Maya took time showing care and detail even with other projects in her pipeline. She made the process super enjoyable for me and helped me perfect a default format for my photography that I'd been struggling with. Brooklyn Editions was presented with a unique and challenging project, reproduction of a 75 year old wedding album. The project involved removing 47 original 8x10"photos, scanning and digitizing each in high resolution, printing a set on contemporary, high quality paper and inserting the prints into an album provided. Well beyond the original expectations, Brooklyn Editions stepped in to assist in an otherwise futile search for a suitable album. The thumbnail scans they emailed of the paintings I sent were over saturated with too much contrast. Brooklyn Editions told me to download their hi-res color corrected versions, but this required signing an intimidating contract, so I offered to visit and view the scans directly from their drive. Brooklyn Editions refused to allow me to do this and threatened to keep my work unless I paid over $600 in cash to accept their unwanted scans. In 25 years, I've never experienced anything like this. I am quite disappointed in the poor customer service at Brooklyn Editions. Coming from Manhattan, I went well out of my way to bring work there for scanning. At the bare minimum, I think it was reasonable to expect a level of professionalism that has been provided by other service bureaus I have used in the past. Brooklyn Editions put their scans on a drive. When I got home, I opened the drive and saw that the files were on it. A couple of months later, when I attempted to actually open the images, all the files were corrupt. I stored the drive in a safe place so there is no reason other than either the drive or the files they provided never worked to begin with. I don't know of a place that doesn't offer courtesy retrieval services, so I asked Brooklyn Editions if / when they could provide scans that I could open. At first, Brooklyn Editions said they would send them for download the next day. Instead, they sent an email saying that their back ups were in storage and left me waiting and wondering about when they might retrieve my scans. This was a few weeks ago. Brooklyn Editions knows that I need the scans now but with no reply from them, I will have to get the scans done elsewhere. read more

Stephen really saved us this past weekend. After working for two months on a labor of love - a family tree celebrating the life of my grandfather, we were finally ready to print. Or so we thought. We got married in July and took our wedding photos to Brooklyn Editions to print and the results were stunning. We called Stephen and then went over to his studio, which is in the South Slope in Brooklyn. It's a very cool space with large prints of art and photos that he has printed over the years. We sat down with him and he helped us narrow down our choices. As he pulled the pictures up he was able to tweak them subtly in Photoshop until the exposures were to his satisfaction - he's a bit of a perfectionist, yet he is super efficient. He even removed someone's arm from the background of one otherwise perfect photo. We ordered a bunch of giclee prints and he recommended printing on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper - the prices were reasonable. Anyway, when we got the results, they were stunning. Previously we had ordered a couple prints from one of the online photo printing sites, but the difference was night and day. The ones form online were alright, but the ones that Stephen printed bordered on fine art - just spectacular. Along with our memories of the event, the photos are kind of what you are left with and to see them printed to such an exacting level - it felt like a gift. read more
