Best place in Bayshore if you want a healthy snack. I don't find it expensive either as you can put unlimited toppings in your bowl

My friend brought me to Pomelo Hat for bubble tea. She knew that I'd like a bubble tea joint that…read morewas exclusively local to Ottawa. This place has the most fascinating mixture of items on the menu to order from. It offers bubble tea. You can also get dim sum, which includes dumplings, har gow, siu mai, steamed custard buns, and spring rolls. In other words, it caters to folks like me who crave all these items all the time. The menu also offers sushi rice bowls. I don't know if it's exclusively Pomelo Hat offerings or if it's under Kiramaki's menu. Kiramaki Sushi shares the same space with Pomelo Hat. This store truly has everything I want and love. It's awesome. Here's the best part. Pomelo Hat has sparkling butterfly pea spritzer. OMG! I absolutely love drinks with bubbles. I didn't have to look any further. I got the tropical sunset butterfly pea sparkling spritzer with coconut jelly. Starbucks, eat your heart out with that drink name! My drink came in one size: large. I got it with less ice and no sugar (it's called minimal sweet here). My friend was kind to take me here, so the least that I could do was get the tab on her bubble tea. She chose a regular strawberry green tea QQ. She could have ordered every topping available on the menu, but she had composure and didn't break my bank. It's funny. I was so into taking photos of my drink with the various plant backdrops at this place that I completely forgot about my bag that I had left here. Oops! Luckily, we were only a few blocks away and nobody wanted my stuff. Technically, we dropped by twice this day. There is bar seating by the window. It's a fairly small space that it's more of a fetch-and-go place. We continued taking photos of our drinks outside. We then walked, sat, and chatted. My drink was so good. It was bubbly and cheerful. It had a cantaloupe base with a subtle sweetness to it. The coconut jelly provided a nice chewy contrast. My drink was so good and perfect on a hot summer day. My friend enjoyed her drink. With QQ drinks, they come with tapioca and your choice of any jelly. I thought that the flexibility was nice. We tend to take our bubble tea the same way, so she went no sugar and less ice, too. I never got around to coming back to try the dim sum. I had been craving dumplings during my vacation and other establishments that I had frequented satisfied that ongoing want. I'll need to come back here and give its all-day dim sum menu a try. This place is on Fantuan. I hope it still is when I come back for more. I loved my bubble tea. I have the lychee rose lemonade sparkling butterfly pea spritzer left to try before I branch into the non-sparkling teas. (264)

Every spring I start craving Pomelo Hat and dragging my friends and coworkers around to try it. They love it too! In spring 2024 I used the last of my Carleton Residence floor budget to bulk order 15 drinks for my students and they loved it and went back for more. Friendly service, great food, but best to pop in for as there isn't much in the way of seating. My favourite drink there is the Yuzu Ginger Seltzer boba which is absolutely SCRUMPTIOUS. Fresh lemon slices and bits of candied ginger mixed in. Absolutely delightful. I love you Pomelo Hat!!!!!!

I stopped by Sweet n Salad to grab a salad for lunch on the way to my parents' house (they were craving Chinese food, so I grabbed some combos for them elsewhere, but I was looking for something lighter and less greasy for myself, lol). I got the Signature Salad ($15.99), but substituted the pomegranate seeds with cucumbers. The salad comes with mixed greens, quinoa, grape tomatoes, feta cheese, chicken, pumpkin seeds and Italian seasonings sprinkled on top. I asked for the dressing on the side. The default dressing is their Signature dressing, which I can best describe as a light sweet dressing. I loved that it was on the watery side and was neither too oily nor too creamy/rich. I only used about a sixth of it, but saved the rest to use on my own salads ;) The vegetables were for the most part fresh. Although a few of the lettuce pieces were browning. The chicken was lean breast meat cut into cubes. All the salad ingredients are prepped and ready and they just assemble the ingredients when you order it. There are preset salads or you can create your own with the ingredients they have. Overall the salad was tasty and the portion size was good. The price was a bit high in my opinion, but everything seems to be expensive these days. It's definitely convenient, and there aren't many places in Orleans to get quick meals that aren't greasy or deep-fried, lol. It's one of the healthier options. I'm looking forward to bringing my nieces here to try their rolled ice cream. The restaurant has some seats to dine in, but there's no table service. You order, they assemble your food, you pay, and if you want to eat in, you seat yourself and cleanup after yourself. There are a few tables outside in front of the restaurant too if you want to eat outdoors. The restaurant is in a plaza so there's lots of free parking in the plaza parking lot. (140)

The Long Version: I was wandering around St. Laurent Shopping Centre with my mom when we came across Rio Acai. Initially I thought it was just another place that sold Acai bowls, but upon closer inspection we discovered that they also sold Brazilian snacks like Coxinha, Pão de queijo and Brazilian tapioca crepes. They also had Brigadeiros! We were still stuffed from lunch (from Minda Cafe nearby) but wanted to try something, so we shared a Coxinha ($5.90). It was delicious! It's essentially a deep-fried croquette with mashed potatoes, shredded chicken and cheese inside. It's shaped like a teardrop but we weren't sad eating it at all, lol. In fact we were happy to eat something so delicious. It was flavourful with a crunchy exterior and a creamy interior. Service was pleasant. They are not in the food court, but rather on the main floor near the Shoppers Drug Mart and Toys R Us. They are close to Cinnabon. I'll definitely return to try their other items. I'm especially looking forward to trying their Brazilian cheese bread (Pão de queijo). Lots of free parking at the shopping mall parking lot. (162)

In 2003 they were acquired by the MTY Group, and they saw almost a doubling in the number of locations across Canada (they have about 45 locations now). Although they have always been a chain, I do find that with time, they have become "more chain-like" if that makes sense. In days past they were more like those little independent panini shops where different types of panini were pre-made and laid out, then pressed to order. Even though the sandwiches were pre-made they always tasted fresh (they'd be made every morning). And there would be big bowls of pre-made salads, like pasta salad, bean salad, couscous salad, etc. Now things are more made-to-order, which you think would be a good thing, but it just feels more like a Subway Sandwiches now, lol. There's only one Cultures Restaurant in all of Ottawa (this one at Bayshore Shopping Centre) and only 2 in the whole National Capital Region (the other one is on Gatineau). There are lots in Toronto and in Montreal. My first time eating at Cultures was in Toronto with my mom when I was a kid. We ate at food courts a lot, it was good times, lol. I do like Cultures in general, but this location is not as nice as the ones in Toronto and Montreal. And of course, not as nice as Cultures of days past ;) Still a good place to grab a healthier meal at the food court though.

I *LOVE* bread, but sometimes I need a break!), and other fast food, which we tend to eat to much of anyway, on a regular basis too. So this time, I ordered a salad that sounded good. It came in at about $10, while the hubby bragged that his chili and a bun came in at about half that price. I'm only giving it a 3-star, although I'd want to give more - simply because of the fresh alternative spin of Cultures. My salad was topped with blueberries and strawberries, a nice dressing, and... ummmm... was it cous cous? It was tasty, almost to the bottom. However, the bottom half of my salad was very full of ... kale. Yay kale! NOT. It's so bitter! However, I would revisit this review again, given a few months... once the lettuce scare is over and fresh crops have ripened! If it's better next time, I will update this review at that time.
