As a lifelong lover of both art & horror, I couldn't resist attending an Art of The Living Dead art show in my neighborhood for Halloween! So much talent but one piece immediately caught my eye, and from the moment I saw it, I knew it was coming home with me! The painting's composition is absolutely mesmerizing. I might be a little biased since teal is one of my favorite colors--but the way Boris uses it here is just perfect. Boris' use of teal to outline the zombie's hair and body creates a striking contrast against the more subdued tones of the piece. This teal is rich yet ethereal, giving the figure an almost otherworldly presence--like a spectral being suspended between life and death. It feels like the subject exists in both worlds at once, capturing that perfect eerie beauty that defines this genre of art. Equally impressive is the background. The black-and-white contrast feels both simple and complex at once, complementing the figure perfectly. Like most people who want custom artwork, I searched online for a professional artist, a local one would be even better. Of course there were a plethora of options but Boris is one of the few that stood out and came with referrals, a guarantee(which you don't get much of) and a reasonable price. By "reasonable" I don't mean cheap... You know what they say, you get what you pay for and this was by far, the most expensive gift I have ever bought for someone. But, when compared to other artists of the same skill level, his pricing seemed fair. I was really going to use one of those cheap portrait painting services from China. They seemed legit and the price was as expected, too good to be true. But a friend who ordered from them told me one of the reasons they're so low-cost, is that they print the photo reference onto cheap "Print-canvas". Then they paint on top of the photo. I did some research on what she said and it turns out you do get a real oil painting... but once you know the process, it doesn't feel that authentic. I did not want something flimsy, I want something that could last and cheap labor of course! Boris was very easy to communicate with and made sure I was comfortable with what he was delivering. He also designed a very cool frame for the painting and set it up so that it would fit the ambiance of the house. Boris had under 18 hours to paint a 2-person portrait. While he was working he frequently updated me to ensure the project was always moving in the right direction. I had a great experience working with Boris not only because he is talented and my friends loved the gift, but also because he is incredibly candid and professional. Boris is extremely talented, professional and reasonable. Here's my experience: This August I had a great personal achievement of 1 year of quitting smoking and wanted to indulge in something different as a gift to myself. I've come across Boris and his work through a mutual friend and thought a portrait painting would be the perfect thing - as my apartment needs some art and I was a huge fan of his work. While I love art I must admit I am a bit clueless and didn't really have a direction. Boris was fantastic with working with me, and understood the concept I could barely describe myself. I wanted something classy, sexy, timeless, and beautiful. He gave me some ideas, which led me to showing him one of my favorite photos of me in a mirror with a reflection and he thought it would be fun to do. Finally, we had a concept. We arranged an appointment and we took many photos. I showed him exactly where the painting was to be hung in my apartment. He was great in handpicking his favorite photos, and I narrowed them down to 9 photos and told him to surprise me. I had a favorite, but I couldn't choose and I didn't tell him what it was. I had become more familiar with his artistry by this time, and trusted him completely to choose whatever photo he wanted - I knew I would love whatever he created, and it was important for me to give him artistic freedom to do so. My only request was flowers in the painting. The day had finally come - it was about 6 weeks time, which I thought was fantastic speed, but my excitement had grown on a daily basis and I have never been so patient with anything in my life!! Especially considering that I had no idea what painting he would choose. He hand delivered the finished work and when I saw it...I screamed, I jumped, I cried, I laughed, I clapped and I smiled like a child. It was my favorite photo!!! And it was GORGEOUS!!! It took my breath away, I could not believe it was me. The painting came out better than expected, and I love every single detail in it. I'm wearing a dress with some lace, and he was able to portray it's sheerness, including shadows on my leg. He painted every detail, down to the placement of my hand, the curves of my legs, the paint on my toes, the shade of my skin, the red tint in my hair, but most importantly, the look on my face. He completely captured the vibe of what I wanted but couldn't describe. It is classy, sexy, timeless & beautiful. It's mysterious and I love that there is a painting of me hanging in my bedroom that is of me sitting in my bedroom. I love that it's not only a portrait, it's art. Oh, it is HUGE. He custom built the frame for me which compliments the painting and my room absolutely perfectly. It's not a simple frame to construct (that part I know) it's 3 outlined borders of separate pieces of weathered wood, with a walnut outer frame. The most experienced carpenter in the world would commend him on his carpentry skills. It's really just gorgeous. And I love love love that the frame is masculine, and the painting is feminine. He designed it perfectly for the painting. Obviously, the man is gifted & his work is beautiful. But even more than that, I appreciate how he understood his customer and the concept I attempted to articulate. I honestly cannot recommend him enough. Five stars all the way! I am so happy with the entire experience, and very happy to have gained a friend in the process. Plus, I learned a little about art along the way Oh, and he even brought his drill and hung up the painting for me on the spot! As a woman who doesn't even own a drill, this was huge! Full service artist!! I've commissioned him for a second project, a set of dog paintings for very special clients - again he pulled off an amazing feat. This was 3 dogs who I did not have a photo of together - so in he managed to pull off the concept by using 3 separate photos of the dogs and painting them individually as 3 floating paintings in a large rectangular custom made frame he built for the project. I am writing this review months later - (sorry for the delay, Boris!) I've had so many compliments on the painting, and I am still stunned that it's even me. Quite a few friends have asked for his info and want to do paintings now as well. Thank you, Boris! I will cherish this always. I wish you every happiness & success in the world. You are a star! Over the past year, I have been wanting to get a family portrait done, but since my pup's passing, it accelerated the need to get it done. I ended up finding this brilliant artist that was able to bring one of my fave pictures from our home in Colorado to life in a beautiful painting. I love my sweet cat, Webster. Like most pet owners, I feel Webster is so special. I wondered if it was possible to capture his loving personality on canvas. Really outstanding. I did a lot of searching online, first locally (Boston area) and then everywhere trying to find a pet-portraitist who could produce a painting of our boxer as a gift to my fiancee. I kept finding ones that were either focused solely on photorealism (I already have a photo!), or who had some sort of unique but uniform (and often kitschy) style they imposed on every commissioned painting. Neither was what I was looking for. When I saw Boris' portfolio online (which is particularly extensive and well organized, which was very helpful), I was pretty sure I'd found the one. Across the examples of his work, I saw a wide variety of styles and approaches to the work. It was clear he wasn't just a talented guy with a brush who could paint whatever he's told to, but also an artist with a voice and the ability to engage personally with each and every work. Boris is able to interpret both the image and the essence contained in a supplied photograph, and render it as a unique expression of both. That's probably not for everybody. I can see the desire some people would have for a photographic rendering of their dog in oils. Or the attraction to a particular artist's distinctive template with the thought "I'd like one of those with my dog in it." But I could tell from his portfolio that Boris would actually be personally invested while painting this portrait, so that's when I knew he's who I wanted to work with. I thought the prices were very reasonable given the quality of the work, and he was very easy to communicate with about the project. He patiently worked with me through various ideas for doing the painting. Also, he paints a lot more than pets, and does some very creative and beautiful framing work too. read more
