Short version: If you want to learn to dance, this is THE place to do it. Detailed version: I surprised my wife for her birthday by taking her to Arthur Murray in Beaverton for an introductory lesson. We have been dancing now for over four years, and much to my surprise I enjoy dancing even more than she does. You start off with an inexpensive introductory package. The package usually consists of a group lesson, one or two private lessons and a practice party. In the group lesson, you spend 45 minutes learning and practicing the basic steps of two or three dance styles. If you come by yourself you will dance with instructors and other students, rotating dance partners every few minutes while you practice what you are shown. If you come as a couple, you can choose to dance with each other, or you can rotate, its always your choice. In the introductory private lessons you spend 30 minutes working directly with a professional dance instructor to hone your dance steps, learn new steps, and get all your dance questions answered. During practice parties they turn down the lights, creating a perfect place to practice your new dance skills in a pressure free and stress free environment. The staff dance with students and students dance with each other, with music and dance partners changing every few minutes. Again, If you come as a couple and wish to dance with just each other, you can do that too. The practice parties build your confidence to dance outside the studio... dance clubs...bars...weddings...elevators!....anyplace there is music. The best thing about Arthur Murray in Beaverton is everyone is so FRIENDLY. It doesn't matter if you are enjoying your first group class, private lesson or practice party, students that started dancing weeks, months, or even years ago will introduce themselves, ask you to dance, and make sure you have a good time. It truly is that fun and friendly a place. There are also Arthur Murray studios in Portland and Vancouver, and we often get together with everyone in one studio for bigger group lessons, parties and themed events. I know the staff and students at the Portland and Vancouver studios and they are every bit as incredible as Beaverton. Having said that, I'm partial to Beaverton, but that's probably because I live there. All three studios are owned by the same couple, and of course they are top notch dancers. I'm giving Arthur Murray 3 stars because it had some great things and some pretty poor things about it. I don't want to hate on the place entirely, they are good at what they do and they are all very friendly and nice. I just need to address a few things. My fiance and I went to AM for dance lessons for our first dance of our wedding. When we sat down with the manager to discuss the investment we were told 6 dance lessons would be sufficient to get us to a good place for our wedding. When you're already paying a lot for a wedding, finances become very tight so we heard 6 lessons and took them at their word. After our first 2 lessons it was very apparent our instructor was new and not yet very confident and I was worried and frustrated because things were just not moving fast enough. I reached out to the GM and she was super kind and understanding and switched us to an instructor with much more experience. Upon our first lesson with the new instructor, I determined pretty quickly the reason our first 2 lessons were so rough was that I was wrongfully instructed to use the opposite foot, which completely made it impossible to be able to do turns properly. Upon fixing the foot I could suddenly make turns at ease with 0 confusion. I mentioned to the instructor this issue with my jaw dropped a bit and I think she was a little uncomfortable and brushed it off saying "Well everyone makes mistakes." This is very true but when I'm paying $119 per 45 minutes of lessons that's a STEEP mistake to make and I don't find it very fair to brush it off. We moved forward and we soon accepted that maybe we wouldn't have the most perfect first dance in the world but we liked that our lessons gave us a base and we didn't NEED a perfectly choreographed dance. What was a bit frustrating was that the instructor kept nudging more and more lessons. We took 7 altogether. At one point I expressed some concerns that we might not be done in 6 lessons and the GM assured me, "we will make sure you're prepared in 6 lessons." But it felt like we were being told one thing by the GM and another by the instructor who kept pushing for more lessons. After the 7th lesson we were closer to the wedding and the finances were just not there to keep going to lessons. Our dance was not perfect but it was cute and fun and I'm glad we had more than just slow dancing in front of all our friends and family. So 3 stars because it all worked out but 3 stars because of some hiccups as well. read more

I've been dancing with Arthur Murray Beaverton for 9 years. Absolutely life changing. The staff, consistently are professional and welcoming. When I started, I was waitressing and the cost was something I was worried about but taking advantage of every free group class, party, and event I could elevated my learning curve allowing me to get the most out of the personal lessons I was paying for. Scary at first, and feeling uncoordinated is normal. Like any other skill, it took time. So I took all the time I could, and I became a dancer. Go in with the knowledge that dancing with the stars is a show, learning a skill takes time, and leave expectations at the door and allow them to do what Arthur a Murray has been doing for over 100 years. Seriously... 100 years. Don't spoil your experience by bringing in unrealistic expectations and enjoy the ride. I've never been more confident and felt sexy on the dance floor until I walked into Arthur Murray. Life changing. read more

I've been taking lessons for some time and I love this studio. Moving into April 2020, the physical studio is closed due to Covid-19 and I am missing my dance family so much. Their online presents has been really helpful to not fall too far behind my dance goals. They are always welcoming and knowledgeable group of instructors that show you how ANYONE can dance. I'm impressed they are able to translate their enthusiasm via Facebook and youtube videos for their students. I can't wait until we are able to be in the studio again. read more

WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY Arthur Murray managed to turn my favorite activity, dancing, into the most boring and pathetic experience ever. Extremely expensive in return for learning next to nothing. Clueless instructor, I knew more moves after I'd only been learning for a month in a different city. Instructor only knows basics so only recommend if you are about 100 years old and your ultimate goal is to take the same three steps over and over. Ridiculous pricing, over $100 for a private lesson of only 45 minutes when I can get a private lesson anywhere else with a national dance champion for $70 for a whole hour. One of the staff went as far as to say that you can't learn in group lessons which is why I'm apparently not allowed to do drop in group lessons without a private lesson as well. I have learned more in 5 mins of a group lesson than I learned in an entire 45 minutes with an Arthur Murray instructor. All they want is your money, DO NOT GO TO ARTHUR MURRAY IT IS A COMPLETE RIP-OFF AND YOU WILL LEARN NOTHING! read more

Arther Murray Dance Studio in Beaverton is wonderful. The instructors are amazing - patient, kind, friendly and know what they are doing. In addition to professional private lessons, the dance classes are included and the practice parties, which sometimes have fun themes. I can't say enough good things about Tom, Shannon, Taylor, Brennan, Phil, Jose and the rest. There is someone you will resonate with to help learn all of the dances that you want to learn and more. I won a free dance lesson here and was really surprised at how fun it was. The place was easy to find, though parking was really limited. Our instructor was really nice and friendly. We chatted with several other instructors and patrons and everybody was very friendly. We had a good time learning some new dances and all the other people there seemed to be having a great time. Love love love! I got the Groupon so that my fiance and I could practice a dance for our first song at the wedding. Our goal was to have a nice put together dance that would impress our guests. We loved our first two classes (which come with the Groupon) that we ended up signing up for 4 more! I would say even after 4 lessons we felt very comfortable. We worked with both Joseph and Aaron. Both were incredible. Very different teaching styles but we were immediately comfortable with both of them and were able to get a lot out of each lesson, each time building to make our first dance really special (an entrance, couple of different turns and THE dip!!) Shannon and Adam are a joy to work with. Always responsive to my emails and welcoming when you first walk in. Really everyone that works there is super nice. Even if you don't have a private lesson with some of the other instructors, they remember you and root for you. After we did our spotlight, everyone made us feel so good about it. Joseph and Aaron were giving us high fives and telling us how proud they were. The people that work here are genuinely good people. They make learning to dance really fun and easy. They are also really good about building your confidence and making you feel good. I have already got others the Groupon as a gift. This is a great thing to do as a couple and the people here are incredible. We enjoyed it so much that we are going to continue coming. My husband and I took classes so we could participate in my daughters wedding celebration. We are continuing. This is more than learning to dance. It's better than physical therapy, marriage counseling or going to a gym. The instructors at the Beaverton Studio are all so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. When you pay for one private class, you can attend classes throughout the week for free. I am so proud of my husband. He was a non-dancer and seeing him feel confident and progress is astounding to me. These classes are for all age groups. For those of us that are a little older, it helps with movement and brain skills. For the younger people, how fantastic it would be to learn ballroom and see how they can incorporate it into a free style on the dance floor.
