So, I got my next picture framed and they did it WRONG and as they CUT off the piece they weren't meant to i'm severely annoyed. What to do? I've been stopping by Art Frame Studio over the years just to look at the art work inside. However, I hadn't gotten anything framed until just a few weeks ago. I needed a thick 8x10in oil painting framed within a few days for an exhibition. I ended up picking the very first frame that D.C. insisted. It was a frame that locked onto the canvas without pushing in the oil paint on the outer sides. It looked perfect with it. After D.C. had given me a receipt, he said it could take over a week, because it is customized. I said I needed it a lot sooner if at all possible. D.C. gave me a call the next couple of days and told me it was done. I was so impressed with the work and surprised that he managed to squeeze my project in so soon. I won't be taking my business elsewhere and I'll always ask for D.C.'s opinion first. I highly recommend Art Frame Studio. read more

Let's begin by saying I'm pretty amateur at things related to framing. I bought a 50x75 inch canvas painting from a local artist in LA. The plan was to get it "gallery wrapped" (the term I picked up from the artist) locally here in the south bay to avoid high shipping costs. Now the artist I bought from called this store about a month ago and requested a price quote. The owner gave her a price of $300. Two days later I called and asked the same question and was given a quote of $325. 25 bucks quote difference didn't bother me much. 2 weeks after that, I visited this store on Saturday 10/10. The guy "Paulo" who was at the front desk took the measurements, went inside to talk to the owner, came out and said it would cost us $590 + tax. I told him that the quotes they gave earlier for the same dimensions and framing specs were way lower. The owner at that point came out and said its fixed prices and they can't do anything lower. The lad Paulo went on to say that they were the most reasonable store out there and that Michaels would charge me about $1000 bucks for this size (Yea right!). On insisting that this was not what they said earlier, they went in, penciled it again and re-priced it to $450 + tax. Such inconsistency in their words in a matter of minutes! I simply left the store and checked out Aaron brothers, they are framing it for $327. I think they figured I'm a newbie and wanted to take me for a ride, despite having given me a different quote on phone. I'm very disappointed by their cheap, dirty tactics and lies. read more

I've now had a total of three posters custom framed here and every single one has turned out perfect. The owner is incredibly patient and helpful in selecting different frames and boarders. I never felt rushed and he seems genuinely interested in making your poster, art, etc. shine. The work is done very quickly and at the highest quality. They will provide you service as slowly or quickly as you desire. - It was my first set of "real" frames, custom fit and made to order. It was expensive, and I'm not sure how the pricing compares to other similar stores. But I'm definitely happy with the product and how much care went into the service. Got my diplomas framed here a few weeks ago. The husband and wife that run this little shop are incredibly nice and patient. I first came in just looking for a price estimate, and they sat down with me for a good 30 minutes so I could see all the options. Ended up coming back again for another 30 minute session to finalize all the details, including the matte colors, the borders, the wood, and the glass. I was a little price-sensitive, but I figured I would only be doing this once, so wanted to do it right. This is definitely going to be more expensive than just buying a nice frame from Walmart, but the quality is on a whole different level. These folks also haven't raised prices in years, and their pricing is carefully laid out and fully transparent. You get what you pay for, and I'm so proud to hang these up in the house. If I ever have important documents or pictures to frame, I'll definitely be returning. read more

There are a lot of places you can go to buy a frame. There are precious few that will make you a work of art. I brought a few masks back with me from South Africa, and I sat down with D.C. with the masks, and we sketched out a few ideas of how we could display them. After a few minutes, it was obvious to me how passionate he was about his work, and how dedicated he was to his craft. 45 minutes later, we had a design set, and he showed me his pricing sheet. He's very transparent about his costs, and we had a subtotal very quickly. I was given an estimated completion date of two weeks, and then I paid and left, knowing that I'd put my trust in good hands. Two weeks later, I came back to pickup my piece, and I was floored. It was better than I was expecting. There were no surprises, as it was exactly what we'd discussed, but to finally see it in person was something else. He'd brought a sketch and half-an-idea to reality. My only problem now is that the frame is nicer than the masks! Breakdown: Craftsmanship: 9/10 - There are a few places where the veneer isn't perfectly aligned, but that's more to do with materials used than construction. Cost: 8/10 - Transparent pricing structure with no hidden costs, but not cheap. You're getting what you're paying for, and you know what you're paying before you get it. Timeliness: 10/10 - I was told two weeks, to let them display it in their window for a while, and, after exactly two weeks, it was ready for me to pick up. Service: 9/10 - The only issue I'd had was that the lady of the shop was rather insistent that I leave a Yelp review for their business. Not that they really needed it, with all the other 5 star reviews here. Overall: 10/10 - Will use again next time I have something to frame. Or box. Or display. read more

I brought back an original oil painting by an artist from Guangzhou. When I first saw the framed oil painting at the art gallery in Hong Kong, I found myself drawn to it. It was a relatively wide painting so that meant I couldn't bring it framed on to the airplane. So I took a picture of the frame so I could replicate the visual at home. I stopped by Aaron Bros again and again they weren't that helpful since they had a line of people framing movie posters. Then I remembered that there was an art framing store on Castro and I stopped by. The store owners, husband and wife team, were very patient and helpful with choosing a frame, mat vs inner frame, and other options. I told them that I wanted to recreate the visual that attracted me at the art gallery. The husband is an artist (I found out later and specializes in drawing horse paintings in the chinese black ink and brush style) was patient and explained to me the advantages and disadvantages of mat mounting an original oil painting and why people frame mount oil painting. (sorry, I'm an art challenged engineering major) After we passed art 101 and tried a few different frames, his wife came by and suggested a frame/inner color combination that improved on the visual that I had hoped to create. Long story short, the result was a very serene oil painting. They even hung it in the window for the two days it took me to pick it up! Things I learned: 1) oil paintings should be stretched to frame to preserve the canvas from damage 2) oil paintings on frame are typically combined with a frame without glass or acrylic so people know that it is a oil painting and not just a print. My painting was mounted behind UV glass because I wanted to hang the painting in a room with large southern facing windows. read more

This place is a real find. We had a family portrait to frame. The husband is clearly very talented and helped us to choose a wonderful frame which was made to order while we waited. The price was definitely reasonable (less than we expected to pay). We used the 15 minutes to browse the extensive gallery that features a wide variety of framing styles. I have lived in Mtn. View for over 20 years and have probably walked past this place 100 times without noticing it. When we needed to find a framing service, I reflexively thought "Los Altos" or "Palo Alto". I've had two medium to large scale prints framed here. They're from limited runs making them irreplaceable. One of them is large enough to push the limits of available glass and matte size and I knew both were going to be quite expensive to frame due to wanting museum glass to protect them. Because of those factors I hoped to give my business to someone that has a lot of experience. Art Frame Studio is only a few blocks from where I live and I have passed by admiring their work in the window for many years. I have seen many large scale and complex jobs go through their display. They seemed the logical choice and I'm glad to say it worked out great. The owners are really nice and the whole process was smooth. They let me take my time deciding on my frame selection and design, being patient and providing helpful suggestions along the way. They were transparent about pricing and even game me the old, lower price on one of the frames which was getting marked up for the first time in years. Turnaround time was actually ahead of their prediction. Framing these pieces was a bit of an experiment for me to see if I felt like it was worth the expense in the end. Because of the quality of their finished work I came away satisfied it was and I'll definitely work with them again. In fact I just received another piece I'm planning to bring by today and I have another one on the way. My only regret is that soon I will be out of wall space. read more

Just go there! I learned a lot before finding these guys. I needed a fairly large piece framed, 25x35. And I needed it framed in a matter of 9 days or less. I've never spent money on framing... I'm sure your laughing now. When Aaron brothers told me $500 w/coupon, I swallowed heavily. Buy if they could do it, I would pay. "Not in less than 2 weeks." That's what they said. Then Michael's had a bigger number and same time frame. "Not in less than 2 weeks." Turns out they both send to the same "factory" for their work. When Art Frame Studio said they could do the time frame, I brought it in. I spent about half an hour selecting frames and styles, ultimately very happy with what I chose! I could have easily spent more, but ended up spending less than both big stores offered and got something much better. I was told it would be ready the following Friday, 1 week. They called on Wednesday, it was ready before me! I just picked up the piece, and it's amazing! The frame turned out as good as I expected. The advice I received really helped produce a perfect piece. It's good to know that it was made on-site, and they stand behind their work. No factory to deal with, and no excuses or someone else to blame. It was wrapped to protect the corners, and looked amazing. Some places just deserve a good review. These guys deserve a great review! Prices are very fair; they will break down the costs for you and work with your budget (as long as you come in with a reasonable estimate). Lots of selections in terms of frames, mats, type of framing, etc. They do it all. Turnaround time is pretty quick. They give you an estimate of about 2 weeks, but my print was framed in about 1.5 weeks. I wasn't in a rush either. *Note: The store is located on Castro St, so street parking may be hard to find. I have been frequenting Art Frame Studio off and on for the past 5 years, framing either certificates, diplomas, or pieces of art I collect from travel. I'd say roughly 95% of the things in my home that aren't 4x6 or 5x7 have been framed by the owner DC. Anyway, I keep coming back because the service is always fantastic. Even though my frames and tastes aren't the world's most expensive, they treat each one like it is, spending lots of time going through the frame, matte, glass, etc, balancing out their expert opinions with my tastes. When I return later to pick up my frames, I always feel great pride in the finished product as I walk home to immediately place it on one of my walls. I wrote a very positive review for this place a while ago and it seems to have disappeared. Here's what I've said elsewhere: "Lovely people, excellent work, reasonable price. Stop in to look at the beautiful art on the walls. Exceptional treatment in framing pet photos. Full archival framing available, UV glass, etc. They know their business, care about their customers. Ask to see the "Fade test" and you'll see why UV glass is worth the price. Highly recommended." There are a couple of other reviews if you go through Google Maps. I don't know what the miscommunication was with Sally E., but this isn't typical of the work done here. I wonder if she tried to talk to them about it? While you can't uncut something, I'd be surprised if they hadn't tried to make amends somehow. I still recommend them highly. read more

Shopped around before using them. They are very competitive in pricing, but the best part is D.C.'s (the owner) customer orientation and concern to meet your needs.
