I recently bought an old car from a friend, who had had it serviced here. One repair had involved replacing a stolen catalytic converter and adding a cage to prevent future theft. When I bought the car, I had to get it smogged, and the smog technician failed it because, according to him, the replacement cat wasn't approved (according to the state) for that car. When I asked them to help me resolve this, they initially were surprised, because they were sure it was a legal part number for the car, but they looked into it more and discovered it had been recalled by the manufacturer. They then replaced it with a newer part for free and helped me get it to pass the smog check. I appreciated the help and would be happy to take the car there again for future work if I were more local. read more

Did not know what was wrong with my car. I have a 2010 Jeep Wrangler which just came back from a 2 month off-road trip and could not get past 2nd gear. To top it off because I have a supercharger some shops and especially the dealership would not touch it. I was recommended to call Argonaut through Schafer off-road who is another trusted shop. so I brought it in to have them look it over and test drive it. Turned out I needed a new tranny. Elaine help find an amazing rebuilt to save money. With shipping delays it took a little while but Elaine kept me informed and updated on everything!! After a couple weeks, they finally got the tranny, quickly got it installed, and I went down to go pick it up. Upon inspecting my bike rack I noticed it got bent and quickly brought it to Elaine's attention. She investigated against the photos they take of your car when it arrives. She realized that it happened while moving the car back and forth during the time they were waiting for the tranny and immediately got online and ordered me a new one. I believe this shop deserves a great review for their ability to stand behind their service and integrity, honesty and good nature to fix what went wrong. They are a group of great humans over there and I would recommend their service to anyone who has a car. read more

This was my first visit to Argonaut Garage. I found them through Yelp. My 14 year old Mazda needs to be closely watched in it's old age. Jason and his crew did a great job with their inspection. Aside from the main problem that brought me in - a driver's side door that refused to open, several other problems were noted and remedied. The service took much longer than expected, as we awaited parts from Mazda. No problem as Argonaut paid for my use of a rental car for two days. My dad was a mechanic, I worked in a mechanics shop in my early 20s trying to (and failing) to be handy, and for years I have had a friend be able to do my repairs on the cheap. My car had a few overdue repairs that I was struggling with the crazy quotes from other garages but last week my car went from semi in need to dangerous to drive. I had come to Argonaut once before and found them quick, friendly and reasonable. So I called them and they managed to squeeze me in the exact time that was convenient for me. I had been pricing out parts and repairs online and was fearing the worst. By lunch time they had emailed an extremely thorough inspection that included pictures and video. Seeing all the things needed I felt like the repairs were going to outweigh the cost of the car. But not at all. When the estimate came through I was relieved. It was way lower then I had expected (though still plenty for an old car) and when I spoke with Dylan he was kind and concerned for the cost. Every step of this process was the best considering what was needed, down to the thank you email they sent out. It felt like the garage I worked in all those years ago who had a huge following because they were such stand up people. These guys are pretty awesome! I brought my sad old beaten up car in there with the hopes of saving it for some more years. They could've given me the quote and pushed me to have everything fixed in order for the car to survive some more time. They would've made a big chunk of money off of me. But they didn't. Instead they were very honest with me about the value of the car, everything that was wrong with it, and how much it would cost me to have it all fixed. I often experience mechanics with an underlying feeling that I have an invisible tattoo that only mechanics can see that says "screw me over I'm an auto idiot". But not with these guys! When they do an initial inspection it's very thorough. I was sent pictures of each part or section that they had comments on. They show you things that are good/need no work, things that may need work soon, and things that need to be dealt with immediately. Everything was communicated to me very clearly and I felt that the repairs we did make on the car were the least costly and the right ones. I walked out of there feeling like I was not taken advantage of or paid for things I didn't need done. I also learned a new term... I have a car they call a "hospice car". Brought my older Subaru Outback in for a headlamp replacement and steering wheel shaking while braking. I received excellent service from Elaine. She thoroughly explained the process, that they do a thorough baseline inspection (no charge) and will estimate the issues and report back any other findings. Through their text and email system I received a thorough detailed estimate and was able to select the items I wanted serviced with a report of other items I can have addressed in the future. I've never had an experience at a mechanic's shop like Argonauts, and I mean that in the best way. Their system is almost completely digitized, meaning that you can check the status of your vehicle as it's being worked on in near real time. You simply drop your car off at the garage, tell the staff what needs doing, and then you go about your day. You'll receive emails and texts showing the status of the work being done on your car - along with detailed pictures of everything they're doing, with added explanations and notes. Communication is frequent, easy and valuable as the staff asks you questions on how you'd like to proceed, their honest opinions on work that needs done, as well as prioritized listings of added services you might need. I barely know anything about cars, but the staff did a great job breaking everything down for me and explaining the issues in layman's terms. And the staff is actually - wait for it - really fricken' polite and friendly. It seems like 90% of mechanics in the world are pissed off all the time and have a chip on their shoulder about anything you ask. Not at Argonaut Garage. Jason's staff are some of the nicest and passionate folks I've met. The facilities are clean, everything at the spot is great. Never thought I'd actually enjoy going to a mechanic, but these guys do a great job and make maintenance and repair painless. read more

I had my car service here since last year, and I like the fact that staff here are very friendly and patient, although the only way to contact them is via phone as my emails were never replied. However, I'm hesitant to come again due to the following reasons: 1. The price is ~30% higher than other auto repair stores in Berkeley. I was quoted for service for almost $3k (and I bought the car for $9k) so I tried to check the price at other stores. Before tax, argonaut is asking for 100 for brake fluid flush, while two other stores in Berkley quoted for 75; for drum brake shoes, argonaut is asking for 550, while two other stores quoted for 417 and 400... I finally repaired at the other store in Berkeley and everything seems to be fine. 2. It is difficult to comment on the car maintenance quality. Last year I was here to do a regular maintenance and spend more than 400 for replacing several parts. Then within a month the engine light gets on and I have to repair it again for extra money. To sum up, if you are rich and do not care about coming here for multiple times, go for this place! I personally would have other more economic choice. read more

I know they tout themselves as the Honda gurus but steer VERY clear away from this place. Here's why. If you don't allow them to buy the parts and you come with your own parts, the labor is almost double! Also if you bring in your own parts they don't warranty their work. So, if one of their techs does something wrong, you have to pay for the job to be done all over again. Does this sound fair? Not to mention god forbid you have to do a phone consultation to confirm that you're making an informed decision to go with this company; most likely you'll get the fast talking, dismissive and rude person that I got. From start to finish he was preaching to me about how he hast to pay his taxes and pay for health insurance and all of that stuff. That is not my problem and certainly not what I called for. Trust me if a business owner stars to talk to you about how he pays his techs, 9 times out of ten, it's a about the money for them, NOT your happiness as stated on their website. If this scenario has happened to me, I am 100% certain it has happened to someone else. You have been warned there are too many places (SMALL BUSINESSES) that do the exact same work that they do and probably better. Exercise your options. There isn't a reply in the world that could change my opinion on this experience. As a small business patronizer I was insulted by how I was treated, and this was just a phone call. Others have shared their great experience with this place, this was my "not so great" experience. I'll be taking my Acura to the dealership before I go here. Jason & his team at Argonaut are awesome to work with, and incredibly trustworthy. I have a rust-bucket of a vehicle that many other mechanics literally refused to work on, but Argonaut took it without issue and have done the work to get my truck in substantially better shape. Argonaut staff is friendly, direct, and flexible. They won't push you for services you don't need, and highly-detailed records are all cloud-based so it's really simple to access detailed records [they don't do paper records and receipts unless you explicitly ask - I appreciate their efforts to be green where they can]. They regularly touch base on status of service [either automated updates through the web portal or personal emails/phone calls] and I'm never in the dark about what's going on with my vehicle and when to expect it. My first visit to Argonaut had some good points, but the results were not good enough. The front office is good: they answered the phone promptly, gave me an appointment within a week, and, when I brought my old Prius in for routine maintenance, they checked the car in efficiently. Likewise, the work was done the same day, so that part of the interaction was good. The report they produced was a long, complicated and confusing list of numerous problems, including photos, that were flagged as needing immediate or later attention. This and all communications were sent electronically. The worst part is that they suggested I change the transmission fluid, get two new tires and also new air filters, none of which were needed. The air filters are perhaps a judgement call, although at a different shop for my next maintenance visit they didn't feel the filters needed changing. I took the car to the place where I buy tires, and they told me that tires have another 5,000-10,000 miles on them. Also, I don't usually buy just two tires. The tires are rotated on a schedule, and wear evenly, so I would buy four new tires when they wear out. Finally, the new shop told me that the transmission fluid is guaranteed for the life of the car and never needs changing. So, if I had been more trusting, I might have spent another $1,000 or so getting stuff I didn't need. I'd say if you are wary and don't know of a better shop, then Argonaut might be OK, but I don't plan to go back. read more

I recently took my car into this shop due to weak brakes. The mechanics confirmed the issue & identified a few other issues. My car is 11 years old & I knew it needed work. They completed all the repairs quickly (3 day turn around) & provided a loaner car. The mechanics including pictures in the inspection report. There was an unexpected brake of a part during repair, the mechanic handled the situation with integrity & replaced the part free of charge. So far, the repairs are to my satisfaction. I have been coming to the team at Argonaut Garage for about the last 4 years to service my 2013 Prius V and feel SO grateful to have found them. Before I started coming here, I would sometimes suspect I was being overcharged or underinformed at garages, especially dealerships, simply because I'm a woman and don't know much about cars (or even what to ask sometimes). I have NEVER felt that way here. Jason educates well, encourages questions, and lays out options well. I have come to completely trust his judgment, advice, and integrity. I also REALLY appreciate his diverse staff. (side note-- not long after the pandemic started, I brought my car in bcs one of my tires kept losing air. Jason knew I needed it back in service quickly since I'm a health care provider and he told me to bring it right in-- while I walked around the block a few times, he removed whatever I had inadvertently rolled over, patched the tire, and then refused to charge me as a way of thanking me for my work as a doctor in a pandemic. My regular mechanic sent me over to Argonaut for a tricky GM recall-specific job. While I ended up having to go to the dealer after all, Jason did the legwork as GM, the dealer, and NHTSA hadn't been responding to me. He got me to the right person who knew what my issue was so the repair could be made. It turns out Jason and I have a lot of acquaintances in common, as we're both East Bay people, and it's all about supporting community, isnt it?! I ended up getting some fluid changes done while I was there. One thing that Argonaut offers that others don't is a ridiculously thorough inspection report (this coming from my being a race car inspector). It shows items in the green, yellow, and red stages so you know what some systems are good, what to look for in the future, and what should be addressed immediately. Working with Argonaut was very pleasant and friendly, I worked with Elaine who was knowledgeable and helpful in discussing what needed doing. Expect to pay for the initial inspection that confirms the customer's complaints ($285 in my case), which remains a separate line item and is not absorbed in the final fees. They also did digital diagnostic inspections at no charge. My 2017 Volt had lost its Infotainment system as well as no power to the console in the back seat. $95 to look at the console, which turned out to be merely unplugged inside. The experience overall was enjoyable though, and I would definitely consider bringing the car back next time. It was a bit pricey, which is understandable for specialized work beyond traditional engine maintenance. As a final hurrah, they happily honored the $100 off coupon that had arrived in the mail the same day I went to pick up the car, which was nice! read more

I took my truck in for a couple of issues regarding the steering, and condition of the tires, as well as a 15K service. I received the 15k service, and paid $170, which I thought was definitely worth the trip over there. However, I was troubled by the price of a couple of things that were found on the inspection report that they did. Specifically they recommended that both the upper and lower control arm bushings needed to be replaced, at a price of $2000 for the pair of them. I declined the work. I got a quote from Don's Tires, who said they would rebuild /replace BOTH control arms for $1,000 if they needed work. 1k difference in price? In addition Argonaut's offered to replace my oil pan for $1,200 which is significantly overpriced as well. I don't doubt the workmanship of their mechanics, however the price seems exorbitant compared to other shops for the services rendered. I will not be coming back for any more work here and I would not recommend them, unless you have a lot of $ to spare. read more
