They will run up an estimate of a bunch of bogus charges, which I hope they don't actually convince people to go through with. They were actually trying to charge me $45 to take leaves out of my hood and $180 to use the scanner, among other things. Their oil change was outlandishly expensive (just under $200), and their estimates for parts were much higher than they actually cost in the real world. I know rent in Berkeley is expensive, but gouging is not the way to run an honest business. Take your business elsewhere. read more

I am so happy with my experience at AUTOMETRICS. They went above and beyond after a new compressor installed by a different shop a week earlier had failed. RUN!!! DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. FIND OTHER SHOP WHO WILL CHARGE YOU MUCH LESS. ALSO THEY ASK FOR UNNECESSARY INFORMATION. I called them to inquire about regular 30 thousand miles maintenance for my 2020 Toyota Prius Prime. First - the person answered the phone could not give me an estimate without a VI number. Not sure why he needed a VIN number. All other places (Toyota dealer, local service shops that are not dealer) I called, gave me an estimate by asking year, make and model. But this is the only place insisted that I must give him a VIN number by email. When sent the VIN number to this Autometrics they came up with an estimate of $546.74 (labor + Parts + tax). They also added some kind of fee $5 versus Toyota of Concord estimate was $261.0 (labor + Parts + tax), and other local auto shops around $200 (labor + Parts + tax). I could not believe their price that is almost 3 times higher than the local auto services and more than double the Toyota dealer. I think they raised their price because they thought I am female and will not call around. I suggest, call around and get price comparison and don't go to this place who basically wants to rip-off their customers. read more

Autometrics cares about the cars (or in my case, the Toyota Tacoma truck) they work on and the people they serve. I've been bringing my Tacoma to Aflredo and Victor for a few years now, and I greatly appreciate how much time they spend looking things over, evaluating priorities and then working out the most affordable and sensible repairs. An hour after bring my truck in, they texted me a video inspection report with detailed pictures of every potential issue. Alfredo then called to go over the inspection estimate, and recommended several items that could be deferred to later. They even took care of some minor things, such as cleaning the tree sap off the windshield after replacing the wipers. Great attention to details! The service at Autometrics is stellar. Two examples: 1) I bought a new battery from them in February 2018, but it died exactly one year later. When I called up Autometrics, they gave me detailed advice on how to get my money back under the battery's warranty. Although I'd recently moved 3,000 miles away from Berkeley, they still treated me like a valued customer. And I did get the money back from the battery supplier. 2) One morning I dropped off my car for repair, and Autometrics offered to drive me to the North Berkeley BART station so I could get to work faster. No other repair shop has done that for me. I also thought Autometrics was pretty ethical when recommending repairs. They'd explain what needed repair immediately versus what might need repair in the next year, then let me decide how to proceed. In September 2016, they listed my original battery as in a "marginal state of health" and suggested replacing it "soon." I decided to keep the battery and it lasted another 1.5 years before conking out. I appreciate that they didn't try to scare me into paying for a new battery upfront. read more

I called the shop and said I need repair to my rear brakes. I stated the make and model of my car. When I arrived the owner said he could fix my brakes. I asked him for an estimate. He said he did not do written estimates. I expressed my amazement, as I have never been refused a written estimate for a auto repair.. Then he said he did not work on my kind of car. RIP OFF ARTISTS! I took my car in for an oil change that I bought through Groupon. When I went to pick up my car, they handed me an invoice with a long list of "problems" that they found and wanted to obviously fix. I told them no and took the car to my trusted mechanic who informed me that NONE of the things they stated were in need of repair or actually had any issues. NO leaks. No need for gasket replacements (which I had just had done 1 year before by my own mechanic), etc. Do NOT go there or if you do, buyer be warned. read more

Autometrics had charge of my Subaru Outback during its decline-and-hospice period, when it settled down to a 2-hiking-trips-and-into-the-shop schedule. Water pump, wobbles and shimmies, power steering, and (best of all, causing endless hilarity for Alfredo) a broken weld on the rear-left suspension. They don't have much love for rust-tinged East Coast cars --- constant source of head-shaking and apologetic remarks --- but they will work on them. At least until you put them out to pasture with KQED's car donation program. 2 points for not being surprised when I pulled a bike out of the back and headed to North Berkeley BART after dropping off my car --- many shops near Boston were freaked out by similar behavior. Alfredo (the talkative one, reminded me of a young Tony Shalhoub) and Victor (the quiet one) will get your car running --- but might chuckle their way through the talk if you've done some really entertaining damage. read more

This review really is long overdue! I've had my new car for 3 years but for 2 years before that I was routinely taking my VW GTI here for some serious work and the guys here are awesome! I had a small accident that did a lot of damage to the housing under the hood of my car. Victor was the person i talked to the most, but I kid you not my car was so unpredictable I probably called these guys every month for a 12 month period. It got to the point where Victor actually knew my voice on the phone. They put a lot of work into the car, when they saw some of my tires were balding they did the leg work to get tires from that place on Gilman and take care of it all for me in 1 stop. None the less despite their efforts some things about my car were just never going to change without me dropping some serious cash so I traded it in. They don't beat around the bush and the service rates are fair, the staff is friendly and not intimidating for those who know nothing about cars. Hopefully I won't have as many issues w my new car but if I do I know where I'll be taking it; these guys are officially my new auto body guys! read more

Loved their gropuon for a $19 oil change. Everyone was really nice. I called ahead and they took me that same day. Took less than 45 minutes and they had a couple chairs in the managers office for me to sit and read while I was waiting. No popcorn or donuts like at Jiffy Lube, but that is probably for the best. I also appreciate that they didn't try to sell me more expensive oil or services I didn't need, unlike at Jiffy Lube. Hope to see another groupon again because the full price oil change is just took expensive otherwise. read more

I relied on Autometrics to take care of my Mazda from 2005 to 2009, and I was always happy with their service. They were reliable and efficient, always friendly, and I never had any trouble with a repair they performed. They're not the cheapest place for regular maintenance and oil changes, but for diagnosis and repair I would trust my car to them anytime. read more

Awesome place that will help you. My 88 Mazda RX-7 is an old car, I got a bunch of problems sorted out here at Autometrics. Oil Cooler lines, Oil Pan Gasket, AC Belt, New Radiator, New Thermostat, New Engine mounts, New Transmission mounts, Rear end replace, complete replacement of all the rotten suspension bushings and new coilovers. After the work, my car drives better than new. Some other shops I called won't even take in my car, saying that it is too much of a hassle to work on. Victor will try to help you out whatever your needs are, even when it is replacing old rubber bushings on your car. Highly recommended! read more

Feeling pretty bummed about these guys today. Really poor communication. I don't know why they wouldn't call me. I had to call them the entire time my car was in for service. They only contacted me once. The first day I heard nothing. The second day I called and got a quote. They had to order parts, it took over the weekend. They told me it'd be done monday evening and I could pick it up tuesday morning. I got there and it was in the rack. They finally called me around noon. Pretty frustrating. I only have one car and my family depends on it. We had a very hard time rearranging our lives without the car. It would have been easier if we had known it would take six days. I've brought my car here before and it's always been same day turn around. They just didn't tell me anything. Felt like I kept getting the cold shoulder. I won't be back and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone else. I left feeling pretty shitty about paying them thousands of dollars for repairs over the years. read more

We are so disappointed and upset. Having trusted and felt so good about Alfredo and Victor, and taking 4 of our cars to them, the past two times they have performed services not requested, and not called for authorization. The first time we thought it might have been a glitch... but this time we let them know we were possibly not even going to keep the car, that we might donate it. I took my Audi to Autometrics last week and they did a great job diagnosing and fixing an engine light problem for a total of $61. It turned out that there was a problem with my evap system, which the mechanic probably could have charged me hundreds to replace - instead, he helped me buy a new factory gas cap for $11. Like L.S. said, I went to Autometrics for an oil change. When I picked up my car an hour or so later, they gave me a list of repairs they said needed doing--to the tune of $1,200. Skeptical, I emailed a mechanic friend (who doesn't live in town, otherwise I'd take the car to him) who said a lot of it sounded fishy. He did suggest we look into the water pump, though, which Autometrics said needed replacing (for $500 of those $1,200). Today I brought the car to another mechanic, who could not find a water pump leak for love nor money. Stay away! read more

This place is the best. I had been trying to get my broken A/C system fixed but kept coming upon dead-ends. I found this place from Yelp reviews and called and scheduled a time to bring my car in. I was able to drop it off and then go out of town for a week and they communicated with me via email - it was so easy. My 2009 Honda Fit ended up needing a new blower motor, speed resistor and blower filter; they said they had never seen a car make such a weird loud thwacking noise before! They even waived the diagnostics fee. I would highly recommend this place because of the ease and accuracy of their work. They got it done right, the first time and I so appreciate it. read more

Took a vehicle I was thinking about buying here for a pre-purchase inspection. I wanted to be really careful because it had a salvage title. The collision seemed minor and the worked looked good, and drove deceptively well. Paid $120 to learn that the car I was about to shell out 5K for needed 2.5 K in maintenance and repairs on top of an severely bent frame. None of which the seller had disclosed to me (he was surprised to learn about them himself). The bad news is that this car was not the bargain dream car that my inexperienced eye had assessed it to be. THe good news is I have a new trusted mechanic in Berkeley. Joe was great. The vehicle didn't have plates and so when he took it out for a test drive, he got stopped by cops twice. It delayed the inspection and my appointment window had run out by the time he finished test driving it, but he found a spot up on the rack as quickly as he could and recommended a really nice cafe down the street while he finished up the inspection. When I came back he sat down and went bullet point by bullet point and answered all my questions. When I asked if I should haggle down or just not touch the vehicle, he told me to just look for another car. He asked what I was looking for in a car, and he told me he would keep an eye out for anything that came through their used lot. Gave me some advice on my future car search. I was so thankful he let me know what I was getting myself into before it was too late. I saved myself thousands of dollars and headaches. I'd buy him a beer if I could. Great service. read more

They are the real deal. OK so I was in a bit of a crunch it was right before the 4th of July 3 day weekend and my headlamp was out. I was headed on a road trip later that evening so a replacement Thursday was crucial. I called around and visited 3 other places on San Pablo that either were "too busy" or "on lunch" so I ended up calling this place. Victor was so helpful. He said come on by. These guys offer fair prices for trade ins (they offered me much more than DGDG) and price their vehicles fairly (mine was equal to KBB whereas other dealers charged thousands more). On top of that, they're friendly, communicative, and they give a warranty for every vehicle. They make the process of buying/trading fast and easy (they take care of DMV paperwork for you). Also, they still treated me like an important customer after the sale was done. It felt like they had my back.
