Joan is so amazing! She did my hair and it looked perfect. She is extremely patient and so sweet. I wanted some beach waves at the ends and she did that for me and this stayed for days so nicely. I also like how clean the salon is and how nice the people are. Can't wait to go back soon for a haircut.

10/10 would recommend! I came here a few weeks ago for a haircut, and it was so great! [Full disclosure - I had my hair cut by someone who is in training (Jenna), so I can't comment on the stylists on the floor, but this review is based on my experience] Jenna and I had a consult and she talked with me through my history and what I was wanting out of the appointment! She washed my hair (the products smelled amaze!) and I got a nice little scalp massage, and we went back to the chair where she cut then dried my hair and gave me a little blowout. It was a fairly basic cut, but even so, everything was checked by her teacher, who I believe (based on looking at their website/Instagram) was Ali, who is one of the stylists there. Ali was so thorough when checking my hair at the end of the appointment, and gave very detailed feedback to Jenna (who did great, btw!) and I actually thought it was really cool to listen in - I think sometimes we forget how much technique goes into getting a haircut so that just reminded me that this really is a learned skill, and a form of art, really. I truly had such a good experience, from check-in to check out - the receptionist was very friendly, the salon is BEAUTIFUL and spacious. Everything was very clean, people were wearing masks and honestly, everyone was so kind. I will definitely be back for Jenna while she's training, but also, I would come back to the salon in general! A few things that stood out to me about Art + Autonomy: 1. The training - I don't know if this is the norm in NYC, but I think it's incredible how much training and education you have to go through to be a stylist on the floor at Art + Autonomy. My appointment with someone that was training gave me so much insight into that, and it truly made me appreciate this salon and experience even more! (and also, this is a stylist that already has a couple of years of experience) Stylists go through so much training and education and get "checked off" (if you will) for each service, and once they perfect one area, they can move on / build on to that, learning more and more advanced skills - it takes years (from what it seems) to be on the floor. Knowing the amount of time, effort, energy, and precision that goes into being a stylist here is seriously a HUGE reason I would, and will, return. 2. I really love that they are offering gender-neutral, inclusive pricing based on time, not "men's haircut/women's haircut/woman's color". I think this is SO important, so I very much appreciate the fact that they are creating a safe and inclusive environment where everyone can feel comfortable. 3. This is a little silly, but people don't talk about it and I actually think this is important - the chair that you sit in to get your hair washed is actually comfortable?! Yes, yes, I realize this is small in comparison to everything else I just mentioned, but again, if you're paying for quality, why would you want to be uncomfortable the whole time you're getting your hair washed when you're supposed to be relaxing! So much more comfy than a normal salon, and those small things really do add to the experience. Here's the thing - it's NYC, anything hair-related is going to be expensive no matter where you go (especially in Soho). So you're gonna be spending the money regardless, why not go to a beautiful salon where you know the service is going to be quality. I held off for a long time due to cost, but I'm more and more realizing that quality is truly key (maybe that's what happens when you turn 30, you become wiser about quality of service vs saving money?) Anyway. Sorry to all the other cheap-o salons I've frequented over the years, you will not be missed!

I got my first haircut in over a year from Jenna and she was positively perfect. Jenna explained all the products she was using and helped me understand what would be beneficial for my hair type. She perfectly executed the vibe of my reference picture, which featured curtain bangs and layers. Jenna's explanations and expertise made me feel confident that I'd like what my hair looked like at the end of the appointment, and I definitely did. They use Milbon and R+Co products, which I loved.

First visit here and would like to say never again? I did some research to make sure the salon knew how to cut male hair. So I made an appointment for a cut and perm (male) and was assigned Tom this past Sunday morning at 10am. Everything seemed ok until he started to cut the sides. He was clearly not familiar with cutting men's hair and did say he hasn't used clippers in forever (this is where I started to get nervous). I'm no barber but have had my fair share of haircuts to know he was having obvious trouble. I left the appointment around 1:30pm? (I have maybe 5-6 inches of hair) I thought it was bad but didn't realize how bad until my girlfriend said "he let you walk out like that??" (see photo). I was so embarrassed with my hair that I immediately went to another barber to get my cut fixed.. Disappointed with the amount of money spent here and won't be back.

I haven't had a decent hair cut since Covid. My regular hair salon closed and I didn't have my stylists contact. You all know how hard it is to find your hair stylist. So I did what any other person does and searched the internet, specifying experience with curly hair. Because all you curly haired ladies know how much harder that is. Most people don't know how to cut curly hair and create the proper texture and layers. Well, look no further. I can't stress how happy I am that I found Skarlin. I did it! I found my teammate and stylist! She was meticulous, took her time, and put the love into it. I felt the love as she twirled every curl. I felt the love that she has for her craft. She gave me the layers my hair needed so badly so I didn't look like a pyramid. It's been weeks later and I'm still reaping the rewards. Thank you Skarlin! PS: Pic is from three weeks after my cut.

As a natural redhead, I'm incredibly particular about who colors my hair; especially given the various shades of red coupled with the challenges of dying red hair - it doesn't hold dye easily. I've been religiously seeing Jenna at A+A for close to two years now and she is phenomenally gifted in the art of coloring hair - *and* cutting. While some may be hesitant to entrust their locks to a junior colorist, I suggest you let those hesitancies melt away as Jenna doesn't disappoint. Beyond being gifted in the 'physical' artistry of hair, what makes her a cut above (pun intended) is that she is incredibly attuned to the wants/needs of her clients. She attentively listens during the consultation, and if you can't find the words to perfectly capture what you're looking for, no worries! Jenna is a master at hair translation. Make an appointment with her immediately!

I love getting my hair cut and colored by Jenna! she's kind, detail-focused, and I always leave with exactly the coif I want. she's so cool to talk to throughout your visit, but will also let you veg if you need a lowkey service. highly recommend A + A and Jenna!

Hi Alex. Yes, we do take cards.

I paid $480 for my appointment and left with hair that looked patchy and not like what we had discussed. While disappointing results can sometimes happen, what bothered me most was the complete lack of communication afterward. I reached out to Masaki on May 13 regarding my concerns and attempted to resolve the issue privately. I never received a response. It has now been about a month, and despite giving plenty of time for a reply, I have been ignored. I did not immediately leave reviews or make public comments because I wanted to give him the opportunity to address the situation directly. Unfortunately, that opportunity was never taken. For $480, I expected a higher standard of work and customer service. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Masaki.

Updating my review: I used to come here because the haircuts were strong, but over time the…read moreexperience deteriorated significantly. Appointments became rushed, started late, and lacked even basic professionalism. You're barely greeted when you walk in, and the overall tone makes it feel like you're inconveniencing them just by being there. I told them multiple times I had a head injury from a concussion and the lack of care was very concerning how abrasively they washed and handled my head. My most recent appointment was a complete failure. I asked for a warm, golden brown and came prepared with multiple reference photos. While the color was processing, I clearly flagged that it was pulling purple. That concern was dismissed, and the product was left on longer. The result was the darkest my hair has ever been, almost black with a cool, purple hue. The exact opposite of what I requested. The color job is all mismatched, the lower part of my hair significantly darker, the roots are sloppy and uneven. When I pointed this out, the response was defensive and dismissive. At one point, I was sarcastically asked if I wanted to "bleach it," which is an inappropriate and careless suggestion for already fine hair. It was mind blowing to have this handled so poorly and then be rushed through a cut that does not look anywhere close to the quality of the past cuts. I followed up requesting a refund, given that this will take months to correct and fade, and received no response for over 48 hours. It's not even about the money - it's about the severe lack of respect. What's most surprising is that this level of defensiveness and lack of accountability was unacceptable, especially after such a grave mistake. Instead of thoughtful adjustment and ownership, the response was dismissive in the moment and silent afterward. Mistakes happen. How they're handled is what defines a business. This was not handled well. NYC has no shortage of salons that can deliver both technical skill and professionalism. This is not one of them. Updating this with a pic and additional NYC HAIR SALON SEO terms so future customers are warned since the salon has decided to block me after no satisfactory resolution. The pic at the top right was me pre-hair f*** up. Only come to this salon if you'd like to come home and cry.

This was their "best advice for me" and that I should come back and get both together. I only needed a haircut and this was the only chance I got (I am a SAHM with 2 kids and minimal backup except this day) so I said I would consider it but I need a cut now. It was 6 months since my last. That must have just not been the right thing to say bc I was judged, insulted during the entire session and I got the worst haircut of my life. I can't even get it fixed because it is so much shorter than I wanted. There are huge "texture" discrepancies all over my hair, the most obvious being in the back near my neck. There's also a strand of hair far longer than the entire length of my bob cut. I don't even understand how this happened. I'm so traumatized.
