This place is seriously one of the best BBQ spots I've EVER been to. The meat was incredibly tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly, every bite just melted in your mouth. The ribs were a standout, and the sides were just as impressive (don't skip the pulled pork grilled cheese!). The staff were friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. Echoing a Yelper's recently posted review, I have to agree. Arctic Smokehouse BBQ is THE best BBQ I have had since moving to Anchorage from North Carolina back in 2014. There has been a need for a good BBQ restaurant in Anchorage for many years and now we finally have one. Arctic Smokehouse BBQ is located off of Boniface and the Glenn Highway down the road from the entrance to Elmendorf Air Force Base at a strip mall in the former That Wing Place. The employees I met were super friendly and helpful. The interior of the dining room is essentially the same from previous ownership albeit a few more tables added and all the booths removed. The salad bar is still in place and TVs playing sports adorn the walls everywhere. I went up to the counter to place an order. I decided to go with the 1-lb Brisket Plate with Collard Greens and Todd's Cowboy Beans with Brisket for the sides. The wait was relatively short as the brisket was readily available and the sides were served from a cafeteria-style set up. Honestly, I have not had brisket this tender and flavorful since going to the Q-Shack restaurant in Raleigh, NC. This was one of the best BBQ meals I have had in recent memory. The takeout menu details smoking all of their meats over a Texas hardwood called Post Oak. The Poultry, Pork Ribs, and Sausages are smoked over two types of wood: Post Oak and Hickory. I love how they include the burnt ends with a little bit of fat. Other BBQ restaurants past and present here in town usually discard that which is a disappointment since that is where all of the flavor comes from. The sides were also delicious. Todd's Cowboy Beans with Brisket can be a meal in itself if served in a large bowl, but the sliced meats are the shining stars on the menu. There is also a large selection of BBQ sauces at a separate stand by the salad bar. The options are impressive from Texas Red Raspberry or Blackberry to Smoky to Alabama White to homemade sauces like Bill's BBQ. A large bottle selection of hot sauces are available to the right of the BBQ sauces on a separate stand. There are plenty of items in the menu I will be trying in future visits. This includes the Pork Belly Grilled Cheese Sandwich, the BBQ Bacon Ranch Chicken Wings, the Sliced Alaska Reindeer Sausage Sandwich, the Stuffed Twice Baked Potatoes with Pulled Pork, and the Banana Pudding. Prices are relatively higher for some dishes including the brisket but it is well worth it especially when the brisket is USDA Prime grade. Family packages for large groups and catering for office parties or other events are also available. I forgot to ask whether the NFL Sunday Ticket was available for Sunday games with the amount of TVs they have. If so, this will be a regular spot for football on the weekends, but my only place for BBQ here in Anchorage. read more

My 4 stars is mainly because the staff are excellent, and it's a nice clean, uncluttered dining room. We went here because husband expressed a desire, he likes BBQ and smoked meats, for myself, I'm not a fan, and I only went because I thought I could cobble together a plate of sides and be satisfied. He got the brisket plate, ($32) which had brisket, 2 sides and a cornbread muffin. He was asked if he preferred meaty or fatty, he said a mix. I opted for salad and fries. Now for the salad - the side salad (9.95) is a small plate but you can go back multiple times for a refill. The large plate (16.95) is a one time deal. It would make sense to go for the side salad, but husband made me get the one time large plate. I like to dump my fries on my salad. You should try it, it tastes good. The young lady behind the counter was lovely, very chatty and bubbly. So he gets his brisket platter, which to my eye, looked pretty small for $32, he chose Mac n cheese and potato salad for his sides, and the Mac n cheese was a decent sized portion, but the potato salad was in a small plastic cup, a little larger than the ones you'd get a serving of sauce in. They have a shelf with lots of hot sauce bottles, and a little side bar where you get sour cream, jalapeños, pickled onions etc. while we were hovering around selecting items, the young lady told me she'd given me a cornbread muffin, (free) as they were so good! As i make cornbread muffins myself (bacon, cheese and Jalapeno, and they are perfection) I thought it a somewhat lofty claim, but we'll see. If I'm honest, I was somewhat disappointed with the salad bar - I like spinach, I always get that for a salad, but there was lettuce or spring mix, and whenever I have lettuce from a restaurant I get indigestion from it. This only happens with restaurant lettuce (my home grown lettuce doesn't cause this phenomenon) hence why i always opt for spinach. There were no cold meats at all. Some shredded cheeses, black and green grapes, watermelon, beetroot, an olive mix, celery, grape, tomatoes, shredded carrot. Maybe my expectations were high, but we do have a couple of good salad bars in town. Anyway, I smile and select what I will eat. They had ranch, so I got ranch, but no honey mustard, which I wanted. So I had my salad, and he had his brisket plate, but no fries yet. Husband went to the counter to enquire, and was told, we air fry them, we don't use deep fat fryers. So I had to wait a bit for those, and was eating my salad really slowly, because the point of the fries is to scatter them on the salad. Anyway, they eventually arrived, nice and crispy, very shoestring fries, those were good, and a perfect pairing with the salad. The cornbread muffins were fresh and hot, and I ate half, but they were crumbly, and I couldn't really get a solid bite, as they were falling apart. The taste was good though, they had a honey glaze I think. He professed that his brisket wasn't the best he had tasted, but that the Mac n Cheese was good and cheesy, but that the price was a little high for the amount of food he got. Easily the best barbecue I've had in Alaska, and, frankly, better than many respected spots Outside. This is the barbecue Anchorage has been waiting for. I brought along a couple of self-proclaimed BBQ aficionados from work, both wary after too many local disappointments. Their skepticism didn't last long. They just opened so some hiccups are expected, however I was impressed with our first visit! I wasn't completely sure how the ordering worked and after I told them it was my first time there, they didn't really explain it to me either. So, I started ordering my meal including sides and was told sides are ordered at the next station. No problem. We got the 1/2 smoked chicken and sliced brisket with brisket baked beans and peach cobbler. The employee said the mac & cheese was amazing, so I got that as well. All platters also come with a jalapeño corn bread muffin. They also had a bunch of bbq sauces to choose from. The brisket and chicken were both great. I loved the beans and corn bread too. The peach cobbler tasted a little underbaked to me. I wish it had been crispier on top. The mac & cheese was very creamy but it was extremely salty, and I love salt. A tad less salt and it would have been perfect for me. My husband can't have any of the sides but they will be opening a salad bar, which will be great for him. They are new and seem to run out of some meats quickly but I think that's to be expected at first. They are also spendy but the quality is there and I'd prefer spending extra for great bbq rather than not having any at all! The tables were cleaned quickly and the staff was very friendly. I've struggled to find good BBQ here in Anchorage.... My partner wanted to try this place and the menu looked great. Prices seemed high, but if it's good I'm willing to pay. They don't do online ordering (but it's an option in their site, it just tells you it's not available) They also didn't do calls for takeout when we ordered. They were out of the smoked turkey , so we both got brisket. Ehhhhh the brisket wasn't great. More than 50% fat on each piece and not tender at all. I know brisket can be fatty, but for the price point I was disappointed. Not much meat for yourself once the fat is removed. Flavor was decent. I liked the Mac n cheese - it has a little kick to it! The cornbread jalapeño muffin was OK. They were out of the peach cobbler as well. They did forget our okra too and by time we were across town and home to eat our food they were already closed for the day (3pm) - I did see their site update the hours to 8pm now so maybe they hired more staff. They did say they would give us our missed okra on our next order. I do think the food all being in separate containers was overkill (so much plastic)...if I'm ordering a plate style it's okay to do one takeout container withy meat and sides in it. The brisket was tender and Smokey, not mush like it sat in a crockpot all day. The baked beans had all the right flavors. The slaw was different than any other slaw I've had, almost like it had some thousand island dressing in it. The chicken wings were crispy and the mild, medium, and hot sauces have a butter base that was delicious. The cook was super kind, came to ask how the meal was and showed us how to order for catering. I liked that they had a wash sink in the dining area but the radio station they used was too loud and not family friendly. They did turn it down some when we mentioned it. read more

THE BEST brisket in the city hands down. I've lived in Anchorage for 16 years after moving up from the south and always complained that there's no good barbecue in town. No where else can compete with the tender, beautifully flavored brisket or the phenomenal service. Very good, I was a little skeptical when I first heard about them. It took me a couple times to get to them before they sold out and I thought that was a good sign. I was happily surprised when I finally got some food there, it was very good. The staff were great and I really enjoyed the BBQ. Growing up in Waco I consider myself a BBQ snob, most places just don't measure up. Arctic Smokehouse is traditional Texas style with a dry rub and sauce on the side. Finally good BBQ in Anchorage! Ordered the brisket platter with slaw, cowboy brisket beans, and the cornbread muffin. Brisket was very good, not perfect, but very good. The Cowboy baked beans with brisket were FANTASTIC! I would go back just for those beans. The slaw was unique, seemed to have a thousand island dressing thing going on. The cornbread muffin was good, but nothing special. The platter was a tad spendy for only 6 oz of brisket, but the beans were at least a generous portion for a side. I imagine their meat bill isn't cheap, so you get what you pay for. Service was phenomenal. One guy came and checked on us, I said the music was a little loud and he actually turned it down. The ambiance isn't as good as the food, I'd prefer to take out than eat there. Lots of TVs, unnecessary. The worst part was the music. Not sure why I was listening to Lil Wayne while eating bbq. The place its self is plain not much going on and not much of a theme. The service was ok, I had the person cutting the meet say that he would try to slice it after he asked "chopped" or "sliced" as well as Maybe some miscommunication among the staff. The brisket is great definitely nothing to complain about I also had the wings and asked for spicy habanero lemon pepper. They lacked in the flavor that I asked for them in but the wings themself are great tasting if there was no sauce on them good sized crispy wings. I had very high hopes for Arctic smokehouse but I was unfortunately pretty disappointed. Customer service was great the staff is very friendly but the food we got tasted old and flavorless. The ribs were dry and had the consistency of beef jerky, the brisket was really lacking in flavor and was not tender like it thought it would be. Everything lacked the smokey flavor we were expecting considering SMOKEHOUSE is in the name. The Bbq sauce options are decent but maybe we just came on a bad night for the meat, but its very unlikely that I will be returning. read more
