As always, I love a local shop, especially when it comes to comics. Ash Ave is a hidden gem for comics and their selection is niche. I will always find the issue or trade that I'm looking for specifically at Ash Ave. Everyone that works there is super friendly and helpful. I came in one time seeking the Absolute Batman Annual weeks after it was already sold only to find out there was one issue left that they were selling for a higher price point. I believe the owner was the one who offered it to me as soon as I vocalized how badly I wanted it and he kindly gave me a discount! When I was an avid collector, I used to come weekly here because they have some of the best selection of comics in the Valley. And they're pretty personable too. Best store for anyone trying to get into comics.. Ashe Ave is for sure the most down to earth store with the coolest guys running it. Anyone who has left them a bad review I know for a fact is a weirdo because the guys running the show at Ashe Avenue will always take the time to provide genuine service and answer any questions. Respect is a two way street and I think a lot of customers forget that, and even still I've even seen these guys go the extra mile and have patience for stuff that's beyond me. I was "new" to comics, especially collecting, when I first went to Ashe Ave - I'd been casually into comics but would read mostly digitally as going into stores in the past has left a bad impression when the owners of other shops often have elitist attitudes (over comic books of all things lol) I literally had a situation at another store where I just was asking how a pull list worked so I could give them money, but instead they just were just condescending and tried to like lecture me or something about how I don't really own digital comics and I'm a POS for not supporting local shops - So I went and supported another local shop lol. it wasn't until checking out Ashe Avenue that I felt like I was part of a community. Initially, seeing all the new releases I could jump in on to start reading was what hooked me, as their layout made it easy to find the books I was interested in getting started with. But I'd say the real value doesn't just come from the comics, but from the people. The first few times I went I had so many questions and they took the time to not only explain stuff about the titles, volume numbering and the pre-order systems etc.. but also about the different continuities and stories and how they flowed. At this point we've had talks about so many comics and even the industry itself, they even went as far as to try and break down the entire timeline of the "Bendis era" to the "Hickman" era of marvel comics to me because I was curious about the different New Avengers titles. These are genuine and kind dudes that have a genuine passion in sharing what their hobbies with whoever walks into their store. Now I've been going to Ashe Avenue for probably about a year now dropping embarrassing amounts of money every week to keep building my collection and keeping up with the ongoing releases. I'm not comic book shop guru, but my 10 year old son took a recent interest in comics, so we decided to check this place out. We walked in super close to closing time on a weekday evening a few weeks ago, but Drew, the owner, was super kind and helpful and didn't rush us at all. My son found everything he was seeking and more with Drew's assistance. Just as stated on their website, this locally owned business provides "a laid-back, friendly, judgment-free place for long-time enthusiasts and new readers alike to enjoy perennial favorites and discover new books to treasure." I come here all the time when im done thrifting down the street. There selection of different publishers and variety is always amazing. Its super easy to find new authors and stories you've never hear of before. I also love the selection of local artist and authors. The staff is always so nice and are super knowledgable. Ash Avenue Comics is one of those old school comic bookstores which remind me of my youth. They tend to stock 6-10 of everything that comes out each Wednesday and makes it easy for you with new books in the front of the store. They stock the previous weeks ones along the wall. But just like the stores of my youth, Ash is snug inside and has limited street parking. My co-workers and I come here every three weeks or so and we always find something new, or didn't realize was out yet. Recently I picked up a old 1968 Sgt Fury comic for $10.00. That was when Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. was fight the Nazis and not Hydra in WWII. LOL Enjoy! read more

I've come here off and on through living nearby, and ended up starting a box during that time. They are always super helpful when I stop in, and incredibly kind and knowledgeable. Even with me not stopping in more than once or twice a month, I'm often greeted by name and given the items reserved for me! They have even gone as far as to pull items I had forgotten to order, but that were related to a series I had subscribed just because they knew I was following along with it! Was kicked out for trying to use the open, unattended bathroom in the store there was no sign on the door or anything blocking its view and for that we immediately got kicked out and called entitled. Was extremely rude and condescending to us. Do not attempt this store. read more

My son, who is a huge comic book fan, was in town for the holidays. I brought him to Ash so he could have some fun. It's a small space but it is packed to the rim with all things comic, from classic comics, comic novels, figures, etc. They had tons of $1 comics, and if you buy 50 or more they are only 0.50 each (applicable only to the comic books in the $1 section. We spent well over an hour going through thousands of comic books, picking out all of the Batman, Wolverine, Hellraiser, and Green Arrow comics. He was so happy and surprised to find that they actually had what he wanted. We walked out with 50 desirable comics for $27, after tax. The employees were pleasant, asked if we needed anything, then left us in peace as we browsed. It's a cool shop. read more

My absolute favorite comic book store in Arizona!!! Selection is fantastic and there are always interesting things to find. It's an excellent place for educators and parents to find books for kids as well. Most importantly, however, this is a shop that treats women, minorities, and the LGBT community with respect. What a cool comic book shop. The store is seriously just one big room with rows of comic books, old school style. That makes me happy on the inside! When I was in Phoenix for business I was drawn in from afar because we were waiting on a ride back to the hotel anyway. Guy that was working there was super nice and knew a ton about comics so he was able to help a friend of mine who was not well versed buy something for her boyfriend. Started arguing with me when I was pointing out that there was nothing indicating appointment only! She used profanity at us when we questioned her and the next appointment availability! Have you ever been bashed for not being nerdy enough? I've had to deal with the geek elite a few times (I.e. Trying to learn Dungeons and Dragons and getting made fun of for not being able to keep up), which can make entering places like comic shops very annoying. Ash Ave Comics is welcoming and has a great selection. I've never felt like the staff or the clientele has peered down their nose at me for being indifferent to the DC/Marvel feud. Some of us just want recommendations based on Bitch Planet, and Ash Ave is perfect for that. This is a great store to get lost in and spend hours aimlessly thumbing through comics. read more

It was my first time going to the comic shop and everything was well organized and overall, I had a very fun experience. I had not been to a comic book shop in over 4 years so I'm glad I live at a place where there's one nearby. I wasn't sure what I wanted to buy when I first came in there, but I ended up buying a new Thor comic and a Snot Girl comic, which were easy for me to find. They had a good selection of figures that weren't only just from comics. It included stuff from TV shows and video games as well. They also had some shirts and posters. They didn't carry my size since a lot of the shirts were L+ but they had a nice variety of designs. It was really nice and chill and I can see myself coming here often and hopefully continue my comic collection again! read more

It's a nifty college town shop in a somewhat hipstery area (I mean, Cartel Coffee Lab is a few doors down). With that said, it's not a very big shop and it caters mostly to young adult readers who have finally outgrown men of steel, caped crusaders, and star-spangled hot pants. Along with the usual suspects of Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Garth Ennis, and all the other graphic novelist greats, they carry a lot more independent stuff than the expected superhero books. I was actually impressed to see issues of McSweeney's (including #36, which was a box painted to look like a head, full of books and pamphlets). The first thing you see on entering the shop is the bargain bin of graphic novels and figures. Couldn't help but laugh seeing the faded "Heroes" figures thrown in there with the Quasimodo Spartan from "300." How the mighty have fallen. The guy working there was pretty cool, greeted us on entering, and let us go about our business. read more

My only complaint about this place is that they NEVER open on time. One time I psyched myself up and I was like, "Okay, Sunday... I'm buying a comic," and they opened like an hour late. I assumed they were out of business so I went home and I was going to call and see if I got a message that said they were sorry, but unfortunately closed due to blah blah blah. Someone answered, to my shock, so I biked my ass down there and finally got me some comics. It's not that big of a deal because I'm lazy too. I know how it goes. Plus, Casey Moore's is right there. I used my idle time to have a couple beers. It's a cool place. If you don't know what to get, ask the dude working at the register what you're into and you'll leave the store with an obscure comic you've never heard of but in the end are glad you finally learned about it. I bought two comics... one, a comedic, indie masterpiece called The Fart Party, which I thought was the FRAT Party until I got home. I'm glad it's fart because I don't like frats much, but farting is normal, human and appeals to my inner immaturity. The second comic I bought was called Dogs & Water which is a surreal journey into I don't even know what the fuck. It was awesome, though. It's great to browse, too. I used to be a huge Spider-Man fan when I was in my youth and spent a good hour looking at Spider-Man comics and parts of an incomplete series I had when I was like twelve. So good. I'm going to be back and, by God, I'm gonna get me some Spider-Man comics. read more

This is my favorite place to get comic books for my classroom and myself! I've been coming here for the past 12 years and am a lifelong devotee of Ash Ave Comics. The sweet staff finds me books that are engaging, funny, and appropriate for my vast swath of readers (not always an easy task at my school). They also have great suggestions for my real adult life. Ash Avenue Comics is a great alternative to Atomic Comics and other big name stores..Its probably the best comic book store in the East Valley. I won't drive all the way to All About Books and Comics in Phoenix so this is my go to place. I have only 2 issues: #1: They are NEVER open on time! Which is fine because I get off work early on Fridays and head there on the way home.. But they are supposed to open at Noon not 12:30 as it seems to happen most weeks. This has been the situation with 2 guys who have worked on Fridays..Seriously when your sign says you open at noon please be open at noon. #2: They don't carry enough current issues. The good points are that the staff is friendly but not persistent and they allow you to browse the comics. I could never read comics like that at Atomic.. read more

This place looks nice and is in a good location, but my goodness the rent must be insanely high. The reason I say this is that the most inconsequential back-issues are so overpriced it's actually funny. There are comics in there priced at $9 that are $2 maybe $3 anywhere else!
