My wife and I went to Rinconcito Chapin for breakfast, and it was a great way to reminisce about our honeymoon in Guatemala. We got hooked on traditional Guatemalan breakfasts back then, so we both ordered it here, and it really took us back. The plate came with eggs (I had mine scrambled with vegetables), black beans with totopos, a slice of cheese, sausage, sweet fried plantains, and thick tortillas just like the ones we had in Guatemala--not the thin Mexican-style tortillas most people are used to. Everything was delicious, but the highlight for me was the hot chocolate, which was rich and had a nice cinnamon flavor. The staff was super friendly. It appears to be Spanish speaking only, but don't let that deter you. The menu has English translations and pictures. They also serve Salvadoran and Guatemalan dishes and a big selection of pupusas. One small thing--the place could use a deep clean, especially the salt shakers and hot sauce bottles. Also, the Yelp business info says they don't take credit cards, but they do, so no need to bring cash. Overall, great food and friendly service. read more

Well this place had smooth pupusas, flour and corn I've never had but liked. Second they have sodas from Central America in a wide variety, other places just sell cola champagne. I attacked the pupusas like I've never eaten em. One thing I found funny and May annoy others is the music, they have a cd stereo and all the end of the cd it kept repeating the same thing. I really enjoyed my meal here. The service was prompt. The food was fresh so were the tortillas. The only reason I would give it a 4 star is because the food was pretty expensive at least for me. The restaurant was not upscale and the food was enjoyable but I dont think worth $38 for 2 plates and tap water. We had the Ilacha and Carne Guisada. :( basically $19 each plate. I dont make Oakland money the minimum wage where I am from it's still $11. If I pay that much($19 or more) it be for some expensive but good piece of steak or Seafood in a nice restaurant. read more

This is a delicious hole in the wall. It's Guatemalan and Salvadoran food and the menu tells you which country the meals come from. I ordered a Caldo de Res and it was delicious! The tortillas were amazing and they were generous with the meat. I also ordered plantains and they were very greasy but so good! Their atol de elote was also bomb! Highly recommend! read more

One of my favorite local Central American restaurants. Every meal I've had tastes very home made. Staff is super friendly. Place is clean and bathroom have been properly maintained. Every plate provided has been fully served, even the chips and black beans provided as a house appetizer are finger licking good. This place deserves to be closed down. The food tastes old and is made in such a lazy manner that some of the food is even falling apart. It is nowhere near an authentic Guatemalan restaurant at all. Lastly, the service is horrible but that's understandable since the workers are so lazy they can't make the food right or fresh. Hopefully they shut down soon. read more

Lived in Guatemala for some time, many years ago, so occasionally I'll look up a Guatemalteco restaurant that may be able to serve me up some memories. However, this time, I wanted to perhaps try some Chapin dishes I'd never had before. Perusing the menu, I saw they served Pacaya! I was never brave enough to try it when I was younger, so I gave it a shot. It's a bitter vegetable with octopus like tentacles, covered with a really good red sauce with just a bit of queso shaved on top. Served with rice and liquified black beans, it was something different and quite satisfying. Also, they provided a short stack of handmade corn tortillas, and they were just as I remembered them from Guatemala. Rellenitos were my favorite thing, ever. So I ordered a couple as a dessert. They came back to me a minute or two after ordering, "Do you want it with beans or milk...leche." I was confused, I'd never had them filled with 'leche', so I said why not. Oh man, glad I got to try these. It wasn't just straight up milk, it was essentially a plantain rellenito filled with rice pudding! So good. This was a late lunch/early dinner visit. I'll be back for breakfast soon, for sure. The ambiance? Forget about it, doesn't matter. There's nothing impressive or special about it. Don't plan to spend a special evening here. read more

Our first time here, not the greatest service or quality of food. We ordered Atol de elote to drink they brought it to us warm to cold when it should be served hot. My wife and I both had the Guatemalen breakfast which has over medium eggs with black beans and fried plantines. The eggs were plain but no problem just added some hot sauce and it was all good, there beans had no flavor and the plantines you can tell where not fresh they where re-heated. We also ordered a tamala and just was not good at all flavorless. They also got our order wrong the girl forgot to bring us a bread with black beans we ordered for our son. Sorry, we do not recommend we know our countries food and flavors and this place FAILED! Oh and almost forgot the customer service was terrible they never came to check on us and see if we were okay. Walked into this place on a Sunday afternoon, the older Guatemalan gentleman waiting tables was friendly and handed me a menu handwritten in Magic Marker. I asked from one tamale which was not listed on the menu but advertised with a sign on the door. The tamale was moist and delicious wrapped in a banana leaf and had some surprising ingredients like a green olive and what I think was loroco. The TV behind the counter was playing Spiderman in Spanish. For $2.50, the tamale was a great deal but I would also love to return and try the lunch plates which most of the other patrons were enjoying. read more

I love the chicken soup here, they serve you a grilled chicken breast on the side of your big bowl of soup that includes vegetables. I like to chill here in the early afternoon I enjoy my food peacefully , this spot has very friendly waiters and is clean. I tried the pupusas and they are also very good not greasy. Just right! They also give black bean dip with your tostadas. International blvd has crapy parking that's why I have 4 stars. read more

I've learned that the secret ingredient to most Latino food that I've tasted is CHEESE and SALSA, lots and lots of artery clogging cheese and so much salsa it drowns out every other flavor. (Of course I'm exaggerating, please don't bash this stereo type as it is a joke...mostly.) This place is different, they don't rely on cheese and salsa alone, every piece of the meal adds to the over all experience of dinning. I would never come back here!,. Back in Guatemala we drink our ATOL HOT, but this place seems to have forgotten its roots. It was given to me half filled and COLD?, bought it for a Mexican friend of mine and was super embarrassed when she told me it was cold and the cup was half filled!!!.I guess I have to accept the fact that there is no real Guatemalan restaurant in the bay area. If you want real Guatemalan food buy a ticket and go to Guatemala. read more
