Not good sushi. We got 9 different rolls and out of those 9, only 2 were decent. The rest almost tasted the same with a few exceptions that had repulsive flavor. Even the rolls that were good weren't good enough for the price. Their wontons were the only good thing but they were sweeter than most I've had and im not impressed cause how hard is it to make a wonton? We did carry out and when we showed up at the lobby we waited for a hostess or anyone to come and check on us. After waiting there for at least ten minutes while the waitresses looked at us but ignored us, I walked in to the extremely crowded albeit nice interior of the restaurant. It wasnt crowded cause they were so busy, it was crowded because they have crammed as many tables and chairs into that room as they can. I found a waitress at the bar and got my order. Everyone was friendly and helpful, except one domineering waitress who seemed to frighten the staff I interacted with. During COVID felt the place was safe and clean with servers following best practices to keep customers safe while also offering great customer service. They have all of the traditional rolls, but some really good unique ones to their location. I also asked for a custom handroll, something one of the sushi chefs could come up with for me. I love sushi but this place was just OK for me. We ordered four different rolls which included the Paris, super dragon, crunchy tuna, and green tiger rolls. I thought I had ordered the green tiger roll and that's what I was charged for but that's not what I received. I'm not sure what my fourth roll was. I liked the Paris roll with the mango but the other rolls were just OK. The crunchy tuna roll used imitation crab which in my opinion makes a sushi roll taste cheap and artificial. It looks like they've changed the menu from what other yelper have written about so maybe they're just trying to get used to this new menu. Cool place. Very good food. Only issue was that the music was too loud to have a conversation. We asked for them to turn it down, to which, the waitresses were lovely and amicable -- they assured us they'd ask the manager. The manager on duty refused. He was dancing behind the sushi bar and enjoying himself. It was "late night", after all. We couldn't hear each other without screaming, and there was only one other table -- they agreed -- they couldn't have a conversation either. The d-bag manager with a backwards army hat barked orders at the waitresses. They fired back- they felt they were being mistreated, and they were. We felt bad for them as it was right out in the open. The walking ego-trip behind the sushi bar held court with his limitless ego while everyone else suffered. It's unfortunate --a simple turn of the volume dial was a golden opportunity to employ basic customer service. Instead, lost business. Will not return. read more

I chose this restaurant to celebrate my soon-to-be son-in-law's birthday after reading the reviews. Good choice! The edamame with sea salt appetizer was plenty for the four of us. I loved their house salad--it had shredded carrots, mandarin oranges, tomatoes and lettuce with sesame ginger dressing. Miso soup also came with entrees. My donburi teriyaki rice bowl with steak and tempura sweet potatoes, asparagus and zucchini was delicious! My husband liked his chicken teriyaki with steamed rice and grilled vegetables. The other three shared five different kinds of sushi: the basic california roll, super dragon, playboy, unagi maki and spider with a variety of eel, crab, shrimp, tuna, salmon, and fish eggs. Ginger shavings and wasabi added all the flavor we could handle. We passed on dessert because we were full and were having birthday treats later. Kinda came an an unorthodox time. They are open on weekends until 12:30 and due to flying in late, this was one of the few options available on Saturday night. It was fairly packed for around midnight which felt like a good sign. They have some rolls that are cheaper between 10 - 12:30 so I ordered a few those. The presentation was clean and fish looked good quality so I was excited. Unfortunately, I was not a fan of any of the rolls I ordered. I forget the names of them, but honestly none of them had any flavor unless I dipped them in some sauce - which it felt like there was far too little of. Cute little restaurant, waiting area is nice, I liked that the lights were a little dim, waitress wasn't awesome! I started going to Asahi more than 4 years ago. I was thrilled with great options and taste. But in the last year things have definitely changed for the worse. Those preparing sushi are not as the first owners ( those being oriental) , these seem like nice gentleman that are Latinos. 2 months ago their face masks were barely on, today no face masks at all. Today's Asahi dishes seemed tasteless, no originality. Plus the prices have appeared to go up more than 15%. In my visit of today I arrived mid afternoon and was only 1 of 2 parties in the restaurant. The waitress seemed more interested in her cell phone than the customers. Sadly this is the last time we are coming to Asahi. The quality is just not there any longer you can have the same quality in a "all you can eat" restaurant for half of price. If wasn't enough they won't bring a beer to the table without the food notice, Utah law says that you have to order food if you want order beer in a restaurant but Asahi decided go one step further and don't server beer before the food gets to the table. It is very busy at night and I'm not sure if they take reservations. They do however serve sake, beer and cocktails. Sushi is on hit every time, udon is rich and satisfying. I've been coming to Asahi since 2014, and I loved the place. Since the new management book over, I like the new look of the restaurant, but not too impressed with the food, the lack of service from the newer servers, and the new plastic plates the sushi is served on. Especially when it's a slow night, you put in an order of 4 rolls, and the sushi chef gives you one roll at a time, while the server just let the plates stack up on your table. Kind of reminds me of eating sushi at those cheap all you can eat sushi places. The sushi is about the same, but I don't care for some of the minor changes.With tonkatsu dinner, the pork was on the dry side with plenty of flour coating with hardly any panko breadcrumbs on it which is just not the same as actual tonkatsu. I'm picky with my sushi, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that I wasn't impressed with Asahi. It's my first sushi experience in Utah so I don't have a local standard to compare it to, but I'd heard from many sources that it was the best spot in Utah County. I also was told that when I came, one of the top couple of sushi chefs in Utah would be there. I was looking forward to a great experience but was left quite disappointed. First of all, know that there is no omakase and that they don't offer much by the way of specials. Their on-menu fish options are few. So they don't go out of their way to get whatever is freshest and seasonal at the market. Nothing interesting, not even uni or good cuts of tuna. If you're looking for anything live, you're not going to find it here. Two of us shared the Ultra Kiss Combo (five pieces nigiri, five pieces sashimi, Playboy and Sundance rolls for $40). It I recall, the nigiri included ebi, mutsu, mebachi, sake, and hamachi. The sashimi was mutsu x2, hamachi x2, and a mebachi. The fish was sliced sloppily. The cuts were not clean and the thickness was not even between slices and even within the same slice. A couple of slices were cut with the grain rather than against it. The fish itself was unimpressive. Fresh enough that it didn't have a fishy taste, but it didn't seem like it came out of the ocean a week ago. The rice was packed a bit clumsily, too. The Playboy roll is shrimp tempura and avocado topped with tuna, eel sauce, spicy aioli, and tobiko. In theory. Ours had no eel sauce on or under it, and the aioli looked the part but tasted like straight mayo. The tempura batter was soggy and the roll cold, as if it had been the first thing on our platter that was made. The Sundance roll is a California roll topped with salmon, lemon, scallions, and a citrus soy sauce. This one definitely had a lighter, fresher feel, but I still was not a fan. Then again, I usually don't order rolls since I feel like they're an easy way to compensate for poor fish. I guess I'm still (half-heartedly) looking for great sushi in Utah. read more

I am typically very picky when it comes to sushi. Having lived in Japan for several years, I am very particular and I like to think that I really know good sushi. I usually gauge how great the restaurant is based on its sashimi and the taste of the fish. Was it prepared well? Does it taste or smell fishy? Does it melt in your mouth or is it gamey/chewy. The sashimi here ended up being pretty good. It didn't taste fishy or smell fishy which goes a long way. The fish itself seemed pretty fresh but did not really melt in the mouth as one would hope. We ordered the spicy edamame as well and the sauce on those is heavenly. The rolls that we ordered were pretty great too. We ordered the Vegas, volcano, California (not my idea), and the Paris rolls. The presentation of the rolls was great, but I would have loved to see some more creativity in the presentation and plate decor. We ended the night with the strawberry and chocolate mochis and the new york style cheesecake. The mochi ice cream was average. Good, but not amazing and the cheesecake was nothing special either. The service was pretty great. This is definitely one of the better sushi places in the area! read more

YES! Everything about this place is Y E S! They were so welcoming and professional. I love the vibe, very intimate and hip. The ikura tasted like I was in Japan again, the uni melted in my mouth (I don't even like uni, I've gave it a couple of chances in Japan, but I LOVED this one), the lemon and pink salt on the kampachi was amazing, the maguro was delicious, and shima aji was great too. The scallop/hotategai was nice and fatty, the smoke salmon was definitely smoked in house , the hamachi was some quality fish. We ordered the nigiri combo, and the chef gave us some specialty nigiri off menu. The Xanax roll is great if you like cream cheese in your rolls. The Crispy roll was great too, but the highlight of this place is definitely the nigiri (which is the authentic style anyway). We also had the privilege to try an off-menu chef's special of mutsu carpaccio that was torched and topped with a thin slice of jalapeño and tobiko with a garlic ponzu and yuzu dressing. And we had fried tempura ice cream to top it off with a berry purée and mango purée. This place is definitely the highest quality sushi in the area and a must-go! As soon as I told the manager that it was better than Tsunami, he informed us that the head chef actually used to work there and takes pride in his work here at Asahi improving upon what he has learned in the past. According to the reviews, this restaurant has great food. Unfortunately, I will never know. (note, this review is for their service, not food quality). The first thing to worry me - It's a sushi restaurant and there are no Japanese people working there. Not saying it's not possible, but normally - not a good sign. It was also close to the entree door, which left me wanting to keep my coat on. Come on! Space out the tables and leave some space by the door. OK, let's get on with the review. Staff - very friendly and polite. Atmosphere - Pretty good. Drove 45 min on Valentine's Day to try this restaurant. Ordered three rolls, soup & salad. How did they do? The soup and salad came out within ten minutes and tasted great. So far, so good. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. After 55 minutes still no sushi. Lots of pick-up orders being fulfilled, but nothing coming to our tables. I asked the waiter to either bring us some sushi or bring us the check. --- 15 minutes later still no sushi and not check. I finally stood up gave a waiter my credit card and asked him to charge my group for what we ate, which he did. Now I understand that restaurants get busy and they sometimes take too many orders and poor service is inevitable. But here is why I'm giving them a 1-star. It's how they handled the situation. When you overcommit and end up screwing one of your customers on a holiday like Valentine's Day...make it right. Don't charge them for the appetizer, send out the owner and apologize, offer them a free dinner. Do something to make up for dropping the ball and to keep them from bad-talking your restaurant. It's just typical 'restaurant service.' Anything to show you care. And then train your staff to follow the same protocol. I ended up going to Shoga Shushi, right around the corner. Great service and low pricing. They fulfilled the same order in 15 minutes. Final advice - if you're planning to eat at Asahi better pack a lunch. read more

We even knew all the waitresses who always remembered our drink and food orders. I don't know if they sold it to someone new or just "rebranded" but it's definitely gone downhill since then. The music is WAY too loud and gives the feeling more of a club than a sit down restaurant. The food has also gone down significantly, yet the prices are way higher. The manager, Ian, brought them out to us and noticed the wontons were a little on the crispy side , ( which was fine by us ) but he offered us another free appetizer on the house . Some of the freshest fish I've had. That alone impressed me more than anything else about our visit to Asahi. The rolls were really good, with well-thought out and somewhat unique combinations. A small-medium menu, with few choices other than raw. I can't help but talk about the food first, because it really was impressive. The miso soup was absolutely flawless and delicious. Probably the best I've had anywhere. I really wanted a second bowl, but resisted in anticipation of the forthcoming treats. Of course, we had to order the Sweet Jesus roll. How can you not? It was everything it was cracked up to be. Lovely, silky fish packed with delicious flavors. I will crave this roll. The Honeymoon roll was also mouthwateringly good. I don't normally prefer mango in most rolls because the mango itself is rarely served at its proper ripeness. This was perfect, and contributed beautifully with the jalapeno to this yummy roll. No need for additional sauce or wasabi. My least favorite roll of the night was the Heart Attack, and it was still really good. But it was deep fried - don't know how I missed that detail on the menu. I'm not a huge fan of the deep fried approach. Despite its preparation, we forced it right down and didn't hate a moment of it. The service was spot-on, very friendly and informative without being the least bit intrusive or neglectful. She was gracious and lovely, and made our evening even better. Very nice atmosphere dining in, with stylized lighting which made me squint a few times to read the menu. I liked it, though. It was nice for dinner. Sushi bar sat quite a few, and provided a TV behind. Small dining room consists of a few booths, and several tables. Despite its tiny size, it wasn't crowded on a Saturday night, but was steadily busy while we were there, with several to-go orders being carried away. My to-go order was messed up, waited over an hour and a half for the rest of the to-go order to be done. The sushi rice was hard, the scallops were gross & gritty. The rolls hardly had any fish. The price was high for what you get. Such a huge disappointment. Management has a lot of work to fix this place. The servers ignore the people waiting to be seated. The bathroom was super dirty too!
