What a change! I have not been to this location in about 20 years, when I had. A buddy that lived in the corner of Union Street. Not that it was bad--there's just been a major facelift. This supermarket was immaculate and spacious. I came in the evening time and there was not many people inside, however, I was able to move around freely, unlike most supermarkets. The ladies at check out were pleasant, too. They were in the midst of conversation but when the lady saw me, she stopped, and greeted me, and rang up my items. Not that I wanted her complete attention, but often time, they will just keep their conversation going, never acknowledge you, and hand you the receipt while looking the other direction. read more

While out on my morning walk in search of somewhere to eat breakfast in the lovely Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, I visited Associated with hopes of purchasing toothpaste. However, little did I know that I would end up purchasing other items rather than toothpaste. The atmosphere felt very peaceful at this little neighborhood supermarket. Along with its peaceful atmosphere, the supermarket is very clean, the shelves very organized, and the aisles had plenty of maneuvering space in-between them. Since I had just completed a workout, I looked for something to replenish! The price for Vitamin water was out of my preferred range, but I always look at the overall fulfillment versus the price, which is why I considered purchasing it with its retail price of $2.29. As I continued shopping, the thought of just eating fruit for breakfast came to mind, so I ended up putting the bottle of Vitamin water back on the shelf. It was then I visited the produce section where I found a mixed fruit bowl which I ended up purchasing as my breakfast. Lemon ginger tea has been a hot item I have looked for as of late on eBay, just waiting to encounter a great price! While headed to the register, I could not help but notice the variation of teas shelved which reminded me of that search. I nearly bought a box of Stash - herbal tea lemon ginger vitality until I saw a box of Bigelow - lemon ginger herbal tea which was 50 cents cheaper than the Stash brand. The price I encountered for toothpaste was a complete turnoff, considering that I would have tossed it in the trash before my flight out of LaGuardia Airport. So, to counter the possibility of bad breath, I ended up purchasing a pack of Trident gum which I ended up chewing on all day, and it is even beneficial while flying. One thing that was different compared to any other shopping experience I have had, was being given a bag that is reusable, and recyclable for many times. I can surely see myself lugging that reusable bag around as my handbag prior to going to the fitness center for my workouts. I would indeed return to Associated when staying in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn because my needs were met, plus it was my only discovery of a place where I could purchase quality food items. Stopped inside of this Associated after an MD appt right around the corner. Breezy, roomy and clean, this may be my new favorite supermarket. Shelves were stocked with fresh food items and there were many great sales and discounts. It's surprising that in such an expensive area of Brooklyn, the prices on several grocery items were much cheaper than in my own neighborhood. I'll definitely be shopping on this side of town at Associated more often. read more

This is my 3rd stop in finding the cheapest grocery store in my neighborhood and alas, like Ctown and Healthy Food, I am also giving this place 4 stars. It was only my first time here last night so I'm going to break down what I noticed from memory. Overall it is the cheapest of the three places - primarily in produce - fresh, and quality is ok. Deli section - most expensive and there aren't a lot of people manning the large counter area in the back. Skip it. The Aisles are pretty narrow and as much as they try to stock up as many different kinds of things such as your common brand name items and organics, your desire to shop dwindles fast. Go in knowing exactly what you want and where it is - you'll be fine. Just check for damaged containers and expiration dates cuz as sheisty as it can be - it's wise to shop economically while being cautious not to food poison yourself. read more

I must admit that I've never actually bought food at this Associated, I've only ordered ice for delivery. Now, you might assume that this would mean that I never actually set foot in the store, but you'd be wrong. You know what happens when you assume; you make yourself look like a jackass, and somewhere a baby kitten dies. Apparently, if you want to get ice delivered, you need an address, because giving them the location of a park is insufficient. Since I didn't have an address, I had to walk over to Associated, and escort the delivery guy (really just a kid with a shopping cart) to the park. In any other situation, I would probably have been irritated. But I needed the ice, and the kid was very nice.* I'm glad I got to check out the store though. From my quick walkthrough, I can report that it seems very pleasant; the aisles are wide, the people are nice, and overall, I found my ice-purchasing excursion to be mostly painless. If you ever need to make things cold, Associated sells 5 lb. bags for $1.69, which is entirely reasonable when you consider the prices other stores have charged me, and fairly steep when you consider it's just very cold water. __________ *Well, he seemed nice. This store does not know how to treat a customer- do not shop here. I had purchased salad ingredients to bring to a friend's for dinner. spending $24.74. When it came time to make the salad, I realized the 2 avacados hadn't been put in my shopping bag. The receipt had disappeared. The next day I walked the 8 blocks back to the store. The cashier I had dealt with wasn't there. They wouldn't consider my case without a receipt., and i was treated very off-hand. Well, they lost a customer over 2 avacados. read more

The lines are always long, not enough cashiers and there's one Hispanic woman in there that always has an attitude about bags or in general. Went in there today this morning and seen her in the middle register. This is my go to grocery store for convenience, and I have to say that I one of the only reasons I might go here. This is like any other neighborhood grocery store you would find in Brooklyn, but I would say that it is a little nicer and bigger. There is a good variety of produce. I try to limit what I buy from this section due to the fact that I have bought certain vegetables here before, and the next day they are completely spoiled. I walked through this section last week, and there were some moldy peaches on the shelf. Like someone mentioned in a precious review, packaged items are pretty safe here, if not a little expensive. Sales are definitely few and far between. They have some interesting items though that you won't be able to find in a Whole Foods or Trader Joes. I love this rose lemonade spritzer they carry in the specialty drinks sections. I will also mention that for a small neighborhood grocery store, the cashiers are always really nice and have excellent customer service. read more

I'm in New York for work and needed to find a grocery store close to my hotel for food and supplies. I was recommended this store as the closest by my hotel staff. I was pretty disappointed. Prices were sky high and there wasn't a lot of choices in items. They only had a handful of k-cup offerings and I couldn't even find prefilled salt shakers! The cashiers here are among the nicest people in all of Brooklyn. I admire their ability to be friendly and keep a smile on their faces, in spite of the clientele and management. But, after just opening yet another moldy loaf of bread, I felt that I had to finally write a review of this grocery store. I've been shoping here for 16 years. I live right down the block. I also shop at a few of the other local spots, I know the area well. This grocery store is the worst. The total worst. Every loaf of bread I buy here turns moldy within 2 days. 50% of the chicken I've ever bought here has smelled bad the next day. Their onions and potatoes are consistantly gouged open, beat up, soft or damp. Tomatoes with mold around the stem. Fruit flies around the bins if you look close. Broken eggs. Over priced everything. I try to avoid shopping there because I know it sucks. But I was in a rush last time I was out and took the risk... but today I went to make a sandwich, with a loaf of bread I bought saturday, and it was moldy, and it just put me over the edge. You know something is good when you get good vibes from it every time you ride/walk past it. Associated is the median of Whole Foods and Safeway, minus the bulk goods section. They're super clean and modern looking. They have a nice selection of produce, but not as extensive as Fairway's. Sure, there's literally nobody working the floors but I enjoy getting in and out of there quickly because I already know what I want. Plus, they're the only place I could find my Imperial spread for baking! When I don't feel like trekking out to Fairway or have the time to wait in the lines at Whole Foods/Trader Joe's, Associated is definitely my quick and no fuss option. read more

I wanted to update my review. I was contacted on Yelp by the manager of the Associated and he explained that they had received several similar complaints about the pasta. Here is part of what he wrote: "Unfortunately, we have had numerous customers return the same exact Bags of elbow pasta. There were numerous bags within the shipment from White Rose (our Product supplier) that had tape covering parts of the bag. We have contacted their shipping department in NJ and explained to them the defects of the bags. They put a hold on all pasta products and checked each box for similar tape on the packages. They apologized and immediately replaced all bags on our shelves. " He offered to refund my money and provided his contact information so I speak with him if I had any problems or questions. So it seems that the issue with the bags of pasta was a problem with thier supplier and not the store itself. And I have to say that I really appreciate being contacted by the store's manager with an apology and an explanation. That's great customer service and I'm giving the store 4 stars now. read more

Here in New Jersey, Associated Supermarkets are regarded as the lowest of the low when it comes to supermarkets. They're sort of like Shop-Wrong, instead of Shop-Rite. I first came here during the summer, when the renovation was still ongoing. You could see that the owners of this particular location were going for something bigger and better. And when I came in this past Thursday night, I was very pleasantly surprised by the outcome. The store still had a very clean appearance, and employees actually said hello, which doesn't occur at most supermarkets. Yes, the aisles are very narrow but the shelves are well-stocked and all items are perfectly arranged. Man, I wished the Associated markets in New Jersey could see this and learn from it. read more

This place has everything if you are in the Parkslope area. Nice deli, with delicious meats, and cheeses. They had some organic produce, and good looking fruits and veges. This is a solid local grocery store. It has a huge selection for a small store (like 40 kinds of milk!) and pretty reliable produce. The deli is friendly and the prices are reasonable. The owners are really sweet guys who accept packages for neighbors and are always happy to help you find something, no matter how busy they are. Post-renovation, they joked that I should have my wedding in the produce aisle because there is now so much room. This is my go-to grocery store. (Note to the rumor mill: Associated did not buy Beso. The people who own Beso also own that building, and are now renting the bottom floor to Associated. Meanwhile, the Beso people re-opened as a taqueria in Prospect Heights. Over the 20 some-odd years I've grown up and lived in Park Slope, specifically a couple of blocks from here, I've seen this place grow. I've seen them go from a 1-storefront, to essentially owning half the block. But, for all the right reasons too. It's a super market, the prices are somewhat reasonable for the neighborhood, and they continue to adapt to the customer's needs. This place used to be a ghetto smelly neighborhood joint, and now the cheese section can rival that of some other non-named establishments. I really have to give it to the owners as this family run business has maintained their ethic this whole time, and been successful. -1 star for the food not being free. What? I actually find this grocery store of better quality than other places around - yes, if you want fancy cheese or fresher (more expensive) produce, go up the street to Union Market, but I find Associated a ton better than the Key Foods a couple of blocks away. There are large aisles, decent produce, a decent selection of regular cheeses, and there seem to be decent deals there (cereal, pasta, cleaning products, ice creams, etc). I've never had an issue with anything going bad (but I also tend to only get perishable items right when I'm going to use them), and their non-perishables haven't seem to be a problem. There are very few checkouts, but honestly, I have never had to wait more than a couple people before getting to the front. I recently moved further from the Key Foods, so now Associated and Key Foods are about the same distance from me, and I'd pick Associated over Key Foods any day. read more

It's so convenient but unfortunately the things I can buy here have dwindled down to packaged foods only. I think there's a food storage issue because on probably 15 occasions this past year I've bought fresh produce that appeared okay but then were completely rotten/moldy. I tried to buy berries again the other day because I literally live next door and just wanted to see if I could find an okay tray and needed them quickly, and everything I opened was completely molded over. This happens consistently. I believe it's a storage issue because I bought bananas that didn't even look ripe yet and then opened them to have them be this gel like consistency like nothing I've ever seen. Staff is really nice and I wish this store could fix this issue. We always go right back in and they refund us but it's weird that the issue is never fixed. read more

While I do most of my shopping at the coop, the associated is my go-to place for some quick basics. It's clean and well stocked with organic and regular groceries, and the people working check-out are *crazy* fast. (I wish they'd school us coop chumps how to do it.) Best selection of Polar seltzers around, and a good selection of hot sauce. Prices are either really low or really high, with nothing in between. Only big drawback is the stench of the meat cooking in the Deli section sometimes. My kid refuses to go in there with me--it's that bad. read more

More expensive than Key Food, cheaper than the bodegas, and they seem to have my two favorite grocery items perpetually on sale. I love a good deal. I love carrot juice. A big bottle of Bolthouse carrot juice (13 servings of vegetables!) here is $4.99 (compared to $6.99-7.99 elsewhere!). 'Nuff said, right? So like a crack addict (actually I'm not sure at all what crack is), I come here whenever my carrot juice supply runs low. Another thing I strongly like (let's reserve the big L word for things that I'm truly passionate about, like carrot juice and the R train) is Chobani yogurt ($1 to $1.50 here). My only complaint is the line can be long, especially when they're bagging stuff for delivery... Do grocery stores not have bag boys anymore? The cashiers generally seem less than excited to be here and indifferent about how you feel. That's okay, I'm not much for small talk anyway, but it makes me wonder sometimes why they're grumpier than the average NYer - do they not get paid above minimum wage? Is the manager psycho? The store itself is always clean, never too crowded, well stocked and well lit. Produce seems decent and I've never seen anything sold here beyond its expiration or sell-by date; they do a good job managing their inventory and putting quality products on the shelves. read more

I love this place. Mainly because its close to me, but also after years of living in the city, it seems insanely cheap, especially considering they seem to have great quality produce. Downside is their meat selection could be a whole lot better. In comparison to other associated locations, its definitely the best. In comparison to the rest of the neighborhood... why are you shopping here.....? I do it too, mostly because its close, but Key Foods on 7th is not too much farther away and much cheaper (though has a very weak produce section). This associated also has practically a nonexistent toiletries/ health/beauty isle. They also have very basic first aid, nothing more. Good luck trying to get sun tan lotion there or anything else other than deoderant and some overpriced tooth brushes. The key foods on 5th or the C-town on 9th are farther but definitely outrank. The food co-op on Union is definitely the way to go, fresh food and a quick turnaround. I give this a two simply because its better than other associated's I've been in, but still, it sucks read more
