If you're looking for greasy, big-portioned food, you've come to the right place. Service was excellent; the waiter was patient and checked in on us often, even offering to replace one of our orders when he realized he made a mistake. Nothing to complain about here. On to the good stuff: the portions, as i mentioned earlier, are HUGE. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but the burgers/sandwiches are easily the size of my head. A lot of bang for your buck, and pretty damn tasty too. I had the Chipotle Chicken Sandwich and highly recommend it to any others. Just the right combination of cheese, bacon, chicken, and chipotle sauce - and I might add, it tastes even better after a night in the fridge. Ashley's is hands down my favorite bar in Ann Arbor. It's not the best for going out and trying to meet new people, but it's awesome for going out with groups of people and throwing back a few beers. Beer: The have the widest and best beer selection out of any bar I have ever been to. After trying almost their entire menu, my go-to beer is Bellaire Brown. If any of your friends complain about the cost, explain it to them this way: Most of the beers have higher than average (like 2x) alcohol content. So your paying less than double the price for at least 2x the alcohol. Also if anyone in your group doesn't like Beer, they have really good alcoholic ciders. Food: Pub fries with a side of ranch dressing are the perfect cure for drunk munchies. The pizza and burgers are also pretty good, but usually I'm just snacking on fries when I go. read more

I was hesitant to try Ashley's because of some of the negative reviews on here, but I'm very happy I tried it. I'm a graduate student and there are times when I hate how noisy, crowded and cliquey most bars around AA tend to be (especially Charley's, ugh). There are times when that can be fun, but there are also times you just want to catch up with friends and hang out. Ashley's is like that. It's very relaxed, very slow paced - a great place to casually meet and hang out. You will never have to yell into the person's ear next to you to be heard, which usually drives me crazy. If you want a club scene to go dancing or meet people - this is not the bar for you. Drinks wise, they have a huge beer menu with lots of exotic types to try - it's much bigger and (in my opinion) better than local breweries, like AA Brewing Company. Not all of the drinks were hits, but it was fun to try, and the prices were very reasonable. It turns out I really love the Belgian beer with clover in it - I never would have known that because I'd never had a chance to try it. Ashley's also has bar food that is way above normal. My friends got the curry fries, which looked like baby food but tasted really, really good. I got the pesto bread, which was not what I was expecting. It was a huge hunk (like a full loaf) of salty white bread with salty cheese and salty tomato sauce. I would not recommend that particular item, but they have a lot of great stuff to choose from. I downgraded Ashley's on the service, as most people do, although it wasn't *that* bad. I had one waiter who was really rude to me - we had a group of 5 at a booth for 4, so he grabbed me a chair to sit in by the table. That's fine, but then he came back to scold me for taking up the aisle! Our primary waiter was extremely busy the whole night, so we only got to grab him every 20-30 minutes. When we did flag him down he was really patient and knowledgeable about the drink menu, which I appreciated. Good hang out place. Interesting music choices but definitely to my taste. Top 40 pop chart music... Taylor Swift, Bieber, Beyoncé were a few I heard while hanging out there. Drinks: full bar option and great beer selection for both draft and bottled. I was able to get some of my West Coast favorite on draft such as Ballast Point and Sierra Nevada. Food: we just got the pesto fries to snack on. They were recommended by the waiter. Fries covered in cheese with pesto sauce drizzle on top of it. It's more of a chill feel, no dress code, less college age kids crowd. I would probably give it a 3.5 out of 5. Decent but nothing stands out. At first their beer tour seemed daunting but I am so happy to be doing this! I have discovered so many delicious beers! And mead (Viking's Blood, a must try!) Service is generally great, with pretty laid back people that are super happy to recommend very delicious beer options but, unfortunately, a couple that act like they would rather be doing anything else besides dealing with customers. Fortunately 9 times out of 10 we get to deal with waiters / waitresses that are super nice and have amazing suggestions. I know this place has been here forever but---OMG STILTON FRIES!! I'm absolutely obsessed with these right now. Try the bacon/cheddar/chive if the stilton is too stinky for you. It's a worthy successor. Besides having the most magnificent on-tap and in-bottle beer selection this side of...well, wherever...they have Ace Pear Cider on tap! I've recently become addicted to this stuff, thanks to one of my Yelp-ful friends. If beer is not your thing, fear not, they have plenty of good scotch to choose from (and scotch "flights"). One of these days...sigh. As far as ambiance, there isn't much. The music teleports you to frat parties gone by. The tables have suffered the forks and knives of impatient drunk youth. I have to say, Ashley's is pretty darn good. I had only been here once, quite a few years ago, until my recent two Monday night trivia excursions. The beer list is fantastic. From local to obscure, Ashley's got every taste in beer covered. I like hoppy, so the IPA selection is perfect. My trivia teammate is into everything including sour beers (which turn me off) and has been able to find several new favorites. I'd give them a five for beer except some beers taste distinctly of lines that need to be cleaned. While the number of taps is impressive, attention to details like line-cleaning is imperative. If the crowd makes it hard to find the time, cut down on the number of taps. There's no need for that taste at a place that offers such awesome beer. The food is another story and gets a five. Hands down. I've had a few things including the Stilton fries, black bean burger (but without guacamole and ranch... that's a combo I just can't get my head around, sorry), and Georgia Reuben. Mind. Blowing. Good. So why only three stars? Well, because beer and food aside, there are some things about Ashley's that have to be fixed. First, the ladies room is disgusting. Like I have considered sneaking into another establishment disgusting. Or maybe peeing in a nearby alley disgusting. Paper towels everywhere, standing water. Ugh. Absolutely gross. I'm tempted to look up their latest inspection but imagine it would keep me from coming back. The other thing is that one of the hostesses we've met is the rudest, most miserable human being in the food service industry. Well, except for, possibly, that one dude at Zingerman's. The waitstaff is awesome, attentive and friendly. This chick? Not so much. Why do I have a problem with that? Because she is often the first person you meet coming through the door. Don't get me wrong. I will continue coming here, recommending it to friends and kicking ass at trivia but I try to be as honest as possible in my reviews. Ashley's is the Willy Wonka of bars. There are 50+ beers to choose from at one time. If that causes your palms to sweat just reading that sentence, no worries. You can order a beer flight and sample four beers and then pick the one that works the best. I recently started school at Michigan, and this bar has become our second home. We come here a lot. It does get a bit confusing when we invite our friend Ashley to come... In any case, this is a great bar for beer. There are plenty of beers on draft, probably almost a hundred different varieties. Unfortunately, they haven't updated their menu in a long time, so several of the beers that are listed are unavailable. More than once, I've placed an order, only to have the waiter come back and inform me that they no longer had that draft in stock. It's pretty disappointing when I've spent the last five minutes combing through the menu finding that one beer I want. In addition to their beer, their scotch selection is great, and they serve some decent mixed drinks as well. But I'm not going to lie, beer is definitely the star of the show here. I'm going to take a moment and go off on a tangent to address those of you that don't like beer. I hate being blunt, but the truth is, it's impossible to not like beer. (Unless your allergic to gluten or something, in which case--I'm sorry for your loss.) Chances are, you just haven't found the right one yet. The nice part about coming to a bar that specializes in beer is that the waiters and bartenders are very knowledgeable, and they'll probably be able to point you to a few brews to try. Don't be shy about asking for samples either, since most bartenders are eager to share their joy and passion in beer. In any case, when you combine good beer with good food and good company, you've got the perfect recipe for a good night. And, I've certainly had my share of good nights here at Ashley's. read more

If exotic, microbrewed, or just-plain good beer is your thing, then Ashley's is definitely a must-visit. The largest tap and bottle selection I've ever seen (I think they advertise like 80+ taps and 100+ bottles), and I've never had a bad keg. Don't expect to see Bud or Miller Lite among the dozens of taps here, aside from Labatt, Blue Moon, and some Sam Adams selections, it's pretty much all micro or imported. For that reason, it's a little expensive (expect to pay around $5/pint), but it's worth it. This place has introduced me to some great beers that I probably would have never experienced, such as a Milk Stout (they had one on the Rotating Taps a few weeks back, and it was fantastic) and the Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA (at $18/bottle, it's too expensive for anything but a special occasion, but if you try it you will be wowed, both with the robust flavor and the 20%+ ABV). When I don't want to spend too much, the Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA, brewed in Michigan, never disappoints at $4.50/pint. They do offer a full food menu as well, and while it's not fantastic, it's definitely better than standard bar fare. The only downside is the service, which is often slow and occasionally a bit, uh, curt. But hey, it's a bar, and for one with their offerings, I'm willing to deal with it. They also offer a wide selection of whiskeys, if that's your thing. I'd highly recommend the Caol Ila, up; it stands out among the twelves. (Though beware, if you're not at the bar, "up" will sometimes be interpreted as "neat", so be specific.) Finally, they have DJs in the Underground (downstairs) on Thursday nights (and maybe others as well?), some of whom are pretty good, and usually accompanied by a few Underground-specific drink specials. read more

Yeah you know they've got a lot of beer, and it's good, but the food's just ehh. The thing I really liked were there bathrooms though. You go downstairs and it transforms into some sort of cave, you'd think you were in the flintstones meets the jetsons with the indoor plumbing inside the ancient ruins of the basement. The place is great, unfortunately we ran into a little bit if dishonest service. Bringing in a large group we expected limited seating options, when asking about an empty 6 top in the rear I got the curt response of "people are sitting there." I walked back and the table was free. The server 'Outta or Ada' informed us that someone was going to be there. I was unaware reservations were possible here. Looks like it was an inside job, good to have friends. As a serious craft beer lover, I just love Ashley's. The tap list is pretty insane, including plenty of variety in any style you could possibly want. It's basically a book! They often have really unique and special brews. I've been there for a Founders KBS vertical tasting, which was so much fun! I loved tasting the different years side by side to see the variation. I was also there for the Founders CBS release. There was a huge crowd and we had to wait quite a while to finally find seats. However, definitely worth it! I had been wanting to try CBS for a long time and Ashley's seemed like the best place to do it. Aside from the special tappings, they have tons of interesting beers that rotate constantly. Plenty of Michigan beers, but also plenty from all over the world. I just love going there to try new beers. They also have a great happy hour, which includes $4 Michigan drafts. It even goes all day on Sundays. I cannot say that I've tried much of their food, but it seems to be pretty classic pub food. Greasy, but sometimes what you're craving after a few beers. I've always had good experiences with the bartenders as well. They are friendly and willing to help find a good beer, with recommendations and tastes. Like everyone and their dog has said, the beer selection here is pretty unbeatable. I've been to Ashley's upwards of ten times and I'm just barely getting my feet wet in their beer menu. Every waiter I've had has known his stuff - I like having them choose a beer for me because they've always got something new going on and I haven't been let down yet. I enjoyed the food here - I certainly wouldn't come here just to eat, but the food I've tried has been standard bar food fare and has been perfectly acceptable for munching on in between larger-than-necessary gulps of the Bell's beer de jour. If you want better food, go to Arbor Brewing Company, but it's definitely not as cozy and it'll cost you a little more. Beer, however, is what Ashley's does best. It's one of my favorite haunts in the area, so if you're ever downtown and need a pint, head on over. read more

You'll get pretty drunk just trying beers... I have been a patron of Ashley's for years. I remember when I first came to Ann Arbor at the ripe age of 21. I essentially had never had access to different kinds of beer (I'm from PA where you have to buy beer by the case and as a broke college student, that means nothing but PBR and beast served at parties. Yuengling is the only "craft" beer in the price range.) Ashley's helped form my palette. I will always fondly remember my time It's always the meeting place for my friends and colleagues. It's ALWAYS packed, loud, and will always be a required stopping point whenever I visit Ann Arbor, despite it's quirks. Everyone I know has sort of a love/hate relationship. Those who are more in tune with their feelings than mundane issues like terrible service, extremely mediocre/inconsistent food (except the Stilton fries. yum.) lean towards love. The restaurant its self is slowly decaying. Last year, for almost the entire year, the women's restaurant was non functioning. I'm happy to report that after a year of living in another city, it's back online (though you still have to squeeze yourself in next to the exposed pipes). Another time, the internet was out and they couldn't process credit card orders, but of course no one had cash... The waitress said that waiting for the machines to come back online was required, but the last bus for home was leaving in 20 minutes........... so the resolution was to write down what was owed with promises that the diners would return the next day and pay off the bills. This seems like an interesting way to do business, but surprisingly, ever person involved returned to settle the bill the next day. My most recent visit was with a group of 6 people on a Friday afternoon in August. We were seated almost immediately (this will probably not be your experience if you try this after Labor Day). The server seemed a little new at his job (or just not the best at it) but when you're with a large group of friends and everyone gets the beer they've ordered, you stop caring after a few glasses. The food came out hot and although my burger was on the underdone side, I was pretty happy with it. But seriously - don't go here for just the food. Go here for the beer. read more

I'm a fan. The menu is really extensive and next time I go in I swear I'm going to start their beer tour (I've been putting this off for a while, trying 100 different kinds is daunting). Despite what the other reviews have said, my service has always been good. I really like the food, especially the specialty fries. Two good ones are the curry chicken and the bacon cheddar fries. I've gotten burgers and sandwiches, and everything is tasty. Better than the food at the Brown Jug or Charley's for sure. The decoration is cool- it makes for a very casual environment and relaxed feel. The only complaint I have is the music, which is completely random and consists of hip hop and heavy metal, with the occasional oldie thrown in there. The crowd consists of a little bit of everyone-- grad students, undergrad students, older townies from the area, professors and other professionals. It really has something to offer everyone and ends up being a great place to meet friends for the night! read more

My disclaimer is that this review is based solely on their beer selection and not on the food. Ashley's is one of the best beer bars I've been to this side of New York City. They have an extensive list of draft and bottles across many different styles. The great thing is that they have a strong focus on Midwestern beers, which are rarely well represented on either Coast. This is a terrible shame, since there are some outstanding beers coming out of that part of the country. The service is courteous, fast and knowledgeable about beer. There were a few times when my selection was not available, and our server would come up with some alternatives. The atmosphere is clearly geared to the college crowd, but this is a serious place for real beer. I've been to Ann Arbor a half dozen times and just learned about it on my last trip. This is the quintessential grad student bar in Ann Arbor, although it is enjoyed by undergrads and faculty alike. If you like beer, you'll be in heaven here. If, like me, you're not a huge beer fan, you'll *still* be able to find some rare brew to enjoy, or at least one of several types of cider. This is more of a sit, talk, and savor type of bar, and a great place to catch up with friends when you've been away from Ann Arbor for a while. My husband and I were in Ann Arbor for a short weekend trip to check out the school and one night after an early dinner we stopped in here. I will say this is most definitely a college bar, so we were surrounded by rambunctous college kids, but there was plenty of seating and a warm atmopshere. It was fun to sit there with our delicious craft beers and just enjoy the noise and warmth. Definitely recommend it and even if you're not a 'beer' fan they have a lot of fun ciders and whiskeys. We got a cheese plate to split, looking for something small. I knew the food here was not the best, so we went for the cheese plate, thinking it was hard to mess that up. I was wrong...the baguette was so salty, it was inedible. The salami and prosciutto were very salty as well, tasted like they got it at a Kroger Manager special. The menu mentioned fig spread, not sure if that's what was on the plate, it didn't taste anything like fig, it was mostly salty mustard seeds. The cheese part of the plate consisted of three sad pieces of cheese. Also came with olives. The server was clearly aware that we didn't like our food, we didn't eat any of it. She didn't bother to ask if anything was wrong or if we needed anything, just there to take the order and bring the check. Overall, I wouldn't recommend that place if you're looking to have dinner. If you're looking for a good beer selection and a college bar atmosphere, this may be a place for you. read more

This isn't a bad place to go with a big group of people, the beer selection is (of course) excellent, and the food is pretty good. ...But, by far, the biggest upside to Ashley's has got to be that the service is so slow you can't get drunk there. Never worry about embarrassing yourself in front of your coworkers again! In all seriousness, while I don't really care that much about getting drunk, I do care about the theoretical ability to do so. Ashley's is a bar through and through. It has a beer menu larger than its food menu, a wide selection of mixed drinks from its fully stocked bar, and an amazing selection of Irish and Scotch whiskey. The food is traditional pub fair, and has always been good. Not great, but good. The interior has definitely seen wear and tear, but it's a bar, not a night club. Booths are isolated from one another, and tables are close quartered. So expect to hear what your neighbor has to say. read more

Great place for a beer and maybe some appetizers, but not a top choice for dinner. Obviously they have an amazing beer selection - even I, a 'girly' beer drinker - can find various options to choose from without feeling too wimpy. They have a fruit-based beer on tap that has something like 10% ABV - incredible (and, dangerous). Setting is alright - dark, wood booths mostly. Probably best for groups of 3-4 people. Food - appetizers seem pretty good. We got some variations of the fries (pesto fries were REALLY good) and then a few other 'okay' things (warm feta dip was just alright, very salty). The dinner items we ordered were not impressive, though - the grilled cheese managed to be particularly disappointing, which I find incredible since it is GRILLED CHEESE. How do you mess that up? I'll tell you: Big slices of not-so-toasted bread with a wimpy single cheese slice inside, which is not even melted. Boo. The philly cheesesteak sandwich was less than delicious also with too much bread-to-filling ratio and served just warm. Definitely one of AA's most well-known beer bars, partly because there are only a handful of beer bars but more so because of their large selection of rotating taps. I went over last night and tried their Left Hand Milk Stout, which was so good that I ended up getting two more. Also had Michigan's ever-so-popular Bell's Oberon as well. Can't give much more of an opinion on the beer aside from that they were both solid drinks. I sat at the bar since my friend was friend's with the bartender, but the bartender was attentive to his other customers and the service is fast for them. However, from my previous experiences, the service at the tables and booths are relatively slow even if all you ordered were a couple beers. Their food menu was shockingly pricey though for what they had to offer... Those must be the best fries ever if you're paying $11 for them. I ended up getting the Chips & Hummus which was a solid deal for about $7 -- the Hummus is drizzled with a lot of olive oil which went very well together. Overall, great selection of drinks -- if you're not a fan of beer but your friends are, they have a menu on mixed drinks and their cider's taste so good that you think you're drinking carbonated juice. Love the note they placed on their jukebox, "No Journey, Bon Jovi, or Britney Spears". I'll be more daring and try their other uncommon beers on tap next time along with their food menu. read more
