Pretty overpriced I payed $125 for my meal. The portions are small similar to some other neighboring joints. The service is awesome, the sushi is great. They have traditional Japanese soups and dishes you can't find anywhere else, like sea bass miso soup, or uni with egg custard and truffles.. That's the other thing that's awesome the truffle is every where's. Tiny place and very worth checking out. Not my choice for my usual spot though. A great spot to have quality sushi & unique pairings. This place will not disappoint.

I went to Asanebo just two nights ago after a long hiatus and DAMN that place is STILL SO GOOD. It's one of those places where you eat and you immediately want to go back even though you're full as heck and broke as hell. This is my first time doing omakase style and it definitely guaranteed a 5 star rating from me. I like to think I eat a lot of sushi and every single time I've been here, it's been quality stuff. If you've ever had omakase at Matsuhisa, it is very similar--what I like to call "contemporary sushi"--meaning no rolls (i.e. california rolls, philly rolls, rainbow rolls, etc.), but some really good, well thought out combinations that make your senses go WOW. I can't quite remember all of the dishes, but there was one that was brought out on a wood paddle that had three different types of oysters, ginko nuts, homemade tofu (YUM!) and one other white fish. The presentation was excellent and I love that each of the items on the paddle were thoroughly explained to us by the waiter. Also, if you're wondering about sake selection, the waiters are very good at pairing your sakes. In previous experiences I've sat at the bar before and that's really fun if you get to talk to the sushi chefs. They're very informative and really love what they do. They'll tell you everything from where the fish was bought (i.e. this mackerel was sent over from Japan this morning) to what the best fish of the day is. O yea, and the ice cream trio is a MUST TRY!! It's cheese ice cream, sesame ice cream and traditional vanilla--all made in-house...MMmMmmMm... All in all, I love this place (as you can tell). The parking sucks and don't look at the prices if you really want to enjoy yourself, but you'll definitely catch yourself daydreaming about it even a few days after you've gone. read more

We walked in on a Tuesday night at 7:00, after being told they do not take reservations at the sushi bar. There was only 3 other people in the restaurant but around 8:00 almost every seat was taken. I had heard so many wonderful things I was just glad to be there. The atmosphere and ambiance is a complete opposite to the stark strip mall entrance. We were made to feel comfortable from the time we sat down as they explained the menu and the various options for the "special menu". We selected the B menu - not the cheapest ($100 per) but not the most expensive either. If you want a fabulous Japanese meal then this place is top shelf. The presentation, quality and selection is superb. Our waiter recomended an excellent saki to enhance our experience. For a great Japanese meal there is no place better. However, if you are a sushi lover like me, then I still have to go with Sushi Nozawa. Althought the sashimi and sushi at Asanebo is great it still can not compare Sushi Nozawa. I have been a fan of the "Nazi" for over 5 years and I have never been dissapointed by a meal at the sushi bar. As Nozawa's sign says, "trust me", I am saying trust me and go the Sushi Nozawa for the nest sushi experience in L. A. and go to Asanebo for a wonderul Japanese dinner experience. If you really want to treat yourself to some good sushi this is it. It's not cheap by any means and can be pricier than most fine dining restaurants depending on your appetite. I tried multiple dishes, but the salmon sashimi was extremely good. It literally melted on my tongue. I also tried braised pork, and I never imagined the pork fat that was running through the meat could taste so good. I usually am skeptical about restaurants that receive so many good reviews, but this place is the best Sushi i ever had. First time here. Good sushi, good ambiance, poor service. Spent $380 for two (very little drinks). The sushi chef, a younger man must have been on PMS: rude and distracted. This is by far the BEST sushi and gourmet Japanese restaurant in LA, and probably one of the top 3 restaurants in all of LA in general. The preparation and attention to detail is off the charts. Scrumptious and delightful in every way. We chose the Omakase B meal and every dish presented to us was absolutely delectable. The Halibut Sashimi with Seasonal Fresh Truffle, and the Kanpachi Sashimi with Sesame Miso and Serarno Peppers is my favorite! So savory and every taste made to its perfection. One of the dishes served to us consisted of spinach, my husband who can't tolerate spinach managed to finish every leaf because the dressing was so exquisite, not too rich and tangy. We've complemented our meal with their House Sake and, it was simply divine. The dessert menu didn't entice me one bit, but can't complain too much especially when the courses are my main focus. This place including its teeny-tiny parking lot can get bustling after 7pm, so I suggest to make reservations early and take your time indulging in what ever your heart desires. So lucky to have dine here the same night George Clooney was there, and another time to have spotted the very funny Jack Black. Never mind the extravagant amount you have to pay for deliciousness. This place is definitely a treat. Service is beyond anything you will experience at any sushi bar outside of Japan; the only thing better than the service is the food. Yesterday was my second visit to this authentic japanese place. Second visit, doesn't always mean better choices. MY first mistake was going for "Choice A" omakase. If you're gonna go fancy, go all the way. Get the "Choice B or C". Don't low ball the good stuff. Choice A is full of the usual "fillers." Fried seafood, kampachi, yellow tail, etc. Don't get me wrong, they are superb quality dishes, but go all out. It's the only way to enjoy it. My recommendation... Go B or C and socalize with the chefs. If you send them love, they'll return the favor. It's a bit pricy, but it's what to be expected if you want to eat at a highly raved restaurant. read more

Highly over rated restaurant. There were 3 of us who wanted to try a new Sushi resturant recommended by a good friend. We are not big people, but after spending $285 including including tip, we realized that we had to get full on the rice, salad and soup. We only had 2 beers and no other drinks except tea. Basically, each item is bit sized and costs an average of $15 - $20. We ordered one order of crab legs that consisted of one crab leg -- four 3" pieces -- cost $46. The salmon sashimi was sliced very thin -- didn't give you much for $24 Wasn't the best I have eaten either. What a rip off. Especially in this economy!!! read more

I love Asanebo. They pay such detail to everything from miso soup to complex rolls. The sashimi was the freshest and most tender I have ever tasted. Their appetizers are all delicious. The only drawback is that this place is really expensive and the portions are on the small side. But the space is small and lovely, and the service is good. TOTALLY OVERRATED !!! This is the second time I go to Asanebo. The first time I did not like it, so I decided to give it a second chance to be able to understand the credits given. It failed the second time as well. My reasons are: YOU CAN GET EQUALLY GOOD QUALITY JAPANESE FOOD IN TOWN WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY SO MUCH. I ended up having a couple of dishes that I have tried better in other restaurants for less price. Without going to far, Kiwami across the street is a much better, cheaper and less pretentious restaurant. Asanebo do has a good atmosphere and service, but again nothing that you cannot find anywhere else. One of the best sushi house in L.A. I love Japanese cuisine. And this one is really good in a traditional way. If you like American style Japanese food, Katana might be something for you. But if you are more for the classical Japanese cuisine, Asanebo has a really good selection of sashimi and sushi. I love their blue crab and tomato salad, Lettuce and halibut is also super yumm! Okay so I turned to Yelp for a great Sushi joint to celebrate my anniversary. Asanebo had great views...so I checked it out. This place has unbelievable fresh fish and cool presentation. We ordered the house Saki which was really smooth but $18 for a Cup not a bottle is a little too pricey for me. I give this restaurant 3 stars because our bill came out to $150 and we were still left hungry. If your a sashimi kind of person this place is great, but if you looking for innovative or traditional sushi rolls I do not recommend Asanebo. read more

After the 400 dollar a person experience at Urasawa, and perhaps tied with the equally-good Kazu down the street, this is the best sushi in LA, and one of the best sushi restaurants in the world. Just came home from a PHENOMENAL dinner at Asanebo. Okay okay there were some course pacing issues. And they were out of uni. But it is a Sunday night... Started with the shishito peppers with bonito -- amazing. Followed with Miso soup with Sea Bass -- exemplary. I got the standards just to see: Halibut with Black Truffle and tomato -- fish was immaculate, truffle didn't overwhelm. Toro sashimi was flavorful, beautifully marbled, unctuous but had a nice bite. Kanpachi with yuzu was divine. There wasn't a single mediocre piece of food on the table. My partner got the sushi omakase, which for 60 buck was a terrific deal: 10 pieces of sushi (he got king crab and toro in the mix, but everything was great), the bass/miso soup, and two non-skimpy cooked apps. Asanebo is fusiony, and you have to be into that. If you are, it ranks with Zo (in my opinion). And the ambience and service trump Zo w/o question - really nice vibe, sweet waiters... This place sucks. I can't believe people gave this restaurant a high rating. The portion sizes are ridiculously small and very expensive. The rolls are the size of my thumb and were $9 each. I had them take the rolls back. Looking at the menu, nothing seemed appetizing so my friend and I ordered the chicken and green beans. Can't go wrong with that right? Wrong.. The chicken portion was the size of a stick-it note and they added a few green beans and a table spoon of sauce. These entrees were approx. $15 each. At this point my friend and had a beer each and decided to just accept the order. The place was crowded too. Unbelievable.. My ex-girlfriend and I would have sushi every week at various restaurants near Sherman Oaks and Studio City for a couple years and this place was the worst I have ever experienced. Very delicious and staffs are friendly. My only concern is that they use some vegetables and food from Japan. Many friends of mine actually don't even eat anything from Japan....I mean I am fine but at least I want to know which part of Japan they are from.... At least they should explain they are safe. Most expensive sushi I have ever eaten in my life but so worth it. While you are sitting there you see the guys coming in with coolers with different fresh fish that they are instantly making into sushi. The staff know their stuff and will guide you in the right direction. I have had things here I've never had anywhere else and the presentation is beautiful.
