I visited Dr. Kwak on July 13, 2024, at the Fordham location. I am aware that Dr. Kwak also works out of the Queens Elmhurst location. So this is to warn other patients who may be scheduling with him at this location. When Dr. Kwak entered the room, he immediately began discussing my previous visit and medications with his assistant, without first addressing the reason for my current visit. It was evident that he had not reviewed the notes taken by the assistant upon my arrival, as my current visit was unrelated to my previous one. I had to tell Dr. Kwak three times that I was there for a new, unrelated issue. Despite this, he quickly and dismissively asked to see my skin and began prescribing medications without investigating the cause of my skin reaction or considering my recent allergic reaction and complex medical history, which the assistant had carefully documented. As he rushed out, I remembered that he had not examined my face, where I had another issue, because I was wearing a mask. The assistants tried to inform him, but I heard him dismiss them in the hallway, falsely claiming he had seen my face. When I confronted him, he attempted to gaslight me, insisting I had pulled my mask down, which I had not. He once again, started suggesting a face wash without any further investigation or questions. The stressed and exasperated looks on the staff's faces reflected my own frustration with this doctor. While I sat in the room, I could hear Dr. Kwak loudly speaking to other patients, prescribing medications without listening to their concerns and cutting them off mid-sentence, just as he had done with me and the staff. The staff at this location have been wonderful, and my experience with Dr. Curtis Chen was excellent. However, my encounter with Dr. Kwak was a stark contrast. Despite his impressive credentials and advocacy claims on the website, his behavior was dismissive, rude, and unprofessional. If he cannot provide compassionate and attentive care to the underserved population, he should consider retirement. The people of the Bronx deserve better than the neglect and harm caused by doctors like him. He also has several other negative one star reviews stating they had a similar experience to mine here: https://www.healthgrades.com/physician/dr-charles-kwak-29hnm

But they never got the approval for it and then never followed up with me or with an appeal; so that left me a negative experience. It seems they're less competent than their flushing main office. 2ndly, I give my medications and what I stopped taking wasn't removed so the doctor had to do the job all over again. 3rdly, I was told that what I wouldn't be able to remember would be written down and for me not to worry. But what I did get was a couple of business cards with the name of the rx creams. The explanation and caution that was verbally communicated was not written nor provided like I was assured by Stacy Li. This was my biggest dismay. I have a lot of prescriptions and some require a two part mixture and others can't be used long term. All of that information I needed was not given to me in writing as promised. Competence and following through has been their biggest issue in my experiences.

What sets Dr. Casal apart is that she never stops learning. Year after year, she stays ahead of the curve, always incorporating the latest treatments, technologies, and medical advancements into her practice. The results? You don't just hear about them, you see them, and you see them quickly. Just this past March 16th, I had a BBL treatment with Dr. Casal and a Halo Scion session with Marisol, and as always, I was in the best hands. Both treatments were performed with incredible precision and care, and I'm already looking forward to seeing the results unfold over the coming days. But beyond her expertise, what truly makes Piel Viva special is the whole experience. Her staff is not only highly knowledgeable but genuinely warm and welcoming. You never feel like just another appointment on the calendar. And speaking of appointments, they always run on time. That kind of respect for your time is rare and deeply appreciated. If you're looking for a dermatologist who combines decades of experience with cutting-edge medicine and a team that truly cares, look no further. Dr. Miriam Casal and the entire Piel Viva family have earned my trust and loyalty for 25 years, and counting.

Didn't seem right so went to Dr. Casal who felt those moles could be problems and she snipped it and sent a biopsy where a very mild skin cancer could be starting. Being treated and things are going well and am grateful to her finding something that another missed, and a big miss only weeks before. She was much more thorough and was just great.

My 85 year old mother was expected to do that. Fortunately I was with her. They rotate their staff through their various offices and don't tell you. Mom had a follow up with a PA she loves and when we arrived for her appointment a different PA came in the room. It was only after I demanded to speak to a manager that I learned mom's PA was at another facility that day and no one told us. We were then told if we wanted to come back they would charge us for the visit. So this place is essentially a factory. They don't care about patient/ physician relationships. They have zero customer service. It's the McDonalds of Dermatology. Stay away.

The doctors (MD) and Medical Assistants/Scribes are great, and some of the Physician Assistants…read more(PA) are too. However, the office staff are rude, incompetent, and negligent. They fumbled the prior authorization with insurance for a medication I needed, and it took another 2 months for it to be processed. I had to prompt them repeatedly with weekly phone calls after my insurance company called me to say the DermaSpecs team had provided incorrect paperwork and cpt treatment/billing codes, and they could not get in touch with their office. Imagine paying copays, and hundreds via insurance, only to have to do their job for them. My insurance's prior authorization dept explained the billing issue and cpt code mistakes so I could address it... I then spent far too many days playing telephone with the DermaSpecs office. I even had to explain what a cpt code was to the front desk staff in order for them to redirect me, when I tried to address this in person. Needless to say, that prior authorization expired and it took several weeks yet again to get a new one. Apparently no one had noticed or thought to renew it, all the while continuing to provide services. They tried passing the uncovered costs onto me but *surprise balance billing is now illegal* and their responsibility. It's their job to maintain patient records and handle billing; they know insurances do not pay for services rendered without a valid prior auth and yet make careless mistakes. While addressing the insurance/cpt snafu, I spoke with different offices since the DermaSpecs only has 1 main line (which can be answered by any of their branches). Only the Astoria location's staff has been snarky and condescending. The front desk has been brazen enough to roll their eyes when I was in-office standing in front of them to see... and I've witnessed them argue and raise their voice with patients when they've expressed appt timeliness/ wait time/ insurance concerns. They have such a high receptionist turnover rate that its unclear whether they've been trained in customer service yet or if this is truly the highest level of "professionalism" the office can provide. I hope it's the former, for patients' sakes. Don't expect to be seen promptly, even with an appt. Wait times have sometimes run an hour past my scheduled appt time. Walk-ins are discouraged... they tend to claim they're fully booked after 12 pm, despite an emty waiting room. I decided to wait there one day just in case a patient canceled (because I had a free afternoon and needed a consultation); not long after sitting in a waiting room with 1- 2 other people the Dr's schedule "freed up". The only reason I used this office so often was out of convenience because its by my job. That and their doctors work with a great specialty pharmacy that's able to navigate my insurance's rules to provide meds my insurance won't approve elsewhere. TLDR try another DermaSpecs location. Their doctors rotate and some offices are better than others.

First of all, I had an appointment on a Thursday at 2:30pm, I got here at 1:40pm because I know they take more than an hour to bring you in the office. They have me fill out a 10 page paper(for the second time, because I already did in my first appointment) after I fill it out, I ask them if it's necessary that I fill all these papers every time I go. Turns out they lost my file, charged me extra(charged me $100 when I'm supposed to pay $70) and blame it on me, when they know it was their mistake losing my file. It's 3:48pm and I'm still waiting to be checked by the doctor after 2 hours! They even let another lady whose appointment was at 2:45pm go before me. This place sucks, not reliable at all. Be ready to lose your entire day coming to this place. Definitely not worth it, be smart, if you can go somewhere else where they treat you like an actual human and care about your time then do, as I am going to do.
