It's been a long time since my bad experience at Armando's, so I accepted the challenge to go back when my husband suggested it. This time it was much, much better! I had the carnitas, which aside from needing a little more flavor, were really tender and good on the tortillas provided. I got a delicious salad as my side and I was really more impressed with how good the salad was than the rest of the meal. Husband had the paella, which was the whole reason he wanted to go there. Well, as my previous review stated, I would be returning to Armando's Caribe a number of times to try more menu items. Over a year has gone by and I am happy to report that Armando's guacamole still reigns supreme as the best I've had. I have tried a number of other menu items - burritos, empanadas, tacos... all have been consistently great, but their Ropa Vieja is truly special. The tattered shreds of juicy braised beef in the creole sauce of tomatoes, onions, and peppers created a moment of unparalleled taste-bud euphoria. I've come to respect Armando's for what they are - more so "Caribbean Latin American", than "Mexican". As such, I've leaned towards menu items like their empanadas and the aforementioned Ropa Vieja (and away from their burritos). It's ok but overpriced. Ropa Vieja - Cooked until fork tender. But the flavor was really lacking in that department. I wish it was better. I really liked Papi's version, but this one let me down. The tomato creole sauce didn't have any oomph. Pass. Or as my foodie buddy said at dinner, "this is the worst dish at the table" =(. Ouch, cause I picked this one out and we all shared. Salmon - This was one of the better dishes I got to try. Grilled but still juicy, sitting atop a mildly sweet guava sauce. The rice and veggies included were more meh. Cazuela de Mariscos - This thing is more stew than anything. Fair warning, they aren't holding back on the cream. Dunk the included Cuban bread with caution while you scoop out the various pieces of seafood. This sat kind of heavy after the meal. Love Armando's! My family frequents Armanod's any time we want a Cuban fix. Our favorite is their paella. Particularly the Paella de Mariscos is very good with succulent sea food, rice and chicken. My daughter loves their Traditional Cubano Cuban sandwich. I've also had their chorizo quesadilla which is spicy! Oh, yeah, their margarita's aren't too shabby either! The waiters are always laid back and definitely do not rush you. They are very conscientious in keeping you in drinks (yea!). In fact, I've always had to ask for the check when we're ready to leave. What?! It is so LOUD in here! I remember when this was some generic BBQ place, I am much happier with its current persona! Had an enjoyable dinner here with a large party, the only drawback was the noise level which could only be described as crazy loud. We left hoarse after hours of shout talking to each other and resorted to TXT'ing the other end of the table if anything was needed! Temporary deafness aside, our dinner and drinks were very good. I had the paella and sampled the fish tacos. Service did suffer some confusion with such a full house but got the job done with a smile. They even split our checks, man I love the South. This is a go-to for my coworkers because it's not only close to where we work but also consistently good, with fast service. I've had several things from here and all have been good. My usual go-to is the steak quesadilla, which is substantial, stuffed with cheese, steak, peppers and onions. The rice and beans is really good, not just the side you never eat in most Mexican places (I know, this isn't strictly Mexican). I've had two versions of the Cubano. My favorite was the one with chorizo but both were absolutely delicious. They also have a jalapeno cream sauce that I highly recommend you order a side of because it's delicious with everything. I have tried to decipher the recipe before but so far, unsuccessful. The staff is attentive and service isn't slow even when they are busy. This used to be one of my fav's for flame broiled (similar to Ya-Yas) chicken. Not sure why but it was and has just gotten so average since they expanded. Margaritas were average, watery and meh. The best thing we had were the fried yuca! Sauce was good to dip. Everything else was dry and over cooked. Sometime I will go back, but not for awhile. I can't believe I have never reviewed Armando's. I used to work in Norcross and would stop here for lunch once a week. Now that I work further away and also live further, I still make the trek every few months. Service is usually good, though if you are seated on the bar side, there may be less service. The salsa here is fantastic and fresh and I could drink it! My favorite dishes are the reuben cubano (chicken cuban). It has melty cheese, pickles, grilled chicken, mayo, it is SO GOOD and no other place I have been to makes it this way. I also love the vegetable quesadillas. Usually when you get vegetarian, it is tasteless or bland and has like lettuce and cheese. This has grilled veggies (squash, zuchinnni, mushrooms, onions, etc) and you don't miss the meat. This is the only Cuban restaurant that prepares my all time favorite sandwich, the Cuban Reuben (only ever had at La Fonda Latina) and is located near my house. The sandwich is delicious! It comes on fresh Cuban bread, filled with fresh grilled marinated chicken breast strips, pickles, Swiss cheese, and their famous coleslaw. It comes with a side of black beans and rice. They also serve complimentary (fresh and delicious) chips and salsa. This is one gem of an establishment that is tucked away in a strip shopping lot. Continuing on with my quest to eat all of Gwinnett, Armando's Caribe is a solid 4 stars. This is a casual eatery with a mix of Mexican, Caribbean, and Cuban flavors. You get your choice of tacos, sandwiches, burritos, paella, quesadillas, and a large assortment of tapas and appetizers. WIFI password is Decaf54321 (you're welcome.) It's a cute date place. Lights are dim, decor is festive, and the music is lively. Perfect environment to grab a beer or two with your meal. Service......left a lot to be desired. A gentleman (the manager?) started us off with waters and chips & salsa, but we literally could not get his attention for the next 10 minutes to place our order. No amount of hand raising or excuse me's did the trick. It got pretty frustrating until a young waitress spotted us and finally helped us. We got: - (Complimentary) Chips & Salsa: Chips were fresh and crunchy, not heavily salted. Salsa is housemade but I felt the consistency was a bit too watery. Overall, good to snack on! They were generous with refills. - Shrimp Corn Chowder ($5 for cup, $8 for bowl): Following the advice of a previous Yelper, I got the chowder and it is SO GOOD. Be warned that the soup is on the sweeter side and heavy on the cream so a bowl might be too much; get the cup. It came out HOT, which is great because who likes lukewarm chowder? - Baby Back Ribs ($6 from their Tapas menu): You get 3 pieces. Not a big fan of ribs so I only had a bite. The sweet tangy flavor was there but the meat wasn't fall-off-the-bone tender. The husband said it wasn't such a bad thing having that meaty texture. - Chicken Paella ($15): So much meat! You get 6-8 chunks of tender and juicy chicken parts, perfectly seasoned. The rice had so much flavor but it was way too salty in my opinion. It would've been perfect if they toned it down a little. This was our 2nd visit and I really like this place. It's not upscale by any means but the staff is attentive and they have a great variety of food. You can choose between many Cuban or Mexican dishes and portion size was fairly large (enough to split). This night I had the Caribe Dip for my entree, technically from the appetizer menu, and it was lovely. It was more than enough for a meal and I highly recommend. Gooey cheese dip containing chicken, shrimp and steak comes to you with flour tortillas and some of the best pico de gallo I've ever had, impressive. Salsa is quite obviously fresh and not super hot, I ate so much! I'm picky about my salsa, usually at a restaurant they either try and pass off store-bought as fresh or make it so darn hot it's inedible. This was perfect! The only minor issues with restaurant- when we arrived there was no host/hostess and no greeting. We just kind of stood around for a few minutes and then just sat ourselves. There doesn't seem to be assigned tables for the servers so we answered questions in duplicate and triplicate because different servers kept trying to help us. Honestly I've always been a fan of Armondo's. The salsa is great and Cubano is the best in town. Unfortunately they have very poor management. The hostess walks around with a giant note pad and has no idea what group came in first. She is walking around looking for tables and seating parties in the wrong order. Our party was the first to arrive for the night and were the last to be seated. When I brought this up to the hostess she suggested there were multiple parties ahead of us. When I pointed out a party of 6 that was seated before us her excuse was "they must have seated themselves". How does that even happen?? We arrived at 7 pm and were told our table for 7 would take 15-20 minutes. One hour and a half later we were finally seated. Once we finally received service our food took another hour to come out. I was very dissatisfied with the service at Armondo's. Don't get me wrong the food is amazing. But I prefer to order over the phone and pick up. We obviously caught the crew off guard today because we arrived in between lunch and dinner, (around 3:30) and there was no one to greet us. My daughter decides to order the chicken empanadas on the appetizer menu and I choose the veggie burrito with black beans and rice. They bring out the chips but I am not interested because I rarely eat them. However, when I do, I like them very thin and served hot. These were neither thin nor hot. My daughter's empanadas arrive and they are huge and delicious. They are stuffed with meat and veggies and just created the perfect bite. These are honestly the best empanadas I have ever eaten because they were well seasoned and perfectly balanced. We took an order to go. My veggie quesadilla plate was huge. I only ate the beans and rice and one-third of the quesadilla because it was very filling. I loved that the food was lightly seasoned and not upstaged by spices. I could really just taste and enjoy the food. I hate to see beautiful dishes ruined by too much salt or an over abundance of seasonings but you won't find that problem here. If you enjoy a very generous serving of vegetables, (zucchini, broccoli, peppers, onion and mushrooms), this is the way to go. The next time I come, I will definitely try the crab cakes.
