(December 2022) Armstrong was recommended by a friend and my family has been coming here for around 4 years or so. I've only spoken to John, so naturally I always look for him when I have car trouble, but I'm sure Bob has worked on my cars too. Both gentlemen are wonderfully nice, polite and respectful. In the last few weeks I've been coming in and out for several family cars. I know nothing about cars and John is aware. Haha So he's always giving me advice and helping me make the best decisions. For example, some parts don't need to be fixed immediately, so he'll tell me to wait. Also, some parts shouldn't be fixed because the car is too old and it's not worth it and so on... Furthermore, I was having muffler issues and John recommended Tony's Muffler And Radiator Service (8516 Garvey Ave, Rosemead, CA 91770). He even called them to let them know what I needed because another shop (East LA) tried to take advantage of me and I was feeling anxious. Moreover, the guys are precise and swift with repairs. One day I had to tow one of the cars to the shop. It was almost 5:30pm (closing time), but John jumped immediately at the car. Next day, around 10am he calls to tell me my car is ready to go. John's inherent good-heartedness and kindness is what I love about Armstrong. This directly reflects on their work ethic and how they handle each repair. Their labor costs are fair and for parts it really depends on the car/model. From my experience with the guys, I highly recommend them. Honestly terrible customer service. Asked them kindly if they can help install a car part which only requires a lift, a drill, and a few screws. This installation would only take 15 minutes. I even offered to do it myself. When I arrived around 3pm, there was one guy working on a car and the other two lifts were free. As an Yelp Elite Reviewer, I was overcharged and felt taken advantage of by local Honda dealership. Upon talking to a friend, I was recommended Bob Li of Armstrong Auto Service. I immediately looked up Yelp and delighted with the reviews and immediately took my mother's car to be serviced. After meeting with Bob, told him of my bad experience with the dealership he was extremely detailed and serviced her car at a fair price. The dealership performed the same service at the double the price and I honestly felt being female and during the pandemic I was not about to be traveling to various locations. I returned and he put a new timing belt in at half the price of the dealership quote! I am so happy to found Bob Li and John at Armstrong Auto Service. I took my car for only oil change here in two weeks ago, they lost my stem caps and lost some screws from my car's engine after I came home and realized it. They are not professional, I think they will make you to pay more for your car afterwards. Not recommend this shop to anyone. read more

Wow, I wish I discovered this place sooner!! I've taken my late model Toyota to the dealers and a fancy non-Asian ASE certified shop, but this one is the best by far. Fast, excellent service at a great price. I only needed an oil change and tire rotation. It cost $22.22 for the oil change and $10 for the tire rotation. I was out of there in about 30 minutes on a weekday morning. The other shops cost 3x as much and weren't as thorough. This shop also features ASE certified mechanics. They use name-brand oil and the appropriate consistency for your car. The receipt included measurements for my brakes, since I requested a tire rotation. Make sure they have the wheel-lock key if you're dropping the car off! They gave me a little removable window sticker showing when to go in for the next oil change. I'm impressed with their attention to detail: the maintenance light was reset and there was NO excess oil spilling (NO burning smell right after the oil change). Wow, they treated my baby right! The front desk lady explained everything clearly in English, but they also speak Cantonese and Mandarin. As others have mentioned, the people here are super friendly! I'm female and was treated respectfully. They didn't try to sell me extra stuff I didn't need. The waiting area is an extension of the shop. Functional, but a bit "ghetto". You can hear all of the noise, people were smoking outside, and it was a little chilly. Most importantly, the chairs were clean and the magazines were organized. The floor was run down and it had some clutter like a floor fan covered with grease stains, but hey, you're going there for the excellent work and not for the ambiance! read more

I went here for an oil change on a Saturday afternoon. I had to wait an hour but it there was 1-2 cars ahead of me. Oil + Filter: $22.22 total. Sweet lady who "man's" the service desk/office. She pretty much handles all the paper work and phone calls, without her the place would be in chaos. They noted that my CV boots were broken (which was true) and I asked for a quote, which was $150. That's very reasonable in my books for the parts and labor needed to replace them. read more

My first experience with Armstrong Auto was when I ran over a big pot hole and busted my struts. Came in for a quote and it was $500 cheaper than a chain auto shop so I took it. Work was done perfectly, had no problems with it ever since. Flash forward a little over a year later, I was in the market for a go-to auto shop for my routine maintenance so I just got my first oil change with them. $26 for synthetic blend, $47 for full synthetic. Bob was the one who helped me both times and he's so thorough, even for oil changes. Everything is upfront before he does any work to make sure you're comfortable with it. They accept both cards and cash. Somewhere in between, I had my brakes replaced at a nearby auto shop and they had used brake pads that were too small for my car so it created a clunking noise, after taking it back three days in a row to that shop to get it fixed, they never fixed it but instead told me it was a separate problem and had more work done on my car. Fed up, I went over to Armstrong and they were so nice. They let me leave my car there for the day so they can try to diagnose it in between customers FOR FREE. I asked to pay for a diagnostic fee but they said it was on the house. What a bunch of sweet guys! They couldn't figure it out though, I had to go to the dealership and get the correct diagnosis :( But Armstrong Auto definitely tried, and I appreciate that! The place is a bit run down but for whatever reason, I feel so comfortable here, is that weird?? When I'm in the waiting room and I can hear the mechanics chit chatting with each other and their customers, it feels like I'm at home listening to my dad hang out with his friends lol they all speak cantonese and english, maybe more languages. Super nice guys all around, I never feel pressure to buy anything or do any extra work despite being a typical young asian girl. The prices seem comparable to the auto shops around. I had a brake problem with my Toyota Prius and not many places other than the expensive dealer had the expertise to fix this problem. The brake actuator failed and is a common failure for older Prius cars. It would cost over $2000 to fix at the dealer (because they have the special computers). That is about half of my car's value!! I called Armstrong and John advised me they can do the repair, they specialized in Japanese car repair and knew their way around the Prius. They did the repair and the car is now back on the road again. I recommend this place for the great service. read more

First off, if you don't know this already, a vehicle inspection is NOT free. I don't know where people get the idea that they can go to a SERVICE business, have one or more mechanics spend time inspecting your vehicle, and expect to drive off without paying anything. You are being SERVICED, and services are definitely not free. If they figure out your problem or find additional problems, they will give you honest details, opinions, and give you a quote. If you decide to have your car serviced here, I believe the inspection fee is waived. So that's awesome. :) I love not having to take my car to Longo for maintenance or oil changes. It makes life so much easier(and my wallet so much fatter) to come here. An oil change here is fairly priced; I would even go to say that it is fantastically priced. The type of oil they use here is of very good grade; other places often use the cheapest grade oil they can find for oil changes. Trust me: that cheap stuff really wears down your engine over time. The business here is honest, sincere, and definitely dependable. I've never had a problem with Armstrong in the past three years I've been bringing my car here, unlike a few previous places I've been to in the past. The mechanics are very nice and honest with their opinions and the lady that does the paperwork is very friendly. I've heard her speak Cantonese, Mandarin, and English, so language isn't a problem! As a little note, the place isn't pristine-clean or anything, but do you really expect an auto-mechanic's shop to be without grime? It's not like you're working there, anyway. :) read more

I've been taking my car to Armstrong for over 10 years. It's a family run business with husband and wife, Peter as the chief mechanic and Patty working the front. I bring my cars to them because they are straight up no BS, honest, and frank. Peter is willing to take his time to investigate a problem while the Dealer will charge a hefty diagnostic fee straight up and then only saying they need to replace some pricey component because they are too lazy to get to the root of the problem. Peter gives me honest advice which is in the best interest of your car and wallet. They let me know what to skimp and what not to skimp on. I trust them entirely with my car. I'm also somewhat car literate and have a background in mechanical design, so I won't take someone word on blind faith. Armstrong passes my test. What I dislike about them is their facilities. They have little concept of customer appeal and comfort from the barking caged guard dog to the messiness of their shop. But for me that is usually no problem as I'm assured my car is in good hands. read more

During my last visit, the owners mentioned that they will no longer be owning the shop as they are retiring. What a bummer! I called with a question concerning fixing my water pump. The person (one of the mechanics) who answered was extremely rude, and quite derogatory. This was unprofessional, especially since I was very serious about using their services after being recommended by a friend. Unfortunately for me, I'm not very car-literate, so maintaining my vehicle is often times a puzzle. But I do know that I need an oil change every so often (although we never need one as frequently advertised...it's just to get your car seen regularly by a mechanic). Not having to want to take my car to the dealer, I turned to yelp for help (sorry Longo, I love your service but you are not worth the ridiculous mark-up). One thing's for sure: this business is straight-forward, no frills. It's a pretty typical asian auto shop, but they don't treat you like a 4-year old, which is a plus in my book. All I wanted was to get in and out, and the lady over the counter was very nice (she speaks Cantonese) and approachable. I opted not to sit in the waiting room as she said the oil change would only take about half an hour, so I just stood around the lot like a lost kid in Chinatown. A while later she approaches me and lets me know that the car belt (?) is too dry and needs refixing. Yes, my car-vocabulary is not so good. True to her word I was out within 30 minutes. The bill? $20 something for the oil change and with the belt and labor it came out to $46. Not terribly expensive, and it's much cheaper and more convenient than towing your car once it dies under your neglect. If you want economical, to-the-point service, take your car here...the money you save can go towards gas. read more

I have never wrote a review for any place, but I REALLy REALLY like this place. I've been a loyal customer since I found it through yelp. The shop is a little messy. Not too much lighting, stuff lying around. Nothing fancy at all. But the price. The price is awesome. Engine diagnosed for less than 50. I know some places that charge 60! Ugh.. and to think I got my oil changed there for $32 instead of at Armstrong's. I'm sure it would have been less. Definitely coming here for the next 30,000 miles. I also got my brakes done here. Same day even when they had to order it! They could have possibly saved me a rotor because I was on my last mm. I trust this place with my car and my wallet. Try it out. Patty is awesome. The owners Patty and Peter are THEEEE nicest people I've ever met at an auto shop. They guninelly care about your car and won't try to rip you off. I have absolutely no idea about how cars work and the connections between car parts and their functions, Patty and Peter were able to make things clear for me. I've been coming here for several years for oil changes. This place was recommended to me by my White friend so I figured it was legit. This place is totally legit! The service has always been awesome and the mechanics are trust-worthy. Oil changes are affordable and quick. Recently, my air conditioner broke. My dad took my car to another mechanic and they said it was my compressor and it was going to cost me $700. I took my car back here and they charged me $50 to change the freeon (or whatever it is, I'm not a car person). They put a dye in it so they could find the problem. I came back a week later for them to investigate the problem. They saw I had a leak in my air conditioning hose. They did not charge me for the follow up. They said it would be about $200 to fix: parts and labor. I put a deposit on the part, they ordered it, and called me a few days later when it arrived. I am currently sitting and waiting for them to fix it. They have been working non-stop since I arrived and I'm totally cool with the estimated wait time of 2-3 hours because they have wifi. Went in for an oil change. Brought own oil and filter and was charged $12, not bad since I felt too lazy to do it myself. This would be the second time I let a mechanic change my oil and they almost got it right! Put too much oil in my vehicle which needed only 4.6 quarts, I checked the dip and it's way above. Saw them tightening the oil drain plug with a combination wrench and I'm sure it's way tighter than factory specs, they don't use torque wrenches so fail. All in all, typical Asian mechanic shop that does not put the required effort into an oil change. They did top my fluids and filled my tires with air which is a plus, but this review is all for the oil change! Do it yourself, mechanics do not care about your vehicles. read more

I have mixed reviews about this spot now. I returned on a Saturday to have a oil pump switch replaced. The job was simple enough and went quick enough but not even after driving it 10miles the switch blew out which would cause my oil pressure to read as if it was running hot. I could understand maybe the luck of the draw I've happen to get a bad switch so I after I gave them a call and told them about the problem they said no worries bring it back in and they would replace the switch. So that was done two days later and what do you know it was struck with the same problem. Lucky they still hadnt tossed the old leaking switch so they were able to once again drop it back in. Now for the 3 time I left them with the car for a few days so they could really dig into the problem. All this time my pressure reading hot I started to develop and new problem, a leaking heater core. Which had to do with a crack in the core and my thinking all inter twined with the pressure running hot. So after three trips and a few days without the car the problem was finally fix and i was correct I did end up developing a leak in the heater core and was told that they did not have the tools to replace it and after doing some research online I was able to find out that the tools require were nothing more that what a mechanic should have in the shop I just felt they were unwilling to do the task because of the work involved. They had explained why someone may have turned down the job and told me that they have turned down the job on other vehicles because of the work involved. This one guy here (I should have checked for his name) but he is honest, super nice, and responsible. I've gone in twice on the same day and he fit me in and finished in a really good amount of time. Their prices are very affordable, 60% difference from direct car dealer price. I ran over something in the road and it knicked off a piece under the car and he fixed for me gratis. Oil change is cheap here. The best part is they don't try to push you to get tons of things done to your car. You come in with a problem they check and fix that problem. Done. Easy. If you want them to check something then ask, they won't give you a list of 10 more things you should probably fix. read more

I knew nothing about a car and she will explain to you every question you have and very honest to tell you if you can wait if something needs to be fixed or its something urgent. Its really hard to find honest and inexpensive car mechanics. The dealer price is just too expensive for me. I now live in Van Nuys, but I make it a point to bring my car to Armstrong Auto Service.
