A Socially Responsible Company…read more This employee of Hubinger yelled "Fuck gay people" at me as he drove past me (apparently in response to a "love is love" bumper sticker on my car). I contacted Hubinger in the hope he would be educated and warned by Hubinger that this is unacceptable and in the hope that they did not tolerate or condone hateful, homophobic behavior in their employees. I was contacted by Hubinger who apologized for their employee's behavior and promised to address this situation. I was glad to see a company taking this seriously. It may seem a small thing, but this kind of behavior, multiplied over and over again, creates an unsafe community for LGBT people and contributes to an epidemic of depression and suicide.

I guess I'll be prepared when I move to "the most dangerous city in America", St. Louis. But I digress... Jelenek's is a very cool place and has been around at least as long as I've been alive. My mom used to take us here to stock up on our annuals, vegetables and seeds for the garden. Once I was a little older and wiser, I figured out how to buy flower flats myself and gave Mom a Mother's Day treat of planting the front yard for her. Not quite a surprise the next 15 years that I did it, but every year she was thrilled with the flowers and how nicely they held up all summer. Jelenek's is family-owned if my memory serves me and I love the long-haired Crystal Gayle-esque woman who works there. She's a sweetheart in her big-brimmed gardening hat, full of knowledge and happy to help. They've got a nice selection of seeds, plenty of soil, mulch and tools and I'm pretty sure they have perennials as well. I always enjoy pushing my unwieldy cart through the gravel paths and admiring all the colorful annuals. The greenhouse vegetables at Jelenek's have never failed me and always yield hefty harvests (at least in my experience). The only trouble I've ever encountered was the time I thought I bought sweet banana peppers, but they turned out spicy as hell. When that's your biggest beef with a down-home, country gardening store, you're in good hands.

Monday came and i never heard from them, so I called Tuesday at 8am and spoke to Tom and told me my order was in. I verified my name and let him know we'd be in to pick it up by noon. After making the drive out there, we were told our product was sold to another customer who they "assumed"ordered it. They did not have or product marked and obviously did not check the name with the person who bought it. We were offered no compensation or guarantee that this would not occur again if we re-ordered. Basically we were told " oh well" by Tom. After 10 years of shopping here, crown feed has lost me as a customer. The way this was handled was incredibly unprofessional and unorganized. I will take my money to a more reliable company from this point on.

Leaf after leaf, buds falling off....NO! I have been raising these guys for nearly 50 years and know exactly how to care for them. Were they on sale because they knew they were inferior quality? Either way, of the 4 that I bought, none look any good and will most likely die. I am very disappointed in Alsip nursery...believe me, I will continue to buy my plants from HOME DEPOT....I've NEVER lost one from there.
