I've been going to Asha's for the past decade, and it is easily one of my favorite tea spot in the East Bay. If I could describe Asha's in a few words they would be: modern yet classy, sophisticated yet also comfortable, aesthetic, high quality, and creative . Fruit Teas: Asha's makes the best fruit teas. The blend of quality tea with fresh fruit is perfect. If you're looking for a non-caffeinated alternative, I highly recommend the sparkling fruit drinks which, in my opinion, are underrated. My favorites flavors are grape, Asian pear, and strawberry. Milk Teas: I really like the Jasmine milk tea. It's light and the floral fragrance is beautiful. If you're feeling adventurous, I also recommend the jasmine taro milk tea for more texture and a subtle taro flavor. If you're open to a slightly heavier drink, the Hojicha milk tea is very nice. Always recommend adding in boba and I usually order with whole milk. Everyone raves about Asha's matcha latte, but sadly I'm not a big fan; the matcha latte's milk taste is too strong for my preference and stronger than their other milk teas, so I prefer anything that's not the matcha latte. Space: I love Asha's modern design like the high ceilings and display of their teas. They have a good variety of seating too (e.g. communal table, seats for pairs, and individual high chairs, etc.). You can people watch by the window or hide in the corner. Whenever I work at Asha's, I'm always productive. It's the perfect study / work spot. Service: Teas are made very quickly (within minutes). You can also self order in a kiosk or online. Asha also offers WiFi (it can be spotty when there's too many people), and there are a few outlets for you to charge your devices. One downside is finding parking around downtown Berkeley, which is very challenging. However, if you're planning to spend a few hours at the cafe or plan to do other things around the area, then I think it's worth it to visit Asha's. Price: Asha's drinks are a bit on the pricier side. Not saying they need to bring down the price but one thing I wish Asha would bring back is a loyalty rewards program. I've seen other boba tea shops do something similar and every time I get a discount or a free drink after a certain number of purchase, it makes me feel appreciated as a customer, especially if I'm a regular there. I'm a huge matcha fan, having had some of the best in Japan, and I've been navigating my way through the Bay Area trying to see who really has "the best." Ambiance definitely 10/10! You order at a kiosk so there is no real "customer service." I ordered a matcha latte with regular sweetness and whole milk.. and I can honestly say that the ratio was off. The color AS SOON as I saw the drink.. already threw me off. It was very light green, and I immediately knew that this wouldn't be it.. My friend's strawberry matcha latte was a nice dark green and she said hers was really good. I'm not sure, do they put more matcha in the "specialty" lattes (the ones with mango/strawberry puree)? There was too much milk in mine that I just barely tasted the matcha. I wanted to bring it up to the barista but I just didn't want to be a nuisance especially since they were closing soon. You probably shouldn't read my review because I am biased towards Asha. Personally, if there could only be one tea place in Berkeley, I would say Asha. (Disclaimer: people do say my taste in milk tea is questionable). Could not have gone through this year without the matcha latte and HK coffee milk tea. They ran out of boba back on MLK day in 2019 and another time on commencement day (5/14/2022) which was hilarious. Thought the matcha affogato was eh. The buns have fillings that are OOZING, I would recommend the ube one. They also got ceremonial matcha and pins and mochi muffins. I think the tea can end up tasting bland if you get a topping with it, so the best way to describe this place is that their teas are very delicate. I've been visiting the different Asha spots (Oakland now closed :( and SF) for years. I LOVE their drinks!!! Since working in the downtown Berkeley area, I've visited the shop on University Ave a few times. Interestingly, every time I go, it's the same cashier. The last couple times, I thought, oh maybe they're just having a bad day, and just carry on. However, this time, I must make note of the extremely rude interaction. This is not how you treat customers! When I was ordering my drink, I asked a couple questions (about the matcha grade, etc.). Each answer was given with disdain, rudeness, and a condescending attitude. It seemed like they were short-tempered and very annoyed. I thought, come on... it's a couple questions about the tea! If you can't stand a mere simple 2 questions, YOU SHOULD NOT BE WORKING AT A TEA SHOP!!! Furthermore, as someone who has worked in the service industry for 12+ years, and still works with customers every day... YOU CAN NOT have piss poor service, especially when it's simple inquiries, like, "can I do light ice?" I don't consider these questions to be difficult, or needing much more than a couple seconds to answer. I really feel sorry for this person's incapacity to field simple questions that 100% pertain to their role, and the product that I am purchasing and about to ingest! Because of this interaction, I asked, "Can I ask your name?" They seemed appalled and answered. Another barista overheard my asking and they went behind the other side of the counter to talk. This is the area where I would have to go to pick up my drink. I overheard the other barista say, "Oh yea, I just tell them my name is Charlie hahaha." At hearing this I thought, ok, so you're basically making fun of things and telling your coworker to lie whenever people ask. So I asked the other barista, "And your name?" They just said "NO!" And walked away. This was an extremely discourteous and rude experience. I feel sad for these folks who feel that simple questions about the product are way too much to handle. And then feel threatened when I ask for their names. Ariana, I don't know who hurt you, but I hope you can take this as honest feedback about the way you treat people. Working in customer service is not for everyone, and that's ok. But if you do want to pursue anything in life that deals with people, please see this as a kind note to reflect on how you wear your emotions and project onto others. People don't deserve to deal with what you're dealing with. I do wish you well, and hope you can find some peace and happiness. We got lucky the day we came and found a spot on the same street 2 blocks away. - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - Online ordering system was very easy to navigate. I like how you can customize the tea type, sweetness level/type, ice level down to the T. The interior is gorgeous! Tall ceilings with pretty lights really invite you in. They have a pick-up station for in-person orders as well as online orders. Drinks were ready when we got there, which is always a plus. - DRINKS - Strawberry Black Tea ($5.00): More expensive than what I'm used to paying for a regular size boba, but figured if it tasted good it'd be worth. We were warned that Asha's drinks are less sweet than other spots, so I got Full Sweet (I usually get Less/75%). I'm a fan of nice tea flavor in my drinks, but Asha's seemed a bit diluted to me? It's true, their drinks are definitely less sweet - if I ever come back, I'll probably get 1.5x. I enjoyed the Strawberry bits at the bottom of the drink though, as they provided more sweetness. - OVERALL - Maybe it was an off day - I read some reviews saying they aren't consistent with their drink making, so maybe we came at the wrong time. Don't count on listening to lectures or getting emails written (or hearing yourself think) here. 2 - They don't intervene when aggressive panhandlers enter and linger. There is literally a sign they posted that instructs patrons to ignore a specific individual who has had numerous incidents here and with neighboring business and BPD. They won't stop him or ask him to leave; they just ask patrons to just ignore him while he hovers over you/your table for minutes at a time. I was here every day for a few days, and he came every one of those days, staying for at least half an hour making multiple rounds through the store and hovering. They claim he is nonviolent, but I've seen him try to ram down the door at Berkeley Social Club before (requiring BPD intervention). I feel like employees here should be trained in how to respond to make the space feel safe again. read more

I absolutely love the tea here! Please note that this is not one of those load-em-up with sugar syrup boba places. They specialize in brewing flavorful ceremonial grade tea, which reminds me of the stuff my grandparents used to drink. Add a bit of non-dairy milk/milk and boba and you have a very satisfying beverage. The employees were friendly and knowledgeable about their teas. Asha's puree tastes so damn fresh and full of strawberry seeds, which feels like I'm eating a whole strawberry in the drink lol. Almond milk - standard "Pricey" sure, but you're paying for quality. The overall drink was perfect in texture and flavor. Lightly sweetened without having to mention that was my preference! There were plenty of other tea options, but I'm glad I went with this drink. I'm not a fan of these types of pastry shells (like cream puffs) cuz to me it doesn't taste like anything. But the filling I enjoyed. MATCHA DARK CHOCOLATE COOKIES - $? These came in a pack of 2. They taste like chewy chocolate brownie cookies, filled with matcha cream. I really enjoyed it. I don't know the price but it's definitely at least $5. Love love love the matcha. There's really nothing like it. The best part, they have seasonal offerings like strawberry puree with the matcha. Little adjustments can be made to the drinks, but the flavors here are already so good that nothing needs to be done. Carefully crafted, each drink it made to perfections.
