Having never had Ethiopian food before I was intrigued by Asmara, and I knew that with Ligaya recommending the place, I'd be ok. The owner is super sweet, and yes she takes her time, so it's best if you go when not in a huge rush. We enjoyed the spinach and ricotta appetizer (mmmm!), some fresh fruit juices (mmm I'm a sucker for mango anything), and a wonderful entree that was half vegetarian and half meat dishes. We had lamb, beef, chicken, lentils, potatoes and a bunch of other things I wasn't exactly sure what they were, but they were tasty. My body is still warming up to spicy food, so what was a real plus about Asmara was that the dishes were full of wonderful flavors but not overwhelmingly spicy. I really loved that we were able to sit at one of the traditional tables and enjoy the food somewhat authentically - minus the neighboring Russian couple constantly on their cell phones. Plenty has been said already about Asmara and it's all pretty on point. I would put Asmara in the "pretty good, but not amazing" camp of Ethiopian food, which still means that you should still go there any time you want to indulge your desire to eat piles of delicious slop with your hands. The atmosphere of the restaurant is quite comfortable: low lighting, soft music, and some wicker seat/table setups (though more standard seating is also available). One thing I will note is that service is quite slow during low-traffic times. I assume there's exactly one waitress and one chef serving the whole restaurant during off-peak times. That's a little problematic when it comes to ordering combination platters of 4 or 5 items (which I recommend, by the way), requiring a lot of prep time. If you're not in a hurry and you'd like to pig out sans-utensils and still feel classy doing it, check out Asmara. read more

This was my first shot at Ethiopian and it was fine. I thought it seemed a lot like Indian food only not as good. The injera bread is probably an acquired taste but I found it very sour and a little overwhelming. I got the vegetarian platter, which was a nice way to sample the different offerings. Overall it was tasty, but nothing special. Some things were pretty bland and a couple were way too spicy -- I was missing the middle ground where you get a kick of spice but can still actually taste your food. The waitress was extremely nice and the traditional table/seating was different (they also have "regular" tables if you're not into that). It was expensive ($16-17 per person) and not really worth it for what you get, but still a pleasant experience overall. read more

Six of us came here for dinner on a Saturday night. We made reservations 45minutes before dinner and were seated pretty quickly when we got to the restaurant. The food is very good... probably the best in Boston because there are so few Ethiopian restaurants to compare this one to. Asmara is definitely better than that other Ethiopian place on Mass Ave near Porter Square. We ordered the meat combination and veggie combination and two bottles of the honey wine (I was skeptical at first, but it is very fragrant and has a unique taste. You can't get this stuff anywhere else in Boston, so you should try it while you're here). They allowed us to pick the meat-veggie ratio for the table, which we greatly appreciated. We asked for 2/3s meat and 1/3 veggie, which I think was the right decision. The brown-reddish meat (beef?) with pepper flakes is very spicy but flavorful, so you should figure out what it's called and order it. They had Ethiopian music videos playing on the television. I ended up watching a lot of them during dinner. I think the women's moves are generally much more difficult than those of the men. The women in the video do these neck and shoulder shakes that are impossible to imitate. Anyway, yes, I will be back. read more

I went here this past weekend for my birthday dinner. I've been wanting to try Ethiopian for awhile, but, this being my first time, I have absolutely no point of comparison, unlike some of the other reviewers. The five of us split a bottle of wine. I'm surprised that a previous poster said they charged everyone by the glass--they were out of our original choice, so the server suggested a South African red and brought the bottle out to us. Only one of us had ever eaten there before, and he suggested we just get whatever combination the server offered. We went for the recommended combination, with a slight variation; since we had three vegetarians out of five diners, the server offered to reverse the ratio of meat to veggie dishes. The food arrived on a giant platter, piled in sections on top of a spongy bread. We also were given a plate with individual pieces of this bread piled on it to tear apart and scoop our food up with. Everything was delicious. A few things, like the spinach, were pretty much spice-free, but they were great mixed with a little of the spicy sauce or another dish. This definitely would not be for the less adventurous or more germ-phobic eater (although they do give you hot towels to clean your hands prior to bringing out your dinner, and wetnaps with the check). read more

If the super friendly folks who run Asmara would let me live here, I would. I'd curl up beneath those wonderful traditional tables and drink tea, eat food, and then drink more tea. It would be amazing. There's nothing about this restaurant I don't love. It is a bit pricey, so we end up going mostly for special occasions, but the food is so good I'd pay twice what they ask. Their specialty tea is incredible (probably even better than the food), as is their house-made honey wine. We always eat the vegetarian combo and every time we try to identify our favorites within it, but it's just too hard. It's all amazing. The food is really spicy, but that's how it should be -- it's the one place we've eaten since moving here where we feel like we're actually eating spicy food. They leave water for you, which is great, and the staff are among the nicest you'll find anywhere. They're funny and remember you and are so friendly. read more

Well, there are two ways of looking at Asmara; you could get the same dish for a tenth the price in Eritrea, but the airfare would set you back a coupla thou. Considering the modest preparation, the price is steep (e.g. $2.50 for a warm can of Coke and a glass of ice); I walked out $23 lighter for a vegetarian combo lunch with said Coke. Ouch. Actually, it almost cost me considerably more because I hemmed-and-hawed for so long before deciding to drop a Jackson for a simple lunch that the parking meter had expired before I finished eating and some laser-eyed "maid" was racing me to my car. Still, Ethiopian/Eritrean cuisine is a nice change of pace and Asmara prepares it very well - though for my tastes, the best and worst Ethiopian restaurants both get 8 out of 10 on the taste scale, whether on this continent or in Africa (albeit in west and in south, not in my experience authentically on the horn-of-). Too, it seems this ilk eatery is uniformly high-priced - considering the similarity to Indian (esp. southern) - twice the price for the same foodstuffs prepared with only subtle differences. I'll settle far more often for sag paneer with chapati, but come here again when my wallet's overflowing. read more

Everyone should experience Ethiopian/Eritrean food at least once in their lives...and if you go to Asmara, you'll have to do it again and again! I was introduced to Asmara years ago and I was blown away by the tender meats, flavorful spice combinations and vinegar flat-bread. I went back the other day for the first time in years and the food continues to amaze! I recommend the combination plate to try a bit of everything! read more

Delicious. Amazing. We've been here a few times and every time the food is fresh, hot, spicy, authentic & intoxicating. And the service is very quick and very professional. Couldn't recommend this restaurant more. Five stars! read more

The food was good, although it didn't fill me up the way this sort of food normally does (because it is SO GOOD that I must eat EVERYTHING -- except for that tomato salad), possibly because less bread came with it. Sad, because oh, do I love me some injera. I like Addis' food (and options) better, and the service here was pretty bad, as there was ONE waitress/server/hostess/etc for the whole place, which was filling up fast by the time we got there. There was a long wait for everything, including the bill. I think I'll stick to the other place, but it's possible they were having an off day. read more

This place is ok. I wouldn't really recommend it for good Ethiopian food. Addis Red Sea is far better. The boy and I actually went here for lunch one day, just as they opened. The service was super slow even though we were the only ones in there. When we got our meal, neither of us were impressed. The injera bread was way too sour and didn't have the right texture to hold up the food. A couple of the meats we had were ok while the others were just blah. Considering this was the boy's first time trying Ethiopian, I kind of regret taking him to this place. But we were in Central Sq and he was willing to try something new. I should have held out and waited till we were in the South End. He would have appreciated the food a heck of a lot more. read more

I've been meaning to try Asmara for a very long time, and I have to say that I was unfortunately a bit disappointed. Three friends and I ordered the a few portions of the meat combination and veggie combination, which both came with an assortment of small dishes. While these were fine, no dish particularly stood out. I also found the darker injera, which is a large component of the meal experience, to be lacking. It was more sour and more firm than the typical injera, and I didn't enjoy it as much. I don't claim to be an expert in Ethiopian food, but I've had Ethiopian food that I've enjoyed more for less money elsewhere. I don't think I'd choose to return anytime soon, but I still left full and happy. read more

This authentic restaurant offered amazing Ethiopian Eritrean food. As is usual with Ethiopian food, finding vegan options was not a problem. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. What I loved about this place were the traditional tables/baskets on which the shared platter is served. I also enjoyed that they described some of the history of Eritrea on the menu, as well as some of its traditions. The food was a little more pricey than most places in Cambridge, but it was excellent quality and they served large portions. read more

This restaurant is way over priced for the portions and quality of food. I ordered the chicken entree and it was just a small plate of shredded chicken and nothing else for $16.95. It didn't come with any rice or bread, just a side portion size of chicken. A can of coke is $3.95. But what upset me the most was that while I was eating the waitress came over twice to ask how everything was and asked if I was still working on my meal. I told her I was still hungry and eating my meal. She then asked if she can pack it to go and I told her I don't want my food to disappear (as a jokingly way of saying that I am still working on it). This waitress literally said, "it's not going to disappear, I am just going to pack it to go" and then took my plate! Just like that she fregg'n took my plate and walked away! I was super shocked and didn't say anything because I didn't want to make a fuss in front of my friends. But, what she didn't realize was that it was my first and only meal for the whole day. I understand that it was the end of the night and that she wanted to go home, but I was still very hungry when she took my plate away. So I ended up going to 7-Eleven across the street and spent more money for snacks. read more

Took a big group here on Saturday night. Called at 6pm and managed to get an 830 table for 10 people. Our group was still trickling in at 850pm but our hostess / waitress was incredibly gracious and made us feel very much at home with honey wine, knowledgeable recommendations and a warm, friendly attitude. We ordered the group platter ($18.95 for shrimp, chicken, beef, two vegetables, salad and injera) and it arrived within 10 minutes. Before the food, we each received a hot towel to clean our hands with. The food was delicious -- not too heavy or greasy - filling but healthy. A few of the dishes were spicy (in a good way) but easy to balance out with the salad and lentils. The dessert menu was a little less impressive (not particularly authentic or imaginative) but we ordered a few things nonetheless. We also ordered Ethiopian coffee, which was pretty great, and the waitress did the signature high pour from an earthen pot. The tea, however was not so great. In sum: this is a homely / cosy type of place. There's a tv playing foreign films in the background and the crowd is mostly couples, families with kids and grad students. There's no trend factor here and no real liquor. The honey wine is good (and home-made!) but more of a dessert thing and it also costs $27 a bottle (!) We paid $40 each including tip. So.. take your friends, bring your appetite and make sure you plan a pit stop at a bar afterwards if you're planning on a big night. read more

I was in Boston for all of 2 nights, and made a bee line right over to Cambridge to try Asmara, because I love the one in Portland Maine. Turns out its not the same restaurant, but the owners are cousins! Tables are the traditional round wicker tablesl. Food comes out pretty fast and was good. I had two meat dishes, one tibs but I forget name of the other, though it was a meat stew. I found it more peppery then berbere-y though, which isn't my preference but it still still very good. It was very flavorful but not spicy. none of this stopped me from eating the entire thing. I was happy and full the rest of the night. They also make their own honey wine, which was less sweet then the commercial variety (this may vary based on batch though). read more

Asmara is one of a handful of Eritrean restaurants that I have eaten at and it is quite good in comparison. The place is very clean, the option to sit in Western tables or traditional seating is available. And the wait staff was very kind and knowledgeable on the menu and the Eritrean culture in general. The mother (I presume) came out once the tables filled up a bit, which was nice to see. In general, the place was hopping after 9:30pm, which is a good sign. For the food, first of all, I loved the fact that they actually used real fruit in their juices and they didn't add extra sugar - fantastic! Thank you for making such a delicious option for drinks. We ended up ordering the stuffed tomatoes to start and #21 which is the stewed string beans, cauliflower, carrots, etc. The stuffed tomatoes were surprisingly tasty - stuffed with rice and a nice Berbere (slightly spiced) all on top of a bed of greens which was on top of injera (full Teff @ 95% - which is another great thing about Asmara, they give you the option to go full Teff @ 95% or 50/50 with wheat; not many places offer that; *btw, they source their Teff from the Teff Co www.teffco.com/). The main dish was nice and tangy - which worked well with the injera (again 95% Teff) and it was served with a few lentils too, which worked to balance the sour/tangy flavor in the main dish. I had walked by this place for a number of months wondering if I would ever step inside and I am glad I did - I loved the meal and will no doubt return. I'm giving them 3 stars, which is a high mark in my rating system (I rarely give 5's) and 4's are for the truly exceptional establishments. My only request from a comfort level would be to turn off the A/C - it was a beautiful summer night, about 71 degrees and breezy. read more

Asmara is one of my favorite places in Boston. Their injera is fresh, soft, and delicious, everything is exquisitely spiced, and the food is delicious. My guess is that people giving Asmara negative reviews are just not that into Ethiopian food, which is fine. I can't claim to be an authority -- I've never been to Ethiopia, and outside of Addis Red Sea, this is the extent of my background with the cuisine. If you're a food-lover, this is another excellent make-or-break date spot: if your date can't handle the whole "eating with the hands" thing, he or she probably ain't gonna work out. If I could get injera in lieu of silverware with every meal, I probably would. I'd eat cereal with it instead of a spoon. I'd eat cheesecake with it instead of a fork. I'd spread peanut butter with it instead of a knife. Everyone should try eating at an Ethiopian restaurant, and Asmara is totally the place to do it. Great chicken. Great beef. Great vegetable dishes. Great everything. read more

Gluten free? DO NOT EAT HERE! Minchet Abish, Absolutely delicious... However, teff flower, used in injera is usually dark and gluten free. Their injera is delicious but light in color. I got so sick. So sad to say I'm never coming back. read more

I have only tried Ethiopian/African once before and I thought I would give it a try again. Other review say to try the honey wine. It wasn't to my liking, but I had to try it. GOt the boneless chicken, Atkilt Begeeh - Yebeg Atkilt, and Asmara Tibsy - Asmara Tibs. All were good; well flavored. Of course you have to get used to the tart, sponge like bread you eat the food with, it's good. I always enjoy eating with my hands. read more

Asmara was my first experience with Ethiopian food years ago, so I feel very nostalgic about it. I re-visited it last night and my fond feelings resurfaced. Two quibbles about this place: it's sort of pricey and the atmosphere isn't as nice as Addis Red Sea in the South End. But I've always managed to get treated to dinner here (must be my dashing good looks), and I do think it's helpful to have the choice between sitting at the traditional basket table or a conventional Western-style table. I prefer the basket table hands down, but the other tables are good if you're dining with people feeling iffy about the experience (e.g., some parents). I always get the vegetarian combo platter here, because it's a sampling of every vegetarian dish on the menu. It was a little odd that the potatoes and carrots in one dish were cut into huge chunks when the other major ingredient, cabbage, was finally shredded. Still, it was tasty, along with the other chickpea, lentil, and spinach dishes. The tomato salad in the middle of the platter is great especially if you've just eaten something with too much spicy bebere sauce (which is your own fault, since they don't mix it into the food but leave it for you to add in at your discretion). I've never completely cleaned a platter, even though my dining companions and I are always hearty eaters. The honey wine is smooth and not overly sweet, and the fruit juices are freshly blended here and not gussied up with unnecessary sweetener. Even though I've been to other Ethiopian restaurants, I still like the service here the best. I feel really tranquil after eating here. And very full. read more

Yummy Ethiopian food in Cambridge. Very friendly service.

Very good food. It had been so long since I've had Ethiopian. We got the meat sampler platter which was good. My only complaint is there was none of the house made cheese that I'm used to getting at other Ethiopian restaurants and that the kifto wasn't on the sampler platter. But everything else was fine, good food, good service. read more

I remember coming here years ago when I was in highschool. We took the T out to Central and went here for lunch, thinking we were all hip and whatnot because we were eating Ethiopian food. In turned out at the time I wasn't nearly as worldly or interesting as I'd thought, as I found the whole system of eating and sour-tasting bread off-putting. Give me a fork and a bland piece of Italian loaf any day. But recently I went back, knowing that my tastes had evolved a bit since then and I'm glad I did. I thought the food was yummy and found the bread a piquant counterpoint to the entrees. The communal way of eating is great for a group. The atmosphere leaves a little to be desired, but I have to say that the cheery waitress who was manning all the tables in the restaurant created a convivial atmosphere. We got the Mes Honey Wine which came in a polka-dotted, unlabeled bottle. It was festive, but frankly not that great. I'd recommend spending the extra five bucks and getting a Gewurtztraminer (which will definitely go perfectly with the food there)...although the polka-dotted bottle was quite fun. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to go back, but I'd unreservedly recommend it. Have fun! read more

It is a good restaurant but definitely not worth the hype. I didn't find food, price or service to be exceptionally great. It is decent enough and comparable to other Ethiopian restaurants in the area. The ambiance is good and the server was very pleasant and helpful. The service is pretty fast and there wasn't much wait time (I went there on Friday evening). PS: Menu says "FRESH" fruit juice and I confirmed before ordering. We saw them making the juice and the fruits used are "FROZEN" fruits put into blender with water. It definitely did not taste like a fruit drink, it was just a 'cold-drink' :) read more

Almost did not come here since some of the reviews commented on the food being bland. Did not find that to be the case with the meat combo! The serving size was a bit smaller than I've had at other Ethiopian places, but it filled me up in the end (and I have a big appetite!) Another review said that you could only order the combos for two people... I had no problem ordering for one! read more

I'd say this is not a place for vegetarians. Meat lovers will delight, though. Try to come with about four people so you can share and try out more stuff. The meats are very tasty but could be a challenge for those not possessed with a strong stomach. If you're feeling a bit adventurous, try the kifto, the raw steak tartare: it is de-li-cious. One thing you might not want to try is the honey wine, as its really really sweet. Another thing I like about this place is the down to earth feel. Its not pretentious. Apart from the wacky tables (which are very useful because eating can be messy) everything feels very homy and relaxed. read more

Going to Asmara, I really didn't know what to expect. I started out with Asmara tea which was very nice. It's tea with cinnamon, cloves, and cardamon. It reminded me a bit of chai tea in that it was slightly spicy. David had the dark Asmara beer which was actually very nice and reminded me of a lighter Guinness. We ordered a vegetable combination and a meat combination. In the vegetable combo, I liked the lentils, chickpeas, spinach, and cabbage. There was another pureed vegetable on the plate that was a little too sour for my taste. In the meat combo the lamb and the chicken were the best in flavor. I would say to avoid the beef because it really didn't have any taste to it except for the sour part. They start you off with some warm wet towels just in case you forgot to wash your hands. The bread that you eat with can be described best by saying that it seems like a cross between a crepe and a pancake. It was a lot soggier than I thought it would be. I do like the ambiance in that you are eating out of a large wicker basket and the food is served on a large colorful plate. As for spiciness, we weren't really asked whether or not we would like the items spicy but there were a few items on the plate with a real kick. Overall it was a new interesting experience and although I wouldn't necessarily come back because I didn't enjoy the flavor of food that doesn't mean that you shouldn't. read more

I just finished what would be the most arduous meal I've eaten in Cambridge. From the most sour injera to the driest lentils to the complete lack of variety in flavor, Asmara challenged my palate on many unpleasant levels. Their fresh juices are delicious though. The service was very good as well. Our waitress was especially nice and without meaning to, she snapped her fingers to get our attention while we were conversing and didn't look up at her. Then she exclaimed "Oh! I'm sorry!" and we all cracked up. It was so cute. It makes me sad to rate a place with good service so low but Addis Red Sea is definitely easier to like on the spot (see earlier reviews). read more

Food- Asmara is one of my favorite Ethiopian/ Eritrean places in the Boston area. They still serve brown injera (if asked) instead of the white injera that some other restaurants are doing lately. The wats are tasty and the dishes don't all blend together into one flavor. And they aren't afraid to add a little heat. Service- Service here is friendly and a lot better (note- not as slow) than both Addis Red Sea locations (though the Cambridge Addis closed right?). If you are looking at ambiance though for a date or something, the ambiance at Asmara could do better. It's not as warm and homey feeling as Addis. read more

Really good Ethiopian food served on traditional tables, and with customary warm, wet cloths prior to eating with your hands. I had noticed that some people complained about the service being slow here, which is true if you compare it to the typical all-American joint, with fast and furious service. Sit back, enjoy your dinner company, and relax, and you will be attended in time. The lack of immediate service adds to this restaurant's authenticity, with only one hostess/server and one chef/server on a busy weekend night. My only complaint about Asmara is that the ingeria bread is slightly thicker than I would prefer. read more

Went there on a Friday night. We had to wait a good 15 minutes before I got the server/receptionist attention to ask to get seated (there were empty tables). After we got seated and looked through the menu and decided what we wanted to get, a waitress came with water. I asked her if I may order now, she murmured something back in Spanish and went away, I guess she doesn't speak English? I think the only English phrase she knew was "excuse me" and she was saying that when she wanted me to move my hand or something to reach my water glass, and the tone she used came off as very rude, although I know its because of language barrier, I doubt it was intended. There were only 2 servers in the restaurant so I tried to get attention of the other one that seemed to speak English. Took us 15 minutes to get her attention finally we were able to order. I think the most popular dishes on the menu are meat combo and veggie combo (about $17 each). There were 4 of us and the portions looked huge, so when I said I wasn't that hungry so can we get 3 combos for 4 people, she refused to accept that. She said that there is a policy on Friday night everybody needs to order or something like that. I was like okay sure lets go for 4 orders then! It's not her fault but I think it's a stupid policy. The food came out pretty fast, the food was okay, not bad, but I think the customer service is what made me a star way from the review. Every time we wanted to ask the waiter for something we had to wait long and try hard to get her attention. I understand that it was a busy Friday night but why can't they just have more servers since its expected to be busy? Also having one waitress who doesn't speak a word of English is probably not a good idea. Overall, decent overpriced food with okay service. read more

Asmara Restaurant - Ethiopian Near Me - Cambridge, Massachusetts

Well, I have mixed reviews of Asmara. First - location, not being a local, I didn't realize what area this restaurant was in - not the cute date night place where you can walk around in before and after dinner, kind of place... Second - ambiance of restaurant - we got there early 6:30 and there weren't many people there and the place looked sort of shabby - no ambiance to speak of. Once it got darker though, they turned the lights down and put candles on the table, much much better! You can sit outside if you like to eat with the homeless people walking by... Third - the hostess and waitress was soooo nice! She gave us plenty of time to order and in between courses, joked with us, etc...only at the end of the night when the place was packed and she was still the only person doing most of the work, did the service get a little slow, but that was okay! Fourth - the food...some was fabulous - the stuffed pepper appetizer, oh my goodness! The beef was spicy and so flavorful, I would definitely order this again! We got the meat platter and then added an order of the spicy scallops. We loved the lamb and scallops (scallops were a tad bit overcooked, but the seasonings on both were good!), the beef was a little dried out, the chicken was fine as was the veggie. Fifth - the injera....I thought was really tasty! Not too sour, but then again, I am a huge fan of sour in general so maybe that was it. We didn't get any dessert either. Later that night though, I did feel ill, not sure it was from the food or not, but just had to share that! I am not sure I would go back on date night, if I were in that area and wanted to eat, I would certainly go back and eat there but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back to that neighboorhood. read more

Overall, pretty fantastic. I think we must come here a lot, because my friend and I always order the same things, and they always remember us for it. I love the spicy lamb, the spicy chicken, the yellow sauced chicken, the spicy lentils, the split peas, the spicy tomato salad (yetimatim fitfit), and the secret spinach! The service is great--attentive, but not too much. There's rarely a wait and that's cause y'all are missing out. read more

Tasty food! Warm service! Ordered the lamb dish with red peppers . It Was a relatively large sized portion with 2 injeras. Was super delicious and flavorful and way better than the lamb dish I had at other Ethiopian places. I was simply blown away! Just a heads up, it is slightly spicy and not "Americanized bland". The service was very warm and the restaurant nice and cozy ! Slightly pricy but definitely worth it!! Ordered the traditional coffee to try it out but it just wasn't for me. Maybe I'll try the tea next time! read more

Came out of the cold today and had wonderful hot tea along with a full selection of vegetarian items that ranged from tangy to sweat to spicy. The food was soooo good. I recommend the vegatrian platter. Food is served family style and you eat with your hands using the bread that is similar to a rice pancake. The owner served us. She was very personable. I will be back again. read more
