! I highly recommend this facility. read more

Do not waste your time. Hes the hot shot of astoria and everyone and their mother goes to him. I used to go to him when I was a teenager and he would give me creams and pills for my acne and kept making me go back every two weeks for peels that would make me break out even more. I didnt like his vibe but i thought it would help in the long run. i was wrong. My dad went to him a few months ago (because he had a mole my mom was worried about) and he scared my entire family. He (instead of reassuring my dad it wasnt cancer) scared that ish out of my family and made him do a biopsy. Better to be safe than sorry right?! I agreee. But he 'lost' the sample several times and made my dad keep going back for more samples (which hurt), just so he can profit from insurance. I made an appoitment for laser hair removal on wed and called out of work for the appointment. I get there and they make me wait 45 minutes before the secretary asked me where my referral is. And I asked her why i was not told I needed a referral when I made the appointment, if one was needed. She had no answer for me. Mind you I am doing LASER HAIR REMOVAL a COSMETIC procedure that is not covered by insurance. I explain that to her and she got confused (go figure). I eventually was speaking to 3 girls at once who then decided I had to pay $100 for the consultation. WHAT!? I am going to be spending thousands of dollars at your place and you want $100 from me? Most places have free consultations! I then said I would reschedule and asked for a pamphlet with their prices. She wrote it on a used piece of ripped computer paper and scribbled the numbers down. I told my my mom after and she explained to me that they wanted a referral so the doctor can claim I went for a check-up or something so he can get paid from my insurance for the visit. Sorry Nicolades, if you had better employees you weren't so money hungry you could have put $5567-cash, in your pocket. I am now looking for a LEGIT place. I've been to a handful of dermatologist in my life and I have to say that I always feel like none of my skin "problems" are ever big enough, or serious enough to pique a dermatologist's interest. Dr Nicolaides included. Since I don't have much time on my hands, and it's been several years since I've seen any dermatologist - I came in with a list of things that I wanted to cover. The following are things that were glossed over: Sun spots, Ashy skin / Eczema, Underarm cysts I'm very glad I don't have anything serious, don't get me wrong. That being said, it doesn't mean my symptoms are not bothersome to me. I was told the cysts are normal and if i REALLY wanted them removed, then I needed to schedule another visit. No cream samples given for eczema or dry skin. Told to "watch out for the sun". Glad I wasted my time. Btw, while in the waiting room (which wasn't a terribly long wait) - I listened to two receptionists talk sarcastically about every single person who called in and their "stupid" questions. Talk about mean girls... Made me feel like they most likely did the same thing when I first called in. On the upside, I found a great greek pastry place located in the same open mall. I was at the doctors office today and had the most horrible experience.The staff does'nt say hello,they just ask you to fill out a 3 page questionnaire,your credit card and ID.I am not a new patient and i told the girls that i do not feel comfortable giving my credit card.They said if i do not give my credit card that they would not attend to me.Then they told me that i had an outstanding bill that my insurance didnt pay so i told them i would call the insurance company to confirm.They said that if i didnt pay right now that they would not see me.I requested to speak to the doctor and they gave me the run around,he finally came and said that i was out of order to have him speak to me.His staff was extremely rude and im sorry to say that the doctor made me feel like he is in it just for the money.The office was packed with people,there was even two guys eating pizza out of a box in the middle of the office.They dont make you feel that they care for the patient.The first thing they ask for is your money.Very sad!!! While I cannot complain about the medical attention my children received here. Unfortunately their billing is terrible. Despite numerous calls and visits to try to get them to bill me what was reflected on my insurance's EOB, I was approached by them two years later saying I owed them money. I asked to speak directly with the doctor as I wanted to share my concerns directly but was stonewalled. He was unwilling to speak with me. I will never return as I need to know that they will bill correctly so that I can have my insurance cover the visits and it is too risky to go to someone with an inadequate billing department who is also totally unwilling to have a conversation to try to fix it. read more

Worse doctor's office in Astoria. Extremely rude doctor, and front desk personnel. They have no professionalism nor consideration for their patients. They are deceitful. I had to schedule an emergency appointment over the phone, the receptionist and the doctor told me my insurance will not cover a subsequent visit and when I told the doctor that it was an emergency (I had bite marks on my arm), they told me that it was not an emergency and if i needed to come in, I would have to pay out of pocket. I called my insurance and they verified that this was misinformation, my insurance would cover the cost of the visit and they told me that the doctor should give a determination that something is not an emergency and they prompted me to file a claim against the practice within my insurance. I plan on doing so. Save yourself the headache. They dont know what theyre doing, they are not to be trusted. read more

My experience with Nicolaides is the worst care I have ever received from a doctor. Three months after my office visit, and several following phone calls, I learn that no one has followed through with my medical claim to treat my hyperhydrosis. In those months I never received an update on the claim unless I called, and apparently "it takes times" really meant, "I'm too lazy to check on your claim, so I'll just dismiss it." Today - after being rudely brushed off on the phone again- I went into the office only to be told that I had to take care of the situation myself because the office is too busy. The bills however are never late. I recommend seeking a dermatologist that actually has the patients' care in mind. Health costs too much money to go to a doctor you cannot trust. read more

Love this place. They are very helpful and nice at the front desk and the physician assistants are great! If at first glance the front desk staff seems standoffish, they will warm up to you. I've never gotten and attitude from anyone. Everyone is very helpful and knowledgable. Be sure to ask the right questions! Pros: by the train, parking, and there is a facility in the complex that takes blood (if needed for your treatment of course.) Cons: traffic, but that's Astoria for you. I brought my daughter there and were on time for her appointment. we waited 90 min to see the doctor and to make matters worse, people who came in 30 min after us were seen before us. What is the point of the appointment? Staff and doctor made half hearted excuses. I think the best thing I could say about the staff is the same as another reviewer and call them stand offish. They and not helpful and we as patients just seemed like we were nothing more than someone disturbing them from their personal conversations, or their phones. I went to dr Nicolaides for a mole check and found him to be very thorough and careful. He was to the point , answered all my questions and didnt rush me. Also didn't seem eager to remove any moles since it wasn't necessary. Everyone I went to before always seemed to always wanted to remove stuff that left me with several scars. I would definitely recommend this practice to those seeking help for highly specific and/or urgent skin care needs. For example, if you have a mole or beauty mark that is acting unusual or has a strange appearance, or if you have an isolated infection or lesion linked to a specific event (bugbite, infected cut, etc.), this practice will immediately carry out a quick and painless biopsy to be on the safe side or to check for a particular bacteria/fungi/and so on. They will also contact you with the results of the biopsy labs relatively quickly, between 1 and 2 weeks. Dr. Nicolaides is quick and direct, and he will answer whatever questions that you have. However, the office atmosphere is slightly disorganized and seems a little difficult for some patients and terms of payment, as they only accept cash for co-payments and their credit card reader is sometimes down. The wait time is also fairly long, even during the middle of a weekday. As Dr. Nicolaides is very busy, you may have a relaxed and thorough appointment one day, and a rather rushed appointment the next time, so there is little consistency in the overall "feel" to visits. Finally, as Dr. Nicolaides is a very intelligent and experienced dermatologist, he can be a bit difficult and slightly intimidating when he feels any "push-back" against his diagnosis, whether that diagnosis is based on concrete labwork or his own discretion ("eye-balling", if you will). This applies more to chronic and/or "vague" skin concerns that cannot easily be linked to a clear, precise cause. Once he decides what he believes to be the source of your dermatological issues, there seems to be a mental "wall" that prevents him from considering any other options. He will not test for something unless he personally suspects it to be the problem; in fact, he seems unwilling to even consider something that he himself does not come up with--e.g., the patient asks "Should I consider the possibility of X?" and he replies, flat-out, "This is not X" or "You do not have X" without a moment's consideration of the potential validity of the suggestion. He also does not ask about any symptoms that are not somehow dermatological in nature, which is problematic for patients with chronic/systemic conditions or illnesses, and this lack of the "full picture" likely contributes to the rigidity of his diagnoses. This aspect of the practice is a shame because the doctor is highly skilled and can be very efficient and supportive, yet there have probably been many patients with issues that went undiagnosed or developed complications as a result of his stubbornness. If you have a specific, acute, and/or isolated problem, this is a great practice. If you are dealing with something chronic or possibly systemic (e.g., skin manifestations of a non-dermatological issue), I would recommend you instead visit an internist, rheumatologist, naturopath, or specialist in a field directly related to the [possible] source of your primary underlying symptoms. read more

I had seen many dermatologist for a very "rare skin condition", and was told that not much could be done. After hearing great things from coworkers that had visited dr.nicolaides, I decided what was one more opinion? upon scheduling my appointment, I spoke to Nicole and she was great, squeezing me in on such a last minute notice, under the condition that I was to see dr. nicolaides's physician assistant, if I remember correctly her name was EFFY. At first I was apprehensive because I had heard only about the doctor, but being that I was traveling within the next wk, I figured why not? after all I had seen so many doctors prior with no resolution. The office was a bit cold and somewhat unwelcoming and the wait was about and hour, the waiting room was packed all patients waiting to see this physician assistant that I was not so thrilled to see, after waiting and contemplating leaving, my name was called. she was a ball of knowledge she sat with me for 20 some minutes and discussed this "rare skin condition that she explained was really not that rare. She discussed all the options that I had and prescribed creams that have helped me a great deal. Although, there is no cure for what I have, knowing that I can control it brings me a sense of relief. Since my fist visit, I have been back at the office 2 additional times, where I met with dr. nicolaides, who was very knowledgable but lacks bedside manners. personally I would rather see a doctors who knows what there talking about instead of someone who talks nice! read more
