I got carry out from here this evening and it did not disappoint. I had the Mediterranean chicken wrap, salmon and my sides were the eggplant and baba ghanooj. All the food was delicious! This place has been on my go to list for quite some time now. I went on a weekday evening around 7pm. It wasn't crowded at all. We were immediately greeted and given a menu. I decided to get a gyro to go. Maybe that was one of there off days because I totally missed what all of the hype is about. Maybe there other dishes are amazing but the gyro was just ok. The consistency of the Tzatkiki sauce was off. Garlic overpowered the little cucumbers that were in there. It was chunky and not in a good way. The seasoning was off with the meat...tasted more "savory" vs that greek/Mediterranean kick I expected. I'll consider stopping by again if I am in the area to give it another try but I wouldn't make a special trip. read more

Astor's food has become quite inconsistent as of late. Likewise, kitchen staff and cashiers seem confused about how things are run / what is meant to come with an order. My last experience there was very poor. Food took nearly 40 minutes to be prepared and then once I did receive my order (mixed kabob platter), some of the kabobs were under-cooked whereas others were overcooked. I was also served mushy rice on the side and spicy green sauce that had turned nearly brown (guess it was old). I heard other customers complaining that evening, as well. I hope Astor can clean up its act and return to becoming a reliable Arlington restaurant. For now, I don't plan to come back. read more

Terrible place. Ordered the beef and chicken kabob and hummus. Cashier forgot to add the hummus to my order, so I decided not to order it separately after I already paid. I substituted fries for salad, but the order came out with salad. No ice for water or soft drinks. The beef was so chewy I couldn't eat it and the chicken was like rubber. A lady came out and asked how it was and I told her it was terrible and to send out manager. She apparently didn't tell the manager to come out and 10 minutes later he happened to be walking by. I told him the meal was terrible and he offered to get me something else. I said no thx and please refund me. He then got an attitude and said I should have told him sooner. I replied I told your staff and that really is irrelevant. I was still hungry so I tried to eat it, but as I continued to try to chew the tough meat I gave up. He apologized and refunded me. Customer service isn't his thing apparently. Worst restaurant around. Avoid at all costs!!!! read more

Did not come here expecting to be as impressed as I was. I had the gyro, which was absolutely delicious (but I should have asked for extra tzatziki) I also had a side of the spicy chickpeas and rice, which was a very generous portion (could have easily been a meal) but was not joking when it said spicy!! Hands down some of the best mediterranean food I've ever had in my life! They use simple, fresh ingredients in all their dishes and it's evident in the first bite of whatever you order. Wow if I could give this place a lower score I would. I was just there yesterday and the chick at the counter royally f**ked me over. She was supposed to charge me $39.99 for my meal and my boyfriend's meal what she ended up doing was charging me $390.99!!!! She must have noticed she messed up because she started talking to another girl at the counter in a different language and then between the two of them they charged me AGAIN!!!! This time $39.99 to give me that receipt with that amount paid. I just looked at my account and both charges are there from yesterday within minutes. Astor used to be our go to place for all occasions. Today I sadly declared we are no longer coming to this place. First of, I always get their French Fries because it's one of the best side dishes I have ever tasted. Today it was just a horrible experience, their Fries is all soaked in oil, tasted all soggy, and smelled like fish. We had to brought it back and complaint it to the girl and she had to cooked the new Fries. Which, then she gave back the same over cooked fries that they gave me the first place. Then the next items we ordered is pizza, which they messed up and burn it completely off. My friend have braces and she can't eat it due to their over burned supper crispy pizza. Then we also ordered a chicken panini. Instead of giving us panini bread, they gave us pita bread. Which tasted nothing like what we had before. Even the meat was different, all dried and no long have that same quality that it used to have. They also reduced the cup size to a smaller one. IN SHORT, DON't WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY. Today was a sad day. RIP Astor. Astor used to be my favorite restaurant in the area. This isn't an exaggeration. It was cheap, close, fast, and the food was great. Today, things changed. Apparently Astor is under new management, and dishes have changed slightly. Some of this may be as a result of new staff (and I can't fault this, I'm sure they'll get better over time) but when I order something for take out (vegetarian platter) and it's missing 2 of the main components, that's not a good sign. Additionally, a third piece of the meal is apparently not included anymore (the spinach pie), and the baba ganoush has changed (I think that's what I was served at least?). To the new management: please, don't be stingy with the spinach pies (this is both literal and a metaphor, just to be clear). Astor was my favorite place to go for a quick, cheap, bite, and I hope it stays that way. I'll keep coming back for now in the hopes that things improve, but that's on you. I'm hopeful that I'll be able to update this and make it a 5 star review in the future. read more

Maybe it's me, but I'm not impressed. All I have to go on is my gyro, fries and Coke, for $9. That's a value meal for sure. But perhaps it was not the best selection from here? The fries are the prepackaged & breaded kind. I couldn't tell if they were cut into fries or some sort of potato product in stick form. Though crispy, they tasted funky, and I didn't eat many of them. The gyro was just okay, as gyros go. It's real gyro meat on a spit (see pic). But, The Greek Spot does it right, and for various reasons, starting with the bread, this doesn't even come close. It wasn't authentic either. Judging by the menu, I'd say they probably have better Turkish dishes. Though the menu does include Pizza, Eggplant Parmesan, Kufta, several Kabobs, Baba Ghanooj, Falafel, etc, etc. All of the Mediterranean is represented. Is it all done well? I don't know, and I don't care to find out. I rarely have a good experience at catch-all restaurants like this. There are many restaurants in the area that do each individual country's food well. There is no need for one place that does it all, adequately. I'm sad to say, I didn't enjoy my first experience. As such, there are so many other options around here that I won't bother to try Astor again read more

I thought it was a running joke saying "RIP Astor" but unfortunately it's true. To all my regulars at Astor, the good times are long and gone. I ordered a steak and cheese panini only to get chicken sandwich because they have no organization. But once they fixed that, I was presented an open sandwich on a sub roll. Clearly it was not a panini and I had no patience to fight them on it. They forgot about my fries that I ordered and my friend pointed out they were eating fries behind the counter from the basket! The salmon is bland and the pizza is now smaller and thin crust! This is what happens when new management comes in thinking they can cut corners. So long Astor, never going there again. read more

we were rushing to get to our bus stop but we had about 20 minutes to go here, order food, and rush to the bus station. Reviews were great and you know what? Well worth it for almost missing our bus! haha. We tried the gyro wrap and grilled chicken. Here's what's amazing about the gyro wrap - 100% lamb.... Some places will have mix of lamb and beef...and for some who don't eat beef but want to try out a gyro - this is a spot for you! This wrap was delicious, the lamb was tender but had a nice slightly crisp exterior from slow cooking on the rotating rotisserie. The grilled chicken was good as well but I highly recommend the gyro wrap! read more

Tasty, filling, affordable. The gyro and kufta (ground sirloin & seasoned lamb) can each be had for about $7 each. Both are generously filled with their respective meats in addition to tzatsiki, feta, tomato, cucumber, red onion & cilantro. The kufta has the added ingredient of tahini. I've DEFINETLY had better gyro. The restaurant looked shabby - uncovered dried out hummus (yuck), water puddles on the floor and just unappealing. I had to think twice before opting for a take out here. I ordered two Mediterranean chicken gyros to- go and I had a 20 min wait, or even longer I think. The gyros weren't packed carefully and had ingredients falling out in my brown bag. The pita bread was soggy and the chicken had no flavor. I was expecting some sort of a creamy Tzatziki sauce, but this had none. Infact it was some sort of unappealing watery red sauce ( or maybe the juices from the chicken - I have no clue) I had to throw my second gyro away - I just couldn't eat it. The lamb shank was huge, well worth 16 bucks. The lamb kabob, about 11 bucks, had 6 measly pieces of meat. For that reason alone, I prefer Kabob Bazaar to Astor. About two months ago there was a complete overhaul in staff and ownership. We used to come to Astor at least once a week after the gym, sometimes twice. Everything went down hill with new management. Orders are never ready even though they're placed 20 minutes ahead of time and the quality of the food dropped sharply. We gave new management not one or two but three tries to get it "right" and see if Astor would get back to it's former glory. Stopped here last night on the strength of the mini-review in the Washington Post and was very pleasantly surprised. It wasn't extremely crowded at 8, and my fresh-to-order beef souvlaki sandwich (on a pita with feta, tzaziki, cucumber, tomato, and tahini) came out quickly. The super-cute lady at the checkout was so excited that I ordered rice pudding (squealing, "my favorite!" as she rang it up), but I was sadly disappointed by it - too sweet and too thin, though I liked the addition of coconut on top. I gobbled my sandwich in the car on the way home (give me a break, I was sooo hungry!), which was probably not the smartest idea as it was very juicy and leaked out of the foil wrap. I was initially surprised by the portion size, which seemed small when compared to the massive kebab platters at Ravi or subs from the Italian Store that go for the same pricxe (~$7), but Astor was generous with the amount of meat in the sandwich and it ended up being a satisfying dinner. I'll definitely stop by again to try the roast chicken that everyone else seemed to be enjoying. It's always nice to add one more relatively healthy fast-casual place to the rotation, especially one with easy parking. read more

Famished after a grueling workout, I headed to Astor Mediterranean for a healthier alternative than most in the area. I opted for the vegeterian platter in hopes of continuing the euphoria of health and goodness. The platter is decent. It does give you a great number of options but the quantity is rather meager. The cucumber salad, lentil salad, and the chick pea salads were rather dry. The only decent item on the platter was probably the eggplant. The pita bread that came with the platter was so dry that it tasted like cardboard and reminded me of a piece of pita bread that I accidentally left out on the counter for weeks. Still hungry, I ordered the lamb shank hoping that would satiate my hunger while providing much needed protein into my weak body. It comes with two sides, much bigger portions than my vegetable platter which I liked, with a decent size of lamb shank. It's a nice option and a steal at $12. I don't think I would ever crave this lamb shank but definitely filled my need for meat. So after two full sized entree, I left still feeling a bit hungry. Oh well. Time for another snack. read more

Located in a dead section of Arlington - off Rt 50, across from a dilapidated strip mall targeted for demolition, RIP Royal Lee - sits Astor Mediterranean, a hidden gem. Well I suppose it's not very hidden since there are quite a few reviews, but it was hidden to me. I've only been once so far but was impressed. I got takeout - a falafel sandwich for me and a gyro for my SO. The falafel was really, really tasty. SO liked his gyro. We'll have to go back to sample some of their other offerings. Other odds and ends.... It's a good, cheap meal. They have a lot of outdoor seating, but you won't get a lot of good people watching in here since there is nothing else around it. I noticed a few beers in the case. It was busy, but not packed, when I picked up my dinner. It's cafeteria-style but with a little more character than say Pho 75 or El Pollo Rico. DO NOT go here. WORST SERVICE I've ever had- EVER. Just saw under new ownership...That explains a lot=sad!! We've loved this place for years. I've never written a negative review in my life. I was a server and bartender at one time in my life, so I know better. But seriously it took an hour and a half for a sandwich, salad and humus-no special requests... it normally take 10 minutes. Clueless, unhelpful, disorganized, terrible. The food was still good, but they gave us one pita for a full order of hummus, i asked for a second..it has always been two per order- lady argued- I said whatever, so had tons left over. Wrong sandwich- despite clearly saying steak and cheese sandwich-third time was the charm... Greek salad had tons of beets all over it- the sample one in the box did not, I hate beets, so half the salad was a waste. I was so fed up with trying to get decent food I didn't say anything. I am one of the easiest go with the flow people, and I wanted to smash dishes and cause a massive scene. It was TERRIBLE. It used to be when dinner was my choice, or I'd had a hard day, my husband knew Astor was my go to. No longer. I will not darken their doorstep for quite a while if ever. No apology, zero interest in the customer- perhaps I'll go back in a few months to see if they get their act together but honestly they deserve to go out of business. So. Good. I have been more than satisfied with everything I have eaten at this place over the past several months. You can't really get here from the Metro unless you're willing to walk from VA Square (which is a bit of a hike in cold weather), but if you like mediterranean food, are hungry, determined and/or can acquire some sort of wheeled transportation device, you should really get yourself over to Astor. Of particular note for me are the chicken kebab, astor salad, dolma, curried chickpeas, felafel and the roast chicken (while in a different sort of flavor category, I say it could give Super Pollo a run for its money - although there's no yuca to found). The felafel's green on the inside and while I'm not sure what that's about, it tastes fantastic. If you ask, they'll even throw french fries inside your pita with the felafel, just like they serve them at street stalls in Manhattan(the good ones, anyway). The french fries themselves are actually pretty great, too. Don't hesitate to get those as a side. The Astor Salad is a massive amount of food. I'm not even sure I can list all of the ingredients but it's definitely not one of those "mostly lettuce" types of affairs. Feta, beets, chick peas and even a dolma or two are usually thrown in for good measure. Whatever the house dressing is that comes with it is also very good. It's some kind of creamy peppercorn stuff. Curried chickpeas are a must for side-dishes. I never leave the place without them. Chicken kebabs are outstanding. They're always cooked perfectly, with a moist interior and a great grilled flavor. The menu is fairly large and it's easy to get stuck on one or two dishes as they become your favorites, but I would encourage exploring it. I'll make a concerted effort to try the rest of the stuff they have to offer and report back. I can't imagine that I can really go wrong here. read more

Wow, I am kind of amazed that I haven't reviewed Astor Mediterranean yet. Their Astor Vegetarian platter definitely hits the spot, and is better Middle Eastern food than most in Arlington. It does to be on the salty and oily side, but I really like the mix of dishes you get. But here's the thing. You may ask yourself "why the hell would I order pizza from a Middle Eastern place?" Find out for yourself by ordering the Egyptian pizza (I get it vegan by leaving off the feta and adding soy cheese). On top of a crisp, fennel-flecked crust lives a layer of deeply-garlic infused oil that suffuses the entire pizza and is about as good as it gets. Honestly, I would order this pizza often if that was the end of it, but by the time you add the jalapeños, tomatoes, green pepper, and that luscious roasted eggplant, you get one of my favorite pizzas ever. I'm from Chicago, where we rarely praise non-deep dish pizza, so hark: you need to order the Egyptian. Damn. read more

I ordered the eggplant Parmesan Panini. First it didn't look like or taste like it was sauteed in tomatoes or garlic. Then It had very little or no cheese at all in it. Basically I ate an eggplant Panini. So I was let down, cause I live eggplant parmesan, and with great reviews of this place I couldn't wait. I didn't even bother to complain, cause I rarely do. I just leave bad reviews and never go back. Simple as that. My wife ordered a Gyro and as I tasted a few bites, it was good. Good places cant mess this up. Astor is a bright, sunny looking dining room and take out in a horrible location. Situated next to a seedy Days Inn, and across from a vacant strip mall that has seen better days (like when the Royal Lee was there), Astor is in the ground floor of a new self-storage building. Despite the location, the owners make the most of it, with tasteful decorating and a large patio for good weather. The kufta kebabs were excellent - moist and flavorful, with a great rice served with it. The included chickpeas were also in a great, savory sauce and complemented the kebab perfectly. This, along with Kabobs Inn, is the best kufta I've had in the area. My wife sampled the lamb kebabs, which were juicy and well cooked. I noticed they deliver which is a huge plus, although the dining area is just fine, outfitted with TVs showing sports with lots of natural light and great smells coming from the kitchen. This is a top notch Mediterranean joint that deserves to thrive despite its marginal location, and hopefully it is/does. read more

Astor is excellent! I recently took my wife to Astor, and she couldn't get enough of it. The restaurant is very casual, you order at the counter, and pick up your own food. The prices are excellent, and the atmosphere is great. On a comfortable night, you can even sit outside, and enjoy the weather! I had the kufta kabob, and my wife had the gyro. My kabob was delicious, cooked to perfection, and the gyro was excellent! The hunks of meat were tender and perfectly seasoned. We also had some falafel, which was delicious. The service is great, and the atmosphere is clean and bright. I look forward to returning and getting the pizza! Definitely will be returning! read more

Astor is really a hidden gem in a busy neighborhood. I've ordered takeout and dine in on multiple occasions. Their online ordering system is seamless and the food is always ready when I arrive. The food is always very fresh. Not to mention extremely affordable. Their Greek salad with various protein runs $10-16, depending on the meat. The falafel platter is also fantastic. I can't begin to tell you how amazing this food was. My girlfriend and I were staying in Arlington with some friends to secure a future apartment and we wanted Mediterranean food. After a quick search on Yelp for options, we came quickly (thru reviews and thru location) upon Astor Mediterranean and it was by far the best choice in food we had all weekend! We arrived around 3 PM after a 8-mile walk around DC and were SO happy to see the food is traditionally prepared, it was fresh and most of it organic! My girlfriend ordered the falafel sandwich and I ordered the chicken kabobs that came with rice/lentils, and 2 other sides. They were all so delicious and good for them, we were starved! You order and grab a number and sit (inside or outside) anywhere you want. They do have various beers to offer in addition to soft drinks. The food was reasonably priced assuming the type/style of food and the quality. I think I paid $10 after tax for my meal with a drink. Would and will most certainly be visiting Astor again soon! read more

I went there at night. They were about to close. They have an Okay staff. I ordered something called, "Multi-Kabob" which was combination of all Kabobs. Quality wise, it wasn't as tasty as I expected to be. It took them 20 minutes to get it ready, though they didn't have any customers at that point in time. The menu is sort of Americanized greek food, so don't go there if you are looking for something special. NOTE, they do not Accept Discover credit cards. My friend ordered gyro, which was pretty smaller that other gyro sandwiches I've seen. I later found out, that the best option is to get a plate and try multiple different greek foods. Food so good that it'll make you and your coworkers hop in a car for lunch. I feel that's a big deal, as we are in Rosslyn but it's worth the small hike to hit up Astor. The lamb is crazy mouth watering good, although I've never ordered it because I'm too obsessed with the steak and cheese panini here. My coworkers usually fight to get in front of each other in line because they want the chicken. Protip, if you want to make sure you get a half or a quarter go before noon, as there's a lunch rush from Ft. Meyer across the street. Another really delicious thing they have at Astor is their fries. They're the boardwalk kind that are crispy on the outside. Since you get so many fries with the panini combo I usually share mine with the table so everyone can have a few. I usually can't eat them all anyways, and I'm pretty sure one time I ate half the panini and half the fries while taking the rest for dinner later that evening. Parking is pretty abundant, but I should state we always arrive there no later than noon because not only are we starving, but organized. Hmm, today is Tuesday.
