The staff is lively and friendly - no surprise - and service is FAST. My espresso was prepped & handed to me before I even clicked on the "Tip Amount" on the card reader -- if on purpose, brilliant, if not, certainly made it an easy decision to tip generously. The baked goods perched in window at the front counter - between croissants, banana bread, tarts, cheesecakes,... - are beautifully crafted and tempt even the LEAST sweet tooth's of us. They have an EXTENSIVE list of crepes (both savory and sweet options) and sandwiches, so if you come for a grind session, you have plenty of (seemingly tasty) food options to choose from. Prices...$2.75 for a double espresso is a deal, especially at a well-staffed / newly(?) renovated / luxury coffee establishment such as this. They really could raise their price two-fold and I'd still be happy (at least coming from Californian like myself). My espresso was served hot but not burned, with low acid beans which contained an obvious LACK of mycotoxins & mold (at least based on my amateur judgement; I am a good judge, though, as I am extremely sensitive with coffee beans). So with that said, if you are sensitive and need high quality coffee beans, do what I do and make Bernklau your morning coffee spot if you are staying or live in the area. A+ all around. Kudos to the owner/manager and kudos to the staff.

It's roughly walking distance from the beach (maybe a brisk quarter mile or so from the sand), and is THE best kept secret in downtown Sandpoint. This place defines "hole in the wall" restaurant, and even if you're on foot, if you blink at the wrong moment, you'd likely miss it. Don't do that. This place is excellent. I've never been to Philadelphia, so I can't say with any accuracy or certainty how Joe's sandwiches hold up to the real deals, but I will say that the sandwiches and their burgers are indeed the Real Deal. Their sandwiches come in 8" and 12" lengths and burgers from 1-2 quarter pound patties. They have a fairly standard soda fountain equipped with Pepsi product, a few bottled beverages, and a mindblowing milk shake menu. A few years ago they even offered a buffalo sauce flavored milk shake. Full stop. Anyway, I can attest that their huckleberry shake and Hershey's chocolate malt are out of this world awesome. My wife and I went here for date night last night, our first time in in quite some time. Service was very friendly and attentive, and everything was made to order. Whereas I've usually gone for the Philly cheese steak or French dip, this time I did the bacon burger with pepper jack (they have a good variety of cheese available, I should add) and left with zero regrets. My wife did the standard cheeseburger with everything and we split a side of onion rings which were ambrosial (delicious, amazing, what have you). Parking can be a little iffy, but there are some spots on the street right out front. Worst case scenario, they're a very short walking distance from the big (free) public parking lot on Church street, which is where I parked. You might even need the walk if you're eating there. Inside seating is limited, but clean and comfortable. The AC wasn't the greatest, and I can't imagine the heat from the kitchen does the interior temps any favors. My wife and I rarely if ever get a date night anymore, so the whole thing was a great treat, and something I'd gladly do again anytime. Highly, highly recommended.

It has since become a semi regular place for us when we're looking for breakfast or lunch of the sort that ends up being just about the only meal we'll eat that day. I can't recommend it from experience, but Green Eggs & Ham is what really put Hoot Owl on the map. But for my money, it doesn't get much better than their Ranch Burger. Breakfast or lunch, that's my go to along with an endless cup of coffee and tall glass of ice water. Whoever decided to mix ranch dressing and barbecue sauce deserves and Nobel effing Peace Prize. My wife has tried a number of their omelette and scramble offerings and never been disappointed. And then there's the cinnamon rolls. Brace yourself because it's literally the size of your face. Dripping in frosting and served with roughly half a cube of whipped butter, the cinnamon roll is an event unto itself, and definitely a prime item for sharing with the table. The atmosphere is very cozy and...Rural. It feels like something out of a period film; very down to earth and eclectic with lots of owl knickknacks all over the place. If you've a bad back or bad posture, I'd recommend a table over a booth as the booths are a little short in the seat and very straight backed. Parking is usually not bad, even when they're busy (which is often), but it's in a dirt lot that shares its real estate with a drive through coffee shack. Lots of potholes at the entrance, so depending upon your vehicle, get ready to slalom a bit. The restaurant offers free WiFi to guests and is relatively kid friendly with plenty of high chairs, decks of cards at the table, etc. Service has always been friendly and expedient. They recently started tacking on a 3% surcharge for card transactions, but if you pay cash you get a discount...Of 3%. Heh. Anyway, if you're in the area and you want a big meal at a decent price, this place is fantastic. Forgot to mention prices, but a half pound specialty burger with fries ranges $13-$16, and similar pricing on other entree menu items. Get you some.
