I had booked and confirmed my appointment with Esme. I showed up 5 minutes early to my 10:00 am appointment. I waited for the stylist to show up until 10:15 am, at which point I asked the receptionist if Esme was on the way. She said she would call him, which surprised me as I imagined she'd have done it a while ago. She then informed me that the stylist got his schedule wrong and would not be in until 11:00 am, but that he would cut my hair for free to make up for the mixup. When I returned at 11:00 am, he was working on someone else and I still had to wait. When he did come over to me, he was only mildly apologetic. He asked what I was hoping to get done, and I described that I'd like to trim my bangs (which were a whispy fringe), trim my long layers, and trim the ends of my hair by about an inch. He didn't ask for a reference photo and got straight to cutting. He cut my hair dry, which I had never had done before and did not ask for. He proceeded to thin my hair with his scissors at severe angles and barely touched my bangs. After the dry cut, I was shampooed by the receptionist, who only applied shampoo to the front of my head. Then, he dried my hair without any heat protectant--drying my bangs down and flat against my forehead--and cut my bangs from there. I kept having to nitpick the bangs themselves because they were uneven and blunt. Long story short, my hair is thin, my layers are choppy, my bangs are ragged, and my ends are split--he essentially gave me a wolf cut, unprompted. I have never had such a bad salon experience or sloppy haircut in my life. I walked in there with long, thick, wavy hair and came out with a rats nest--choppy layers that stop at my chin and essentially a mullet--that I don't think I can fix. I should have said "forget it" when they offered me the free haircut. Do not go here if you want a proper haircut or to be treated like a proper client. read more

This is the first negative review I have evere written but my experience was THAT bad. I had long curly salt and pepper hair that always looked amazing. I wanted a change and went to Amy. She was very nice and fun. however, she gave me the worst layered haircut of my life. She but short disconnected layers and my hair barely curls now. This was in August and I have been to two stylist who can't comprehend what she was trying to do and told me I just have to wait for the top layer to grow enough to cut it. Fringe Salon is a small salon in the lower east side/soho area. I heard about it because I saw a girl with amazing hair while shopping in Soho and when I asked her where she got her hair done, she said Fringe Salon. So I had to go check it out. After checking out the website and looking on Instagram, I finally decided to go to Chenoh. I liked that her page had a lot of different haircuts and that the lines on the haircuts looked really nice. The salon itself is very small but charming. There is a lot to look at - which I really liked. I also liked that the music was good and that it wasn't too loud or too quiet. Everyone seemed to be in their own zone but also respectful of everyone else's space. There is no pretense. I felt like Chenoh really understood what I wanted from a haircut and color. Recently I was feeling inspired to do something different and blew me away with his cut, color, and styling. She is considered a junior stylist and thus more affordable, but I found her work to be excellent. She gave me exactly what I wanted, one of the better cuts I've had--it helps that she has curly hair like mine and so doesn't need to be reminded about what it requires. I finally found the love of my life of 5 years and decided to cheat on her *GASP*, because one can't stay faithful for too long AND holy shit I'm so happy I did.... Enter: LUNDY !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lundy is a magical hair sorceress with the humor, wit and story telling ability of early Eddie Murphy. She knows what you want even when you are unable to communicate it properly - ie holding up a blurry pinterest image of a haircut and color that looks exactly like what you already walked in with. I have never had a bad haircut or color from her. I've trusted her with bright neon peach, blonde, strawberry blonde, and even BANGS, first bangs of my life mind you. My hair has never been healthier or looked better in my life. I've referred strangers on the subway giving me compliments and my closest friends. I had the worst experience at a hair salon today I have ever had. And to preface, I had usually gone to Sean who is incredible. But for some reason they put me with someone else and my hair turned orange. This was my correction color, and I cried it was so bad. I kept asking to get it fixed and she kept saying how pretty it looked. I told her no, this is not what I asked for. The stylist told me she was only human and that I should go somewhere else to get it fixed. Will never go here again. Expensive, trendy salons are not usually my jam, but I wanted to make sure I went to someone who knew what they were doing. She's worth every dime. I've gotten so many compliments on my bangs I've lost count! The staff is really friendly and attentive, the salon is cute, and it's in a fun location I don't otherwise get to go to much. I recently tried fringe salon again to see Lundy. My hair was nicer that I had previously had at fringe, but the cut was still poorly done and choppy. She got very frustrated with me when I was having a hard time articulating what I wanted to get done, she hardly spoke to me and didn't ask me anything or make conversation. When they washed out my hair they didn't use any conditioner even though I had just had my hair bleached, so I left with crunchy dehydrated hair. Overall my hair looks good, but not great. I just find it really really hard to be spending $300+ on my hair to have the person doing it treat me like I am a bother to them when I try to be nothing but helpful and considerate of their time and work. NextAid is an organization that helps to improve the lives of children, youth and women in Africa. Fringe Salon is my kind of place. Nice vibe, cool hair stylists and warm people. Drinks were flowing all night. There was a punch bowl filled with vodka and Orangina. Something I would like to call a "European Screwdriver." DJ Dhundee was spinning hot tunes all night. Blondie, Prince and MJ are timeless. "Heart of Glass" will always get me on the dance floor, no matter how old I am. There was a raffle going on and with Mother Fortune on my side, me and my partner in crime won a $25 Max Fish gift certificate. We just have to use it before they close their doors for good. It was a wonderful evening and to think I actually did something to benefit a greater cause. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Oh wait, that must be the alcohol. I will be back to get a haircut. I came to Fringe with my voucher for a hair gloss from Gilt City. (According to their website, gloss is $50 and up.) I immediately fell in love with the chill, slightly punk, slightly rustic look of the place. Big props for putting cute bird cut outs on the ceiling by the hair washing stations. I had never gotten a gloss before, and Rosie answered my questions about how to make it last longer, etc. Probably unrelated to the services here specifically, I'm a little surprised that my hair isn't shinier, but I wouldn't hesitate to come back here for a haircut. Holly took NOTES on my hair. No joke. Here at Fringe it's all about the details and the results prove it is so worth it. I walked in off the street (heard recs about the adorably hip yet comfortable salon) this week and Holly had time to cut my hair. After filling out a brief survey on a pad of Fringe stationery, Holly consulted with me and actually inspected my head for about 10 minutes. I was a little nervous but ohmygod (like with the tone and enthusiasm of a valley girl) my cousin IT like mop of chaos has been tamed from the inside out. She worked it with those shears and my massive mane looks bangin (the lady at the register wanted me to say "fucking gorgeous," but I couldn't muster up the gusto to give her more than a sideways smile and an uncomfortable laugh. I'm not as cool as they are...). So, my hair is manageable and my time at Fringe was lovely. When I said that they pay attention to the details, I wasn't just talking about hair. The whole place is decorated beautifully. There are birds painted onto the ceiling by the sinks so when you wash your hair, you have a view! The bathroom is so cute and the light fixtures are silver metallicky and give it a cool interesting look. I love the unique style and felt like someone really cared A LOT about Fringe. I always get anxiety when it comes to cutting my hair and this was no exception. I cam in with a Gilt deal and when it comes to those things, you never know what kind of service you're going to get. They were packed on a Monday night and I had to wait close to 30 minutes after my appointment before they were ready for me. Already, I had my doubts. My stylist was Laura and she was super nice and very friendly when she came to get me. I explained to her that i wanted to get bangs, trim my ends, keep the length, but try something different...I know, not great direction, but I was hoping that she coudl whip up some magic. I went with the moroccan oil treatment was amazing and my hair was so soft and smelled great for 4 days, even with washing everyday. When it finally came to my cut, she gave me the bangs I wanted, the trim and added some layers to the back. While my hair pretty much looked the same, I figured there was nothing you could really do with long hair and was just going out on a limb with the request. While I didn't get the life changing hair cut that I was hoping for, I did get a haircut that I was happy with and I got exceptional service. In addition to finding a place that actually gives good cuts, it's hard to find a place with great service. Everyone here was friendly - from the girl that checked you in and out, to the girl who washed my hair, everyone was so warm and welcoming and was genuinely nice. It's a cute salon and everyone there seems to really love what they do and love the company they work for and it shows in the work they produce. Outside of the deal, the services are a little more than what I would normally pay, but I'm definitely considering splurging every few months and making this my go to salon. read more

I recently just got bangs and I went to fringe to get them done. My hair dresser was Carolyn and she was an absolute sweetheart. I loved my first cut! But I made an appointment to get a bang trim from her and I hate it. I came in 10 mins early but my hair was disgusting. I thought that they would wash it or something but she just cut it. I asked for a bit thicker of bangs but only a little. She seemed busy and she just cut cut cut. You can see in this picture how uneven it is. Today was my first visit to Fringe and my stylist was Christine, who gave me the best haircut I've had since March of 2013 (15 months ago), and who added credence to my belief that one should only trust a hairstylist whose own hair is magnificent. Often, I've wound up with the same haircut as my stylist (not this time...though that certainly would not have been objectionable); at the very least, it's important to see that their predilections are similar to my own. My history with seemingly-talented cutters of hair throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn is tortuous, sorrowful, and puzzling, so I'm thrilled to have finally found someone as conscientious and meticulous as this lovely lady. Everyone working at Fringe appeared to be top-notch, actually. As a special bonus, their line of hair products smells divine. I shall pick some up next time I'm in. read more

I imagine that if a place charges you $20 for a bang trim, they would know how to do it and avoid the classic fails -cutting it too short, or too wispy, or too blunt straight when you explicitly tell them not to. This mistake has happened twice over the past year so I will never return for any haircut. Staff is nice, polite, and means well but overall would not return. read more

I had been seeing a stylist at another salon that I loved, but her prices had gone up steadily until (at $200 a haircut!!) I decided I had to find a cheaper alternative. I went to Fringe on a whim, made an appointment with a stylist but then changed it last minute to a more convenient date with the only stylist available: Jackie. I was nervous - I have a LOT of hair and have had some bad haircuts. But Jackie was amazing, for about a third of the cost of my go-to stylist. She knew exactly what I needed - what was working, what wasn't, and how to grow my hair out in the least painful way possible (because those awkward stages are brutal). I got an amazing cut with someone who made it look so easy and explained everything she was doing. I am SO glad I found her! I'd recommend Jackie to absolutely anyone. read more

Oh my so, I have been bouncing through salons all over the city for yeeears after losing my long term stylist soulmate -- so. it's been at least 6 since I've had the exact cut I've articulated, (and I'm picky, spoiled from days of modeling yore -- alas, long past with some folks I could never in a million years access again.). But today, finally, the clouds at last parted and magical brilliant Chenoh shone Thru! I came in off a terrrible cut from another salon that I'd had to spend months growing out. I was nervous, and she was so attentive and warm. And then she de-liv-ered. Bangs are perrrfect. Layers elegant and organic, yet intelligently sculpted to be, architecturally, exactly what best suits my face-- bangs before Botox, highlight the cheekbones, etc. It works beautifully long and w light styling, or teased all Texas toast style.
