My husband and I have taken private lessons from Dominic at Arthur Murray and also attended group classes. We in our 70s and didn't dance before, so it was challenging for us to learn. I was very nervous about social dancing. Dominic is a patient, clear teacher, incredibly clever at seeing and helping us correct our difficulties as we learn a dance. All the teachers are friendly and cheerful. Dancing has been great gentle exercise, and we always have fun. Recently, we rented the studio venue for an anniversary party for about 60 people. The space was more than adequate for that crowd, plus we had plenty of room for dancing, the buffet line, and the large photo booth. Dominic is great to work with and knows events. Cost was quite reasonable. He was on hand to help us with details. The studio provided set-up tables, chairs and linens. There is also a kitchen with a pass-through window and we put our beverages in their refrigerator. There is a big TV in the larger dancing room, and we ran a slide show there, which guests enjoyed. Their first "free" dance lesson is indeed a sales pitch so be prepared for that. Once you make it past that however, the private lessons are well worth the money. Being kind of shy dancers, we were apprehensive about group lessons. Having experienced both group and private lessons, we have already gained more confidence. The group lessons are not nearly as embarrassing as we thought it would be. They are separated by skill level and the beginner group lessons are in fact, composed of beginners. The instructors that they have are very cheerful and encouraging, so it really eases the transition of dancing in front of other people. You can go by yourself or with a partner, but expect to switch and dance with other people. It's not as bad or as awkward as we thought it would be because everyone is at the same level so they were pretty supportive. We had our first private lesson last night and it was pretty awesome. Our instructor was not intimidating and extremely patient. She worded her statements for us in understandable terms and really helped us. So, I've only recently begun to write on here, and I feel bad about another bad review, as I've been told it's the first step to me being an old woman writing angry letters, but here goes... While in college, my boyfriend had the idea to get us dance lessons together for Valentine's Day one year. Super excited, we went for our first lesson, which was OK. Then at the end, we were taken into an office and hard pressed to buy a package. Mind you, we already had a package with 10 or so individual lessons and a couple of group lessons. So, we told them we would wait to see what we thought. A little put off, but we could deal. Then we go back for the second lesson, same deal. At this point, we weren't sure if we wanted to go back. Shortly after that lesson, I had a major car accident, totaling my car. This was also our senior year of school, and I was applying to grad schools in other states and my boyfriend was applying to law schools. We weren't sure at that time what city or state we would be in in a few short months, but knew we wouldn't be in the same place. So, needless to say, dance lessons were on the bottom of the priority totem pole. However, those sharks at Arthur Murray had difficulty understanding that. They called me relentlessly until I finally called them back, chewed them out, and explained why we hadn't come back in for more lessons, and no, we didn't want to buy anymore from them at this time! Everytime we drive by or dance lessons are mentioned, both my boyfriend and I shiver. Now I don't know how I will get him to take lessons when we get married. read more

If I could give stars to the instructors alone I would. CrystalP is amazing at what she does, we love her. However, the studio manager or owner, Dominique, is an unprofessional and unfriendly individual. He called to get my feedback after I requested to speak with him and he was condescending and rude via phone. He told me 'sorry your interpretation was incorrect' but 'private' does not mean your own room. The entire time we spoke he told me that I was incorrect on what I experienced, how can you tell someone their experience was incorrect? BEWARE: they advertise private lessons and then have multiple couples in the room with you during that lesson, you have your own instructor but you have to wait in the rotation for your music to be played. So a 45 minute lesson becomes much shorter. No where on their materials does it specify this nor do they explain it to you when you go to sign up. We chose Arthur Murray out of 3 different studios and had it not been for Dominique's attitude and crude behavior we would have given it 5 stars while noting the false advertisement on what he see's as 'private lesson.' Learn some customer service skills Dominique. Couples looking to get lessons, find somewhere else. My husband and I received a Groupon for Arthur Murray Dance Studio in the Hub shopping center a week before our wedding. The owner of the studio, Dominic was so accommodating in getting us in at the last minute for private lessons. He asked for our first dance song and choreographed a dance that we were able to do. I had wanted to have our first dance be something more than just swaying and it was absolutely perfect. At the end we had a big dip that left everyone applauding. My DH bought me dance lessons for my birthday from this studio. We have gone to one dance lesson and it was wonderful! The instructor was GREAT and the people at the studio very friendly. We were both pretty uncomfortable since we are in no way "dancers" but this studio was all about having fun and being together and that is what we did. I also liked that it was all adults and not a "kid" studio. There were a variety of students at all different levels and we really appreciated that service. We had a package and were never pressured to buy additional but we will see when our package is close to being done :) read more

We had our wedding and reception at Arthur Murray. Many people were surprised that I picked a dance studio, but when they got there, they understood. This place was perfect. Lizz is a fantastic instructor and the whole staff is friendly and welcoming. Their new space is spacious and nice with lots of free parking. They have adult socials as well as classes for adults and kids. They've created a dance community with the instructors and students and we're glad to be joining it. Reading some of these aged reviews reminds me of the old Ford commercials, "Have you driven a Ford lately?" Same thing here. Arthur Murray Dance Studio is a great place for beginners to learn how to dance. They have classes on ballroom and club dancing. The staff and students are very friendly and are eager to share with you steps to improve your dancing. They do have private classes for more advance students but you can sign up for just group classes if you just enjoy dancing. read more

I love this place! We (my husband and I) started by purchasing a Groupon for 2 private lessons and 1 group lesson. I enjoyed it so much that we have found a way to keep taking lessons! Dominic is our teacher and he's fantastic! All the instructors are great though. We both feel like we are dancing much much better than we ever were before...now if only we could find time to go more often! After searching for affordable wedding reception venues, I stumbled across Arthur Murray Dance Studio in one of those Austin Wedding Guide books. From the start, Frank and Dominic were amazing and accomodating to work with. We were allowed to bring in our own vendors, but they do have the option of providing dj services as part of the price of renting the venue. However, if you don't use the services, they take off part of the rental price. We had a small reception (about 85 people) and they provided the tables, chairs and linens and also set them up for us. There is a small kitchen area where we had our "bar" set up. There is also a smaller room where we set up our food. The best part was that at no extra fee, we were able to come set up almost everything early in the day since our wedding ceremony was at night and in South Austin. The following day we went and picked up the rest of the glasses, decorations, etc. This is a great venue for someone looking to "do it yourself" for a smaller size wedding, but they were also extremely helpful in setting up and tearing down. read more

I went into this not knowing how to dance, not feeling rhythmic at all, and not comfortable on a dance floor. My spouse is far better than me but not very knowledgeable on any specific dance steps. She was optimistic that we'd be better able to dance at weddings and outings if we learned a some county dance steps, and perhaps some salsa. Anyway, all of this is to set up that while I'm an optimistic person by nature, I wasn't expecting a great experience out of this. Fortunately, we ended up working with Dominic. He is not only an amazing dancer, he is a calm and insightful instructor with a great sense of humor. I found myself looking forward to our lessons. Dominic helped us find songs to practice with, and for some of the turns that completely confused me, he had me video him and my spouse with my phone so that I could play it back during practice at home, and avoid frustration and confusion. Dominic didn't turn me into a competitive dancer (even if that was possible, and I'm not so sure, we didn't put that much time and energy into it), but my wife and I can without hesitation take the floor for almost any song, look good, and most importantly, have fun while dancing. Folks watching often think we know what we're doing! And, amazingly, we can handle much more than country and salsa steps! By the way, if you take lessons with Arthur Murray, there are several free sessions you can attend each week to learn and practice specific dance steps. We did that a few times and found it fun. Plus, we met some of the other instructors. They each seem to have a slightly different approach to teaching but I found them to be uniformly nice, fun to work with, not judgmental, and really helpful. If you're into country dance, they arrange occasional outings to dance bars so you can practice "in the wild" but with a supportive group around you. If you do already dance well, I imagine that you'll be able to take advantage of their focus on competitive dancing. If, on the other hand, you are an beginner, like I was, I believe you'll be amazed at what they can do. I recommend them to everyone. read more

We signed up for dance lessons before our wedding just expecting to learn some basics and get help with choreography. We were so impressed - Arthur Murray far surpassed our expectations! Lizz is an AMAZING teacher!!! She choreographed a beautiful dance which was the highlight of our wedding. We had a blast learning to dance together and performing. More than that, it taught us so much about each other as individuals and a couple - how to work together as a team and to trust each other. I'm so glad we found this studio and Lizz. Lizz is an insightful and adaptable instructor. She zeroes in on your personality and learning style to built a rapport with you to solve your fears of dancing almost immediately. If she sees you at a bar where people are dancing and you're not dancing, she will come over and remind you to get moving and take you for a spin - if that's not dedication to her students than I don't know what is! I highly recommend Lizz if your primary objective is overcoming the fear of social dancing. I used a Groupon and decided to stay enrolled after it expired because of Lizz. A Story About Amanda....we had a wedding planned and in 10 years together had never managed to dance well together. We're old and had danced our whole lives with other partners. We had Two bad experiences with the "other" dance studio in town. It seemed more like a singles bar than a real place where real people, not glamor types, learn to simply dance together, not pick someone up. We told Arthur Murray our problem and they listened and met us at the door ready to work with us both. We had our song and Amanda created a simple Cha Cha to it. And she worked with us on a simple waltz. We Love her. She is fun and pretty and patient and the girl can switch from a male lead to a female lead in a heartbeat. My experience with Arthur Murray was bittersweet. They advertise $99 group class lessons for 3 consecutive months, but then sometime after your first month, they start pressuring you to take private lessons - $80 for 40mins, yikes! I guess that's how they lure you in. The owner, Dominic, told me, when I paid for my 3rd group class, if I didn't start taking private lessons, I would not be able to continue taking group classes at the $99 a mo rate. When I went back to get clarification that day, he confirmed and said private lessons are to "polish" ones technique. When I told Dominic I was not interested in becoming a professional ballroom dancer, compete professionally or become an instructor, he continued to tell me group classes are not meant to learn how to dance but to enhance what we've learned in private classes. At one point during my last month, I had mentioned to Dominic You Tube has videos of certain dance genres and they make it look easy. He told me it may seem easy when I'm dancing with my "inflatable doll" but it's not. He also discouraged me, my last week, taking a Bronze level course (C/W Swing) if I didn't know the basics - this is after I consistently attended every newcomer/intermediate/bronze level class there was for the past 3 mos. All in all, I had a lot of fun mingling with the other group class members, meeting new friends, learning new dances, and most of the instructors - David & Fabian are great and fun to work with (including Frank he's fun to talk to). Unfortunately for any single guys, currently there are no experienced female instructors to take private lessons that can help "polish" your technique. It would be "the blind leading the blind" situation. If anyone decides to enroll in group classes, beware and anticipate the pressure of taking private lessons. Dominic will come across as nice, and he can be, but keep in mind he's looking after the best interest of his studio. That being said, these are true and accurate opinions of my three months taking group classes at Arthur Murray (May-July'12). I went from not dancing anything to learning various genres with great male instructors, but it was very unfortunate I could not continue. read more

Arthur Murray dance studio gave my husband and me the tools to create special memories on our wedding day in the form of our first dance. We kept the first dance a secret from our friends and family for over 6 months and the room could not have been more surprised when we first started dancing. We heard cheers, claps, and gasps the entirety of our dance. Every table we visited afterwards commented on how impressed they were. Our dance instructor was Lizz and she was the perfect fit for us. She has a spunky personality that is fun to be around. She also is great at communicating and teaching in different ways that makes sense to the learner. Once you start dancing with Arthur Murray it is like you are gaining a second family; the group is really close-knit and takes care of one another.
