He went into the crawl space with a flood light and when he came out related that ALL the joists were rotten and the floor issues were stemming from that ....my house was literally sinking due to no support. Given this terrible report, it would be ludicrous to have D-Bug do anything, I would be literally giving them $13600 to do nothing, because it would all have to be torn out when my contractor and his crew attacked the same problem. I asked my contractor to relay the info to D-Bug. He told D-Bug he would take care of the problems, and that we wouldn't be needing them (they were to start in 3 days!) They said due to the circumstances, they'd issue me a refund check in the full amount. I called D-Bug 3x asking where my check was. First time the ?owner was on the "other line". Second time he was not in the office (didn't he have a cell phone?). Third time he got on the phone and said "all deposits are non-refundable" despite the fact he told my contractor he'd issue me a full refund!! I explained I'm living on Social Security and needed that $1360 badly. So far they have proven to have poor assessment skills of what really needs done and that they are also LIARS. A radon pump was installed in my house in 2021. The kitchen sink started to clog up so I called a…read moreplumber To unclog. Initially they couldn't figure it out the clog and a snake didn't work. When they ran a scope through the lateral they found chunks of concrete in the pipe. Upon investigation they heard sloshing sounds in the radon uptake pipe, and they concluded the uptake pipe leading to the radon pump was installed into the floor directly on top of and through a lateral that leads to the waste water from my kitchen sink. The patch of concrete they used to covered the broken pipe failed and fell into the terracotta pipe blocking the wastewater and causing a backup. As a result the radon pump started to suck up soapy, kitchen sink wastewater, which was it was making sloshing sounds. The plumber I called said these radon pumps were supposed to last 10-20 year and most have a warranty, and that the installation was definitely not to code. The plumber said it's likely the water/soap/moisture caused the radon pump bearings to go bad prematurely and that was the squeaking sound we heard. I called US Radon Professionals and an automated message says the number is not taking calls at this time. The name on the sticker of the radon pipe said to call David Lovic and he has not responded to the text messages, Facebook messages, and for about a week or two the number is still not taking calls.

Buckle in because I'm about to take you on a wild ride through my experiences renting for a year from Liz and John. I'm sure they'll offer some half-hearted reply attempting to contradict what I say in this review, but at the end of the day I have the texts to back it up. I also believe I was a good tenant: I paid my rent on time and never missed a month. I lived at 3403 Dawson with four other people during 2019-2020. I'll give you a quick rundown of the landlords: John and Liz work together, but John mainly supervises renovations while Liz deals with tenants. Liz would randomly perform spot-checks of the house under the guise of coming in to "collect our rent checks". When we said that made us uncomfortable and we were more comfortable putting them in the mailbox for her at the front of our house, she said that was unnecessary and the random audits continued. However, we realized that when she came in, sometimes she'd turn our AC up. You see, they had written into the lease that they'd pay for electricity and air conditioning, so these spot-checks were opportunities for her to adjust the thermostat to try and save some money. Speaking of their electrical penny-pinching, when my roommates and I wanted to get a fish and five-gallon tank during quarantine, Liz told us the only way they'd allow it was if we agreed to pay them $20 a month "to offset the rise in their electricity bill". For those of you who haven't ever owned a fish, a five gallon fish tank is about the size of a small bowl and doesn't use power. One day, we came home to find our beloved porch table missing. Only after asking Liz if she saw anyone stealing our table did we find out that they had brought a truck to haul away the table because the neighbor didn't like the way it looked. I'm not kidding. The table wasn't exactly something you'd find at a three-star Michelin restaurant, but we were broke college kids and it's all we could afford. Call me crazy, but I believe if you're going to have the balls to silently destroy your tenants' property, you should probably have the decency and integrity to at the very least tell them. Here's my absolute favorite story about these landlords. While we were juggling college classes during quarantine and the pandemic, Liz asked us to move out a few weeks earlier than our lease end date because they wanted extra time to perform renovations. What had actually happened was Liz had made a mistake: she had promised the next group of tenants that they could move in early before asking us. We said no, and John and Liz pestered us until finally we agreed to meet in person to discuss it. When we told them we had already made plans to move out on the last day of our lease, they showed their true colors. Liz stormed out of the house and slammed the door yelling something about how "karma is a b****" and we'd "eventually find out". John took a less-explosive approach and tried convincing us that technically the dates on our lease were wrong, and that we needed to "go by what they said" and not the legal documents. When that didn't work, they tried holding the fact that they gave us $200 off our rent in the month of April over our heads. Finally, about a day later John offered us $2,000 to move out early. Although we had already made plans with moving companies, we were broke college students and we decided to agree to their terms but ask for it in writing. After being shifty about putting it in writing, not a day later John went back on his word and decided he had changed his mind: no more deal. You be the judge of what that implies. Say what you want about John and Liz, but I will say they're good at one thing: pretending they're someone they're not. For landlords that spent the whole year pretending they were the only good landlord in Oakland and reputable people of their word, they made us realize that they were just like every other slumlord in Oakland.

Three other contractors told us it would take at LEAST ten days -- if not longer -- to put down a new driveway (1800 square feet) and the only solution they provided for the wall was to remove the existing stones (1' x 2' rough blocks) and replace them with interlocking concrete stone. Joe Palmieri told us he could demolish the old driveway, tear down the wall, pour a new driveway and rebuild the wall (with proper drainage) in TWO DAYS! I didn't believe him. And you know what? He was WRONG. He completed the job in a DAY AND A HALF!!!! He brought an experienced, organized team and he personally supervised the entire job. The guys worked like a well-oiled machine. The results are breathtaking. Quality concrete, great work on the wall, and follow-through on ALL of our questions and concerns. Was he the least expensive option? Nope, but it was well worth the extra 10% we paid to have the work done in an instant and done well.

I hired Simple Fix Home Repair and Remodeling for two large projects and unfortunately had a very…read morefrustrating experience from start to finish. For the first project, they removed and rebuilt a set of egress steps at the rear of a duplex. I provided professional drawings, site plans, and had already requested the permit through the City of Pittsburgh, so expectations were clear from the start. Communication throughout the project was extremely poor. I consistently had to chase down Brad, the project manager, just to get basic updates. He would often respond saying he needed to check with Tyler (the onsite worker), but then I would have to follow up again to actually get any answers. There was no proactive communication, and workers would often show up without notice, which made managing the project unnecessarily stressful. Quality of work on the first project was also disappointing. During the final inspection, several items did not pass. One of the required fixes was to apply silicone between the new deck and the house. The result was shockingly sloppy--silicone was smeared across the wood in multiple areas instead of being neatly applied where needed. It honestly looked like it was done with no care or attention to detail. The second project involved multiple items identified on a borough inspection report, including building a deck, installing handrails with baluster guards, replacing floor jacks with mono columns, and installing a condensate pump to eliminate a PVC drain line that was a tripping hazard. Unfortunately, the same issues continued--and in some cases were worse. The scope of work was clearly defined in the inspection report, yet key items were done incorrectly. For example, the existing basement pipe handrails were removed as requested, but instead of installing code-compliant handrails with baluster guards, they installed simple wood handrails without any baluster protection. Similarly, they were instructed to replace floor jacks with permanent mono columns. Instead, they initially installed new floor jacks again. After I raised the issue, they returned to install mono columns--but even then the work was not done correctly. The posts were installed with undersized screws at the top and were not bolted to the floor at all. When I questioned this, Brad responded that drilling bolts into the concrete might cause it to "blow apart" and said I would need to sign off on any risk if they proceeded. This was not an acceptable solution. I ultimately had to hire another contractor to properly secure the posts with appropriate fasteners and anchoring. A few weeks later, another serious issue surfaced: the condensate pump had been wired incorrectly into the furnace circuit board. I had a licensed HVAC company come out, and they confirmed and documented the improper installation. In addition to the workmanship issues, there are still unfinished items. When the deck was built, piles of dirt were left in the backyard with the promise they would return to clean it up. That has still not been completed. Between the lack of communication, repeated mistakes, incomplete work, and the need to hire additional professionals to correct their errors, this was a very disappointing experience. I would not recommend Simple Fix Home Repair and Remodeling based on the quality of work and overall project management.
