Tevaoriata is truly a beacon of cultural preservation, keeping the traditions of our Polynesian heritage alive with deep respect and authenticity. Seeing their diverse group take the stage and share their passion is inspiring, not just for the Polynesian community but for newcomers eager to learn and reconnect with their roots.
As a Native Hawaiian who grew up immersed in the culture, attending one of the first Hawaiian immersion schools, Anuenue, it fills me with pride to see Kumu Angie leading with such dedication. From a young age, she committed herself to learning the proper protocols and respecting the wisdom passed down by our leaders, ensuring that these traditions are shared in the right way.
Their recent performance at the inaugural Winterhawks event was a perfect example of why their mission is so important. Representing the Māohi and Māori tangata whenua alongside other Pacific Island cultures, they created a powerful and inclusive space where both islanders and non-islanders could connect through the beauty of dance, language, and storytelling. It's incredible to hear how their performances are sparking motivation in others--both kids and adults--to explore and embrace their heritage.
The mana and spirit they brought to that arena were undeniable, a testament to the hard work, heart, and responsibility they carry as vessels of cultural perpetuation. Tevaoriata isn't just a dance group; they are a movement ensuring that our Polynesian cultures remain present, vibrant, and respected for generations to come.
Māuruuru roa to Kumu Angie and her dancers for their dedication, and to the Winterhawks for providing a platform to celebrate and uplift our Pacific Island cultures. Looking forward to seeing more from Tevaoriata as they continue their incredible work! read more
