Vita smoothie
Matt B.

Pretty solid for what it is really. I went for lunch on a Monday looking for something healthy. I got their make-your-own-bowl ($10 plus tax), which comes with your choice of protein (I got tofu; they also have Beyond Meat), on a bed of spinach, lettuce, quinoa or mix of any two or three, plus 5 toppings, and choice of dressing. If you order a bowl, you get 40% off any smoothie (so $3 instead of $5, a good deal) -- I got the vita smoothie, which is packed with greens. I must've got my 9/day just from this meal. Tasty, fresh food, healthy, and reasonably priced. Nothing special, but it executes perfectly on what it sets out to do.

Custom Fried Egg Breakfast Wrap
Jay B.

Great little place for custom smoothies and wraps. I rate 5 stars because this is the kind of business I like to support. Its one off, local and unique. I've gone there fours times for breakfast now every Friday morning and once for lunch. Turns out the guy serving, Dan, is actually one of the partners who own the business. I really respect that he works there, opening every day and also gives employment to others. They've been in business now about four years. Juice Monkey is all about customization. They have a chart of smoothie suggestions but you can combine anything you want as long as it fits into the cup size you request. You have a choice of soya milk or frozen yogurt as a base. You can also add protein power if you like. They also offer custom wraps. Dan fries me an egg every morning on request and I get to chose from different flavors of wraps, any four toppings and sauce. All the sauces I've tried so far I've enjoyed and again they seem unique to me and have funny names like "Juice Monkey Kicker"! Kick your butt into gear in the morning! Yay! Lunch wraps are similar, you can chose from a few types of meat and as many toppings as you like. You pay a little more for the lunch wrap. They also offer cereal bowls which I have not tried. You can also buy supplements and protein bars, which I have not seem offered as such by other downtown, office worker "feeding stations". For additional service Juice Money offers a paid membership for a 40% discount off everything in the store. Might be worth your while if your regular. So if you like smoothies and wraps, don't want a heavy bread and meat sandwich and love customizing your order drop in and check it out. Variety of choice is good without being over whelming. I feel its a unique product for downtown Ottawa and price competitive with the other breakfast and lunch places. Medium smoothie and 12" wrap costs me about $8.50. I'm going to spend at least $7 at Tim Hortons and I think that is the cheapest breakfast I can get. The health factor alone is worth the up charge. Check it out.

Whole Foods Market

My first visit to a Whole Foods Market was years ago, after completing a job interview in Yorkville…read morein Toronto. I definitely remember what I got: a slice of tiramisu. At that time, it was the only Whole Foods in the greater Toronto area. Whole Foods has grown on me, likely because Markham has one and I frequent it often. I don't fit the profile of a typical Whole Foods shopper who tends to carry expensive handbags, must get everything organic, and can afford all things expensive, including tiny bottles of elixirs that extend their years on planet Earth. I like their dairy-free items. I love Carbonaut bread and the entire bakery section, including tiramisu. There are specific items that I get at this store. If I'm looking for romaine lettuce or celery, you'll likely see me at a grocery store that offers these items at normal, cheaper prices. Four years ago, I was in the Glebe and saw this Whole Foods store. I didn't go in. I had already got what I needed at a Metro. On my most recent visit, after spending a few hours exploring the area with a friend, I realized that I needed almond beverage and lemons. I had yet to set foot in any grocery store. They were good reasons to check this store out. I had parked underground. The elevator got me to this store. I exited the elevator on the main floor to hit Winners. This store has a cafe that occupies the entire floor. It was busy just before noon. People must love getting coffee and a baked good here. When I returned just past 5 pm, you could hear crickets on this floor. The cafe was closed. It was different. My local one is still open when I'm there at 7 pm. I have yet to hit the cafe at any Whole Foods location. I took the escalator up to the second floor, which is where the entire supermarket is. I immediately found almond beverage. Organic. Sugar-free. Perfect. I also found the produce area. The Rainier cherries looked good. They were also so expensive that I blocked the price out and moved on. I got a couple of lemons. You could get a bag of six. The price was the same if you calculated how much one lemon was going for, so you might as well pick your own pristine-looking lemons. I looked around. It has the usual salad and hot food bars. You pay by weight, which does add up if you aren't careful. There were lots of snacks and drinks to choose from. A can of flavoured carbonated water was going for $2.69. It makes you wonder how this store determines the prices that it sets. It was enjoyable looking at the plants and flowers. It's a nice grocery store. I had an equally nice woman at the checkout area. I paid for my items with a debit card. I didn't need a bag. My lemons were already in one, so I carried it and my carton of almond beverage to the elevator. It was convenient taking the elevator down to the underground parking lot. I walked to my car, paid for parking, and left. The lemons and almond beverage were great. I'm glad that I got what I needed at this store. I had a fun time shopping here. It's my second Whole Foods that I've been to where it has two floors. We'll see if I return in another four years. Maybe I'll try the cafe... haha! (262)

When she told me about this special, I had the following day to take advantage of this offer before it disappeared. After a great day shopping, I capped it off by getting a drink from this CoCo Fresh Tea & Juice. Driving over to this location made me cut through a part of Ottawa that I used to spend a lot of time walking around. I used to stay at a hotel at 140 Slater Street and it's still a hotel! I reckon that walking from there to this CoCo would take ten minutes. I parked on Bank Street. It was free parking by the time that I got there after 6 pm, so I was thrilled. If you're there during the daytime, you'll have to pay, which is the only downside to visiting this location. This CoCo is on the northwest corner of Bank Street and Somerset Street West. It looks like a tiny store, but it isn't. It's deep when you walk in. I had the nicest woman help me out. I asked if the Canada Day drink was still available. It was. I got it with less ice. The sugar level was fixed. I paid with a credit card. I tapped and was good. It didn't take long for my drink to be ready. I thanked her and happily headed back to my car. The Canada Day drink is the Three Guys Milk Tea, but two other guys in the form of toppings decided to join in on the fun. I will say that you you love toppings in your bubble tea, this one is for you. One word: hefty! My large cup was a third full of toppings. I thoroughly enjoyed this bubble tea on my birthday. You didn't know what toppings you were going to suck up and enjoy with each sip. The milk tea was a perfect balance of strong tea with the perfect milky consistency that you'd expect from CoCo. The fixed sugar wasn't horrible. I'm guessing that it was at 25%, which I was fine with for someone who generally cuts out the sugar. Frankly, I was stuffed eating dinner and having this Canada Day drink with a built-in meal. I loved it all! I liked visiting this store. I hope to do it again when I'm back. It was great dropping by after rush hour and parking for free as if I was getting away with murder. (281)

I'm always excited to try out new bubble tea places, and it was pretty good. I went after work on a Monday and there was a steady stream of customers. There was a slight wait for my drink, but it wasn't that long. Service was very friendly but they didn't have some drinks and sort of discouraged me from ordering some drinks, lol. So I expressed interest in the Taro Milk Tea, but wanted to ask what kind of milk they used (like non-dairy creamer (yuck, not a fan of Coffee Mate-like products) or real cow's milk and if the latter, 2%, whole milk, or skim). The guy at the cash register didn't seem to know the answer to any of my questions and deferred them all to the guy making the drinks, lol. I was told that if I wanted a taro drink he recommended the Taro Frappe because the Taro Milk Tea is just powder and milk. The menu actually says "made with real taro" but hey if the dude making the drink is telling me they use powder, I'm figuring it's made with powder, lol. So I decided to pass on all taro drinks. I asked about the Hokkaido Milk Tea and was told they didn't have that. Ok then. The guy suggested I get a fruit tea. So I asked about the Wintermelon tea and I didn't quite catch what he said about it, but he then said he recommended the Hawaiian Green Tea because "it's really good." The Hawaiian Green Tea was listed as Mango, Peach and Passion Fruit and I don't like the passion fruit seeds that usually come with passion fruit teas, and told him that and he said no problem he could sub out the passion fruit with a different fruit like strawberry. I said sure and got the Hawaiian Green Tea with strawberry instead of passion fruit and with tapioca. It was $6.49. I got no sugar and less ice (which they call "cold." They call the default amount of ice "freezing" and no ice "lukewarm"). The drink was quite tasty, even though it didn't have any real fruit chunks in it that I could see. I read on the Skip the Dishes menu for the Kingston location that they use fruit jam. I'm happy to report that my drink wasn't too sweet. The tapioca were soft and chewy. Overall, I was pleased with my drink. Happy to have another bubble tea option in town. Paid street parking or paid parking lot/garage/parkade only.

We were out and about and remembered that Mandy's had just opened the week we were in the area. We dropped by to grab a bite and there was quite the lineup here! It's nice and bright in here. I can't explain it but it reminds me of all the other Mandy's we've been to in Montreal and Toronto. After some trying to figure out what we wanted, we settled on a cobb salad as we had been talking about a cobb salad for some time. There were about 8 people in front of us and the staff were also working on orders for delivery platforms so we were excepting quite the wait. In a couple of minutes we were front of the line and ordered our salads. It took them no time to get us our salads and we were in and out of there within 10 minutes as we opted to take our order to go since it was beautiful out. The salads were just as good as the other locations we've been. They're pretty consistent. Dressing was good, ingredients were fresh. I was so hungry that I totally forgot to get a picture of the salad. I think the next time I'm in, I'll get a different signature salad as I do like other salads they have here more. It's just cobb salads came up in conversation around that time and it's something that was on the menu so we decided to get. We'll be back!
