The prices here are slightly higher than some of the other resale shops. Like any resale or thrift shop the merchandise is always revolving so it helps to go more often to see what they got in. The store seems to be divided in a few different areas. One area is a thrift store area and there are other areas that are consignment areas. The consignment areas may have new items, vintage items, or collectible thrift items.

I stumbled upon this record shop by accident last week (right by the Lansing airport) and was kind…read moreof taken aback. I have no idea how long they've been in business, but this place is a must considering how few record shops there are in the south suburbs. They have an extensive selection of LPs as well as used audio equipment. I had my eye on a few uncommon (but not super-rare) records and found them within minutes. Unfortunately, they were all $10 each, which is higher than I've seen anywhere else. I'm not an expert on record stores, so maybe that's not crazy, but I was a little shocked how many records were in the $7.50 to $10 range given their conditions. (There are also $3 and $5 records, but not as many.) $6 each for CDs is also pretty insane. So I'm docking them one star in that regard. Part of the charm of a record store is the crusty employees who are more than willing to give their opinion on what you listen to, regardless of if you've asked for it. Rest assured, the lady working there was pleased to tell me she hated one of my favorite bands. That ticked me off, but she does know her stuff and happily offered some suggestions of bands I might like that I've never heard of.

Bought a beautiful vintage Philips turntable from Illiana Music listed on Reverb. This was at the…read moreend of February, 2020. The turntable arrived a later... ..but was completely destroyed, because the heavily weighted platter had not been secured, was easily able to lift off the half inch tall spindle, and acted as a wrecking ball to demolish the tone arm, snapped off the tone arm rest, cracked the stylus, broke off the needle, inflicted massive gauges in the top platform off the turntable, and was able to damage mechanical components to the point of rendering it a total loss. My loss of well over $100 was not great.. ...but much more sad was that a beautiful, 50 year old piece of classic hi-fi history had survived graciously for decades.. ...only to be senselessly demolished because of a simple lack of effort (and respect) to pack securely. All turntables have a provision to allow you to lock the springs, remove the platter and place it under the cabinet to prevent this damage. Very simple and takes all of 2 minutes. The shipping box had no damage... ..it's just that during handling, if not held perfectly still at all times, the platter will lift and freely bounce around inside the dust cover... ..and the platter is nearly 75% of the entire turntable's weigh and will easily bulldoze anything it can reach... ..and it certainly did just that. I wrote Illiana Music about the total destruction immediately, then several more times with no response. In May (3 months later) I finally received a response that the owner had a death in the family and someone else had been handling selling and shipping. As much as I can relate to loss of family, Illiana Music had no problem taking my money but not taken responsibility for their neglect and failure to deliver what I paid for... ..have they made any effort to compensate my total loss of money I gave them. I've written twice since, it is now going on 4 months, no further response and I've lost well over $100.. due to Illiana Music's complete negligence, zero customer service, zero responsibility for losses because of their poor service, and totally ignoring my communication. Hate to say it but.... WHATEVER YOU DO, ***STAY AWAY FROM ILLIANA MUSIC... FAR AWAY!***

The only downside to Etc... is that there isn't a changing room, so you have to take a chance and hope that your $4.99 clothing item actually fits you. I put back several things because I wasn't able to try them on, and my rampant body dysmorphia was telling me I probably would not fit into that petite extra-small blouse, even though it was very cute and looked like it might fit. Oh well. My children did find a handful of Wii games for $1 each, though, and they were super excited. This is a good thrift store to give kids a few dollars and let them go wild. They'll find something, for sure. The proceeds for Etc... goes to a local Christian school. They sell mostly clothing, which take up the entire right side of the store. On the left side of the store is furniture, home goods, frames, kitchen items, toys and games, and even magazines. There are lots of things to paw though, at great prices.

AS A CUSTOMER: This is not a bad thrift store. They have…read moresome high end furniture, things are well laid out, and clean. AS A CONSIGNOR: If you are planning to sell your items here, READ THIS FIRST. I think I've figured out this places business model. When you sell your items at Michael's, 1) you have to take pictures of the items, 2) they decide if they want to sell the items, 3) then you have to sign a contract, 4) then they will accept the item to sell. THE CONTRACT: The items are for sale at their store for a period of time (I think its like 3 months), then you have 5 days to pick up the items. IF YOU DONT PICK UP YOUR ITEMS, THEY TAKE POSSESSION OF YOUR ITEMS. I do not envy anyone running a thrift store, or consignment shop. This is not an easy business to run, peoples stuff is dirty, peoples stuff doesnt sell, you have to keep track of who gets paid, etc. I get it. I know lawn mower repair shops, automotive service shops, and storage places have similar policies; If you dont pick your stuff up, they take possession and throw it away, or get rid of it, or sell it. This policy is to encourage people to come pick up their sh**. All that being said; what I think Michael's is doing is betting on you not coming to pick your stuff up within that window of time, so they can take possession of your items and sell it without having to pay you your commission. WHAT HAPPENED TO ME: I took two items in to be sold; one sold, one didnt. I called them and told them I would be in next week to pick up the item. She said "thats fine" and didnt say anything about the 5th day window (which I knew about and had remembered from the contract, which is why I called). I came on the 7th day, and she said "oh, sorry, the 5 day window is up. The shop takes possession of the item," which I thought, meant they had thrown my item out. As Im walking out, I see my item in the window. THE ITEM WAS STILL THERE BUT THEY WOULDNT ALLOW ME TO TAKE IT. MY THEORY: So this is what I think they are doing. You give them an item and a price you want to sell it for, and they double the price when they put it on the sales floor; so they are earning 50% of the final sale price if the item sells. The problem is, when 50% is added onto what I want to sell the item for, it bumps the price beyond what most people are willing to purchase the item for (a $150 becomes a $300 dollar bed). After the time passes and the item doesnt sell, they dont inform the consignor that the time is up, 5 days pass and they take possession of the item (per the contract). At this point, they can drop the price down where ever they want the price to be. If you brought in a bed, that was marked at $300 and didnt sell, the second the 5 days pass, and they take possession, they can mark the price of the bed down to $150 (a more reasonable price) and make just as much through the sale as if they sold the item for $300 and had to pay a commission. So I think, they have created a situation where they are "banking" on consignors not being able to make it back to the store within that 5 day time frame, and then repossessing the items, then pricing the item more reasonably and, finally, making their money by cutting out the consignor. It just seems like a simple solution would be for them to send out a reminder email that the deadline is coming up, and the consignor should pick up their item. This store has a good inventory item, I dont think this is too much to ask... or be a little flexible on the 5 day window, instead of strong-arming people out of their items. I would love to see a break-down of how many items they are actually selling when the consignor is involved compared to how many items are sold after the items have been repossessed. My guess is, the majority of the items in the store have been repossessed from a consignor, and the majority of the revenue earned by this shop is from items they have repossessed. And if that is the case, all the complaints about the employees treating the customers like thieves would make sense; the employees are probably watching to see that the consignors do not come to take back their items. CONCLUSION: There is no way I would sell with this store again, especially items of a higher value. It is much easier to sell through Facebook Marketplace on my own, than deal with this place. If you are planning to sell large amount of items, or expensive items, I would recommend steering clear of this place. If you do not come back within the 5 day window, they will take possession of your items and resell them. Sell on FB Marketplace, or The Shopper. If you dont care about your items, and you are selling large quantities of things that you dont plan to pick up after the sale, ok, I could see that.
