People have recommended Pica Pica to me for years and I never had the chance to go ... until a few…read moredays ago. For some reason, I thought this was a regular restaurant with table service, and a much larger space, but it's a somewhat narrow space and you order at the counter. I decided to try their trio sampler plate so I could get an idea of how a few of their meats were prepared and they each were in their own mini-arepa, so I thought that would be a good introduction. Unfortunately, I didn't like the arepas as much as I thought I would. I found them to be a little dry and lacking that rich corn masa flavor I was expecting. I don't know if this has to do solely with Pica Pica or if it's simply how arepas are made in general, but I came away feeling like I preferred other foods with a corn base such as tamales and pupusas. Meat-wise I had the fried chicken, the shredded beef and the asado negro. The fried chicken, to me, was not very exciting. The shredded beef was good, tasty, but the asado negro was the absolute star of it all? As far as I'm concerned, it's a most delicious cut of brisket with a sweet tomato sauce. I wish I had ordered more. The platanos or fried plantains were not like maduros that are very sweet. They're a little dry and flavorless, and the side order that I got of them for $7.50, they sure don't give you all that many. so that was a bummer for me. I also tried two flavors of what essentially are aguas frescas, the passion fruit and the mango. The passion fruit was out of this world! The mango, don't bother. It tasted like water with a powdered mix. I will definitely be back -- unfortunately, not for the arepas, but for the asado negro, either as a plate with rice & beans or in a salad.

I liked the cachapas with pulled pork so much more than the arepa with shredded beef. The pulled pork portion was huge and very juicey and delicious! The combination of sweet corn and savory pork was incredible. It's a bit weird though there are was half an uncut avocado just sitting inside the sweet corn crepe. The salad that came was also fresh, and I enjoyed the all the sauces that came with it. The white arepa we had was dry and uninteresting. I liked the plantains and the beef fillings too but the cachapas just couldn't beat. When we asked for to-go they put it in a brown bag. They didn't include any utensils so I suggest getting them if you want to eat somewhere else.

I love empanadas. They're flaky, savory, and usually delicious. I often can't pass an empanada…read morestand. But I was super disappointed with Crazy Empanada at the San Ramon Farmer's Market. I tried a beef empanada which came with three sauces: a salsa, a creamy (almost tartar-like) one, and a green onion oil one. The empanada itself was super oily and greasy- all I tasted was oil and no amount of sauce helped. And it wasn't flaky at all. Not my cup of tea.

The salad was ok as well, but I didn't like all of the cheese on top and the dressing was freshly made. I like melted cheese and for it to be melted, it needs to be hot. I could have had a little less on my salad because I was eating it for the veggies. I got an arepa - the pork belly one and it was okay as well. The beans were a touch cold, not an issue, and the avocado was fresh and tasted good. I don't like tomatoes, but the slices were thick and juicy. My husband enjoyed them. My thing is that there was no "WOW" factor with this meal. It was good and did its job (filled me up0, and I was safe (didn't get sick), but it's not the kind of place that I'd make a special trip to see. The place was fine, the people working there were nice, but I don't know if a return visit is warranted.

This review is for their food truck at Pleasant Hill BART…read more I stopped by on my lunch break earlier this week but wasn't sure what to order. They recommended the pork belly arepa ($17) but I am no longer enjoying the fatty and crisp textures of pork belly, so I asked the lady who'd confidently ordered just before me for her recommendation. "Get the cheese cachapa, it's delicious and filling," she said. So I did, but I got one with shredded beef instead of cheese-only ($15). My cachapa - a Venezuelan sweet corn pancake filled with melted cheese - took about 10 mins to prepare, and it was thick and huuuuge! I changed my mind about eating it al fresco at one of the tables near the food truck, and took it back to the office instead. Back at the office, I ate the cachapa slowly, with the plastic fork and knife they'd thoughtfully provided. There wasn't much beef in it, and it was crisp, sweet and verrrrry filling. I made myself some coffee to sidestep the food coma that was sure to follow, and got back to work! Will return to try other items when they're back.
