Moo Shu Ice Cream & Kitchen - Vietnamese coffee & brownie ice cream sandwich in packaging

There's also a small public square with some benches outside that will absolutely be useful for busy summer nights. My recommendation is to grab an ice cream sandwich bar from one of the freezers where you line up to order - great textures, fresh flavours, and lots of fun. Easy to split with a loved one! Prices are a bit high, but Moo Shu sources local ingredients (with the names of local farms on the flavour signs!), and pays employees a livable wage. It's a great place to stop by and support, while trying a delicious new flavour. Their new location is absolutely a step up :)

I showed up around 9:00 on a random Tuesday and the place was impressively packed. The line was snaking out the door but it moved quickly. I've always been a huge fan of French Onion Soup, so when I saw a flavor called French Onion Scoop, I obviously had to get it. It's not good. The quality of the ice cream itself is top-notch (i.e. it's super creamy) but the flavor is just kind of gross. Plus there's a lot of sautéed onion in there and I think there's a reason onion and ice cream have never been combined before. I ate some of my cup but wound up throwing most of it away. To paraphrase Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park, Moo Shu was so preoccupied with whether or not they could make a French Onion Soup inspired ice cream flavor, they didn't stop to think if they should. (I should note I also tried a couple bites of their DunkaMoo's ice cream sandwich and it was really delicious, so obviously they are capable of making an excellent product.)

Happy Rolls - Skor rolled ice cream

I had seen that Happy Rolls opened up recently (Summer 2024) and initially they were only selling rolled ice cream. I wasn't in such a hurry to try it because while rolled ice cream is fun, I've had it before and the novelty has worn off for me, lol. However, I recently saw that they added shaved ice to their menu. I LOVE shaved ice! But the texture has to be like fluffy snow. Not the gross coarsely crushed ice of ice cones, yuck. So I had to check them out. I am happy to report that their shaved ice is like fluffy snow! I got the Lychee Bliss ($7.99) which is lychee flavoured shaved ice (it's dairy-free) with lychee popping boba and lychee jellies. I enjoyed it. However, I think it would be tastier if it was shaved ice milk. However, I understand that they want to have a product for vegans/dairy-free people. Also I think the dessert would be more photogenic if they added some rainbow jellies or other coloured popping boba as garnish on top. While it was tasty to my mouth, visually it was a bit too monochromatic, lol. Just a suggestion for the business. The toppings are exactly those that are usually found in bubble teas, so the jellies are made of Coco de Nata and the popping boba gelatin is made of seaweed, so totally vegan. Staff were courteous. The guy was working by himself, so the wait was long on a Saturday afternoon. It's a little hut, so everything is to-go. There are a few tables and seats in front of the hut that is shared with the hut next door that sells tacos. I like the compostable paper bowls and compostable wooden spoons. Nice addition to the neighbourhood. Street parking only. (137)

I can't help but to compare it to Brett's Ice…read moreCream in Kanata, because both ice cream shops are co-located with auto shops and both places sell soft serve ice cream with flavour bursts. The prices are the same too! Although the portion size at Coco's is smaller than Brett's. However, I live much closer to Coco's. I discovered Coco's Cafe and Creamery here on Yelp! I didn't even know that it existed, despite the fact that I live relatively close by. Good thing I was trolling for ice cream shops nearby on my trusty Yelp App! Lol. So they only have soft serve ice cream, no hard/scoop ice cream. They have coffee, affogato, and "Blizzardz" (which are like Dairy Queen Blizzards or McDonald's McFlurries). I had a small vanilla cone with a Pina Colada flavour burst ($2.25+$1=$3.25), and my husband had a medium vanilla cone with a coffee n' cream flavour burst ($3.25+$1=$4.25). I enjoyed my ice cream. The Pina Colada flavour was not intense enough in my opinion. I would have liked a more potent pineapple coconut flavour. My husband enjoyed his cone too. I had a taste of his and found the coffee flavour mild as well. Service was efficient and courteous. The person was wearing a mask, which I appreciated during these Covid Pandemic times. So you can only access this place while going westbound on Carling Ave (there is a median, so you cannot turn into the place while going eastbound. Also when you exit, you have to keep going westbound, which is a bit inconvenient if you want to go eastbound). You need to turn into the parking lot once you see the auto shop (Treff's Auto Centre/Coco Auto Service). If you drive until you actually see the Coco's Cafe and Creamery, it's too late, you've passed it. There is a chalk sandwich board that says "ice cream" to kind of alert you, but it's not too prominent. The ice cream shop is just a window where you order. There's 1 picnic table there where you can eat your ice cream. Or you can eat it in your car in the parking lot, lol. Or I guess you can walk along Carling Ave and eat your ice cream, although Carling is not the prettiest of streets, haha. Anyway, if you like Brett's Ice Cream but live east of Kanata and think driving to Kanata is too far, give Coco's Cafe and Creamery a try! There is free parking in the same lot as the auto centre.

Whether it's soft serve, hand churned ice cream, or the smell of fresh waffle cones , there is a flavour for everyone at this spot along Bank Street! I had been meaning to try them since they opened but I wasn't quite feeling for ice cream in the Fall or Winter and then when Spring and Summer came along the lines were out the door, and you know me, I hate lines and crowds, lol. So finally on a warm but gloomy and overcast Sunday in June, I found myself in The Glebe walking by Haven's Creamery and lo and behold it was empty! So my husband and I went in for a couple of scoops of their ice cream. I was deciding between their London Fog, Passion Fruit Cheesecake and Strawberry flavours. I was offered samples of all three and I decided on the Passion Fruit Cheesecake (the London Fog flavour was too subtle for me, I was hoping for more potency. And the Strawberry while tasty was too ordinary for me, haha). My husband was much more decisive and didn't even sample anything. He got the Mint Chocolate Chip. We got our scoops in a bowl and they were $5.25 each. The Passion Fruit Cheesecake had a nice passion fruit flavour to it. Not as potent as I would have liked, but it was pronounced enough. It had pieces of cheesecake in it along with graham cracker crumb crust. It wasn't too sweet, which I appreciated. It was good. I had a taste of my husband's Mint Chocolate Chip and I really appreciated that it didn't have any artificial green colour. The mint was subtle and the chocolate chips were too large and too hard for my liking. However, he enjoyed it. Overall, I'm glad I finally got to try Haven's Creamery. I like that they have more creative flavours. The portion size was rather small, so it was a bit spendy for my wallet, so I won't be a regular, but definitely happy to have more ice cream options in town. Service was pleasant. There are 2 tables for 2 with chairs at the front of the store and a couple of high tables with no chairs. They sell ice cream by the pint as well. Street parking only.

I walked in not really knowing what to order or what to expect, but luckily I was the only customer at the time, so I had the chance to take it all in. * Service: The staff were friendly and helpful, which made the experience easy and welcoming. * Portion size: The cakes are huge! Honestly, I think a smaller size option would be great, but if you're hungry or sharing, the big portion works. * Texture & taste: Don't expect it to be like a BeaverTail--it's closer to the texture of a freshly cooled scone. The mix of crunchy outside, soft inside, and the added nuts made it really enjoyable. Overall, I'd definitely recommend trying it out if you're curious about chimney cakes. It's a fun treat, different from the usual Ottawa sweets, and worth experiencing at least once!

The Long Version: I had chimney cakes for the first time in 2015 at the short-lived Chimney Cake Bake 'N' Roll store in Bayshore Mall. It was thick and fluffy and tasty. The one I recently had at Chimnies was a bit thinner and less fluffy, but still enjoyable. Chimnies recently opened up on Bank St. I went in November 2024 and the man working there told me they've been open for 2 months. I'm thrilled to have a chimney cake store in Ottawa again, as we had none after Chimney Cake Bake 'N' Roll closed down. Chimnies was having a BOGO (buy one get one free) deal in UberEats: $8.50 for a Biscoff Chimney Cake. I ordered this for pickup. My husband and I usually like to share our food, but thanks to this deal, we each had our own. He finished his, but I found a whole one a bit too much for me in one sitting, so I saved about a third of it for later. The Biscoff Chimney Cake had Biscoff cookie crumbs on the outside (Biscoff butter cookies with a hint of caramel) and a Biscoff spread on the inside. The man working there was courteous. It's takeout only. There is no seating inside. Street parking only. (204)
